Is this the current wish list to select from for the next Texas men's basketball coach?

  1. Tommy Lloyd - Arizona

  2. Billy Donovan – Chicago NBA
  3. Dan Hurley – Connecticut
  4. Nate Oates - Alabama
  5. Royal Ivy – Houston NBA
  6. Jai Lucas – Miami
  7. Jay Wright - retired
  8. Sean Miller - Xavier

What are the chances it is one of these eight?

Jai Lucas just took that job, he's not going to ditch out that fast.

I also do not see Wright ever getting back into the game.   The dude is 63 and lost his edge and passion.  You're better off trying to get Tony Bennett, who is 8 years younger, by telling him you'll hire a GM to handle the NIL stuff.

Kind of like he would be able to do with NIL at Texas if we prioritized it?

Texas fans would take 3 Elite 8s, 5 2nd weekend appearances, and 5 conference championships in a heartbeat. Please give us the results that Miller produced at Arizona.

Would we?  It’s certainly better than Texas has done for a long time, but if you asked me if I would take three elite eights and no final fours, I would probably hold out for the chance at more.

The goal of sports is to win championships, especially at a high level like D1 basketball and NBA. Not making final 4s means you have no shot at winning championships. While it would be good for program to make elite 8s it means nothing if you can't take the next step. Might as well get the coach that you think can take you all the way.

Our entire basketball history at Texas, men and women, is 6 Final Fours.

There's probably a bunch of schools who can match that just in the last decade.

But that's a terrible way to evaluate fit.

You can find coaches that are on the cusp of greatness that just need better resources/talent. Prime example is our track/field coach (Floreal). He had a really good program at Kentucky but just needed better resources at Texas to finally win a couple national championships.

The same is probably going to be true in softball with Mike White.

I think Gerry was referring to Miller’s time at Arizona. I guess he had a bunch of international players there?  IDK.

International Recruiting

[edit]

During his 12 seasons at Arizona, Miller signed a total of 13 international players. This group included six that would go on play in the NBA - highlighted by the first pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Deandre Ayton (Bahamas), 2023 NBA All-Star and the 2023 NBA Most Improved Player Award winner Lauri Markkanen (Finland) and Bennedict Mathurin (Canada). Nine of Miller's international signees would be named All-Conference including 2022 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year Bennedict Mathurin (Canada) and 2018 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year Deandre Ayton (Bahamas).[31]

Mike White never went to the national title series at Oregon.  He's been twice at Texas.

Joffe had a runner up finish at aggy but won 2 titles at Texas

yeah, I think Sean Miller fits the profile to a T of what Del Conte wants. So I'm not surprised his name is being thrown around.

I also think what is intriguing is that Sark sort resurrected himself as a HC at Texas.  Miller could do the same with the right leadership and support system that CDC can provide.

Where the hell did this narrative come from?  Miller literally has zero international talent on his current Xavier roster.

From the international guys he brought to Arizona. Europeans don't want to move 3,000 miles to go to Xavier. Texas, however...

Been saying that for months - Austin would kill it with international recruits if the coach wants to recruit them.

I predict that a large number of posters on this board will be unhappy with whoever we hire, but then will be happy if the hire turns out to be a bad one, so they can post "I told you so."

If Spo is available, who's else is available that's better?

He's not going to be available. He's not on the hot seat. He's the best coach in the NBA and the Heat aren't going to fire him. If for some reason he's not with the Heat, he'd be the strongest NBA coaching free agent in awhile

I know shit about fuck. But my take:

We can dream:

Dan Hurley

Billy Donovan

Nate Oats

Bruce Pearl

Varying levels of satisfied, maybe more likely:

Mark Few

Sean Miller

TJ Otz

Not that happy (not enough proof):

Royal Ivey

Tommy Lloyd

Ben McCollum

god damn mcneese looks awesome. i honestly don’t see any difference in wade and miller scandal-wise other than the show-cause, and i think i speak for most of us here when i say id rather have wade than miller. i would be really interested in hearing why we won’t touch a guy like wade if we do end up hiring miller.

Because he hasn't accomplished much?

Wade has only made the 2nd weekend 1 time in his entire career. I do think Wade is a good coach though that will likely win if you give him resources.

Did Wade even coach that postseason or was it his suspension?

Yup. I’ve said before I’d be all in on Will Wade

And I’m pretty sure what he and Miller got in trouble for is now legal and nobody cares or talks about their past like that.

no, because he’s leveled our and is no longer the rising star that he was a decade ago. you’ve got this sean miller:

yep, i’d like to hire him. but then you’ve got this sean miller:

IMG_7461.thumb.jpeg.c4007c7c5dde8208b0fe93a00e571b65.jpeg

so he falls off a cliff at arizona, gets canned for rampant cheating, gets welcomed back home at xavier, finishes 56th and 40th in kenpom the last two years, and would be willing to bolt from xavier *again* after they welcomed his cheating, losing ass with open arms.

that’s why i don't want it to be sean miller.

Thank you. He is a cuck, no thanks.
