That trilly Donovan on social media (I think he’s been right about several things over the years) says he’s hearing Quin Snyder again. I’m hoping that’s something to throw everyone off because fuck no.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quin_Snyder

58 y/o

Memphis Missouri head coach from '99-'06 and had an Elite Eight run and two round-of-32's.
Had some recruiting violations and three years are missing from Memphis Missouri  record at Wikipedia. But it looks like they were an NIT team during that period of time.

  • He finished with a 126–91 record over seven years

He was the Austin Toro's coach from 2007-2010.  So, he's obviously familiar with the area. He coached the D-League All Star game one year.

  • During his three-year tenure in Austin, Snyder compiled more wins and guided more players to the NBA than any other coach in the D-League.

"Overachieved" somewhat as the Head coach of the Utah Jazz  from 2014–2022 (shitty rosters, if I remember correct).
Was the Western Conference NBA All Star coach one year.  Had a .722 record and lost in the conference semi-finals in 2020-21.

Hasn't really done much as head coach of Atlanta Hawks since 2022.  Sub .500 team.  One playoff trip.  Currently employed but sitting on a warm seat I'm sure.

IDK anything about him.  I'm just reciting Wikipedia.
I'm not crazy about his choice in frame color.

Basketball school with a rabid fan base that leads their league in attendance as opposed to school where basketball isn’t even the second most popular sport on campus?

CDC wants hoops to be a major attraction and he got a taste of it with Beard. a big part of his pitch to a coach like  lloyd will be, “we didn’t build the moody center because we don’t care about basketball, we built it because we’re serious about making Texas Hoops a top 10 national program like pretty much every other team around here. you’re gonna be the guy who sells this place out every night.”

and if CDC hires him i’m down with it. he’s a really good coach, he’s just been out of CBB for a very long time, and a lot has changed.

WBB is sitting on a streak of 4 straight tournament appearances and lost in the in the championship game in 2021. Not exactly suckage.

Well since that runner up finish, 21-8, 22-10, 18-16, currently 17-12 and middle of the Big 12 pack

I don’t disagree that that would be the pitch, but I would be very surprised if it would work for Lloyd. He’s already at a basketball school that puts 15k butts in the stands in one of the best venues in college basketball. He makes $6 million a year and has never lived further east than the one year he played in Pueblo, CO. Spent 20 years as an assistant at Gonzaga. Crazier things have and will continue to happen, but I just don’t see him at Texas.

Maybe he has heard that Zona is having financial problems.  I thought that was true.

They are but it looks like Lloyd’s extension is funded by donors. So the money is there for him.

Not sure if @Al_4_ISU has any insight, but streets are saying that McCaffery *could* retire this year. If that happens, Iowa’s top targets would be Devries at WVU (who coached at Drake and played at UNI) and this boards wonder boy McCollum, the current Drake HC.

I really like what Devries has done at West Virginia.

I would be interested to see Darian DeVries get a look. Considering the roster turnover and injuries at WVU this year he's done a pretty good job.

you’re not wrong, but i felt the same way about beard, akers, and schloss. cdc seems to be the pied piper.

Seriously? Beard is a former player and alum. CDC was Schloss’s boss for nearly a decade at TCU. Neither of those hires should have surprised anyone.

the beard hire was the most shocking hire of any team i’ve ever followed in my lifetime. it looked for all the world like we had missed our window on beard when TTU signed him to a six year extension in 2019. beard was the NCOY, and TTU made him the fourth highest paid coach in the country and upped his buyout. i don’t know anyone who didn’t completely give up on the idea of hiring beard when that happened. if you’d have told any of us that he’d be the HC at Texas almost exactly two years later nobody would have believed you.

and yeah, of course we know the history between schloss and beard, but schloss had a very good thing going at aggy, could go to omaha every year at aggy, was a better fit in college station than he is in austin, and could use the Texas opening to get a fat raise at a place where he was already happy and leading the no.1 team in the country. if you think that hire was a layup then i’d say you aren’t giving CDC enough credit. i thought we’d get vitello before we got schloss. it was a lot less surprising than the beard pull, but still an impressive hire.

i was legitimately less shocked when the cubs pulled theo epstein and joe maddon than i was when texas got beard. Texas had never made a financial commitment like that to a hoops coach. i was blown away. and it was that very elation and straight up shock at his hiring (plus his ensuing/overnight success at Texas) that has me still not over it. it felt like winning the lottery and then losing the ticket.

I don’t think this is accurate at all considering he fucking hated it there. That’s not even accounting for all the swinging he likes to do.

well yeah, everyone hates having to live around aggies, so maybe it’s better to say that he’s, at least on the surface, a better fit in a traditional SEC city than he is in Austin.

Every interview he was in he seemed like he didn’t like being at A&M

Schloss hated college station and the fans became a bit much for him. It’s the closest I’ve seen to a coach saying fuck yall out in the open that I’ve ever seen. Who knows how he feels about Texas and Austin, but we know he was not a fan of aggy living.

Akers, as in Fred Akers?

god damn, the older i get the more i do this “mixing up sports figures names” thing. Vic Akers is the former HC of the Arsenal Women’s team; Fred Akers used to do a TV show with my dad; and Vic Shaefer is the guy i was trying to name.
