UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate

Shaka had relative success at Texas if you omit the NCAA tournament results. Under Shaka, Texas won a Big12 championship, NIT championship, and a pretty big in-season tournament or two. If he had won a couple of NCAA tournament games, I think his tenure would have lasted longer, but that big ZERO under NCAA tournament wins was baffling and unforgivable. I get that NCAA games are a crapshoot and sometimes require luck to make a run, but the dude was snakebit and cursed at Texas when it came to NCAA tournament games so both sides had to move on.

In the last 17 years, Rick Barnes and Rodney Terry have been to exactly the same number of Elite Eights.  In the last 5 seasons, Chris Beard has won a grand total of TWO tournament games.  Shaka Smart has made it past the first round in the tournament exactly one time in the last 14 years.

Yes, these coaches are ranked highly right now, but lets see the season play out before we cry too hard.

I get your point and it’s fair. But, Rodney Terry is not a good coach.

It's unfortunate, but tourney wins are what define you in college sports like basketball. Same for baseball.

Nobody remembers Augie as a great regular season coach. He's remembered as a coach that had his teams peaking at the right time and won when it mattered.

Even football. When Mack was getting his shit pushed in by Stoops, how many times did we hear about consecutive 9 win seasons and bowl eligibility.  Of course post season matters, unless it’s Rodney having success in a fractured year

That’s not fair to throw Beard in there.  Who knows how many NIT games he would’ve won if they didn’t decline the invite?

in fact i kinda hate how much the average fan cares about tourney results. a fan base that has a totally underwhelming regular season but then makes the S16 as a 9 seed is happier than a fan base of a 27-5 team that got a 2 seed and made the S16. i really don’t like that dynamic. the tourney is a crapshoot, a lottery ticket. i find that i value regular season consistency far more than the average fan does.

Give me the 2-seed in that scenario.  I don't consider making the S16 underachieving unless it the the pinnacle of one's coaching career, and only happens once, or very infrequently for coaches that stick around for a decade or more.  Underachieving isn't a 2-seed losing to a 3-seed in any given year.  It's routinely losing in the first or second round to teams seeded way below yours, failing to make the tournament with stacked talent, and having your teams get noticeably worse during every season's progression.

Bill Self and every other great coach have had some real stinker tournament performances, but they get to balance that with success.  In Self's case,  2 championships, 3 final fours, and 7 elite eight appearances buys a lot of patience from a fanbase that expects the best.

THAT's his point.  Our "not good" coach has already achieved as much as the coaches that people are wishing we still had here.

Exactly. Everybody knows RT is mediocre at best. We can do better than him or Barnes or Shaka.

Not sure we can do better than Beard. Holy hell he was the perfect fit here. But he is clearly unstable, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the wheels come off again.

I give RT full credit for the E8. That could have easily been a 12 win team following Beard’s departure, especially playing in the brutal Big 12. The team got better and better as the year went on. He knew how to manage the players and restore their focus. A+ job.

Last year was “ok”. He built a decent roster despite losing two NBA caliber freshmen at the last minute. And he won more tournament games than Shaka did his entire tenure here.

Regardless, OK isn’t close to good enough with our resources.

Yep. We can do better than “ok” but RT has had more postseason success than Shaka. He will likely get us 5, maybe 6 NCAAT wins in his 3 seasons (4 already) and CDC will hire someone for us to be in contention for SEC titles and deep runs.

RT ain’t that guy, but his tenure has been better than Shaka and Beard fucked it up

Tournament success is obviously highly correlated with regular season success. If you are a 4 seed or better, the odds are that you will periodically make the Sweet 16 or better. If you are always a 10 seed you are stuck hoping for a favorable matchup just to win a game.

We need a coach who never misses the tournament and considers it a failure if seeded 5 or lower. We don’t need one who always has us on the bubble and hoping that an 8-10 conference record is enough to make it in. That kind of program wouldn’t be good enough for any other sport at UT.

I would be shocked if we won two tournament games this year. I think it is more likely that we miss the tournament completely.

