Gerry Hamilton: Bryan Carrington expected to join USC staff

Quote

Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington is expected to take a job at USC. Carrington would like to make a transition to on the field coaching in the future, and USC has a plan in place for him to work as a quality control analyst on the offensive side of the ball, learning under Trojans running backs coach Mike Jinks.

Yeah, Bill’s completely misstating the situation. USC had the #8 class in the country and landed 4 of the top 10 in-state. They’re hiring Carrington because he’s a good recruiter, not because they’re abandoning CA to focus on recruiting Texas.
It was hyperbole on abandoning CA, but vouch for Helton's popularity in state at your peril.

They were very, very close to a disastrous season in a very weak p12. They leveraged that and no HS football into a respectable class this year, but that doesn't make it a trend.

If a couple of those bounces don't go their way, Helton's seat is hotter than Tom Herman's last December and I suspect the recruiting would've trended accordingly.

We'll learn a lot based on whether Helton can keep pulling rabbits out of his hat this year or not. I've seen enough from him to believe he'll revert to his mean of being a sub-Herman level coach, complete with a bunch of Herman's assistants now. I don't believe the 21 season or 22 class will be kind to SC.

and Hullaby and Gbenda, I think... Kinda seems like a lot of depth, Coach Sark

Gbenda really came on late in the season, and Tillman looked like a player before his injuries etc. Hullaby can also be an impact guy there but will need time.

Marshall Malchow started out as a GA at Bama before getting hired by Petersen heading to UW as an asst Director of Player personnel.  He then was hired to the main job at UGA the last few years and now aTm just stole him in January.  I'd say he fits the bill.  Maybe coach Pete has a connection.  Make those peasants squirm and show some interest.  Its not like he's settled in.  Also why would aTm's last guy leave to Baylor?  Just a thought.

Slim shady?

(Justin Wells) Around the Horns: Banks, Brown, Sexton, and a RB note

Spoiler

With 2021 wrapped up, it's time to hit warp speed on the 2022 class. Buckle up.

OL Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek (2022):

As a four-star .98 composite, Banks is one of the most coveted of the in-state linemen. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder holds 22 offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, and OU.

The District 22-6A first team selection at offensive tackle as a sophomore had a solid junior campaign. And he knows exactly what he wants to improve on this offseason.

“My pad level on the run block and strike of hands," said Banks. "I want to bring a person who is able to be coached and dominate in college."

I'm not certain who stands out early for Banks, but he's at least narrowed it down to 14.

“Every school that’s was listed in my Top 14 - Texas, Oregon, Texas A&M, LSU, Utah, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Arkansas, UH, and Arizona State - recruits me a lot, but no more then the other school.”

Texas extended Banks a re-offer last week and it means something to the big tackle.

“The Texas offer meant a lot to me being my dream school." said Banks. "And their message was to start a legacy more than football. Getting Jaydon Blue was a real big pickup for the Horns."

For a position of immense need in Austin, the staff has prioritized the big man from Humble.

OL Jacob Sexton, Deer Creek (Edmond, OK) (2022):

At 6-foot-6, 285 pounds, the Oklahoma native is one of the nation's top offensive lineman for 2022. And despite his roots, he's looking around at programs before making his decision.

He dropped his Top 5 recently - OU, Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, and Texas. He gave me one word on each program that best describes them to Sexton.

"OU - powerful.
Alabama - dominant.
A&M - rising.
OSU - close.
Texas - exciting."

This one has Sooners written all over it, but I love UT's approach. In the past, this is a prospect that previous staff might've shunned due to his Sooners allegiance, but not this group. Sarkisian and crew are going after the best, regardless of status. Kyle Flood did enough at Alabama to grab Sexton's attention. Keeping shooting, Sark.

OLB/DE Derrick Brown, Texas High (2022)

The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder is a sight running the 400 meters in practice. After watching Clayton Smith over the last two years, Brown hopes to pick up where the four-star linebacker left off for the Tigers.

“I want to be the leader Clayton was," said Brown. "I want to get better at setting the edge, and getting to the quarterback."

Brown plays both ways for the Tigers, including tight end. His athleticism allows him to do things others can not. He recorded 67 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, six sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception in 2020. He's added double-digit offers in the last month.

“OU, Ole Miss, and Arkansas recruit me the hardest,” said Brown. "I'd love to hear more from Texas and Texas A&M."

