The SEC is crazy good this year. Going 0.500 in conference probably earns us a 6 seed.

Not gonna happen based on the shit-show we witnessed last night, unless Johnson shoots 50% + from the field every game. Too much standing around on offense and pitiful defense.

I get we are going to shoot for the stars and hiring a guy with 1 year of D1 experience would be nonstarter for some, but damn I think McCollum is a stud. He is an offense guy too. Buzz Williams said a few years ago when McCollum was still at the D2 level that he was one of the best X’s and O’s coaches in the country.

It's been alluded to in other sports that CDC likes coaches who have had success at multiple programs including a P4 one or at least had sustained high level success. Guys like Schloss, Sark is debatable but had UW, USC, Bama on his resume, the new swim coach, etc.

With that in mind, I would think Otzelberger from ISU would be realistic call #1. Nate Oats if he's interested. Bruce Pearl if he didn't have the baggage. Rick Barnes if he hadn't been fired here lol.

That said, the up-and-comer route does have potential. A bit riskier though so doesn't seem to be CDC's MO.

Isn’t it like 10+ million we’d owe Bama?

What is Nate Oats' buyout? Oats will owe Alabama $18 million if he leaves in the first two years of his new contract. After March 31, 2026, that buyout falls to $10 million until March 31, 2027. After that, it falls to $4 million for the next year and $0 after that.

Otzelberger also has an $18mm buyout AND is a former  Cyclone player.

Drake has lost their last two games.

I'm kind of holding out hope that it is Royal Ivey. He did an amazing job with South Sudan. I just don't think our opening will align with him being viewed as qualified.  And there is a decent chance that he gets an NBA job and never makes his way to the college ranks.

Idk I like Royal Ivey, yea I get the whole NIL, but shid nobody had experience in it until they did. NIL is new for everyone so it’s not like a coach is gonna be an expert, everyone is learning so why not bring a guy like that in who will rally the Texas program bringing most of the Texas X’s back.

You never know how ppl will adapt, but they’ll adapt, but what we can probably know is Ivey will most likely recruit very well and be a good X’s and O’s Coach

In spite of my great affection for Royal we cannot screw up this next hire. Our next choice has to be a coach with a history of keeping a program(s) at a high level of success at the D1 level.
The concern is RT will do just enough to squeak into the tourney and make it hard to move on, or more likely, we will be justified in moving on, but no home run hire available.
We need this BB purgatory to end, not extend it another 3 or 4 years.

A) When CDC is at the helm, any hire is available.  Mike White, Vic, Bowman, Floreal and Joffe all came from places they were having huge successes and CDC snagged them.

B) I'm not concerned that "making the tournament" is going to be an automatic save for RT.  Aston was fired, even making the tournament, and CDC had Vic in his back pocket ready to go.

If CDC has who he wants ready to go, the choice will be made relatively quickly after our last game. That's been the MO for the most part - think Mike White was the one that took the longest to announce.

Who was it that beat us in the first round, lost in the second, and then fired their coach? 15-20 years ago. Want to say NC State.

So yeah, I don't think making the tournament as say an 11 seed and losing in the first round would guarantee Terry returns next season.

All lower profile sports.  While CDC has shown he will act decisively, he's also shown he will bend to perception over rational assessment.  I will believe he fires Terry after making the tournament when I see it.
