Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Murphy’s an interesting prospect. There’s not very much film on him since he wasn’t the starting QB in 2019, and he didn’t get to play in 2020 . He’s big and he has a huge arm, but he’s not actually very good at football right now. His footwork is very sloppy and his throwing motion is long and inconsistent.
If max preps is correct, then he played in 5 games his sophomore year and went 26/58 (45%) 305 yds, 0 TD, 2 INTs.

Having said all that, he’s got the tools. A lot will depend on his work ethic and development. Anyone who’s seen him throw in person the last year will have a much better idea of him as a prospect than any of us trying to watch the limited clips of him playing in 2019 and some more recent 7v7/camp stuff.

What has garnered the 5 star rating then?

They don't just hand out 5th stars... Or maybe they do.

Possesses a ton of raw upside and as high a ceiling as any quarterback in the region, regardless of class. Has lacked ideal production through first two years but
has every tool you could want in an elite quarterback and has shined in multiple off season events. He has plus size and arm strength, is accurate to all three levels of the field, is a smart kid who understands timing and anticipation and when to take a little off his throws. Can already throw the football 70+ down the field but is more then just a big arm, he knows how to play the position. He’s mobile and is comfortable throwing outside the pocket, is a highly competitive kid, a natural leader with a great off the field work ethic. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future high round NFL draft pick.

, imo

Big. Cannon Arm. The Tyrone Swoopes treatment /nokatfid

Not saying Murphy won’t end up a bust, but the Tyrone Swoopes comparison makes me shake my head. Just because both are 6’4 with big arms doesn’t mean they are the same. Swoopes was not even a top 200 player in the country for a reason. Murphy is much more developed at this point that Swoopes, even with his flaws in footwork, etc. As was stated above, they don’t hand out 5 stars for having a strong arm. Sark and co have much more insight and access to film than we see searching on YouTube and Maxpreps. Don’t think Murphy would have 30 offers if he was Tyrone Swoopes.

None of the bolded parts could have been said about Swoopes as a qb in college, let alone a high school junior.

If we’re throwing out comps, he reminds of Joe Flacco. Big arm, long throwing motion, plodding footwork in the pocket. Murphy does look to be better on the move than Flacco, but that’s not saying much.
EJ Manuel might be another one, except Manuel was a better athlete and had a much shorter throwing motion.