The Longhorns and Aggies remain the only two big schools in-state yet to offer, but both are aware of Brown and are currently evaluating the rising junior.

NOTE on RB recruiting for 2022:

Before the state’s top tailback, Klein Cain’s Jaydon Blue, committed to Texas on Tuesday evening, coach Stan Drayton made a phone call.

He reached out to Tyler Legacy four-star Jamarion Miller. The 5-foot-10.5, 185-pounder from Smith County was assured after Blue’s public pledge, that the staff still wants Miller’s services and he’s still got a spot.

That was nothing short of refreshing for Miller. Texas remains in a good spot with OU, TCU, Florida, and Oklahoma State recruiting him more.

Steve Wiltfong: Jaydon Blue gives Texas another elite running back prospect

Quote

When talking about the top running back in the 2022 class, the first name that comes to mind for me is Houston (Texas) Klein Cain standout Jaydon Blue. The 5-foot-11 1/2, 205-pound newly-minted Texas commit is one of the top at the position regardless of grade. I'm not sure there is many in the 2021 class I’d take over him right now, putting him in a similar class with five-stars from that haul in TreVeyon Henderson and Donovan Edwards. “He’s Reggie Bush 2.0,” said Fast Houston founder Ro Simon who coaches Blue on the 7-on-7 circuit.

Blue’s ability to cut and turn on the after jets makes him different. He’s also physical between the tackles with excellent balance and easy after contact ability, and he erases angles with that 10.7 speed in the 100m dash. Fast, powerful and explosive, Blue has all the traits to come in as a true freshman and ultimately push Bijan Robinson who would be a junior that fall. “I saw it in eighth grade when he joined the program,” Simon said. “When I put him at wide out his freshman year he was running routes as good as any wide receiver, then I watched his freshman tape and he looked exceptionally well at running back.”

Blue has all the intangibles as well. “He has great charisma,” Simon said. “He’s a leader. He checks all the boxes off the field first and foremost. He’s a great teammate. Makes his teammates better. He’s more of a guy that does his talking on the field and his actions speak louder than his words.” Blue rushed for 2,155 yards and 30 touchdowns as a junior, averaging nearly 10 yards per carry. He committed to Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns earlier this week over the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford and Texas A&M.

“I like a lot of things about Texas!” Blue said. “Good environment, great coaches, fans and a lot of other things. They have been the school that have been in touch with me the most since they have offered. I also have a good relationship with a lot of their coaching staff and with Coach Sark moving in I have already built that relationship up and he is a great coach! Texas is a school that I knew would be a good fit for me since they offered and they are just that.”

Blue believes Sarkisian will maximize his potential in Austin. “I think it will be good for me, I am very smart and I catch on fast so it will be fun to see how it goes,” Blue said. “The thing I love about Coach Sark is that he is a great person. He knows how to put running backs and a guy like me in the right position to be successful and to showcase more than just running the ball and that’s what I like most because I can also catch and run routes like a receiver even better so that is a big boost in my game.”

Blue was a big boost to a Texas recruiting class that ranks No. 10 early in the 2022 cycle. “He’s going to bring a whole lot of recruits with him,” Simon said. “He has a big presence in the 2022 class.”

Nahlin and Gerry with a (dare I say) Perroni-esque predictions piece for 2022. Overflowing with Kool-Aid.

Spoiler

The 2021 class is in the rear-view mirror, and now it’s time for Inside Texas to give some thoughts and make some predictions in the class of 2022 after Armani Winfield and Jaydon Blue provided some growing momentum for the new staff.

**- offered by prior staff, and re-offered by Sark staff
*-offered by Sark staff

QUARTERBACK:
**Quinn Ewers, Carroll (Southlake, TX) - OHIO STATE
Ewers is the top QB on the board in Austin. There have been multiple conversations between Steve Sarkisian, A.J. Milwee, Ewers and the Southlake Carroll staff.

GH: The question for me is if Ewers becomes comfortable with decommitting for a second time, and calling Ryan Day, telling him he’s not going to play for him. If the nation's No. 1 ranked prospect can do that, there is little doubt a Texas commitment would make the circle very happy.

EN: It’s hard for me to predict him in the class, but also hard to envision the class without him. I lean toward predicting he’ll be a Horn.

**Cade Klubnik, Westlake (Austin, TX)
Texas is in a better spot for the 6-foot-3, 185-pound dual-threat signal caller than probably given credit for with a spring decision very likely.

