After getting one of the most team friendly deals of the past decade you can't find common ground with Rizzo on an extension. The one guy who has backed this franchise since they were crap back in 2012.

Little by little the Ricketts have been killing my fandom since 2016. I feel sorry for David Ross,  he gets a shot to manage a big league team and one more season he'll have a high AAA roster on his hands, and then obviously the scapegoat when the team fails. KB, Javy and Rizzo all on their last year with no movement to sign.

Maybe they have a ten year plan in place and part of it is a slow death, I don't know...

Fucking Baez will never learn not to swing at pitches in the dirt.  Why teams ever throw him a fastball is beyond me.  Steady diet of curves and offspeed sliders is all it takes.

we were crushing the ball today. it was very nice to watch for a change.

Well, that well has dried up.  Shut out in 3 of the last 4.  A grand total of 7 hits in the last two games, losing by a combined 15-0.  Pathetic.

Cubs had no business winning the nightcap.  They had runners in scoring position all night and couldn't do anything . . . until extras.  Drives me nuts.

What kind of jabroni takes strike three in a bases loaded situation not once, but twice during a game?  A:  The Kris Bryant kind.

Gotta hand it to 'em, they fought, scratched and clawed those last two games.  Nice to sweep the defending champs.  Maybe this will serve as a catalyst for the rest of the season.

If they can do anything this season it is to scratch and claw like they learned the last 6 seasons. Keep Darvish on this team and they can easily content for the division. Maybe they still can, but it will take a lot more luck. Still it was a fun 2 days.

The Cubs made a change at their backup catcher spot today, selecting P.J. Higgins from Triple-A and designating veteran Tony Wolters for assignment.

Higgins joined the Cubs as a 12th-round pick in 2015, and he hasn’t yet played in the majors. The 28-year-old has batted .273/.359/.370 with 21 home runs in 2,014 minor league plate appearances. He’ll take over as the Cubs’ backup catcher behind Willson Contreras.

Wolters, 28, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in March. The former Rockie opened this season with a .125/.276/.125 line in 30 trips to the plate before the Cubs designated him. He’s a lifetime .236/.322/.315 batter with seven HRs in 1,262 PA in the bigs.

only SD has a better record in May, and that will change if they lose to Milwaukee (currently tied heading into the 10th).

Rizz with a homer in a 14-pitch AB -- had Wrigley absolutely rocking.  Bill Murray doing the 7th inning stretch.  Wish I could have been there.

Overcame a 5-1 deficit to beat the dirty birds.  Keep finding a way, boys.

we all knew that Ben Zobrist's cheating whore of a wife was the reason he ended up prematurely retiring- turns out she was banging Zobrist's pastor, who was also counseling the couple. Zobrist is now suing the guy for $6M.

Backup C carousel continues.

The Cubs announced they’ve signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year, major league contract. Fellow backstop Taylor Gushue has been designated for assignment to create space on the active and 40-man rosters.

Chirinos signed a minor league deal with the Yankees over the offseason. A Spring Training hit by pitch led to a right wrist fracture that required surgical repair, helping limit the 37-year-old to 45 plate appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. New York, set behind the plate with a combination of Gary Sánchez and Kyle Higashioka, released Chirinos on Sunday.

It only took the veteran a day to land a big league opportunity elsewhere. He’ll immediately step in as Willson Contreras’s backup in Chicago, a role that has been in flux all season. In addition to Gushue, Tony Wolters, Austin Romine, José Lobatón and P.J. Higgins have all taken brief turns as the Cubs #2 catcher. Wolters struggled and was quickly designated for assignment, while each of Romine, Lobatón and Higgins has suffered some form of significant injury.

That turnover will lead to another opportunity for Chirinos. The MDR Sports Management client has seen action in parts of nine big league seasons, including every year from 2013-20. At his best, he was an above-average hitter with solid power from the right-handed batters box, serving as the primary catcher for the Rangers and Astros. Chirinos is coming off a disappointing 2020 campaign, but that only spanned 82 plate appearances and he’s not far removed from a strong .238/.347/.443 line with Houston in 2019. He’s returning to his original organization, having signed with the Cubs as an amateur from Venezuela back in 2000.

Chicago will have a week to trade Gushue or expose him to waivers. The Cubs selected the 27-year-old after Lobatón’s injury last week. He has since made his first two career major league appearances, going hitless in four trips to the plate. Signed to a minor league deal over the winter, the former Nationals prospect has hit a solid .272/.328/.440 with Triple-A Iowa this season.

Nice little day at the park yesterday. 72° and sunny. Epic cupsnake sighting.

I hadn’t been in awhile, and I think it sucks that those huge HD screens block some of the rooftops, but the screens are pretty nice.
