Baytown's Robert E. Lee high school is 1 of 3 Texas schools to still be named after a confederate general. It's been a long-term complaint for some residents. They note someone who first brought this up in 1970.

The school board punts the question to a committee. After hearing both sides of the argument, the committee recommends no change. The school board has not formally decided on the issue.

One of the committee members is the wife of a school board member. Unsure if she has any other qualifications. She dropped this gem in the 40-person committee meeting:

Quote

“If the Blacks don’t want to be looked down upon, then raise yourselves up,” she said. “Quit being the ones on television shooting policemen.”

Now they did apparently survey the students, who are overwhelming hispanic. Pretty much they didn't want to change the name, or they didn't care.

They tried burning the school down my 8th grade year. For some reason they rebuilt it.

EDIT: Holy shit. Richard Clem... husband to the lady that made that wonderful statement was my middle school band director. He was not a fan of my antics.

"General Robert E. Lee freed the slaves."

"No he didn't Bol. That was Abe Lincoln. And it wasn't Mezkins he freed, it was a bunch of Africas."

(McMurtry spilling over into this thread.)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Robert Lee, Texas, will be the last town to have a high school named after him at some point in the far distant future.