GH: If Ewers sticks with Ohio State, it will be mildly surprising if Klubnik is not in Steve Sarkisian’s first full class. Would he be okay being part of a two QB class? That would be the question.

EN: If Ewers doesn’t commit this spring, I think Texas has a good chance to keep Klubnik in Austin. With no Ewers, I’d predict Klubnik.

**Maalik Murphy, Junipero Serra (Gardena, CA)
Texas has re-offered the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder with a live arm and functional athleticism.

GH: Hard to imagine a QB with 61 varsity passes being the lone QB in a first class for Sarkisian at Texas. If Murphy is in the class, expect a two QB class.

EN: Who was the one QB offered before Ewers way back when? Murphy. There are definitely rumblings out west but it’s hard to know what’s real in this recruitment. Texas, the school, has run hot and cold on Murphy a few times.

RUNNING BACK:
*Le’Veon Moss, Istrouma (Baton Rouge, LA)
GH: Despite the LSU offer and push, a source close to Moss says he would like to get away for college. Tuscaloosa is probably far enough. Texas really likes this kid.

EN: Malaise thinks he runs like a maniac but that’s what happens when you combine Le’Veon Bell and Zack Moss. I can’t make a prediction here, but Louisiana has three UT level running backs and LSU is down so maybe there’s a chance with one of them.

**Raleek Brown, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)
EN: Without the ability to make visits, it’s hard to see UT having a chance.

*TreVonte’ Citizen, Lake Charles College Prep (Lake Charles, LA)
GH: Pretty wide-open recruitment early on. All-name team.

**Jamarion Miller, Legacy (Tyler, TX)
Getting Miller and Blue in the same class would make for some speedy backs with excellent hands.

GH: Texas, if he jumps in quickly.

EN: Texas prediction but it assumes they’ll push.

*Zach Evans, Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall, TX)
Stan Drayton is a fan of this kid. But will there be room?

EN: He has a top-three of UT, Notre Dame, and Utah, but numbers might not work out in his favor at RB. We’ll see, it’s a long cycle.

WIDE RECEIVER:
*Caleb Burton, Del Valle (Del Valle, TX) - OHIO STATE
GH: This one seems like an uphill battle, no matter the circumstance.

EN: The only chance for the flip is if Ewers flips first, and even then I’m not sure I’d predict him.

**Kevin Coleman, St. Mary's (St. Louis, MO)
Texas wants speed, speed and more speed at wide receiver.

EN: I’ll spend zero time grieving if I get this wrong, but Texas prediction. I think this recruitment sets up about as well as it can.

*Jordan Hudson, Garland High (Garland, TX) - OKLAHOMA
GH: Hudson’s mom likes the idea of Texas. Hudson has always remained intrigued.

EN: There was a brief time in August where UT had a shot, but that was a long time ago in recruiting years.

**Shazz Preston, St. James (St. James, LA)
One of the nation's elite wide receiver prospects. He goes to school not far from where Ryan Perriloux grew up.

GH: LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss all want Preston. You guys want a prediction?

EN: This is a different St. James than the one you North Houston dwellers are thinking of.

**Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX)
When looking at the Texas WR board, this name is at the top. Alabama and Oregon are working to beat the Longhorns.

GH: Texas until proven wrong.

EN: I’ve already predicted Texas, though his quick declaration his recruitment was over was a tad surprising. Texas prediction.

CJ Williams, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)
EN: I’m not sure he fits what the staff is ultimately looking for, though they’d know better than me.

*Chris Marshall, Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City, TX)
Very high ceiling big receiver due to speed, agility, and body control. And that means Texas A&M, LSU, Oklahoma and many others are in pursuit.

GH: Texas will have a legit chance, but too soon to know how this recruitment will play out.

EN: He does fit what the staff is looking for in a taller receiver. Wide open recruitment and he’s very receptive to UT’s interest.

**Brenen Thompson, Spearman (Spearman, TX)
Instantly became a top priority for Sark when hired. Speed, speed, and speed with arms extended pass catching ability.

GH: Liking Texas chances more and more these days.

EN: When I wrote the critically acclaimed Twin Turbos blurb I had a feeling UT would land both Stewart and Thompson. That feeling left for a while but it has returned. If anyone can sell those two playing together it’s Sarkisian. Texas prediction.

