I've always thought that the reason Beard was fired wasn't so much about what he did but moreso about the chances of him doing it again. If they didn't think he was willing to make the life choices necessary to avoid being in the same scenario, than it wasn't worth the risk to bring him back. Not sure anything has changed on that front.

The $9.95ers have alluded to it being his behavior after the fact that led to him being fired. Strident, defiant, refusing to cooperate or show contrition. He couldn't even be bothered to pretend he was sorry for the shitshow of a mess he made.

No.  I’d eat a shoe if TJ left for Texas.  Your job opening up this spring doesn’t concern me.

I’m also a Drake alum, and have been very impressed with what McCollum has done thus far.  He’s not staying at a mid major long, and what I really don’t want is Iowa to hire him.  I’d much rather he go out of the Midwest.

Amazing to me that anyone would react "F you" to this post.  Tells me that you, like Beard, are also probably a scumbag.

Anyone who thinks that the night of his arrest was the first and only dust up that Beard has had with a female is a moron.  I guess you think he was just unlucky.  His reaction after the fact, with zero contrition, shows that he doesn't have the self awareness needed to coach somewhere like UT.

This is not a man of high character. Period. The fact that he left UNLV 19 days into his tenure, just days after signing a 5 year contract, should have been a clue. I can't recall another time when a coach has done that.

Any current UT supporters of Beard come across as desperate and pathetic.  We can do better.

Oh definitely not. But Lubbock and Oxford police would likely brush it under the rug. The spotlight is bigger in Austin

LOLz.  Sergio Kindle would like a word.  Maybe call Art Acevedo and discuss accountability.

and no, I'm not gonna remotely defend LBK police, but come the fuck on.

Yeah, I don't think Texas has a chance with Otzelberger. I'm just hanking your chain.

But I do honestly/earnestly think McCollum could really succeed with high major resources.  He's been a Midwest lifer at this stage, but the guy has an eye for talent and can get a roster to work well together.  I don't know if UT fans feel like a good year in the MVC after a DII run is enough of a track record, but I think he'd do well in Austin.

Plus (and this is my chief motivator if I'm being honest) it keeps him out of Iowa City or Manhattan or Lincoln or Minneapolis or some place where he'd be recruiting against us with some actual resources.

If Otz actually did leave, he would be at the top of my preferred replacement list (after making a run at DeVries of course).

Wtf is the point of this post? Beard didn't get away with the same things in Austin that he got away with in Lubbock. "What about Sergio Kindle, what about Art Acevedo" what about them? Because they're doing so awesomely these days right?

Art Acevedo hasn't been the APD Chief since 2016
Sergio Kindle was 15 years ago

The point is there is no higher degree of accountability in Austin PD.  High horse trip is trippy.

Flipside to that discussion is that Texas absolutely gets credit for handling it the right way.  It was not an easy decision( maybe it was, but the program cost was great.)

I was disputing how much impact the local PD had.

Who do y'all think are out the top 3 candidates for next head coach of Texas Men's Basketball as of now?

Ben McCollum is definitely top 3, especially if he does well in the tournament.

With CDC running the show, everyone and anyone.

No one had Mike White, Vic Schaefer, Bob Bowman, Laura Ianello, etc. in their top candidate list when CDC pulled them from their current schools, where they were super successful P5 head coaches with big postseason success - White went to 5 WCWS at Oregon (and they haven't been back since), Schaefer had 2 NCAA tournament finals appearance at freaking Miss St (and their only Final Fours ever), Ianello won a title in 2018, Bowman was just coming off a title at ASU....

The only "obvious" one was Schloss, because of their relationship, and he was coming off a runner-up finish and a set up for a #1 ranked roster in 2025.

So I totally believe the next guy up for MBB is going to be someone we don't fully expect and it will be a great hire with skins on the wall.

