DACA, immigration reform whatever

It must be rough for a former card carrying republican to try to ingratiate themselves to the D party without actually putting off any progressives.  Or maybe not. Sorry that you don't understand why nothing really ever fucking changes.

Zero apologies for being relatively centrist. Especially when that now puts me well on the progressive end of the scale in this country.

I understand why nothing changes. Perhaps you’re unfamiliar with my work around here.

Taxes.

Immigrants don't have much effect on federal taxes.  They aren't eligible for Social Security or Medicare.  Some do join the military so there's that, but they don't increase the requirements for ongoing wars, F-35s, or aircraft carriers.

My point was being undocumented doesn’t do anyone any good. Need a way to protect them with the benefits of being a citizen, while they pay for that benefit like everyone who was born/legally immigrated here.  I’m sure the 25% or whatever pop will sting, but that’s what we do here.  Citizens pay taxes. As for the wars and F35’s that’s great, but there is strain locally in the schools that doesn’t have fuck all to do with the Fed.  State is looking for same blood from the turnip as the fed.

Agree with all of this. Get them in the system and on the grid. That will never happen, because the GQP will block it, and if they think that their ability to block it may go away, they’ll try to violently overthrow the government again. Hatred of the other is too central to an entire political party for anything positive to ever happen.

In striking down the administration’s ability to expel families under Title 42, Judge Sullivan allowed the Biden administration a 14-day stay to prepare for the ruling to take effect. The administration has responded by ramping up its expulsion of Haitians seeking asylum at the Souther Border, sending them back to the earthquake-ravaged island nation whose president was assassinated this summer. “They’re cynically using the 14-day stay to expel as many Haitians as possible,” Hamptons says. “It’s just so calculated.”

I would not hold anyone to just 6 months. I would say 6-11 months. How would you approach bringing family in? That is a massive burden on both sides of the border. In Central America it is not rare to have an "aunt" raising all the kids. The rest of the parents are here working. What this has done is broken strong family structure, and in part leading to the rise of the mara's. It is a generation of Ni-Ni's. Ni estudian, Ni Trabajan (either study nor work). They live on remissions and have no incentive to do much with their lives.

I would scale it. By year 5 you would be eligible to bring spouse and kids. Your kids... DNA test out front would prove that.

I would also set up asylum centers in parts of Mexico and Central America. You qualify you get to come on up. You don't, well you get sent back.

this whole "we want open borders" is so fucking dumb. Again, speaking as a formerly undocumented immigrant, and having conversations with my group, no one supports this shit.

contrary to what most of the racists would have you believe, the vast majority of Mexicans would rather live in Mexico than to have to move to an entire new country where they don't understand the language, don't have their food, leave their families behind, etc. The vast majority of my extended family still lives in Mexico and would never even consider moving to the US, much less illegally.

My family did not immigrate because they were refugees or fleeing from natural disasters or war. It was an economic situation and the hope for a better life (like the mast majority of Europeans who immigrated to this country).

A good first step would be to create a temporary worker's program. You're given a SS number and pay into FICA, SS, and Medicare, and can work a maximum of 6 months in the country. You're allowed to travel back and forth to visit your family in Mexico / Central America whatever. You must stay out of legal trouble or your pass is revoked. Said worker contributes to our economy, paying taxes, and sends money back to his family. THen lives the other 6 months in his own country. After 10 years, you qualify for citizenship along with your immediate family.

For those undocumented folks that have been here 10+ years, put them on a path to citizenship. Ensure they've paid taxes (my parents did so even though they were undocumented), you pay a fine, and get on a path to citizenship.

But no, the GOP and racists would never go for anything so sensible, because it's racism that's driving these policies at its core.

The dirty little secret is that there are a lot of industries that rely on low wage illegal labor to turn a profit. Agriculture, food service, construction, etc. Requiring those companies to pay payroll taxes on those workers would seriously fuck with their P&L. Maybe not construction as much, but restaurants and ag for sure. They don't want to stop the flow of illegals, they just want to grandstand about it and get the rubes all frothed up. If they were serious about it, just fine a company $1M PER UNDOCUMENTED WORKER. But they would rather frog march a bunch of poor Honduranians in front of the news cameras knowing there will be 100 more working those jobs Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Jose Andres continuing to be a badass.