TIGHT END:
*Jason Llewellyn, Aledo (Aledo, TX)
Three-sport 6-foot-5, 242-pounders don’t grow on trees. This was a smart offer by Texas.

GH: Grew up going to TCU football games, as the family had season tickets. With that said, Texas has a legit chance.

EN: Surprisingly early offer. With some family ties to UT it’s hard to not see them landing him.

*Holden Staes, Westminster School (Atlanta, GA) - PENN STATE
Staes has sincere interest in Texas, but IT will leave it there unless he makes a spring or summer student visit.

*Jaleel Skinner, Greer (Greer, SC)
Jeff Banks is an elite recruiter, and would need to be and then some to reel in this South Carolina prospect that has Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and everyone else on him.

OFFENSIVE LINE:
**Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek (Humble, TX)
Banks had UT at the top when the recruiting process began. LSU was trending throughout the season.

GH: Playing for Lifetime Longhorn Kenny Harrison can[t hurt, and the fact that Texas OC/OL coach Kyle Flood is all over the pass pro specialist with an 80-inch wingspan.

EN: This is a hard one. I wouldn’t fault someone predicting him to Texas but I’m not there yet. I need to see him in person soon. The large environment and pomp and circumstance around UT might not be his speed.

**Devon Campbell, Bowie (Arlington, TX)
Campbell will have to turn down his favorite starting the process, and a Jeff Banks/Kyle Flood combination with an inviting offense for any offensive player.

GH: Same pick as Tope Imade, Brandon Foster, Ryan Palmer and Sherrod Harris

EN: Texas prediction.

**Kam Dewberry, Atascocita (Humble, TX)
A tremendous run blocking guard prospect with tackle length and body quickness that is wanted by all the major competition.

GH: Texas was the team to beat in youth league. Now, the competition close to home is surging Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Ohio State is trying to pull him out of the region.

EN: He grew up a UT fan and one of his best friends, Derrick Harris, just signed. Kyle Flood is a hire that helps UT. I can’t predict him to UT yet but it sure wouldn’t surprise me.

Cole Hutson, Frisco (Frisco, TX)
EN: We’re unsure if he’s been re-offered but he was “offered” by Alabama previously. I wonder if Conner Robertson has first dibs because of versatility to play center. Being the hometown kid and Klubnik’s teammate probably doesn’t hurt. Hutson is a player, though.

**Jacob Sexton, Deer Creek (Edmond, OK)
Texas made the top five, along with Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama and Oklahoma State.

GH: If his high school was Deer Park, I would pick Texas.

EN: Info on Sexton varies. Given his last name I expect him to create some excitement in the UT ecosystem then pull the rug out from under you and commit to OU.

**Neto Umeozulu, Allen (Allen, TX)
Texas covets the devastating run blocker with an ideal wingspan, body quickness and bend to be a plus in pass pro.

GH: The Longhorns need to win a big recruitment at the school that has produced Kyler Murray, Greg Little, Cedric Ogbuehi and Bobby EVANS, among others.

EN: I have no feel for this one but he’s one of the biggest must-gets in the class. UT has done poorly at Allen to say the least.

*Zach Rice, Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA)
Blue chip recruits from the state of Virginia are leaving at a high rate. They normally head to Ohio State, North Carolina, Clemson, Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama, Florida and Florida State.

*Gunner Givens, Lord Botetourt (Daleville, VA)
How would you like to be the Virginia Tech staff having to fight off Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame and Georgia for a premium position prospect?

*Jacob Allen, Hun School (Princeton, NJ)
This is a recruitment that Texas should absolutely hang in there on, but that’s not a prediction that the 6-foot-6, 275-pounder will end up in Austin.

*Tyler Booker, IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)
The offer tweet picture with Colt McCoy when the 6-foot-4, 315-pounder was a youth is noted. So are the offers from Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

*Conner Robertson, Westlake (Austin, TX)
Family ties to Texas, family has moved full time to Austin from Connecticut.

GH: Bevo.

EN: Texas prediction.

*Qae’shon Sapp, Lee County (Leesburg, GA)
Texas heading into South Georgia to recruit a prospect Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Georgia are recruiting.

*Aliou Bah, IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)
Texas can hang around here, if the interest remains.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE:
**Bear Alexander, Ryan (Denton, TX) - GEORGIA
Texas will not give up on Alexander. Neither will Texas A&M, and now Alabama is probably more motivated too. Committing this early as a premium position prospect simply places a big target on the back of the school committed to.

