Albion College students said they are demanding change from the administration after recent racist actions were reported on campus.

Some senior students said there had been a racial incident just about every semester and little changed over their four years to make campus feel more inclusive.

More than 450 Albion College students and staff members marched across campus April 5, 2021, to boycott the injustices they said are happening on campus.

“For the past three years we’ve dealt with the same thing, it’s time for something different,” Domonic McDonald, an Albion College junior, said.

Students said in the past month there had been at least three incidents of racial and derogatory slurs written on walls in the residence halls, along with drawings of swastikas.

“You’re nothing but a coward, you have no room here, you’re not welcomed," McDonald said. “I’ll pray for you. You need to be better.”

Students said they didn't think the college administration was taking these injustices seriously.

“We do this because Albion College has polices that take a stance at anti-racism and if they are not upholding those policies, we would like to make sure they are held accountable,” Jayson Sawyer, a senior, said.

He said if they are not heard, a group of students would file a civil rights discriminatory lawsuit, with the help of some Albion College Board of Trustees members.

Sawyer organized the boycott on campus because he said some students didn't feel safe on campus and were asking for more transparency of how these incidents were handled.

In a statement to News Channel 3, the Albion College administration said they stand against racism, hatred and injustice.

“The racist and anti-semitic actions taken on our campus over the last week are cowardly and will not be tolerated,” Albion College President Mathew Johnson said. “In addition to caring for and protecting the students most directly impacted, and addressing the safety concerns of the broader student body, we are currently investigating who is responsible forracist graffiti on our campus.”

One group on campus, Build Albion Fellows, was focused on bridging the gap between the college and the Albion community, which is predominantly white.

“We feel like they brought us here to meet a quota more than they did because they wanted us here,” Akaiia Ridley, a Build Albion Fellows member, said.

Ridley said she had seen change on campus, but more needed to be done.

“I have so much hope that we won’t be doing this again,” she said.

Johnson said the college was offering a $1,000 reward for any information on who is responsible for the recent racist actions on campus. He said they would be seeking criminal charges against those involved.

“If they are Albion College students, they will also immediately be subject to the student conduct process—including the potential for suspension or expulsion,” Johnson said.

While I hate to see this is happening, what exactly should the administration do to stop this?  I would assume that any student caught doing this would be expelled and any random person caught doing this would be subject to vandalism charges.  Other than that, what can be done to stop some random dumbass with a spray can?

um, yeah, about that.

Albion College and the Albion Department of Public Safety say a student is responsible for racist graffiti found in a dorm last weekend.

Albion police brought the 21-year-old Black male in for questioning on April 6, according to Chief Scott Kipp. The student admitted to creating most of the graffiti, and video evidence from Albion’s Campus Safety Department confirms the statements made by the student, Kipp said.

The student was released after questioning, Kipp said. Once the investigation is complete, the information will be submitted to the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office for any charges related to the incident, he said.

The graffiti, which included racist epithets and multiple references to the Klu Klux Klan, was discovered in a stairwell inside Mitchell Towers on Friday, April 2, university officials said.

This seems to make none.

Drives attention to their cause.  They were wronged ya know...

Victimology is largely ignored as a factor in people's POV, but holy furk it drives a lot of this bullshit.  It also detracts from the real stuff.

Of course people of color will be targeted at a place called Albino College.

Head of the Dyslexia Department, Dean Edgar Winter, could not be reached for official comment.

It is really unfortunate that when there is so many examples of legit racism and issues related to race that people do this BS. It is just stupid.

I get the draw attention to the cause or perhaps this person felt his message couldn't be heard otherwise, but this shit always ends up backfiring.

If only there was a high profile criminal case on national television every single day that we could use to draw attention to institutional racism, that in its worst forms, can lead to wrongful deaths.

But oh...a sale on Krylon!

I read that statement in this guy’s voice. It’s exactly the statement and tenor that I imagined would come from a college administrator.

White supremacy is the root of all race-related violence in the US

Jennifer Ho, Professor of Asian American Studies, University of Colorado Boulder

...The point I’ve made through all of those experiences is that anti-Asian racism has the same source as anti-Black racism: white supremacy. So when a Black person attacks an Asian person, the encounter is fueled perhaps by racism, but very specifically by white supremacy. White supremacy does not require a white person to perpetuate it.

It’s not just white people

White supremacy is an ideology, a pattern of values and beliefs that are ingrained in nearly every system and institution in the U.S. It is a belief that to be white is to be human and invested with inalienable universal rights and that to be not-white means you are less than human – a disposable object for others to abuse and misuse.