At the US-Mexico border, thousands of asylum seekers – primarily Haitian – crossed the Rio Grande and are now sheltering under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. What started as a few hundred people quickly turned to nearly 16,000, including many young children.

WCK arrived on site Friday to see how we could best support people in need. Beginning over the weekend, our team started partnering with local restaurants to ensure meals were available immediately. Yesterday, a local restaurant that is part of the Koko’s Restaurant family prepared thousands of plates of chicken, rice, and fresh vegetables. Koko’s Restaurant in McAllen, Texas is a longtime partner to WCK, preparing and delivering meals to migrant and refugee families along the border over the past year.

WCK's Nate shares a glimpse of our relief response in Del Rio.

Working with various government agencies near where the camp was established, the WCK Relief Team is now coordinating and managing service of both lunch and dinner each day, along with passing out water. Beginning today, our Relief Food Trucks are in Del Rio cooking up thousands of servings of hot pasta bolognese. And because there are so many families with young children, we are distributing diapers and baby food.

As families make their way through the asylum process, the number of people in the camp is decreasing. Still, the WCK team is serving close to 15,000 nourishing meals each day and will be here as long as we are needed. Are they any Progressives with actual power?

I remember being surprised about this a couple of years ago because I was under the assumption that the DSA would have opposed a move towards Open Borders in order to protect American Labor. I believe it was the reason Bernie was never big on immigration up until recently.

I understand the term is loaded and Democrats want to run from the term because they are scared of Republicans. I hate that we will never even have a minor reform in immigration policy because one side uses it as a boogie man. Any major reform is as likely to happen as open borders because one side let's the other dictate the game plan.

Well, that and Cubans are fleeing a commanis' regime, yknow, sOciAlIsM, while Haitians are fleeing a regime the GQP would like to emulate.

And, of course, Cubans are light brown, at "worst," while Haitians are, well  . . . .

Might be interesting to see how Afro Cubans are treated for asylum purposes.

a more rational visa program and more humanitarian refugee regime isn't open borders.  it's more open, but not open.  kinda like how higher speed rail isn't high speed rail.

the border is a border for 3 things: goods, capital, and people.  guess which one is the most restricted?

Suggesting that there are not progressive groups advocating open borders is an interesting angle.  And I suppose that there is also no ongoing tension between the progressive wing and the Democrats right of them on immigration or a variety of other topics either. Crazy for anyone to suggest otherwise, I know.

You quoted and responded to this: At least as long as they suppress the progressive wing.

You don't think that that dynamic is in play at all?

Let's be honest. Progressives have been political serfs to the establishment Democratic party. They are growing in power and organization of course. So we'll see how long they continue to take getting shit on.

He said with actual power.  That is not the DSA.  I don't really care what DSA/Justice Dems/Sunshine Movement think because they don't know how to play politics.  They can win local seats or Congressional seats that are D+30-50, but they'll never be players in swing districts that you need to build a coalition.

i know your particular brainworm is that bernie was fucked out of the 2016 nom by the establishment dems (despite the fact that he yet again demonstrated that he can't connect with little old black ladies who go to church with flowery hats on every sunday). but even if that were the case do you think that cantankerous old fart bent his policy position to appease them?

Obama ended wet foot/dry foot nearly a decade ago…  so not really sure what this tweet is about.  Why try to pit immigrant BIPoC against immigrant BIPoCs for your own political gain.  People are starving. We need to help.

Interesting article about the use of social media in the trek to the US border. Just putting it here since there were questions about how they all ended up in Del Rio. I personally think it was a plot by Geraldo Rivera and the reverse vampires.

A bit of a shit show. Leaks from the White House is that the guy is an asshole and isn't really resigning over humanitarian concerns.

Quote

"I will not be associated with the United States inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti, a country where American officials are confined to secure compounds because of the danger posed
by armed gangs in control of daily life," Foote wrote in his resignation letter. "Our policy approach to Haïti remains deeply flawed, and my recommendations have been ignored and dismissed, when not edited to project a narrative different from my own."
