Here’s a crack at the “CDC criteria” list, in a vacuum and in no particular order.  I’ve at least tried to weed out guys like Self, Scheyer, and Izzo who aren’t going anywhere, and I’ve excluded former Texas coaches. I’m also not limiting it to P4 necessarily because the Big East still has juice.

Brad Brownell (Clemson)

Rick Pitino (St. John’s)

Greg McDermott (Creighton)

Dan Hurley (UConn)

Sean Miller (Xavier)

Dusty May (Michigan)

Matt Painter (Purdue)

Greg Gard (Wisconsin)

Mick Cronin (UCLA)

Kevin Willard (Maryland)

Brad Underwood (Illinois)

Dana Altman (Oregon)

Kelvin Sampson (Houston)

Tommy Lloyd (Arizona)

Grant McCasland (Texas Tech)

TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State)

Scott Drew (Baylor)

Bruce Pearl (Auburn)

Nate Oats (Alabama)

Chris Jans (Miss State)

Mark Few (Gonzaga)

Jay Wright (Retired)

Tony Bennett (Retired)

Well just off that list -

Pitino, Hurley, Painter, Altman, Sampson, Wright and Bennett are non-starters.  Age, tenure, retired and not interested in coming back.  And for Hurley, no way we poach a 2 time NCAA champ, and he's kind of a huge tool.

Oats has the huge buyout

Pearl has had NCAA issues, so I doubt CDC is interested, just like Wade

Derka will self-immolate if its Drew, so no

Few and Underwood - idk.  There was the rumor Few was "interested" before we decided to promote RT

Miller was the "name" before we beat them in the Sweet 16.

I do think a candidate pool of Miller, Cronin, Lloyd, McCasland, TJO and Jans would be very good.  With Few as a darkhorse.

From that list, I’d probably rule out Pitino (old), Hurley (entrenched), Altman (old), Sampson (old), Pearl (fuckface), Drew (fuck him), Wright (stays retired), and Bennett (stays retired) but I guess you never know.

yeah i’m all-in on lloyd, i think a lot of us are. and he would be right in line with other cdc hires like Vic and Schloss in terms of him being a known quantity at this level and a great fit at this school and in this city.

I think you definitely push 5 things on him:

UT ain't broke
You get more exposure playing in the SEC because of a better TV deal
Austin is a huge sell for international recruits, unlike Tucson or Spokane. You did well there with them, but you could do better here
Moody Center
No more road trips from Tucson to Central Florida, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Iowa

Brad Brownell (Clemson) mid

Rick Pitino (St. John’s) great coach but too old and wouldn't get past compliance at Texas

Greg McDermott (Creighton) 60+ I doubt he would leave Creighton

Dan Hurley (UConn) not attainable

Sean Miller (Xavier) has looked very bad the past two years

Dusty May (Michigan)

Matt Painter (Purdue) not leaving purdue

Greg Gard (Wisconsin) mid

Mick Cronin (UCLA)

Kevin Willard (Maryland) mid

Brad Underwood (Illinois) 60+

Dana Altman (Oregon) 65+

Kelvin Sampson (Houston) not attainable

Tommy Lloyd (Arizona)

Grant McCasland (Texas Tech)

TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State)

Scott Drew (Baylor) end of the world for texas basketball hire but I think he could be attainable

Bruce Pearl (Auburn) not attainable

Nate Oats (Alabama) not attainable

Chris Jans (Miss State)

Mark Few (Gonzaga) 60+, not leaving Gonzaga

Jay Wright (Retired) never happening

Tony Bennett (Retired)  would be terrible hire

is a championship pedigree coach

Dude quit parroting this. Do you understand how big the gap is between D1 and D2 basketball? There are 68 teams that make the NCAA tournament every season. Then there are 32 teams that make the NIT. Then there are 16 teams that make the CBI. Then there are 150 really mediocre to downright bad teams. Then there are 100 truly awful teams. THEN there is D2.

McCollum won 4 titles in D2 and the best job he was able to parlay that into was Drake - who needed a new coach because their previous coach - who went 55-15 in his last two seasons - took the West Virginia job - which is a full tier if not two tiers below the Texas job.