With the interior defense and rebounding void we have, making the tournament would be a victory.  That said, roster building is on the coach.  We didn't need an all conference center or power forward, just a couple guys that could come in and do the dirty work.  Instead we are a team of large guards/small forwards.  I am somewhat optimistic about our point play improving, but our center play is dreadful and will spell our doom when we get into the SEC games, absent some unanticipated, sudden improvement.

as for Rodney, if he doesn’t do well this year he’s probably gone anyway

This seems really hard for some folks to understand. RT had to be given the job under the circumstances and was given a fair chance to show he could bring more than expected. That chance is coming to an end bar a miracle run.

It was always going to be a paint-by-numbers picture. CDC just has to finish it and Texas can move on to the next canvas.

Which is why some of us alleged “Rodney apologists” said chill the fuck out when he got the gig.  He took over a shit show won the big 12 tournament, and was jobbed out of a final four bid.  Best year since when?  CDC  wasn’t going to fire a player and alum favorite who also happens to be African American. What would it look like if we hired the white Xavier coach we just beat?

Rodney was given a chance to prove his worth and as of right now it doesn’t look great.  He has a 5 game gauntlet, if we win only 1 of those CDC is likely going to start back channeling.  This was the only way. CDC has literally nailed every hire.   He’s not a dumb ass. Let it play.

But if by some chance he makes a tourney run, don’t fucking cry if we keep him especially if you’re in the “tournament doesn’t matter” crowd

Seriously. What message do you send to potential hires if we didn’t hire RT? Oh hey this guy, a former assistant under your most successful coach, who held the team together after CB’s personal life imploded and led you to a Big 12 tournament title and your first E8 since 2008 and was one bad call from a Final Four, isn’t good enough for the job because…. And he had 3 more NCAAT wins in his interim season than the last guy, who got 6 years, had - which was NONE

yeah we would have been rightly crucified. The RT tenure isn’t going to drag out like Shaka because we have a real AD and he knows when it’s time to move on.

We were already getting crucified by the talking heads.  The R word was bubbling.  Now we can say “eff it we will hire who we want” but CDC is too smart to be brazen and cocky for the sake of it.  Yes if the other hire wins right away it’s probably forgotten but why risk it.  Rodney either passes or fails.  No lose scenario.  Optics can matter.  Again hiring the Xavier coach after Rodney just whipped him would’ve been a black eye.

His results for 2/3 of a season stood for it and idc that he couldn’t win at Fresno. Tark couldn’t either. CDC used the most recent data point and went with it.  Good luck not looking racist by bringing in someone he just beat

I think we would have been crucified not giving RT the job, but that would have blown over weeks later. No one would have cared about it after the tournament. That’s just our culture/society today.

I mean the same media members who were up tweeting 24/7 saying we have to fire Beard are now giving Beard interviews and writing upbeat articles about his turnaround of a shitty Mississippi program.

And yes, I think it’s pretty obvious CDC has a list ready to go and won’t hesitate when it’s time. Moody wants to get their money’s worth 💰

I appreciate CDC's approach.  I can only assume the search will be on if we don't make the tournament.  I don't think anyone who follows the sport can watch RT's career and current efforts and say he belongs in the Vic/Elliott/Sark/etc. club.  If he turns it around and makes a nice run this year, I will be thrilled.

Yup

Like I said when he was hired, I don’t want him as our coach but I’m going to root for him and the team to do well. Who wouldn’t be doing that?

I doubt it.  I think guys like Richard Justice, Kirk Bohls, etc. would be ready with articles every time Texas lost talking about how we fired a successful elite eight coach ... likely insinuating if not stating it was because of nefarious reasons.

There’s a certain group that pops up everytime one of our players misses a jumper or when the opposing team scores.  It’s like clockwork

It was just a shitty situation to be in. We should be able to publicly shame and humiliate everyone who demanded we hire a UTEP level head coach at the same time we fire him. But you won't hear anything from them.
