So when can we start the surly NIL fund?  I'm sure we can muster up a few hundred bucks for Alfred Collins to make an appearance on our podcast.  Let's show these recruits the power of $3.50 sponsors!

maybe on some level but there also should be another level up.

The states are allowing basically anything so far, but the NCAA is hopelessly appealing to the supreme court/congress to restrict the states. Once the SCOTUS ruling is handed down, expect the NCAA to pass restrictions greater than the current, which is pretty toothless and generic.

The case before SCOTUS right now is dealing with a different issue than NIL money from third parties. It likely won’t have any impact on this rule. The NCAA first said they’d fight it, but have now backed off and have basically just been begging the federal government to pass a law so there’s a uniform standard across the country. I doubt the NCAA will do much other than eliminate the rule about players losing eligibility for receiving NIL compensation. There’s basically 0 chance they actually review and enforce all the different NIL contracts for every player across the country. Maybe they try to make an example of an egregious abuse of the system that’s dropped in their lap, but even then I doubt it.

Yeah $300k was an exaggeration. The point was that now Bear Alexander could get his bags through legal means (which may also increase the size and frequency of bags)

But your stat is kind of my point. If the average endorsement deal is like $1k in college, is that really going to sway a recruit's decision vs. a gray area "bags" deal? Idk which outweighs the other, but basically there are two forces being unleashed - 1. legit commercial deals (helps the UTs/USCs of the world) and 2. enabling larger, safer, more common "bags" (helps the Aggies/UGAs of the world)

I think you’re really underestimating NIL income if you think 1k will be the average for a player at Texas. And players who are getting huge bags to commit to blue bloods are not your average player anyways.

Can the university pay a player to help promote the athletic department?  Where are the rules for this?  Can espn pay Bijan to make an appearance on the LHN?

There's going to be a segmentation in player NIL market, and I imagine only a few will command high values. There can be all the gimmicks in order to pay all the football roster, and don't forget baseball and basketball too. But "real" money will likely be made by the bluechip players.. and is there any doubt that those players will get paid regardless of where they go among the top programs?

So theoretically, the next Case McCoy and Jordan Hicks can now sell their videos from bowl game hotel shenanigans to boosters?

Finally a way for us 2%ers to contribute to the slush fund. Let me know where to send the venmo.

Well shit... Imagine the money hot volleyball players can make.  Half the creeps on surly would be on their only fans account trying to sugar baby them up.

No. The Texas law does not allow direct compensation from the school.

I think you and others are drastically underestimating the ability of people to make money through marketing/social media. I have a client who runs a small marketing firm that specializes in advertising/generating leads through social media influencers and the pay he can bring in for an influencer who even has 10k followers in a highly specific demographic is pretty surprising. There’s a lot of legitimate money to be made here if NIL is utilized correctly, and not just for the top 3-5 stars on the roster.

The Texas law also prohibits compensation from sexually oriented businesses. Some of the other states may not have that restriction, so who knows how the NCAA will handle that.

Lana Rhodes can do it AFTER doing milking titties porn and pregnancy porn and everything else for a couple years or more. That's analogous (or ANALogous) to top stars showing out and then cashing in. A blue-collar "team player" wouldn't have the cachet, but perhaps I'm indeed underestimating targeting social media/marketing. I have seen youtube travel vloggers-- no name folks-- doing quite well to the point of being able to just travel and have a lifestyle while raking in the money.

enhancing or showcasing sexiness isn't the same as being sexually oriented business, though, right? women often use their sexual appeal to get ahead in the business world too, even in today's hyper senstive work environment.

This. Very much this. tiktok, IG, Twitch, any of those platforms - they monetize that shit VERY well. If you think it's only gonna be blue chip players or the big names you haven't paid attention to the money that can be made. Twitch is a fucking monster cash feed because you have subscriptions, ads, donations, sponsorships, and streaming (read Youtube) all as revenue streams. Imagine you are T. Sweat you are already paid by Dell to play games only on ALIENWARE LAPTOPS - and then you stream Fortnite or COD or w/e  (again sponsored by Dell) picking up subscribers at 1¢ to $1 per viewer per hour (current Twitch trends) If you get 10,000 viewers, that’s $100 to $10,000 per hour of gameplay - on top of the money you already get by being a Dell/Alienware sponsored player. Oh, and while you do it - you are on IG and hit some reels as well - all showing your Alienware laptop - your RAZR mouse - your TAG watch, etc ... (each with a $$$ attached). And this is is just 1 TINY example and it would not take a blue chip big star to be successful. Some of the funniest and most engaging guys are going to stand to hit it big.  If someone like TLaw had done this twice a week last year? HUGE money. HUGE. to play video games for 2-3 hours a week. One example.