Drake is a fun story this season but McCollum has done nothing yet but keep the momentum of the previous HC. Drake has played fucking NOBODY. They are 60th in KenPom vs. 53rd last season. They are 56th in NET vs. 49th last season. Cool? They won't make the tournament unless they win their conference.

So - please explain to the rest of us - what exactly makes him qualified to coach Texas and why in the fuck would CDC hire this dude?

Do you not understand what a championship pedigree means? Like holy fuck dude. Winners win.

You're right championship pedigree at the second level of college basketball should be completely ignored. Ohio State should have never hired Jim Tressel. Got it!

We're 35th in KenPom and we're absolutely dog shit. So spare me the KenPom bullshit

Let's just hire whoever won the women's high school championship in New Hampshire last season because they have championship pedigree.

Just a hunch, but I suspect the best D2 teams could beat a bunch of those lower-tier D1 teams.  Not that your point doesn't have some validity, but this isn't soccer with relegation and promotion, either.

OK some points

1. Texas doesn't need to "take a flier"

2. CDC has a history of hiring coaches at Texas now, besides Sark(not totally his call), he has a type

3. Ben McCollum doesn't seem to be that type.  Ben McCollum, seems to be a very good coach and who knows, could be come Jim Tressel but I don't think CDC is gonna take that chance after Terry.

4. We need to see the season end and thank Terry for his service.

5. my bet is we ask Few and then move to Lloyd

Sure, but the risk is you get another Shaka or the litany of G5 coaches who couldn’t hack it at a big time schools

Texas shouldn’t be taking “risks.” You let other schools take the risk and then you flex you muscle and wallet and steal them

If CDC doesn't want him I trust that judgment, same for if he does. I just see it as looking at all your options.

I definitely agree with not hiring a guy like Shaka because he made one flukey run in the tournament. We basically did the same with RT.

They usually don’t when they play in official exhibition games.

I’ve only seen 1 D2 team beat a lower level D1 team in an exhibition, and that was on a last second shot. This was nearly 10 years ago.

Part of me thinks CDC would just LOVE to go after Oats. 18M is steep but if it was next year I think absolutely 10M is on the table.  it is one of the 2 revenue sports and #1 seems to be doing OK.  you have a brand new arena.  Announce your presence...

It took about 10 sec with google to find Fort Hays State beating Kansas State 81-68 in a 2020 exhibition, in Manhattan.  FHSU went 11-11 that year.  KSU went 9-20.

Chaminade has won 8 times against D1 teams in the Maui Invitational, including (ahem) beating Texas, along with Providence, Oklahoma, Stanford and Villanova.  They also beat ranked Louisville teams twice, although that was a long time ago.

Augustana beat Iowa in 2015.  The former won the D2 title, but Iowa made the round of 32.

Point Loma beat the shit out of Pepperdine a few years back.  Barry beat Auburn in 2017.  Grand Valley State beat #8 Michigan State in 2007.

It happens.

Again, please stop comparing promoting RT to the upcoming search or past searches. It was not an open search. Apples and oranges. The job was never officially posted, IIRC. It was a straight interim promotion. He did not pass over interviewing anyone, the circumstances were to give RT an okay, shorter contract and make a change after a couple years if it didn’t work out.

Huge upsets happen all across college basketball in general. The point is that there is a massive gulf between playing a season in a D2 conference and playing a season in the B12 or SEC. Texas isn't hiring a guy because he had success in D2. Let someone else take a flier then evaluate from there if the dude turns out to excel in D1.

There's no reason for CDC and Texas to roll the dice on a potential flameout when we all know that CDC can hire almost anyone he wants.

I was responding to someone countering my point that upper D2 teams could beat lower D1 teams from time to time.  In point of fact, they can actually beat upper D1 teams from time to time.  Let's not lose sight of what I was saying.  I didn't say their schedule is as tough or that they would fare well against a D1 schedule.

Oats was my #1 for forever.

I think that ship has sank, though. He has everything he needs to get Alabama to the FF, the Alabama basketball job is less pressure than the Texas job, and he got the arena thing that he was holding over Alabama figured out so there’s that.

