Cops pepper spray and beat uniformed Black army officer over routine traffic stop.

Did anyone else hear the dispatcher say it was a felony traffic stop? Why is a traffic stop a felony?

Classic case of pussy cops freaking out over their authority not being followed. There are a ton of good cops out there who are good at calm De escalation. I’ve seen many videos of them dealing with crazy sovereign citizen types. This guy was stopped and he didn’t know why, and he was asking for a explanation, especially after they asked him to get out of the car, which is extremely unusual for a traffic stop, and considering the national story of cops murdering blacks, I think that would make him reasonable scared to not want to do that. So instead of taking that in consideration, the pussy cop had to freak out and power trip.

Yes.  The cops clearly wanted to escalate the traffic stop.  They wanted pull out their guns.

And, I think, the purported justification for calling this a "felony" stop, was that the uppity black man deigned to not pull over immediately, instead driving to a well lit area to pull over.

The cops even admitted that 80% of the time someone drives to a well lit area it's a minority. So they're used to that, and chose to take it personally. Definitely had nothing to do with being black though /s

Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to hit your hazards if you’re getting pulled over. At least you’re acknowledging the cops are behind you and you’re going to drive to a parking lot or under lights for everybody’s safety.

Pepper spray someone directly to the face who’s clearly not drugged up or threatening is uncalled for.

No ifs, ands or buts. Every good cop just face palmed the shit out of themselves after watching that

I have also long ago thought the cops need to be disarmed until they can demonstrate they can responsibly use firearms.  Or go back to .38 cal revolvers.    The rush to dominate and control the person is why they keep creating these situations.   What warranted the pulling of a weapon?  What warranted the use of pepper spray?  What warranted pulling the guy over in the first place?  They didn't see his license plate?  Well once they did, they could have calmly walked up to the guy and said so and let him be on his way.   This did nothing to add to the safety of society.

That he was in uniform doesn't matter.  He was a human doing nothing wrong, pulled over, with weapons drawn on him and then sprayed with pepper spray.  What did the pepper spraying do?  What did they think it would do?  Become less afraid?

The officers shouted conflicting orders at Nazario, telling him to put his hands out the window while also telling him to open the door and get out, the lawsuit says. At one point, Gutierrez told Nazario he was “fixin’ to ride the lightning,” a reference to the electric chair which was also a line from the movie “The Green Mile,” a film about a Black man facing execution.

I think that was a reference to the taser.  He switched to it right after he said that.

But fuck those pieces of shit.  Looks like the young cop overreacted and the senior cop was more than willing to go all "Obey my commands".

Cops should be disarmed.

I've obviously never been cop trained, but it seems like they must be trained to behave this way. It's so ubiquitous. Gotta make it back home alive &etc.

Theres an industry of ex-cops giving "warrior training" where they tell cops over and over that their lives are always under danger, and teach them the right words to say and write down to use violence indiscriminately. It gives them that mindset and it's ubiquitous within the police community. It's why cops always keep their hands on their guns when talking to you, so if they can claim that they feel threatened even for a split second they can shoot you and be protected by qualified immunity.

It's all a farce. They're armed gang members acting with impunity, backed by useful idiots that believe cops nomatter what, even though cops routinely lie in police reports and under oath.

They’re taught to come over the top, meaning that if somebody acts up their idea is to be bombastic and go over the top verbally or with violence/tasing etc.  It’s funny that doctors and nurses deal with many of these same people but when all you have is training on how to de-escalate, that’s what you do.  We can slowly improve things but if we wanted a real fix you truly need to fire everyone and hire community liaison type cops.  Not the small dick tough guys that make up 75% of today’s cops.

I quoted this especially for the last remark post comma. I am at the point to where I assume the cop is lying automatically. If I were to be called for jury duty, a police officer’s sworn statement would hold less value than the accused’s statement.

I know I am not alone, I want to believe the police. I want them to be a force for stability. I also cannot understand how we accept a lower threshold for the employment of deadly force by our police than our military in a foreign nation.

It is also fucked up how we expect our citizens to be held to a higher standard.

The entire "Felony Stop" protocol was unwarranted. The reason to stop was sketchy at best. These cops were looking for a fight. Driver could have cooperated better, but if I'm a minority being stopped for no reason and these mofos won't explain why, I'm going to be hypersuspicious. Cops need to quit acting like every traffic stop is in Fallujah and the occupants are Al-Qaida.