This for sure. I have a friend who accidentally backed into making money on Instagram through a cocktail feed. His account started getting some traction and it was shocking how early (like a couple thousand followers) that companies started reaching out to him with offers to pay him to use their brands and sending him free bottles and glassware. He's built the thing to like 14K followers pretty fast without a ton of effort.

Guy already had a great job and now a nice little side source of income that keeps his bar stocked.

Like Burt Macklin, some of us aren't just speculating when it comes to thoughts on influencer marketing, PR, branding, endorsements, events, etc. Some of you guys reductively playing the "only the best players will benefit" canard and then acting as though there's not a lot of money to go around in the social media place, even locally, look like fucking idiots on this thread right now.

I know a Twitch streamer who has a consistent audience of 200-300 people and he's making like 10k a month off subs, donations, advertising, and partnerships. That's with Twitch taking half of the cost of the subs away.

Nobody is paying 3-star guys to come to their schools right now. The blue chip players will just have more suiters and less need for dark-alley deals. If boosters today are buying 10 recruits a year at $80k, that's $800k. If they are willing to drop $800k a year under the table with all of the hassles that come from having to hide it, try to not get caught up in FBI stings, evade NCAA investigations, etc. then it will be easy to find boosters willing to drop $2mil a year legally. Hell, we dropped tens(hundreds?) of millions of dollars on a new locker room to try to get recruits. Paying them directly is a much better investment.

5-stars today: Can get paid $80k-$100k to commit. Possibly rent for parents house, walking around money, Ford F250s to drive, etc.

5-stars w/NIL: Can get guarantee of base $100k in NIL, plus enough monthly to cover house, walking around money, cars, etc. Money would be "above board" and more schools willing to play the game (higher demand == higher payout).

3-star today: Not getting paid to commit. Chance to get $100 handshakes after a good game.

3-star w/NIL: No guarantee of NIL payment. Chances to earn $1000/month, plus brand building. More opportunities to earn, and "above board".

Jalen Wydermyer: 8.1k

Haynes King: 6.8k

Kenyon Green: 1.5k

That's three potential first rounders plus the starting QB with less followers combined than a Longhorn with one career TD.

The LHN is going to see a ton of new advertising opportunities so we can funnel NIL money to athletes.

AND.....if Sark and Beard are as successful as we hope, the LHN will become a hotter commodity, driving up advertising rates, funneling even more money to athletes.

All those guys could make 6 figures if they have a good rep who’s actively searching for marketing opportunities for them. Just stop and think about brand sponsorships, paid IG posts, apparel shoots, autograph sessions, twitch, YouTube, cameo, etc., plus camps, speaking opportunities, appearances. There’s a ton of money to be made if this is done correctly by the school/player.

The real challenge will be balancing all that with still being fully committed and focused on football.

And it will also show just how criminal the NCAA’s arbitrary and pointless prohibitions of this revenue has been. Fuck the NCAA.

Some really good stuff here in regard to the NIL that probably deserves its own conversation on this board, since many don’t want to deal with Football boarders. Any moderators here want to move these comments to a new Recruiting board NIL thread? No? And fuck you, Vito? Ok.

(Before I fuck off completely, I suspect one of the players who stands to make the most under the new rules is one Arch Manning, but he’s ‘23...)

(CJ Vogel) Quick Hitter | Derrick Brown OU Visit

Spoiler

Was able to connect with Texarkana OLB Derrick Brown following his OU visit this past weekend.

*** Brown told me the visit to Norman went well. However, I do not believe that it was enough to really improve the Sooners’ chances in this race..

*** After speaking with him last week at Texas High’s summer workouts, I can confidently say that Brown enjoyed his time in Austin more so than his trip to Oklahoma.

*** This may not be a new development regarding how you deciphered my update after his official visit. This is what I posted if you missed it. But Texas really did do a great job with Brown on his OV.

Brown loved the visit. It sounds like Texas really knocked it out of the park and really put themselves in a good position to land the talented OLB prospect…

… Regardless, Jeff Choate and Steve Sarkisian did a great job with their first in-person meeting with Brown.

*** I still really like where Texas sits in this recruitment. Brown will visit Texas Tech this Friday.

The compensation would be coming from Only Fans though, so it would fall under the language of the statute.