The dehumanization of Asian people by U.S. society is driven by white supremacy and not by any Black person who may or may not hate Asians...

...White supremacy as the root of racism can be seen in the Latino man in Texas stabbing a Burmese family in March 2020, claiming he did so because they were Chinese and bringing the coronavirus into the U.S. Though the suspect may have mental health problems, his belief that this family posed a threat is driven by the white supremacist ideas of Chinese people being to blame for COVID-19...

...Stories of individual harassment and violence perpetrated against Asian Americans by white assailants don’t always get the same attention as the viral videos of Black aggression toward Asians... (LOL wut?)

...But underlying all these incidents is white supremacy, just as white supremacy is responsible for Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes: White supremacy made Floyd into a Black male threat rather than a human being.

Understanding the depth and reach of this ideology of racism can be challenging, but doing so brings each person, and the nation as a whole, closer to addressing systemic inequity. It’s not Black people whom Asian Americans need to fear. It’s white supremacy....

I think it’s a stretch to say that most of these cases are BS....but I will say my BS meter gets pinged when I hear about mystery racist graffiti at tiny liberal arts colleges or the Ivies or whatever.  It definitely seems like those usually shake out this way.

Fair point re: most, I can agree to many of the ones occurring on college campuses. Not sure if it is just a play for social media fame that drives it but it is sad people feel need to do this.

IMHO, it’s not about attention or clout or anything, it’s that these peoples identities are so intertwined with victimhood and outrage, that they need an event like this to justify their own contempt with others. When there isn’t one, they create one to fill that void.

Whats fascinating is that these people are always complete morons and the truth always comes out.

Sooooo, is Asian on Asian racism in Asia somehow the fault of US white supremacy?

Or is it more that racism is a common human behavioral trait that many people don't bother to suppress and overcome?

If there's a long-standing majority of one ethnicity in a country or region, and another ethnicity finds itself in proximity to that majority, there's gonna be some racism, probably a whole lot of it.

There's nothing extra special about US racism, except that, unlike many or most countries, we had a sizable population of minorities who were also slaves until a certain point.  That's certainly a huge problem, but wouldn't have gone down much differently at that time in any other place in the world.  Just about everyone else had a more gradual introduction of ethnic minorities and in more recent and enlightened times.

How does one “boycott” a nebulous injustice like graffiti? Refuse to buy cans of spray paint? Protest outside Home Depot paint department?

Be like Lebron, make sure it gets cleaned up immediately so no one ever sees it and scrub all your security tapes so it’s almost like it never happened.

The demand for racism outstrips the supply.  That’s why in 2021 bullshit like The Eyes is a big racial issue.

The craziest thing about this story is that there's a college in Albion, MI. It only has 1,475 students and appears to exist inside of one building, but it still counts.   Wait, nope, it's that someone had to fake some racism in that backwoods cesspool of Michigan Militia idiots.  Should be plenty of the real thing floating around.  I assume the kid is just working out some personal issues, not that it excuses the vandalism.

ALBION, MI

Population: 8,324

Median Age: 30.5

Poverty Rate: 28.6%

Median Household Income: $31, 134

Median Property Value: $57,000. (For comparison, Austin Median Property Value is around $500,000.  So there's hope for those who can't afford Austin.  Move to Albion instead.)

LOL wut?  Albion is an entire campus.  They have gyms and uniforms and teams and multiple buildings and everything.

Albion College is a well-respected liberal arts university founded in 1835.  it's in the upper 1/3 of admissions requirements for small private universities (a little below the most difficult major universities to get into).

Also, some of the best private colleges in the country are in small towns.  Two of the most prestigious, Elon N.C. has 9K people, and Dennison in Ohio has 2,600 (town and college name the same).

Also, Albion's city population is 30% African-American, well over the national norm.

I don't think it's the college or town to blame here.  Just perhaps it's the idiot's who posted the fake messages.

I've know more than a few folks from Albion, thanks to extended family by marriage.  I've spent time there, albeit as short a time as I could manage.  I don't even remember seeing the campus beyond one main building, but I believe you.  In spite of the AA population, the town is awash with redneck militia idiots, including the aforementioned extended family.    I didn't mean to imply that the college or town was responsible for this, as they clearly are not.  There aren't a lot of well educated folks populating that town, that's for damn sure.  I assume the students overpaying for their prestigious degrees move on elsewhere where jobs exist.   Albion is a depressing backwater with no opportunities.  There's some pretty county around it, though.  The extended family included a doctor, a nurse, and a police officer.  Doctor and nurse both lost their license, and the police officer went to jail and is no longer a cop.  Even the educated folk in that town seem to struggle with basic functioning.