I don't think they're trained that way by "government," in the academy.

It's cop culture and the voluntary bullshit.  That "warrior training" crap isn't official training, it's what they tell each other they need to do.  That's about as good an explanation of what's wrong with cop culture as anything.

There are no good cops there's just cops. The so called "good" cops simply shrugged their shoulders and justified the actions of these jackasses. If these were teacher's we'd get the rights favorite talking point of blaming unions but they're cops harassing a black man so cop unions are good.

I've been saying for years, they need to take guns away from the street cops. Send them in pairs with OC spray and a taser, save the guns for the goon squad or SWAT team. They'll be a lot more respectful to the citizenry in a short amount of time.

I’ve said the same. Or at least have guns locked in trunk of vehicle for only a select number of cops, and require supervisor to remotely unlock them when given a compelling reason. And put the supervisor on the hook for the actions of the officer.

In the UK, they have a sort of roaming quick-reaction force with sole responsibility to respond to calls from other officers about armed/dangerous situations

One time I got pulled over as I was exiting the highway and came to an abrupt stop on the exit ramp. The exit ramp had a curve and I pulled over into apex of the curve. It was a two lane exit so cars kept flying by. The cop started to get out of his car and I was watching to see if was going to get clipped by a passing car.

Sadly, he never fully got out of his car. He barked at me to drive out of the exit ramp and pull over some where else. I drove slowly into the access road and stopped. Fucker bitched over his speaker to pull over elsewhere.

By the time he finally approached me, I greeted him with "I am so sorry officer, I didn't want you to think I was trying to get away or anything like that. I just didn't know if it was appropriate to keep driving or not." LOL seriously, there really is no right way to do things with cops, they are emotionally weak little bitches with the self control of a child.

Fuck stick cop should have waited until I was clear of the exit ramp before turning on his lights.

The cop yelling about "ride the lightening", just by that utterance, tells us every single thing we need to know about his mentality as a "peace officer'.  A guy like that would never be a trial witness for me.  He would join a few others on my "no fucking way can I put this guy on the stand"list.  Of course with that, those officers' cases go nowhere when assigned to me.

Uh, I know emotions were running high, but if you can't tell the difference between somebody's arm and somebody's collarbone.......you're either the dumbest fucking veteran ever or Derek Chauvin.  Either way, your ass needs to be put down like a sick dog.

Yep, and the dumbass telling the guy to keep his hands o0ut the window and then telling him to undo his seatbelt and get out of the car spoke volumes about what a moron the cop is. Reminded me of this, too ...

The driver came out of it alive. I’d say he cooperated just fine. He had every reason to suspect that the moment he removed his hands from view the frightened cops would’ve shot him dead.

It’s not the “union” part of cop unions that makes them bad, it’s the “cop” part.

The Army utility uniform (can't remember what they call them now, BDUs?) don't have rank insignia on the arm nor the collar.  It's over the sternum, right in the middle, for both officer and  enlisted.  Not that this changes how the cops SHOULD have acted, but the cops couldn't see his rank for the seat belt.

That being said, it doesn't matter the rank nor should it matter that the guy is even serving in the military.  He did everything that he should have done, yet still got sprayed.  I'm not a cop hater by any stretch, but this is just fucked up.  I do find it curious that he just assumes that he's a Specialist.  I can read all sorts of stuff into that.

YouDontKnowMe--------Good catch.  I was going off of traditional uniforms, but the modern utility is over the chest-pit...you're absolutely right (gimme a break, we're a Navy family with a drinking problem).  Obviously something he couldn't have seen while the passenger was still in the seat with buckle on.

You're also right about, "Why would Specialist be the first thing out of his mouth?"  I couldn't tell you within a few years that man's age, but the first thing my brain to assume would not be, "Hey, he looks E-4 and naive, so he probably stole this truck on top of everything else!"  Just by seeing and hearing the guy, you'd have to assume some multiple chevrons going up and down.  You don't want a police officer in your department, who when asked to describe a suspect, answers, "The suspect appeared to be between ages 22 and 52.  It's hard to tell with people that black."

It's not so much the rank assumption as insult, it's to your point---it speaks to the idiocy and mindset of the officer, who himself likely---based on what we know of him---was probably discharged before making Corporal.
