uncle mike is a slap/singles hitter. his value is being in a good spot in the lineup like 2nd. yordan should be driving in runs (3-4-5).

Diaz is going to be the starting SS next year, and I am fine with it. At least for the 80 or so games he is healthy. Next year is a big one for Diaz. If he can show he can be an everyday SS again it would go a long way to him getting his likely only "big" FA deal. good year too with all 2022 being the big SS FA year. Of course, the Astros could also find Correa's replacement from the 2022 pool, as they should have a shit ton of money to spend.

Semien or Simmons would probably be on the lower end of the FA SSs that would fit nicely with the club.

Frankly I don't think we are letting Correa walk to go sign Seager or Story.

I don't hate Brantley hitting second. My entire life up until 10 or so years ago it was leadoff guy try to get on (fast dude) and slappy hitting second to get him over, hit behind the runner if he steals, have a competitive AB.  In a sense, uncle Mike is the pinnacle of what a 2 hole hitter was back in the day- the best ever version. I like the modern approach a little better of hitting your best guy 2nd and having a guy in the 9th spot that's a second leadoff guy to turn the lineup over, along with the leadoff guy being someone who can hurt you with some power.

I don't expect Dusty to do that. I will honestly just be happy if all the right names are put in the lineup- I don't care all that much where they hit- but with this many qualify lefties I would alternate 1-6 RLRLRL- that would be non-negotiable- and when Castro hits he hits 8th for sure so you go all the way down the lineup.

We like Meyers as starting CF more or Chaz?

I like Meyers more. He's a natural CF and I think his hit tool is better than McCormick. The ball explodes off Meyer's bat. It is a good problem to have though.

Agree with both. I’m a little worried he gets chewed up by better pitching in the playoffs though but Chaz has some swing and miss to him too.

I actually meant Brant, didn't realize Yuli had taken him over.  I just like Brantley setting the table that 3-4-5 brings.  Either way, Uncle Mike is sitting today

I figured that was the case. I too was pretty surprised when I saw Yuli had overtaken him for the team lead.

I'm definitely in the Meyers over Chas camp. I think he has more upside, especially long term. I think both will be overmatched in the playoffs, but Jake will do better. Plus, him getting the experience will have a big payoff in the future. Chas will have a role, but should not start.

Chas role should be hitting for Maldonado any time we are behind in the playoffs in the 5th inning or later.  Playoff roster should have 3 catchers.  Maldonado starts- he gets pinch hit for in the 5th or later by Chaz and in the 7th or later by Diaz (if we are trailing). If it's a big situation in the 5th then flip it and do Diaz and then Chaz.  I guess that means if we are behind in the 7th or 8th still then Stubbs finishes out the game- but I'd rather take the chance at catching lightning in a bottle while we are trailing with our catcher spot than keeping top quality defense behind the plate.

There are no other guys you would ever pinch hit for in the playoffs, or platoon, than our catchers. That means the bench is strictly for PH or PR and the guys who then have to act as defensive replacements. Truly, I don't see anyone that we should ever take out for PR purposes.

So, my playoff roster is starting 9, 2 catchers as defensive replacements, 2 PH for the catchers and 13 pitchers.  I'm going to be low key pissed if we don't have 3 catchers on this roster.  I don't think you need anything beyond that as a position player unless you just want to carry one- break glass in case of emergency guy that just sits there on the bench all game in the event someone gets hurt.  This starting 9 has literally zero weaknesses. I can't even imagine how I'd feel about it if George was still here.

We need 8 arms- and should never go beyond that unless disaster/extra innings strikes:  Framber, LMJ, Greinke, Urquidy, Garcia, Javier, Graveman, Pressley.  That's it. Nobody else should need to see the bump absent extras.  That's 4 starters, 2 swing men and then an 8th and a 9th inning guy.  Obviously you roster 5 more so that seems like Stanek, Garcia, Maton, Taylor and Odo in case we get to extras and need someone to pitch 4, 5 or 6 innings.  But yeah, I don't want to see any of the last 5 guys pitch and we shouldn't have to with 1 or 2 off days in every series.  If the game gets really away from you then Stanek-Taylor can eat it and you figure lets come back tomorrow.

From the Athletic (I didn't realize this was this extreme this year)

Brantley’s performance has dropped off in August, and while he’s crushed righties this season, he’s quietly been bad against lefties. Entering Tuesday, he had a .941 OPS against righties (279 plate appearances) and a .615 OPS against lefties (159 plate appearances). McCormick hasn’t crushed lefties this season like he did in the minors — he actually has a better OPS against righties (.817 to .718) — but he’s still a good option to start against them.

Very little of that article was directed at Correa's situation. It was mostly a vehicle to keep referring to the Astros as cheaters.

This is all even more fun when you realize the Athletic hasn't written about the Angels murdering Skaggs in over a year.

Yeah- Diaz is made of glass and Bregman would go from a well above average 3b to a shitty shortstop, and there's a ton of talented SS available in free agency so it'd be pointless to do that.  You have to sign someone good to at least 4 years to keep this window open where we should be world series contenders for basically the entirety of LMJ's deal while the other starters are all under club control.

Also- Diaz deal is up after 2022, so I imagine that's his last year here.

Bregman started 59 games at SS in 2019 while Correa was out and he was far from "shitty". I get the point though that he would go from a borderline gold glove fielder at 3b to a slightly above average SS.

i think the issue is whether bregman to ss weakens two positions defensively while keeping him at 3rd likely only weakens one.

i hear you, but i think you can hide brantley at 2, but his shortcomings become more glaring at 5-6 (i also don't see him as a rbi guy).  with him at 2, it lengthens the lineup.

Makes sense. My main point was I think we already have our left side of the infield to start next season on the team in Breg and Diaz.

Nothing about Bregman says slightly above average SS to me.  I guess we could go to the metrics, but I think they are pretty unanimous as saying - don't depend on these without at least 1 entire full season of data.  He doesn't have a ton of range, he doesn't have a great arm, and he's not super quick/fluid.  He's got really good reflexes and instincts and can barehand the balls and make decent throws from odd angles on the run.  That just screams 3b to me and not SS.

Look- he's not going to be Derek Jeter bad but it just makes more sense to get one of the 5 or 6 guys that hit well and play the position better than him.

I think they sign a SS and keep Diaz in the utility role. Assuming Crane is feeling good about the future, they’re going to have money to spend and a good crop of free agents at short

I'm not convinced that they will spend the money to sign any of the premier FA shortstops in the offseason based on what we've done recently and the lack of interest in re-signing Correa.

While I agree completely with the sentiment the reason is that you can sign Simien for 4 years $100 million or something like that and Correa will get 10 years and $250+ from someone (I'm betting he gets over $300 million total).  Maybe it's 5/125 or maybe it's 5/150.  All those deals run through this competitive world series window and then end.  Yes, I'd rather pay correa but with Greinke, JV and Correa coming off the books and nowhere else we have to spend money it would be a real kick in the dick if Crane decided to run fucking Diaz out there as the every day short stop.

You can't count on Diaz as an everyday player unfortunately.  He will get hurt early and often and then you will be scrambling at the beginning of the season to find a replacement.
