Do you have some personal aversion here? If we're making a list of the top 10 or so potential candidates based on what we know now (which admittedly isn't a lot) I'd have both Snyder and Oats on there.

My personal aversion is that they aren't realistic candidates

Ohhhh you're doing the "poor ol' Texas won't be able to hire a good coach" thing. Never mind.

This isn't college football where your option is to "money whip" a coach you've heard of. Major programs hire successful coaches in myriad ways, including drafting from the mid majors

It seems crazy now, but do you remember how in demand Shaka Smart was when we hired him? That was more of a holy shit hire than Oats would be.

And I'm not saying we'll hire him. Or Snyder. But I think it's fair to label them as "potential candidates" and to not lump them in with dead guys.

Shaka had a $500,000 buyout to leave VCU. Nate Oats has an $18,000,000 buyout to leave Bama.

Snyder is probably making the NBA playoffs and will have NBA suiters in the low likelihood chance that Atlanta fires him.

It's more productive to list realistic candidates

No, Oats would be more of a holy shit hire than Shaka was.

He doesn't like what's in his current closet? They don't even wear suits anymore.

Shaka was a bigger name for sure. And had turned down some pretty big jobs (I think UCLA and Indiana?)

Size of the buyout notwithstanding.

Sampson is a non-starter because he’s going to retire at Houston and has said that a billion times. He has everything he needs and his program is at the elite level. He doesn’t need to leave and start over. He has also set his son up to be the next HC there.

People who keep mentioning Sampson as a legit hire are just admitting they have no clue about college basketball.

Was the football thread like this before Sark? I can’t remember.

Even the last basketball hiring cycle here I clearly remember a handful of people kept saying "make Jay Wright say no"

WTF? When we hired Shaka, he had managed 1 win in his last 4 NCAA tournaments, with only the single run to the final 4 as an accomplishment worthy of a big promotion. Oats has 9 wins over his last 4 tournaments, was in the final 4 last year, and has this year's squad ranked #5 heading into the tourney. A Oats hire would be an order of magnitude greater in "holy shit" than shaka. He's a far superior coach AND coaching at a school with far superior financial resources for its athletic programs than VCU.

Why? Shaka was one of the most in demand coaches and turned down tons of jobs. Then he took the Texas job

He was one of the more in demand coaches a year or 2 after his FF, yes. The years after his FF were:

- L in 2nd round

- L in 2nd round

- L in 1st round

- L in 1st round

He wasn’t as in demand those last 2 years, not nearly as much as after that first year. I thought it was UCLA who wanted Shaka baaaaad.

And people were telling Shaka to take the Texas job because his shine was wearing off and he may not get another P5 offer.

Now Oats? After his stint at Buffalo, here is what he’s done at Alabama:

Y1: nothing

Y2: S16

Y3: R32

Y4: S16

Y5: Final Four

Add in the fact that Oats is already at a low pressure football school and has everything he needs and has his program at one of the tops in the nation, I think it’s safe to say it would be a bigger get than Shaka. Also, no one is even listing Oats on their lists of possible replacements, no one meaning media folks.

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that Oats would be a bigger pull, but he has been mentioned by media.  Kirk Bohls (I know) mentions him in his list of 5-6 coaches.  https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/college/longhorns/article/ut-basketball-coaching-20214914.php

yep. word was UCLA was still interested when we were interested.  He had had interest from what I would consider the tier below the bluebloods(Illinois, NC St and the like) a couple of years out from the FF but was apparently looking for closer to blueblood tier.

Paying 18m and stealing a P1 coach who currently has his program humming at a championship caliber level vs  "stealing" a midmajor coach with buyout 1/36th the size.

Entertaining Oats is a waste of time and bandwith IMO so it would be exponentially more shocking to me.

It really is amazing anyone pays him anymore.  his job must be extremely easy now.  wake up, flip in the computer and do a search on "Rodney Terry replacement", "next basketball coach at Texas". etc and copy what you see.

* This is not necessarily an endorsement for hiring Ivey*

After BYU hired an NBA assistant without HC experience, now their rival Utah does the same

https://x.com/GoodmanHoops/status/1897692059533730267

We should be able to do better than Ivey, but there are recent examples of NBA assistants getting collegiate HC jobs

And now FSU has also gone this route