Schloss may have been the most obvious but I thought he was the least likely.  I think CDC could pull almost anyone, maybe even Jay Wright

~$30m. Just signed an extension with mega buyout

Better check those numbers. He makes only $3M a year, which is less than RT's salary, I think. Is the buyout amount the money the university would owe him if they were to fire him or is it what a school has to pay to hire him away? At any rate, I think it was $18M as of las july.

It's not just that she's ISU lore - Central Iowa is literally her adopted home.  She's an Australian native who came here knowing no one and remains close to her host family.  His family is in Milwaukee on top of that.  His HS recruiting is almost exclusively based out of Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Kansas City, and even a large chunk of his portal targets are Midwest natives looking to get closer to home.

Obviously Texas has way more money than ISU, and more in-state talent, but I just have a hard time seeing him leaving period at this point, especially for a job where basketball takes such a back seat in a part of the country he doesn't have many/any HS recruiting connections, so far away from both he and his wife's respective homes.

It's a lot different situation than Hoiberg.  Hoiberg and his wife both grew up in Ames and they felt smothered by the hometown hero/everyone knows their family/knows their business type of thing that can accompany life in a provincial smaller college town.  Hoiberg ultimately felt trapped by his legacy as The Mayor and wanted out of the fishbowl.  Otz and his wife both chose this place to put their roots down and build their life.  This is his third stint at ISU (twice as an assistant).  He's extremely invested here.

Doesn't mean he'd never leave, but I just don't see a job like Texas being the one he'd leave for.  Not that Texas isn't/can't be a great job, it just doesn't seem like a good fit for him.  Frankly, I'd be more concerned about Wisconsin than Texas.

CDC is a magician when it comes to hiring coaches away from other programs. You have some good points but I don't think any of those are insurmountable barriers to hiring him. It's not like you're asking him to leave south of France for College Station.

I don't see this ending well for RT but yes, two close losses to top 5 teams does not get someone fired.

Cronin doesn't appear to be enjoying the new B10 schedule. Think he only has a few years left on his deal.

Almost wonder if Texas couldn't do better, though.

Would Dustin May leave Michigan?

Did an incredible job at FAU and has already turned around Michigan in 1 year. He's legit.

He’s one of the top names for Indiana. Not sure he’d leave Michigan for Texas after 1 year unless Michigan NIL is just shit.

His alma mater is Indiana so that would make sense.

Another name I think is interesting is Scott Drew. It seems like it might be getting a little stale at Baylor.

I'm not sure what the extension looked like this past offseason but he definitely had some interest in the Louisville and Kentucky jobs. Is Baylor's NIL good enough in this environment?

In his last 8 years at NW Missouri St he was 253-21 (0.923) with four National Titles (and would have been a 5th if Covid didn't cancel 2020).  Is that good?  Seems good.

My grandpa went to the business school at NWMS in Maryville.
They probably were using peach baskets for goals then.

At this point, I just want to feel secure that RT is gone. Drew would probably win and that’s all I care about.  But, I certainly understand your sentiment.

These arguments are always hilarious when it comes to coaching searches. Nobody will give a shit about how popular or likeable Scott Drew is if he wins here.

I'd agree. Rodney Terry was pretty "popular" among the alumni and fans, but look where that got us. I hate the fact that Ole Miss is good in Chris Beard's second year and we suck. CDC needs to make a homerun hire and I trust him when he decides to make the change.

you don’t know your Texas Basketball history. he’s not some random, unlikable coach. dan hurley, brad underwood, mock cronin, and plenty more all fit that bill. Scott Drew is public enemy no.1 here. he is hated; he is loathed; rick barnes would have punched scott drew in his nose on national tv if he could have gotten away with it. as far as texas hoops is concerned in 2025 he is the antichrist. just like nolan richardson was before you were born, scott drew is a non starter.

Posted

chris beard coming back would be wildly more popular than scott drew being the hire. if all you care about is winning and you don’t care about popularity then you want chris beard back, you don’t suggest scott fucking drew.