*Jaray Bledsoe, Bremond (Bremond, TX)
Bledsoe has instantly become one of the most coveted defensive line prospects in the country, and that means the fight is on for Texas A&M and Texas to keep the 6-foot-4, 270-pounder with long arms and 10-inch hands home.

GH: Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas have the advantage of close to home for sure. This is all coming at him and his mom so quick, hard to make a prediction at this point.

EN: Demand is going to make this a very difficult recruitment for any school to win. My initial reaction is to predict A&M but I don’t know how he’s wired.

*Khurtiss Perry, Park Crossing (Montgomery, AL)
The staff is a big fan of Perry, and his high ceiling upside. So is Alabama and Auburn.

GH: Texas staff full of former Alabama assistants go east to beat Nick Saban on a top tier in-state top prospect. Think I’ll go with Alabama here.

EN: He’s a big priority but he’s also from Alabama, so...

*Kristopher Ross, North Shore (Houston, TX)
Texas offered the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder with quick feet and long arms today, as did Oklahoma earlier in the week.
GH: Ross moved to North Shore from Port Arthur Memorial High, where he grew up around Jordan Thomas and Jaylon Guilbeau.

EN: UT can win this one, but it won't likely be quick.

DEFENSIVE END:
**Omari Abor, Duncanville (Duncanville, TX)
Texas has made it know to Abor, and the Duncanville staff that he is coveted. So has Oklahoma, and Ohio State creates stars in Abor’s eyes.

GH: Texas 4x100 meter team on this will be Bo Davis, Pete Kwiatkowski, Steve Sarkisian and Jeff Banks. They will have to run a perfect race.

EN: This is going to be a hotly contested recruitment. As of today I’d predict UT to finish third. We’ll see.

**Ernest Cooper IV, Martin (Arlington, TX)
Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis is putting in the effort here, but the staff knows it’s an uphill climb.

GH: Austin Uke predicts Stanford.

EN: Stanford. Texas might make this interesting but even that will be difficult. Maybe if they offer every one of his teammates it will help.

**Malick Sylla, Katy High (Katy, TX) - TEXAS A&M
Texas re-offered the Texas A&M commitment, and that’s where IT will leave this one for now.

GH: Considering Texas A&M is running a really fast race in Houston with the competition other than LSU still in the starting blocks, sticking with the Aggies here.

EN: If I left my wife a note saying I was headed to the dentist there would be more excitement in it than his “Texas re-offered” tweet.

LINEBACKER:
**Trevell Johnson, Martin (Arlington, TX)
The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder is a top priority at the position for the new staff with contact from multiple coaching staff members.

GH: Texas was at the top of the list before the coaching change. The Longhorns position has only seemingly strengthened.

EN: Texas prediction.

*Kip Lewis, Carthage (Carthage, TX)
The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder burst onto the recruiting scene in Carthage’s run to a 137th state championship.

GH: Too early to tell here. The recruiting process has come at Lewis quickly.

*Kobe McKinzie, Coronado (Lubbock, TX) - OKLAHOMA
GH: If there is one program that could change the mind of McKinzie, it’s likely Texas due to the new defensive staff and scheme.

EN: He’s a Jack. I think Kwiatkowski’s track record with sack artists could make this interesting.

*Emeka Megwa, Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth, TX)
GH: Megwa wants to play running back, and that will very likely impact the Longhorns’ recruiting efforts barring a major change.

EN: This is his position rather than running back but we’re not sure where he sits on the Texas board.

*Harold Perkins, Cypress Park (Cypress, TX)
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound freak athlete has Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida and OU all ahead of Texas currently.

GH: Texas will have to come from behind and beat Nick Saban, childhood favorite LSU, Houston area close friendships with Texas A&M commits, Tim Brewster and the arch-rival.

EN: Not Texas.

DEFENSIVE BACK:
**Terrance Brooks, John Paul II (Plano, TX)
Make no mistake, the Longhorns covet the son of former Texas A&M and NFL safety Chet Brooks as a cornerback with versatility. The family really likes Terry Joseph, and the new defensive scheme.

GH: Texas, as of today. I am on Stanford and Texas A&M watch, however.

EN: Texas prediction.

