Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

I don't really agree with any of this. Gerry has no clue how good the Cali QB is and can't realistically compare out of state WRs to in-state wide receivers. Same goes with OL. I don't think Alabama gives a shit whether they sign the top tackle in Alabama as long as they have the ability to sign top guys in Texas, California, Florida, etc. Bottom line for me, if we recruit well from wherever in the country and win on the field, Texas recruits will be interested in us now and in the future.

Didn't Herman have more success out of state in his first full year of recruiting and followed it up with a stronger in-state class the next year?

You have that backwards. He dominated Houston (and therefore Texas, in that cycle) in 2018, then pulled in a bunch of out-of-state blue-chippers in 2019.

To add context, a big part of him going OOS in 2019 was due to losing recruiting battles in-state to Jimbo first. Guys like Leal, Richardson, Wright, Green, Cupp, etc. Herman wasn’t trying to recruit heavily OOS in 2019.

For the people who were asking why Murphy was ranked so high, check out this video. There’s just not many people on this planet who can throw the ball like he does. If he can clean up his mechanics and some other little things, then he could be a great take, but you’d like to see him make some progress on those things before you take him. Unfortunately there hasn’t been much opportunity to see it yet.

Ewers is obviously number one, but it'll be interesting to see how long Sark will wait, and who he has as #2 between Murphy and Klubnik.

He’s got a cannon. Would not be upset if he ends up as the QB take.

Good thing we have a coaching staff who can develop QBs. I would prefer they take a high ceiling guy and develop.

Luckily for us California's season being pushed back and his injury shortened season give us time to push for Ewere longer than we could with Klubnik as the #2.

Are they starting this month?  Maxpreps has his HS as having a game 2/26 and a few more listed afterwards.

Oh look. Jeff George.

Yeah, that’s pretty much the concern with him. A lot off field/development questions that people who haven’t seen him in person in the last year can’t really answer.

And to be fair, Jeff George could throw the ball further than SydneyCarton would go to hold closetojumping ’s water. The end’s of the earth is a real long way.
Also, that Jeff George is only 10 years older than a super bowl starter in 2021 is wild.

(Nick Harris) The Stampede: Recruiting intel from Pylon Dallas

Quote

Even before Steve Sarkisian made it to Austin to begin his tenure as the Texas head coach, chatter on the recruiting trail including the Longhorns was in full gear. So much so that at halftime of the national championship, a good 12 hours before Sarkisian would hop on his one-way flight to Austin to get to work, he landed Armani Winfield to get the wheels spinning in the 2022 class once again.

That momentum continued into his first month on the job, but with a lackluster 2021 cycle being inherited, Sarkisian and staff had quite a bit of damage control to tend to on that end before diving deep into the 2022 class. Now that the 2021 class is signed and sealed, the focus has shifted to one of the deeper in-state classes in recent memory with a staff eager to make some big splashes, especially after last week's commitment from the top running back in the state, Jaydon Blue. In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we dive into some notes in the 2022 class and recap a busy weekend at Dallas' Pylon 7-on-7 tournament.

Defensive Staff Going All-In on Safety Recruiting

Each of the top two safeties in the state, Beaumont West Brook's Bryce Anderson and Aledo's Bryan Allen Jr., have recently gone back on the market after decommitting from LSU. In talking to each over the weekend at Pylon Dallas, Texas has put all of their chips on the table and is going after each behind a spirited effort from newly-hired safeties coach Blake Gideon. Gideon came into the job in January relatively unproven on the recruiting trail. But in talking to Allen, Anderson and some additional safety targets we'll get into later, Gideon has given recruits a solid vibe early on and is radiating energy that excites prospects.

— Anderson has picked up a lot of chatter in the week since he decommitted from LSU as schools like Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and more have been in frequent contact. The buzz around the Aggies and Anderson goes back about a month as Anderson has been intrigued by the season they just had and the proximity to home. On the other hand, Anderson told me over the weekend that no school is recruiting him harder than Texas right now. He’s had daily conversations with Gideon and/or secondary coach Terry Joseph since they arrived in Austin and Anderson likes what he hears from both of them.

In talking to multiple sources over the weekend, this has emerged as a two-horse race between the Aggies and Longhorns with Clemson creeping. If the Tigers were to offer, they would be another legitimate threat. As always, Ohio State and Alabama are ones to keep an eye on moving forward. I entered a 247Sports Crystal Ball in favor of the Aggies the day he decommitted from LSU, but I have now lowered my confidence score to a 2. With a decision not expected until the late summer at the earliest, this recruitment will be really fluid, especially if visits open back up on April 15.

— Bryan Allen Jr. is another prospect who recently decommitted from LSU that has been in frequent contact with Texas. When talking to Allen, he expressed similar feelings about Gideon and liked his energy early on. Gideon is setting up a phone call with Allen and Sarkisian this week to build their relationship. Allen is currently evaluating his options and is in no rush to jump into a decision, but Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia and Texas A&M have emerged as a top grouping early in the re-opening of his recruitment. I like Texas’ current positioning and think the Longhorns can come out of these next couple of months as the leader in his recruitment ahead of visits possibly re-opening after April 15.

