Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

In all seriousness, this strategy - and I am talking about the option 2 scenario you wrote about as the new Sark approach to our football recruiting against the Sec and other bag games. Does this take time to work effectively?  More patience needed?  Seems like the current results are not indicative of a successful working “play the game” strategy that I am hoping we are truly going to attempt.

I see visits by Georgia commits and dewberry and Perkins showing up in Austin so I get encouraged then i see worrisome tea leaves rumors of guys we thought were silent locks on mid week trips to aggy (as an example)and get the feeling of all brakes no gas.

I assume a lot of UT fans are just not used to the wild swings that come from an era of essentially open pay for play.

If your expectation is that these kids won't visit any school besides Texas then maybe you don't really understand how this works. In this very post you stated Georgia commits are taking visits yet are concerned that supposed leans to Texas are visiting other schools? Do you understand how recruiting works at all?

You seem to have conveniently eliminated all the elite DL and EDGEs we don’t have a chance with. Bear Alexander, Abor, and Sylla all still exist.

There’s also a difference between the staff doing their best with the situation presented and the ceiling on the ideal front 7 being somewhat weak compared to the offense or to most other cycles.

Right now, we’re not in it for a true difference maker on the DL, like an Alfred Collins or even a Leal type. I like Harris a lot and think he’ll be great but that ideal DL and Edge combo doesn’t exactly blow you away, especially since it doesn’t seem all that realistic. We’re almost definitely not getting Perkins and the odds of us landing Bledsoe and Finkley seem pretty low.

I think the staff will put together a good defensive class, but the ceiling on the class seems lower than most years.

We need a stud DT, but IDK who that may be?  I think Ross will end up being pretty good and be in the 300 LB range.  I'm pretty high in Brown after watching his hudl, he gets to the QB in a hurry.

No hope with Swanson?

Solid get IMO.  I think he'll be a guy we don't see until 2-3 years, which is OK.  Hes a guy I wish we had some camp numbers/clips to get a better idea on.  I'm anxious to see Jones's Sr year, as has been pointed out, he looks like the kind of guy PK would turn into a beast at UW.

He's a nice floor setter, but a high-end private school kid from a football family with ok-but-not-great measureables probably doesn't have a ton of untapped potential.

I posted several pages back, but his pic of him standing next to Sark he's a few inches taller, and google told me Sark is 6'2, so his 6'4 listing may be legit.  But yeah, would like to see how he'd do in a camp setting.

Team composite is now .8996, Stone is a low composite 3* (.8004).

Long snapper is a 2 star

I guess it doesn’t really matter, but if specialist aren’t going to be rated in relation to other specialist and instead all be given universally low ratings, then they probably shouldn’t be included in the composite average.

My dream interior pickup (knowing Bear isn't coming) would be the current committed CAL kid who is whipping everyone in front of him at camps right now or Bledsoe

If we are dreaming I want Hero Kanu or McClellan.  Wiggins would be #3.

Sounds like a friend of mine who started in the pros for years.

I thought that the ratings only counted like the first 20something recruits to de-emphasize the impact of class size on rankings.

I think it's an underwhelming even given the points you've raised. I think there are some good players in that "best case" list (some that we simply aren't getting) but it's list full of undersized guys that have limited frames and/or limited athleticism. You can chalk up some of the losses to social fits (like Abor) and scheme etc ... but there's no way to look at that best case list and not come away thinking that at best it's an undersized group that lacks elite athleticism. At this point I'd like to see a focus put into finding some bigger raw athletes with higher athletic upside. More focus on guys like McClellan instead of Finkley, another guy with a small maxed out frame, for example. Especially with the need for guys to have positional flexibility in this scheme. Derrick Brown and Chris McClellan would help me feel much better about the front seven - but even they are guys that should be our second tier.  Those guys should be rounding out a defensive class at Texas - not headlining it. Guys like Abor, Bear, and Sylla are miles ahead in terms of talent, frame, and athleticism. We weren't getting them (for various reasons) but the gap between them and their frames/athleticism and guys like Finkley/Bledsoe/Swanson/Ross is substantial.