**Denver Harris, Galena Park North Shore (Houston, TX)
Harris is one of the nations top cornerback prospects due to his combination of height, length, quickness, speed and intelligence. Steve Sarkisian is scheduled to chat with Harris Friday.

GH: Texas, Alabama or Texas A&M for me, and the Longhorns new staff is impressing defensive backs in Houston and beyond.

EN: As far as proximity and the school itself, UT sets up well in this recruitment and has some home field advantages. Texas is the pick.

**Landon Hullaby, Mansfield Timberview (Arlington, TX)
Hullaby was re-offered by the Longhorns, and instantly became the favorites for his versatile safety with cornerback feet. With Terry Joseph having been the lead recruiter for Notre Dame, there is already a solid relationship to go with the family ties to the program. This is a recruitment on “commitment watch”.

GH: Texas.

EN: Texas prediction.

**Bobby Taylor, Katy High (Katy, TX)
If Texas were to end up beating out Texas A&M for the 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, IT would consider it an upset.

GH: Texas A&M.

EN: A&M prediction.

**Bryan Allen Jr., Aledo (Aledo, TX)
Texas has re-offered the pure safety, and Allen Jr. knows he’s wanted badly by the new staff.

GH: My only prediction is Allen will stay close to home, and that could be Texas A&M, Oklahoma or Texas.

EN: It’s too soon to predict him to A&M. I think UT can win it.

**Bryce Anderson, West Brook (Beaumont, TX)
Texas is all in on the versatile DB prospect that is being recruited as a CB and nickel by every program. Steve Sarkisian, Terry Joseph and Blake Gideon have all be in the phone with Anderson in the last week.

GH: Going with Texas here, but Texas A&M and other programs will not go quietly.

EN: The same as Allen, but more confident UT can win it. LSU struck while the iron was hot with both Allen and Anderson. That iron is now cool to the touch. Momentum matters.

**Jarred Kerr, Lexington (Lexington, TX)
Texas has re-offered the versatile defensive back that will be evaluated as a CB, N and safety.

EN: Texas prediction. “Mr. Nahlin, you can not make me smile. Only after Devon Campbell and Jarred Kerr sign their papers will I consider showing that weakness. And even then, it must be mid-10 mile run through Weimar. “HookEm.”

*Kamari Wilson, IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)
GH: A prediction to Texas? Not up in here!

EN: Y’all need to stay off Twitter.

Blue should get his 5th star soon. His #60 ranking in the country is bullshit. He's a top 25 prospect, and I'm not being biased. That kid is fucking elite.

Had a coaching buddy in that district tell me it's only a matter of time before he gets a 5th. Best RB in the country in a very tough Houston area district.

A more tempered take on 2022s from Darius Terrell, including some players I haven't heard of (he's using his own personal rankings):

Spoiler

Early Snapshot of 2022

I’m sure a few of you would be interested to see how things are looking already for the 2022 class on the recruiting trail with the conclusion of 2021 coming yesterday.

In this section I’ll take a quick look at what’s going currently with the top 30 prospects in the class and where I believe Texas currently stands with them. From a scale of 1-10 (1 being “no way in hell” and 10 being “he already has his locker picked out.”

1*** Quinn Ewers QB Southlake Carroll

What’s going on: Committed to Ohio State

Chances Texas wins: 3. While contact is being kept, I think Texas will need a few things to fall their way for Ewers to somehow end up back in the class.

2*** Denver Harris CB North Shore

What’s going on: Harris has always liked Texas and a staff change hasn’t done much to deter that. He is a national recruit and Texas will have some very stiff competition for his signature, but the Longhorns have as good of a chance as anyone in this one.

Chances Texas wins: 7.

3*** Devon Campbell OL Arlington Bowie

What’s going on: Similar to Harris, Campbell is a guy that has always liked Texas and he was targeted early by the previous staff. New Offensive Line Coach Kyle Flood has already made contact with Campbell and the Longhorns remain in a good spot for the talented big man.

Chances Texas wins: 7.

4*** Omari Abor DE Duncanville

What’s going on: I feel like a few different things would have to go Texas’ way for Abor to seriously consider them. He grew up an Oklahoma fan and his father is a big fan of SEC football. Texas would need to have a great season to have a shot at this guy, in my opinion.

Chances Texas wins: 3.

5*** R.J. Cooper DE Arlington Martin

What’s going on: Luckily, the previous Texas staff was all over Cooper, so Texas shouldn’t be offset by the coaching turnover too much here. I’ve got some background on Cooper that suggests that Stanford is going to be a real player here. He is high on academics.

