Haven’t they both made just one Final Four in their careers?

I didn’t say Barnes was a successful tournament coach.

Byington at Vandy might be a name to keep an eye on.

Doubt it - he's been to 1 NCAAT in his entire career. He's going to need to show more postseason success before he gets a look by Texas.

His gaudy record is from coaching in the Southern, Sun Belt and CAA and he made 1 tournament with JMU.

We've had this discussion - Texas doesn't need to take a flyer on a coach that doesn't have sustained P4 success, let him prove himself elsewhere first.

That’s stupid. Theres plenty of options in between - it’s not Wade or “someone for the seminary”

I don’t think CDC touches anyone with a previous show cause. Even if it expired.

I’m skeptical of anybody who cut their teeth pre-NIL by cheating their ass off and have done nothing of note since then. Will Wade and Sean Miller fall into that category.

That Tyler guy also has been promoting the fuck out of Pitinos kid. Apparently a lot of people value his opinion fr previous boards. @Derka do you know this guy?

he’s a HS girls coach somewhere in Texas. he’s young, maybe even still in his 20’s. he’s a passionate basketball fan, but he definitely sees college basketball through a much younger lens than most of the people here, eg him not really caring about will wade’s past and him possibly not understanding that Texas has actively avoided coaches like that for a very very long time.

I’m going to choose to believe Alabama has “crashed” these last few weeks because Oats has been meeting with CDC at the Raising Cane’s in Opelousas.

Tech has also looked a bit distracted.  (Could be McCasland is finalizing his move to Baylor after Drew goes to Indiana)

Well, we did hire Frank Haith.

If they aren't meeting at Ray's, this whole thing is fucked from the jump.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/bill-self-seriously-considered-leaving-kansas-for-alma-mater-oklahoma-state-in-2024-per-report/

"Kansas coach Bill Self "seriously considered" taking the Oklahoma State job this past offseason, according to the Tulsa World's Berry Tramel. Self is an Oklahoma native who played for the Cowboys in the 1980s and later worked as an assistant there before holding his first two head coaching positions in the state at Oral Roberts and Tulsa.

The Cowboys were seeking a replacement for fired coach Mike Boynton and ultimately settled on Western Kentucky's Steve Lutz after Self opted to remain with the Jayhawks. However, Lutz's hiring only came after Oklahoma State put a "hard sell" on Self.

"Multiple Cowboy sources said OSU took a swing at Self, and Cowboy decision-makers grew increasingly confident that Self was impressed with the organization of the plan his alma mater had produced and was intrigued at the package, complete with competitive salary and budget to pay players in this new professional age of college basketball," the report read.

Asked about the report, Self on Friday said "I spoke to them, answered questions about the job and offered my opinion about what is needed to win in our league, which I have done every time the job has opened. "

We make Billy Donovan say no!

The more I'm thinking of it I think my number 1 attainable candidate might be Dusty May. Buyout info:

Sean Miller was the hot name before RT was hired but his career seems to be on the downward slope.

Dusty May signed an extension with Michigan (Indiana was going after him)

Bill Self compared the way Oklahoma State gets treated by the NCAA with Phog Magic, and quickly moved past any inclination, however significant, with swift and bold determination.

Self has the #2 player signed for 2025. I don’t think they’re that down bad bc of NIL. They got the #14 player last year and some good transfers.

Just seems like his health issues + age are probably contributing to KU’s issues. Plus fuck any team with Hunter Dickinson

Which programs are the Alabama/OUs of the hoops world that are now losing a competitive advantage due to NIL?

Sounds like KU for sure.  Kentucky?

Um. UNC is worse than both of those teams this season.

I'm not sure if any of them are struggling because of NIL, though. Kentucky is breaking in a new coach, UNC needs a new coach, Kansas is having a down year and may be coach-shopping in a couple seasons.

Then you have Duke who appears to be fucking crushing the NIL game.

Gerry has been mentioning Sean Miller quite a bit of late... this is what he wrote earlier today.

Quote

And I'm not saying he is option No. 1 or there aren't other quality coaches ...

But he checks very important boxes for me:

Strong talent evaluation ... he hit on a lot of guys at Zona. That includes international players (an area Texas needs to be much stronger in the future). It's easy to say, he just signed highly ranked players ... but he did a damn good job of hitting on the highly ranked kids/developing them when others around the sport have struggled.

Putting a talented team together on the court that actually plays at a high level.

One of the winningest active coaches in the NCAA Tournament. 4 Elite 8's, 8 Sweet 16's and an overall record of 21-12.

Plays a pace an style that acceptable/needed.

Here is what's most important for me ... it was mentioned above:

You give a proven winner that has evaluated players at a high level 3.5-4 mill in NIL ... and he's going bring you a lot of W's. I'm not saying an NC (nobody ever has at Texas), but he would evaluate and build a roster and coach that roster to give you an opportunity in the SEC and in March Madness IMO.

***And here is a final piece if UT job opens ... Texas isn't going to go pay a CBK coach 7-9 million a year more than likely. So who is the best coach Texas could hire in the 4.5-5 mill range that could maximize a 3.5-4 mill future NIL roster ... Sean Miller should be on that list of guys considered.

He was going to be the hire last go round, if RT hadn't got the job.

That trilly Donovan on social media (I think he’s been right about several things over the years) says he’s hearing Quin Snyder again. I’m hoping that’s something to throw everyone off because fuck no.

He'd be a better basketball coach than Rodney Terry.

I get there isn’t a super obvious candidate outside of several of the pipe dreams people will try to will into existence, but man it I would have some questions about how serious we are about this thing if we fire Rodney Terry to hire someone like Brad Brownell.
