Eduardo Perez just said that JD Martinez was last right handed batter to wear 28 for the Astros when Jones was batting.

Wut

First of all we have had numerous dudes wear 28 since JD was here and 2nd he never wore 28 for us (unless it was prior to him making the big league team)

Right when 'Tuve hit his first Inning bomb, I mumble, "Fuck you Trevor."  Wife is like, "WTF is that all about?"

Enjoyed Smiley working his ass off and holding serve.

Astros showed a pulse tonight.  I thought last night was unacceptable, but tonight was a big answer to the Dodgers.

Is there a place to find Statcast numbers as fast as the broadcaster do? Website or Twitter or some such?

More videos of that ugliness. That Dodger scumbag doesn't fuck around and the other guy's face found out but beating the shit out of another fan at a damn baseball game in front of your crying toddler is absolutely revolting. Good trip to Houston, enjoy the Harris County jail for the night.

Kaplan in the Athletic today on the Astros pitching situation

A pitching staff in flux: Where the Astros stand after a flurry of roster decisions, and with more to come

While they’ve been relatively fortunate health-wise with their position players, the Astros have run through a lot of pitching in the first 49 games of the season. If it feels like someone is always coming or going from their rotation and bullpen, that’s because it’s pretty much the case. Nineteen pitchers have made at least one appearance, and Framber Valdez and Ralph Garza are about to be Nos. 20 and 21.

Wednesday was probably the busiest day yet in terms of Astros pitcher news, with Lance McCullers Jr.’s placement on the 10-day injured list with a sore pitching shoulder being the biggest development. Garza, a 27-year-old righty and former 26th-round draft pick who throws out of two different arm slots, took McCullers’ place on the active, 26-man roster and joined the beleaguered Houston bullpen.

Confused about where things stand with the pitching staff? Let’s run through all of the moving parts after Wednesday.

• The Astros believe McCullers’ absence will be short. When speaking to the media Wednesday, manager Dusty Baker portrayed the pitcher’s IL placement as a precaution more than anything. McCullers’ IL stint is retroactive to Sunday, so he will first be eligible to be activated on Wednesday. He last pitched on Saturday, when he needed 40 pitches to get through the first inning against the Rangers and grinded through five innings of three-run ball. He’s been arguably the Astros’ best starter this season with a 2.96 ERA and .598 opponent OPS in 51 2/3 innings.

“We’re just erring on the side of caution. With (the season) going from 60 games to 162, we felt like it was better to let him skip a start,” Astros general manager James Click said Wednesday. “We’re going to reassess in a day or two and see where he’s at. At this point in the season, these guys have actually pitched almost as long as they did all of last year. So we’re just very cognizant of that workload and making sure that we manage it and err on the side of caution.”

• McCullers’ absence leaves the Astros with a rotation of Valdez, Jake Odorizzi, Zack Greinke and Luis Garcia. Valdez will make his season debut in Friday night’s series opener against the Padres, Odorizzi will make his first start in a month on Saturday and Greinke will start Sunday. Cristian Javier is being moved from the rotation to the bullpen; he’s expected to be available in relief beginning Friday.

• Baker acknowledged the timeline for Valdez was accelerated by the issue with McCullers, whose next start would’ve been Friday. Valdez, who fractured the ring finger on his pitching hand in his first spring training start on March 2, made only two minor-league rehab starts with Triple-A Sugar Land. In his last, on Sunday night, he built up to four innings and 54 pitches. The natural progression would be about five innings and 70-80 pitches in his next outing.

“He says he’s ready. They say he’s ready down there,” Baker said. “It will be good to get him back.”

Odorizzi, who’s coming off a right pronator muscle strain, is more built up than Valdez, as he went 4 2/3 innings and threw 77 pitches Monday in his second and final rehab start with Triple-A Sugar Land. There will still be an element of building up on the fly, though, like there will be for Valdez. Had the Astros not brought the pitchers back for the Padres series, they would’ve had to fill Friday’s start some other way and keep Javier in the rotation for another turn. Their bullpen probably couldn’t have afforded it.

“It was a little bit of a conversation about, ‘Do we want them to get fully built up at Triple A before they come back or do we want to kind of take what they can give us at the major-league level now?'” Click said. “We will have a conversation with the trainers and the pitching coaches before the game on Friday to determine exactly how far they can go, and on Saturday for Odorizzi, obviously. But hopefully once they get through these starts, if they get through them healthy and feeling good, that at that point they’ll be fully ready to go.”

• José Urquidy could rejoin the rotation as soon as Monday, when the Astros open a four-game series against the Red Sox, after his 3 2/3-inning, 63-pitch tuneup with Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday night. Urquidy has been out since May 12 with a minor shoulder issue. If he does pitch Monday, it would push Garcia to Tuesday. Garcia’s rotation spot is safe until McCullers returns. At that point, the Astros must decide whether to put Garcia in the bullpen or option him to Triple A, where he could stay stretched out as starter insurance.

• The bullpen includes Ryan Pressly, Brooks Raley, Ryne Stanek, Bryan Abreu, Brandon Bielak, Andre Scrubb, Joe Smith, Enoli Paredes and Garza. Kent Emanuel is still on the active roster but was being evaluated by a doctor Wednesday after exiting Tuesday’s relief outing because of an elbow issue. The Astros will have to make a roster move to activate Valdez on Friday, so placing Emanuel on the 10-day IL on that day seems like the likeliest outcome. They will also have to make a move Saturday to activate Odorizzi. Paredes has struggled to the point that a demotion to Triple A would be more than warranted.

Blake Taylor is one outing into a minor-league rehab assignment and should return from his sprained ankle soon, which would mean another player being demoted to Triple A. Josh James, who’s coming off October hip surgery, is nearing the start of a minor-league rehab assignment and is expected to be back with the Astros in June. To clear a 40-man roster spot for Garza on Wednesday, the Astros transferred James from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL. However, all that means is that James won’t be back before Monday, as the 60-day clock is retroactive to when he was first placed on the IL at the start of the season.

• Because Garza wasn’t on the 40-man roster before Wednesday, it was interesting that the Astros chose him over 40-man roster options Peter Solomon, Tyler Ivey and Nivaldo Rodríguez. Essentially, they prioritized Solomon’s and Ivey’s progression as starters in Triple A over any short-term work in the major-league bullpen, and Rodríguez threw 57 pitches Tuesday night and wouldn’t have been available to pitch Wednesday. The Astros also like Garza, who pitching coach Brent Strom praised on a video call with the media at the end of spring training and began his season in Triple A with 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief across three appearances. Garza also now has a memorable first major-league call-up story: He got the call from Triple-A manager Mickey Storey while in the drive-thru line at Whataburger on the way home from Sugar Land’s game on Tuesday.
