Oh no guys the Mizzou grad is still butthurt 20 years later better not hire Quinn.

I'm gonna clue you in on a little fact:  I have never taken a single class at Mizzou.  Drop your stupid gatekeeping.

I'm not gatekeeping I'm calling out a bias. You're a mizzou fan in one fashion or another and admitted it earlier this season - apologies for thinking you went there.

Also what the fuck is this lmfao.

Thanks, Dad.  I'm very familiar with Mizzou basketball, I did my undergrad there.  They suck ass and will retreat to the bottom half of the conference in short order.

Did you or did you not?

LOL the second Texas game I ever attended was at DKR in 1982, against Mizzou.  I rooted for Texas, as I was an undergrad on the 40 Acres.  You really aren't as smart as you think you are.

Shorthand for "University of Missouri system".  I attended the engineering school (not Mizzou's, the real engineering school) some 100 miles south of there.  D2.  Shitty sports.

I am not remotely interested in laying out the details of my CV to explain away minor details.  I grew up a MIzzou t-shirt fan, attended Texas, lost any interest in Mizzou.

Cool. I was just unclear on the details I wasn't trying to be a dick.

That said - if you "lost any interest in Mizzou" you wouldn't have such a strong opinion on Quinn Snyder - who coached there from '99 to '06. You also wouldn't be making comments like "I know all about Mizzou basketball I did my undergrad there".

I don't give a fuck where you attended school. You can be a fan of whoever. All I do is call out shitty takes in the basketball threads and you make a lot of them.

Really?  I have a similar opinion of John Calipari, and I'm not sure we've ever been in the same zip code at the same time.  I can observe Snyder from afar (not to mention his time in Austin) and draw my conclusions just fine.  I just find him insufferable.  He seems to be a decent coach.

Okay but you aren't an NBA head. I am. Your opinion on Snyder is largely - I'm guessing - based on his time at Mizzou. Which is fine - that doesn't invalidate it.

My initial reaction is that 1: you're maybe a bit biased there and 2: that was 20 years ago.

I have never heard anyone speak bad of the dude as an NBA coach outside of him having some clear substance abuse issues in the past and being overly intense at times. And it seems like a lot of that has mellowed out for him.

I think he would be a great hire - you may not think so - that's okay. That's what we are here to discuss. I just want you to be honest about why you feel the way that you do.

I find him to be a smug douchebag, and I don't want that type coaching for Texas.  As it turns out, CDC and his bosses aren't asking for my opinion.

That's fair.

At the same time - comparing someone like him to Rodney Terry is like comparing Bobby Fischer to a 7th grade regional chess champion.

Oh, I've been a bit hyperbolic on this, but trust me, I think RT needs to go, and if it's Snyder up next, I'll deal with it.  I'm pretty sure the program would improve.

FWIW, and it’s not much, Snyder was a customer of sorts of a business that was part of my territory in SLC when he coached the Jazz. The people that had to interact with him said he was always a smug pain in the ass that expected special treatment when he came in.

If "being a douchebag" is a non-starter then I guess Texas can keep being irrelevant.

Being a douchebag got Tom Herman fired and David Pierce run out of town. Their replacements seem to be better

Lack of results got those two fucks fired.

I don't know. Austin is full of Grade A douchebags.

It’s not an either/or

Why don't you quit commenting and let the adults talk about who the next coach should be.

David Pierce was more successful at Texas than Chris Beard, Rodney Terry, and Tom Herman combined.

Then who would you hire to fit that criteria.

Basketball is dirty and nasty at every level.

Urban Meyer obviously

Because he’s a good nba coach

Is he? Seems fairly average to me, possibly a bit better than average. This is his 11th season as an NBA coach. In his previous 10 full seasons, what's his high point? He's never made it past the conference semi-finals (3 conf semi's, 4 first round exits, 3 misses). His career winning % in the regular season is is .566 (not bad), in the playoffs it's .404 (not great).

His career high point is probably the run to the elite 8 in '02 as a 12 seed, but in his 6 full seasons as a college head coach, he never finished higher than 5th in the big XII.

Would I prefer him to RT?  1000%. But I would be somewhat underwhelmed. For the money we would have to pay him, fuck no. His salary of $8M would make him the 3rd highest paid coach in cbb today. He ain't that.

Maybe it's just that I'm not that high on him, but if that's who we ended up with, I wouldn't hate it, but I would feel that we missed a golden opportunity when Texas resources are separating from the pack.

Can't believe it's already 25 years ago.

But way back then, my Orlando Magic hired an NHL Hockey GM named John Weisbrod as it's General Manager.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Weisbrod

Fans everywhere were hoping it meant the start of the Orlando Magic taking on a tough and fearless edge, like many hockey teams are known for.
He didn't last long as the GM, but I still think the idea was a good one.  Just, poorly executed and he didn't receive enough support from other Management.
And TMAC ended up being a pussy who couldn't handle playing for a tough guy.

I'd love to see the Longhorns become known as a rough 'n tough team to play against.
Dirty?!  Fine.  Let's do it now.

I'm on record as being a Tommy Lloyd guy, and I'd certainly love guys like TJ Otz, May, and even the flyers like Few and Oats. I think Lloyd is definitely in play for the mere reason that UofA is struggling financially. Even if they get a booster to pick up the raise, there's still the issue of the AD having to come up with another 20M (if maxed) for NIL. Texas will gladly pay that, give all its coaches raises if deserved, and probably still turn a tidy profit. This era of college athletics kind of sucks tbh, but its clear that the schools with the greatest resources have a bigger advantage than ever. Throw in Austin, the corporate NIL etc, I think you will be surprised who will consider this gig.

And I also think CDC is a huge plus, as in coaches realizing that he's not some retired meathead now running an athletic department. His hires to date have been pretty damn solid, with the exception of RT, and that was a weird scenario. Again, if Quinn Snyder is our coach, we'll be better off than we are now. But I'd probably rather a college guy that has been deep in recruiting for the last few years than another coach with a thing for ladies eyewear.

Good stuff.

Quin is not my #1. I think my #1 is Billy D.

That said - I think CDC has a feel for this shit.

He's going to get someone good. Someone better than RT, that's for sure.

The main thing a head coach must have is a strategic vision for a roster and the ability to manage it year over year.

Coaches come to Texas and they get blinded by the ability to bring on high level talent without any real vision for how all the pieces are going to fit together.

I'd also say they need to be able to identify, attract, and retain high level support personnel, from S&C, to the assistant staff, to support staff.

It would be helpful if they had a bit of huckster in them to fire up the fanbase, because we kind of need that as a fanbase.

I feel like what I just described is Chris Beard, without the girlfriend choking issues. So find someone like that.

I like Tommy Lloyd best, but he's not a huckster by any stretch of the imagination. He's a little dull to listen to a great deal of the time. But I really like him as the head of a program. I don't know who the realistic options are. But I trust CDC to go after the best option he has available to him, whoever that might be.

I agree with all of this and it's exactly why I said two years ago that we would be precisely where we are right now. RT has had plenty of years to show that he has the capacity to run a program at a high level. And he hasn't.

Snyder is a C- hire, Mackovic vibes.

22 years since his last tournament win, 5 total tournament wins (RT has 4 in the last 2), 56-50 B12 record. Hard pass.

He’s kind of been coaching in the NBA since then…
