Afraid to face Beard, obviously.

Afraid to keep facing Texas.  Ole Roy's record against Texas is.... not great.

I swear I was gonna write that he saw we hired Beard and he said "Nope, I'm done. No more butt fucking by another Texas coach." I erased it lol

If they’re going to keep it in the family, I’d go with Stackhouse.

I hope they do this, just because I'm not bought into the idea that these long-term NBA guys can successfully run college programs.

Let's not forget that Beard signed with UNLV and then left to coach for Tech just days later.  (just kidding, no way that happens here)

He could try to squeeze a few more bucks out of cdc, but that’d be an asshole thing to do

You have to admit, our rooting interest aside, it would be fucking hilarious to everyone else if he did bounce on us and go to UNC

They're a big "keep it in the family" school (same as Duke).

Ummm, Duke has had the same corch for the last 40+ years, and he played and coached at West Point before he took the job.

North Carolina’s “keep it within the family” has actually worked out for them since Dean Smith. Some people forget Dean’s successor, Bill Guthridge, who seemed like a snooze hire, but made two Final Fours in his three seasons and was coach of the year in 1998. Yeah, you can argue that was largely with Dean Smith’s players, and I think he “retired” after reaching the Final Four in his last year to make way for Roy Williams, but it still wasn’t a bad hire.

Matt Dougherty came in between Guthridge and Williams.

Gonna miss the tears from Roy every March UNC gets eliminated.

Yep.  Never was a Roy fan.  The asshole factor was fucking high with him, in an industry full of em.

If they hire Stackhouse, they will reach a level of inbreeding even aggy can't comprehend.

Thats because Stackhouse isn't a sheep.

right but he said Guthridge stepped down to make way for Williams, which is accurate to some degree because everyone associated with Carolina thought Williams would take the job at that point

Just browsing the UNC boards and they're even more delusional than us, maybe for good reason. Few, Wright, and Stevens are reasonable candidates to them.

That's doubtful. UNC actually has a history of winning national titles in basketball.  It's in the top 3 or 5 coaching positions just about anywhere in sports college or professional.

Yeah, despite what they may have said publicly at the time, Guthridge getting the job was always meant to be both a “gold watch” for his years of service under Dean, and a way of keeping the seat warm for when Roy eventually came back home.  Roy dragged his feet leaving Kansas, and their plan B of Doherty was a failure.

Agreed. Just a tad too much on the smarmy side for me. Starting with the hissy fit he threw when at KU and someone asked him about the UNC job...you know, 3 days before he took it.

You must mean the one where he made a big production about saying "shit" on live national TV after all that time and effort put into saying things like "shoot" and "darn" and "dang ol" and all the other folksy trappings and bullshit he waved around like the world's most conspicuously pious bumpkin.

Definitely. And the way John Feinstein tells it, Guthridge really didn't like the reaction he got from the fan base, which hastened his departure. Like he was surprised by the criticism he got in years two and three. Who knows, Feinstein's stories waver here and there.

There was a point, as brief as it was, I felt bad for him when he was choking it up big time at KU, sort of like I did once for K and Beoheim.  But then they became so full of themselves.  That '97 KU team was damn good though, probably should've won it all then.

IIRC, Dean retired rather late in the off season, so Gut was probably the right call.  But your point stands.

The UNC way... hire from within so there is no questions that the new coach understands what is going on regarding the system of activities they have in place to “enhance” recruiting and student “success”.

Somebody has to tell the players which no-show classes to enroll in.