I’d love for us to get him though. I think Indiana will go after him if they fail with Stevens and May.

well he’s done a lot more to prove himself since then. it wasn’t just that he only had experience at UNT (although that was a big issue), there were also issues like the fact that he played at the slowest tempo in america, and that he hadn’t proven that he could recruit well or do well in the portal at a big time school. now at tech he’s beaten us out for toppin, (a better player than any of our transfers) he’s not playing as slowly as he was at UNT, he’s got wins over houston, arizona, baylor, byu, etc, and he currently has the no.9 offense and no.38 defense in america. Texas hires that guy *after* he’s proven he can do all of that, not before.

Texas is a better, prettier, richer version of alabama, and Austin >>> Tuscaloosa. i’ve never let myself for even one moment think that we will be able to land oats, but in theory it’s at least conceivable, especially given cdc’s track record. when we recruit a HC to take over one of these premier positions at UT, you gotta know that when Texas comes knocking, it’s a different knock.

when CDC gets these guys on campus, shows them the facilities, introduces them to all of the other top flight, championship winning coaches, surrounds them with trophy room after trophy room, takes them around town to eat and chat, etc- it’s tempting for anyone, even the mark fews and nate oats of the world. Texas is the pinnacle of college athletics. it does not get any better than this university, this directors cup winning athletics program, and this city.

I agree with all of this, he got them to the FF last season and does seem in great position to do it again this year.

What about Otzelberger at Iowa State?

He seems similar to Oats and would be easier to get, though I know he likes where he is, and they have done everything they can to keep him.

i’ve played this before, but oats was interviews last year and asked about his offense which many think is the best in the nation. he said, “the best shots in basketball are a catch-and-shoot three, a dunk or a layup, and a FT. so thats what we do.” i already liked home before that, but i fell in love with him when i heard him say that.

and you think about the offense we’ve been putting out at Texas. off the top of my head, i don’t think we’ve had an offense that i truly enjoyed watching on a regular basis since 2011. that’s almost 15 years wandering the offensive desert. after all of the maddeningly inconsistent, low-iq offense we’ve had in recent years, seeing a nate oats product on the floor would be no less than the fans (and the moody center, and cdc) deserve.

i don’t think he’s going to leave xavier any time soon. he’s fortunate that they welcomed him back the way they did. i would say that, from a fan perspective, that mccasland has the “minimum acceptable” resume for the type of hire we’re looking for. with that said i’ll also reiterate that i have total faith in cdc, and anyone who is good enough for him will be good enough for me to blindly support and get hyped about until proven otherwise.

I believe Miller and CDC have a connection through their Arizona days. I think he would come if asked.

I also think McCasland is less obtainable because of previous events.

Something interesting to note is that nearly all of the big name programs have hired internally or from mid-majors in the last couple of years. The only exception is Mark Pope to Kentucky and he is an alumnus.

Just to follow up on this - I do realize that the set of events that led to Pope going to Kentucky also included Calipari going to Arkansas, Musselman to USC, and Enfield to SMU, but I am not sure that Texas fans want to make the sort of hire where the coach is getting out of Dodge as much as he is getting hired away.

I ddi omit a couple moves involving Big East coaches - Kevin Willard (Seton Hall to Maryland) and Ed Cooley (Providence to Georgetown).

I’m not trying to start a dust up and I’m agnostic about replacement coaches as I don’t have enough knowledge to weigh in but I did find this article interesting while reading up on some of the coaches people are mentioning.

https://www.si.com/college/gonzaga/basketball/college-basketball-analyst-thinks-gonzaga-s-mark-few-could-be-done-after-this-season-01jjaj1cm3p0

Sounds like Few has had enough of not being able to recruit in the NIL era. I also found another article where he was fining players who got a technical since they are getting paid.

Posted

Few on paper seems great but that article might be hinting that he wants to hang it up hang it up.

He could of course revitalize himself somewhere like Texas but for whatever reason I'm not in love with the idea. He's on the wrong side of 60, has been at a small West coast school FOREVER and they aren't playing very good basketball right now.

Would he be better than RT? It would be hard not to be. However I think CDC wants someone that he could see at Texas for a decade plus and Few doesn't strike me as that guy. I'd rather go after McCasland, frankly.

Posted

Yeah that reads like Few is about to join Bennett, Wright and Larranaga in the retirement home. The older coaches are having trouble navigating NIL
