So, remember:  clear eyes, full heart, don’t trust Chris Plonsky with meaningful responsibilities, can’t lose.

That’s Jodi Conradt talking to the team. She might know a few things about winning a national championship in basketball.

Giving them guidance on how to become elite.

When to chase p*ssy and when to focus on hoops.

Nice to see cross-coaching. I so want us to be good this year. I'm sick of us being horrible after New Year's except for an NIT or a 2-win conference tournament title.

I don't really understand the argument based on "roster wise" in reference to Gerry Hamilton.

Are we talking playing time? Because that argument doesn't make much sense to me. Texas doesn't have a 5 on the roster although guys like Bishop and Disu can play the position. Also, Leonard Hamilton is known for playing a deep bench and playing a bunch of guys. Nobody averaged more than 28 minutes a game last season for FSU.

Sam Vecenie thoughts on the roster post-Mitchell

Spoiler

The Texas men's basketball team got a commitment from UMass transfer Tre Mitchell, the big man announced via social media on Tuesday.

Mitchell, ranked No. 3 in The Athletic's list of available college basketball players, averaged 18.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 37.5 percent from 3-point range for the Minutemen last season. The soon-to-be junior was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2020.

New coach Chris Beard has been working the transfer market this offseason, as Mitchell becomes the latest to join the Longhorns via the portal. Texas has also landed commitments from Creighton's Christian Bishop, Utah's Timmy Allen, Vanderbilt's Dylan Disu and Kentucky's Devin Askew.

What does Mitchell bring to Texas?
Sam Vecenie, NBA and college basketball writer: He's a terrific post presence and rebounder. According to Synergy, Mitchell scored 7.5 points per game out of post-ups, which was in the top 10 nationally. He has great footwork and touch inside, and made first-team All-A-10 despite only playing in eight conference games.

Texas' other transfer additions to their frontcourt this summer, Bishop, Disu and Allen, all bring really different skill sets to the table. Bishop is a defender and dirty work player. Disu is a stretch big with athleticism. Allen is more of a mismatch 4.

Mitchell's post presence will mesh nicely with that trio and give them something they didn't necessarily have previously.

How has Beard reshaped Texas' roster?
Vecenie: Well, in the frontcourt, it'll likely be a completely new group. Kai Jones and Greg Brown have already declared for the draft fully, and I'd be surprised to see Jericho Sims return for a fifth year after he officially got a combine invite on Tuesday.

But here's the thing: Despite losing all of that talent, Texas is still going to have one of the best frontcourts in college basketball next season because of all the work they did in the portal. It's a great mix of talent.

What's UT's outlook for next season?
Vecenie: Honestly, I don't think it's out of the question to place them in the preseason top 10. This is a more complete roster than Beard ever had at Texas Tech.

With guards Andrew Jones, Courtney Ramey and Askew, they should have the ballhandling and perimeter prowess to make plays. That frontcourt is loaded. Really, the only thing they're missing is true wing depth.

If you're a believer — like me — that Beard is one of the truly great coaches in college hoops, there is every reason to buy into this roster being on the shortlist of teams best poised to make a Final Four run.

Gerry lol

Spoiler

And this is why Chris Beard left Texas Tech for Texas.

This just wasn't possible at Texas Tech from a recruiting standpoint.

Posted this or IT, but I think next year’s tournament has Ft. Worth as a 1st weekend site and San Antonio for the S16.

This is a top 5 team in terms of talent, depth, experience, and coaching.  Probably the deepest basketball team Texas has ever had.  There’s no TJ Ford, LaMarcus Aldridge, or Kevin Durant on this team, but there’s probably 8 dudes who have a very real chance to play in the NBA.  Unreal job by Beard out of the gate.

There are no remaining needs, but there’s still 1 or 2 scholarships left.  Wouldn’t mind seeing Beard take on a development project who wouldn’t mind riding pine for a year, and/or an experienced PG who wouldn’t demand a ton of PT.

It seems funny to say, but Texas has never had this quality of players with so much experience.  Barnes teams always seemed to have a player(s) leave a year early while other programs like Kansas, UNC kept their players a year longer.

Senior guards: Ramey, Jones, Febres.

Sophomore guard: Askew

Senior forwards: Allen, Bishop

Junior forwards: Disu, Mitchell

Junior and Senior scrapper: Cunningham, Benson

Freshman wing: Tyson

The Longhorns were super deep and experienced heading into the 2020-21 season. The difference, of course, is they were led by a motivational speaker rather than an actual basketball coach.

Slightly disagree on super deep with experience.  Started a freshman forward. Sixth man was a soph (a phenominal soph). Top nine players were five junior/seniors, three sophs and one freshman. No argument that the team was poorly coached.

This years team will have seven of top eight players being a junior or senior.

1st Team: Allen, Mitchell

2nd Team: Jones

3rd Team: Ramey

Scholar/Athlete of the Year: Disu

Well, if the rumors are true it sounds like Texas is right in the mix for another very talented guard.

Disagree all you want, but it's a stupidly revisionist take.

Having a P5 school in this era roll out a team with as much experience as last year's squad is very rare.

The freshman who started was a one-and-done and is a likely NBA first-round pick. He averaged the least minutes per game of any starter and also did not end the season starting. The sophomore sixth-man played significant minutes as a freshman and is a likely NBA lottery pick.

Coleman, Jones, and Sims were four-year starters. Ramey a three-year starter. Febres was a four-year starter/backup. Hamm was a four-year backup. Liddell and Hepa had three years under their belt.

By anyone's standard, it was an extremely deep and experienced group of players, most of whom had been playing together for years.

The team Beard is assembling will have more letters, but most will be playing together for the first time ever. Even so, we have every reason to be optimistic because of who is now in charge.

Edited to add Febres.

Adding Marcus Carr to this roster would put it in historic territory.

Carr/Askew/Febres

Jones/Ramey/Perryman

Allen/Tyson/Benson

Bishop/Cunningham

Disu/Mitchell

Only concern then is can Beard manage the chemistry when a guy like Askew or Mitchell is coming off the bench or when a guy like Febres or Tyson is only getting 5-10 min per game.

Every scholarship player from the previous season returned. Experience was constantly brought up as a team strength.

I don't have a Kenpom subscription. I think he does an "experience" stat. Maybe someone can share it. I thought I remembered hearing we were one of most experienced teams in the tourney.