— In looking at other safety prospects, Texas currently has in-state offers out to Anderson, Allen, Garland’s Chace Biddle, Mansfield Timberview’s Landon Hullaby and Argyle Liberty Christian’s Cristian Driver. Biddle, who was trending hard towards Texas in the summer, is trending harder towards Oklahoma as each day passes. Jordan Hudson remains in his ear about the possibility of playing together again at the next level while the Sooners staff has prioritized Biddle more than the new Texas staff has since coming in. Hullaby had a previous relationship with Joseph from his time recruiting him at Notre Dame, and it was a big reason why the Fighting Irish were in his top grouping. Joseph has introduced Hullaby to Gideon and the two have built a solid relationship in the month that he’s been on staff. With family ties to the program with his brother, Texas linebacker Jaden Hullaby, I think he could be Texas' to lose if they decide to push.

Pylon Notes

— It’s that time of the year when the 7-on-7 circuit really starts to heat up as multiple regional squads made the trip to Carrollton to compete in Pylon Dallas. Perennial DFW contender Team Flex debuted their reloaded group as Evan Stewart, Jay Fair, Johntay Cook, Nick Evers, Daniel Demery, Bryan Allen Jr., Anthony Black and more suited up for them over the weekend. Houston-based Texas All-Stars debuted their newly-assembled squad with the likes of Rueben Owens, Bryce Anderson and a talented group of underclassmen. DFW-based True Buzz saw Garret Rangel lead the way on offense and Anthony Hill on defense.

— Frisco Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart is undoubtedly one of the biggest targets on the board for just about every major program in the country, including Texas. Stewart, who is widely popular on social media with a big Instagram and TikTok following, put out a tweet in January hinting at an imminent commitment. As expected, the tweet blew up and subsequently so did Stewart’s phone. The attention caught him off guard and made the recruiting process really overwhelming in that moment for him.

After talking to his family and evaluating his decision process, he felt it was best to take a step back and slow things down at the moment in his recruitment. In the time since, his parents have been the ones fielding calls from college coaches while Stewart focuses on the 7-on-7 season for the time-being. Behind an all-in approach from Sarkisian and wide receivers Andre Coleman, Texas is in a good position along with Florida, Georgia, Oregon and Alabama.

— El Campo 2023 four-star running back Rueben Owens has been moving fast with his recruitment as he has already directed his attention towards a top five of Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M. Owens had planned on committing in January, but will take more time and look to make a decision in the summer. Oklahoma owned a sizable lead in this recruitment but has seen it whittle down as time has gone on. Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton has built a good relationship with the family and Owens is intrigued by the possibility of playing alongside Jaydon Blue. This will be one to watch heading into the spring, especially if Texas builds some considerable momentum in the 2022 class.

Quick Hitters

— Dallas Parish Episcopal 2023 athlete Daniel Demery just wrapped up a solid sophomore season on both sides of the ball for the Panthers as he continues to field interest from multiple schools. Texas has not been in contact since the new staff has taken over.

— DeSoto 2023 wide receiver Johntay Cook mentioned Texas as one of the schools recruiting him the hardest right now. He said that he has seen a significant change with Texas since the new staff has taken over and has a good relationship with Coleman.

— Rockwall-Heath 2022 wide receiver Jay Fair doesn't hold a Texas offer, but is starting to see some considerable attention on the recruiting trail. Georgia, Florida and Texas A&M have been in heavy pursuit while major programs are also close to pulling the trigger on an offer.

— The more I talk to Denton Ryan 2023 linebacker Anthony Hill, the more I think he's SEC bound.

— I caught up with Bremond 2022 defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe last week who had great things to say about defensive line coach Bo Davis. In talking to sources close to Bledsoe, Davis has done a solid job relating with Bledsoe and has been one of the more authentic coaches early in his recruiting process.

Bobby Burton: Monday

Quote

As I was watching the Super Bowl, I thought of the similarities between Tom Brady and Nick Saban. Not Saban and his coaching friend Bill Belichick. Why? Saban and Brady are the two biggest winners of the modern major sports era. Both sit atop any leader board with seven championships a piece. I mention this because nowadays, the best QBs on the field in the pro ranks are essentially coaches themselves.

After all, how many NFL coaches are actually younger and less experienced than Brady? Kliff Kingsbury, now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, was actually drafted by the Patriots when Brady was already on the roster. Brady and the Buccaneers beat the Chiefs soundly. Yet Brady wasn’t the only one who put in a winning performance. Neither was Nick Saban the only one on the sideline contributing to his championships. The best bring it out of their teammates and their coaches while maximizing their own abilities and strengths. That’s what Saban and Brady do better than anybody.

**

Because of the pandemic, spring recruiting is going to be odd yet again this year. Coaches must make scholarship offers and take commitments from recruits without ever meeting them in person. That means coaches won’t know just how tall or big any recruit is unless they show up at a combine. They’ll have to rely on others; or maybe they’ll have to rely strictly on the game film to influence their decisions. I have often wondered if a scout/coach only evaluated recruits off of game film whether or not they would get better results than allowing performances at a combine come into play.