Chances Texas wins: 5.

6*** Malick Sylla DE Katy

What’s going on: Committed to Texas A&M

Chances Texas wins: 1. Sylla is likely locked in to A&M and if he were to rethink things, Texas would still have ground to make up on others.

7*** Jaydon Blue RB Klein Cain

What’s going on: Committed to Texas

Chances Texas wins: 9. It’s still really early, but it’s never a bad thing to hold a commitment from one of the nation’s best.

8*** Bear Alexander DT Denton Ryan

What’s going on: Committed to Georgia.

Chances Texas wins: 1. Texas always seemed to be a little bit behind the pack with Alexander and I’m not sure that I expect a whole lot to change on that front in the coming months.

9*** Kameron Dewberry OL Humble Atascocita

What’s going on: Dewberry has offers from all of the nationally elite. Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Alabama figure to be the main competition group for Texas to try to separate themselves from.

Chances Texas wins: 5. Texas has to have a big-time year on the field in 2021 to have a real chance of pulling this one off.

10*** Harold Perkins LB Cypress Park

What’s going on: Perkins is the top LB prospect in the state and his list of suitors is long and impressive. I personally think that the kid has an eye for the SEC, but we will see how it plays out.

Chances Texas wins: 4. I don’t have a good feel for Texas’ chances currently.

11*** Caleb Burton WR Del Valle

What’s going on: Committed to Ohio State

Chances Texas wins: 1. Like I said a few months ago, this one isn’t happening for Texas.

12*** Kobie McKinzie LB/DE Lubbock Cooper

What’s going on: Committed to Oklahoma

Chances Texas wins: 1. Even prior to committing to the Sooners as a Sophomore, Texas and McKinzie have never really been linked.

13*** Armani Winfield WR Lewisville

What’s going on: Committed to Texas

Chances Texas wins: 8. Winfield was close to committing to Texas under Tom Herman, so it’s safe to assume he’s always wanted to be a Longhorn. It’s still early and you always have to keep an eye on Wide Receivers, they like attention.

14*** Cory Hendrix OL College Station

What’s going on: Hendrix is still a bit under the radar. Have to think when/if the Aggies offer, it’s going to be tough to keep him away from there.

Chances Texas wins: 3. Texas would do themselves a favor to go ahead and offer.

15*** Kelvin Banks OT Houston Summer Creek

What’s going on: Banks already has one decommitment under his belt (Oklahoma State) and he doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to rush into another. His stock has blown up since then. Many believe that he is an A&M lean. Texas re-offered the other day.

Chances Texas wins: 4. I’m still trying to get a feel for where Texas stands, Kelvin doesn’t tip his hand much when we speak. I don’t have any reason to believe that the Longhorns are one of his current favorites.

16*** Bryan Allen Jr. S Aledo

What’s going on: BJ recently decommitted from LSU and is hitting a reset on his recruitment. Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas figure to be big players for his signature.

Chances Texas wins: 5. This one is going to be a battle.

17*** Tavorus Jones RB El Paso Burges

What’s going on: Stan Drayton was the first to offer Jones last year and that fact is not lost on the talented rusher. The fact that Drayton was retained only enhances the odds that Texas eventually closes on this one, despite the commitment of Jaydon Blue.

Chances Texas wins: 7.

18*** Conner Weigman QB Bridgeland

What’s going on: Rumors are swirling that Weigman could be making a decision soon. If that proves to be true, it won’t be Texas because the Longhorns haven’t offered.

Chances Texas wins: 2. Looking like A&M or Florida.

19*** Evan Stewart WR Frisco Liberty

What’s going on: Stewart has offers from the nation’s elite. He is very high on Texas and the Texas staff. While I’m expecting a bit of a roller coaster recruitment, Texas currently has as good of a shot as anyone.

Chances Texas wins: 7.

20*** Bryce Anderson S Beaumont Westbrook

What’s going on: Anderson recently decommitted from LSU. I do know that he likes Texas, but many believe that Texas A&M has the inside track currently in this one.

Chances Texas wins: 4.

21*** Brenen Thompson WR Spearman

What’s going on: Thompson has offers from all of the nation’s elite. He likes the Longhorns a lot and Texas is going to have a legitimate chance to win him over.

