UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate

There is no reason to think Porter Moser would have significantly better talent at UT than OU. OU objectively has a better basketball history than we do and has plenty of money to get recruits. If he doesn’t have top end talent, it is his own fault.

I got my eye on this dude. Tech tried to hire him as an assistant two years ago under McCasland and he is now at Drake. Won 4 national titles at the D2 level and has Drake 6-0 to start this season with wins over Miami, FAU and Vandy.

He is the coach that I wanted for the WSU job when they stupidly gave it to the interim guy and set the program back 5 years. My best friend played for NWMS in the 90's and has remained close to their teams and staffs since graduating. He has nothing but praise for McCollum. I don't imagine it would take much to convince him to leave Drake when the time comes. That is, if the Drake job doesn't kill him first.

Porter Moser with talent would be scary good.  Would hate to lose him to UT and I’m sure you all want a big name but the dude can coach.

Nice try, sooner. Why would we hire that block-headed dildo to replace a coach that is 4-0 in h2h matchups the last two seasons?

I mean I’m a huge fan of your HC, I’ll just leave it at that.  Thankfully Beard is a POS or there was gonna be a serious run but we are all safe, for now, with Terruh…

Two separate issues. Most of us realize we will need to replace Terry, but I think we want to actually get a better coach in the process.

McCollum looks like the truth. Drake beat Kansas State tonight and moved to 10-0 in McCollum's 1st year.

.813 winning percentage at the D2 level with multiple national championships and now 10-0 at the D1 level. This guy just wins it looks like. He's also really young.

McCollum now has wins over Vandy, Miami, and K-State this year with a roster he primarily recruited out of the portal from his D2 team.

He's beating power conference teams with a D2 roster. He won't be at Drake longer than a year. It's already pretty obvious he's a good coach.

It’s so wonderful to wake up this morning and realize that Texas’ three previous coaches are all ranked, including number 1, and Texas isn’t. And they’ve lost to unranked teams.  Sigh.

But hey, we can scream “we’re Texas!” and those schools can’t.

In his last 8 years at NW Missouri St he was 253-21 (0.923) with four National Titles (and would have been a 5th if Covid didn't cancel 2020).  Is that good?  Seems good.

Wonder if that has ever happened before. Three coaches ditched by the same school (yeah Shaka wasn't technically fired) all ranked at the same time.

I don't understand why we moved on from all those coaches who were underachieving or getting arrested here.

Yeah, awesome for them doing well at their new schools, but just a reminder

Rick Barnes failed to advance to the 2nd weekend for 7 straight seasons after the 2008 Elite 8 and only had two top 3 regular season finishes in the Big 12 in those 7 years.  And missed the NCAAT one of those years
Shaka Smart failed to win a single NCAA tournament game in his 6 seasons, missing the tournament twice (and maybe a third time if COVID didn't cancel the tournament) with two top-3 regular season finishes in the Big 12
Chris Beard couldn't keep his hands to himself one fateful night and was entirely unremorseful and defiant and forced CDC's hand

The Shaka thing is the only one that is weird to me.  He had success before here and after here, but was pretty terrible here.  Although a lot of that was losing in the tournament, which can be a bit random.

Rick Barnes - It's really hard to maintain a really high level of success over a long period of time, and I think Barnes at Texas had gotten a bit stale.  Plus, there were some bad losses in the tournament that likely doomed him.  He also has not exactly been tearing it up in the tournament except for last year:

Beard - I mean, I'm pretty sure that one did not have much to do with the Texas job.  He was likely going to have success here, but after the arrest and the statements by his attorney, Texas did not have much of a choice but to fire him.

In the last 17 years, Rick Barnes and Rodney Terry have been to exactly the same number of Elite Eights.  In the last 5 seasons, Chris Beard has won a grand total of TWO tournament games.  Shaka Smart has made it past the first round in the tournament exactly one time in the last 14 years.

Yes, these coaches are ranked highly right now, but lets see the season play out before we cry too hard.

I always felt like Shaka was close to turning the corner at Texas, but he just never could do it. Every year it seemed like we had 4-6 VERY close losses that could have changed the whole season with a win.

2016 should have been a good year.  Isaiah Taylor, Jevan Felix, Roach, Ridley, Ibeh, etc.  Lost a few close ones that could have moved us up to a 4-5 seed. Instead we are a 6 seed and lost to Northern Iowa.  Fail.

2017 was a shit show. Finished the regular season losing 7 in a row and 14 of the last 17.  Fail.

2019 had wins over #7 UNC, #9 Purdue, #15 ISU, #17 KU. And then put it together to win the NIT. (Big whoop). They also had TEN losses by 6 points or less. Just win half of those and we would have been a medium NCAA seed.  Fail.

The 2021 team was really good.  We were 19-8, but again 6 of those losses were by a combined 11 points. That team was full of NBA talent in Sims, Kai Jones, Greg Brown. We had a great senior PG in Matt Coleman. And Jones / Ramey were solid.  That team should have been a S16 or E8 team.  Nope. Stepped on our dick vs. shitty ACU.  Fail.

Yeah, this is pretty much it. Barnes and Shaka were fired because they couldn’t win when it mattered. Still been the same issue.

My dad's birthday was yesterday. He was telling me about how his granddad died on his birthday when he was 7.

I was like... cool story.  Texas basketball died on my birthday, December 12 two years ago.