Chances Texas wins: 6.

22. Josh Hoover QB Rockwall Heath

What’s going on: Hard to get guys you don’t offer. The vibe I’m hearing is that Arkansas is close to locking this one up.

Chances Texas wins: 1.

23*** Jordan Hudson WR Garland

What’s going on: Committed to Oklahoma.

Chances Texas wins: 3. Hudson is a stud that was a priority for the previous staff. It remains to be seen if the new staff goes after him, but either way I think he’s pretty solid to the Sooners.

24*** Julian Humphrey CB Houston Clear Lake

What’s going on: I may be a little higher on Humphrey than most. He has some pretty good early offers and isn’t in any rush to make a decision.

Chances Texas wins: 6. Texas would immediately shoot to the top of Humphrey’s list with an offer.

25*** Anthony Black WR Coppell

What’s going on: I haven’t seen Texas and Black linked much at all. Black’s father played Basketball at Baylor.

Chances Texas wins: 2.

26*** Jaylon Guilbeau CB Port Arthur Memorial

What’s going on: Committed to Texas.

Chances Texas wins: 5. Guilbeau is keeping his options open after the coaching changes. A lot can happen between now and Signing Day next year, including possibly even the Longhorns deciding to go in a different direction. TBD.

***27 Chace Biddle S Garland

What’s going on: Biddle likes Texas. One of his good friends, Jordan Hudson is committed to Oklahoma and Biddle is a priority for the Sooners. This one is going to be a fight.

Chances Texas wins: 5.

28*** Donovan Green TE Dickinson

What’s going on: Have to think Green is locked in to A&M.

Chances Texas wins: 1.

29*** Cameron Williams OT Duncanville

What’s going on: It’s hard to land a guy when you haven’t offered him.

Chances Texas wins: 2.

30*** Curlee Thomas DE Fort Worth Nolan

What’s going on: See Cameron Williams.

Chances Texas wins: 6. If the Longhorns do decide to make a move here, I have plenty of reasons to believe that they would shoot to the top of his list and possibly even earn a quick commitment.

A more tempered take on 2022s from Darius Terrell, including some players I haven't heard of (he's using his own personal rankings):

  Reveal hidden contents

What’s going on: I haven’t seen Texas and Black linked much at all. Black’s father played Basketball at Baylor.

That read wasn't as much fun.

Nahlin and Gerry with a (dare I say) Perroni-esque predictions piece for 2022. Overflowing with Kool-Aid.

  Hide contents

This is always the time when IT goes all-out with Kool-aid. (or Flavour-aid, whatever)

Nahlin and Gerry with a (dare I say) Perroni-esque predictions piece for 2022. Overflowing with Kool-Aid.

You aren't kidding about the Koolaid, their predictions would give us a starting class of:

QB: Ewers or Klubnik

RB: Blue/Miller

WR: Winfield/Coleman/Stewart/Thompson

TE: Llewellyn

OL: Campbell/Robertson

DT: Ross

LB: Johnson

DB: Guilbeau/Brooks/Harris/Hullaby/Anderson/Kerr

Would have to fill in the OL and front 7 from there but yeah...that would work. Most surprising to me is Gerry picking Anderson to Texas, I thought he was a threat to drop to aggy at any moment.

Anderson is weird. He's probably an aggy silent right now.

Nahlin and Gerry with a (dare I say) Perroni-esque predictions piece for 2022. Overflowing with Kool-Aid.

IT should be embarrassed to publish this. They always do go heaviest on the sunshine a year out. Can’t wait for pissy Nahlin for the rest of the year as his ridiculous predictions don’t hit.

This is the biggest question right now. We don’t seem to be in a good spot for any of the elite in-state edge rushers, so we’ll need to go out of state. We need edge rushers badly and can’t afford to settle this year.

The bad news is that it also looks like a trash year at the position in California. And a trash year for talent period in AZ.

The good news is that with Covid nixing various seasons and camps there's a chance some guys will appear on the scene and make huge jumps out of nowhere. We're going to need to be ready to pounce on those motherfuckers fast, because it looks like shit. Fortunately, we have a fully staffed and prepped recruiting department up and running thanks to the excellent work of Christine Del Conte.

Anderson looks like the guy that suddenly started trending Texas. Go look at how they referenced his decommit at the time and what they just published about him. I'm going off of memory from this thread, but if I'm right, it's night and day.