With the caveat that it’s possible that these guys are actually really good, I don’t like the idea of potentially throwing numbers at the position group to make up for quality. Hopefully these guys make a difference

Jones not making it in anymore this weekend. Sounds like Gatson may have locked up the 2nd RB spot according to Wells.

I rather have had Jones..  feels like Jones will go elsewhere and be a stud a la Eno Benjamin

I’m not a “trust the corches!” guy, but if we’re rolling the dice on a lower rated every down volume backs, you can do worse than a guy who Matt Campbell targeted early; the same guy who recruited and developed Kareem Hunt, David Montgomery, and Breece Hall at lesser football programs

(Brandon Huffman) Polynesian Bowl announces DB Bryce Anderson as selection

Spoiler

Beaumont (Texas) West Brook safety Bryce Anderson has been selected to play in the 2022 Polynesian Bowl, it was announced on Thursday.

For Anderson, it’s a huge honor.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be recognized and selected to play in such a prestigious bowl such as the Polynesian Bowl,” said Anderson. “It also means a lot to me knowing that all of the hard work I put in didn’t go unnoticed.”

Anderson is eager to play in the game he’s been watching for years, including the 2020 game in which several players signed with Texas and Texas A&M.

“I watched the 2020 game and some of the players I know personally like Demond Dumas, Malik Hornsby and Bijon Robinson,” said Anderson.

Anderson is excited to showcase his skills against a number of other top players.

“It’s a big deal to me knowing that all of the hard work I put in this game didn’t go unnoticed and I get to showcase my talent against some of the best in the nation in my last high school game,” said Anderson.

It will be Anderson’s first time in Hawaii.

“I’ve never been to Hawaii and I’m definitely looking forward to it,” said Anderson. “I'm very excited to experience Hawaii and to join the culture of the Polynesian Bowl.”

Anderson said he’s gotten to know a number of players already selected to play in the 2022 Polynesian Bowl.

“I know Larry Turner-Gooden, Maalik Murphy, Domani Jackson and Kelvin Banks,” said Anderson.

Recruiting wise, Anderson has four schools standing out to him.

“The four schools that are sticking out to me the most right now are Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU,” said Anderson.

Anderson was hoping to announce in early July but is now pushing that time back.

“I originally had it for July 4th but i'm going to push it back due to my high school team making it to the Texas State 7 on 7 tournament,” said Anderson. “So that means I won't be able to take all of my official visits, so it'll be after I take all of my official visits.”

The Polynesian Bowl began in 2017 with former Stanford all-purpose back Connor Wedington the inaugural Offensive MVP and former Iowa defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa the Defensive MVP. The 2018 game was the second year and Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon and Stanford quarterback signee Tanner McKee were named Co-MVP's. The 2019 game saw Washington linebacker Daniel Heimuli and BYU receiver Puka Nacua, earn co-MVP honors. The 2020 game saw BYU quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava and Washington defensive back Meki Pei win co-MVP.

The fifth Polynesian Bowl is set for January 22, 2022 in Honolulu.

Remember right after we offered Jones, Alabama jumped in. Then half the sec, then everyone else. And now he’s essentially limited to TCU.
Why is that? Maybe there are contributing factors to everyone backing off but fat Gare, known man of integrity.

It’s nothing particularly awful, at least to my knowledge. He’s a kid who flashed a lot of potential early but plateaued in his development, so programs slowed down their pursuit. Not saying it’s the right choice or wrong one. Just seems to be the consensus.

Doesn't sound like Citizen gave them a silent, though.

Spoiler

Lake Charles (La.) Prep Top247 running back TreVonte' Citizen took his official to Texas A&M last weekend.

The Aggies at the very least will be a finalist for the blue-chipper.

“Man it was awesome,” Citizen’s father Tony said. “Real good visit. Real good visit.

“The coaches, man the coaches were real good. Experienced coaches. Really liked it. The school, education wise, it was really good. We loved the visit.”

A&M is battling Auburn, Texas, LSU and Arkansas, and find themselves closer to the top of that list.

“Texas A&M is really up there,” the elder Citizen stated. “He really liked it. Loved the atmosphere, just the truthfulness. It’s place he can play, get a good education and have a good program.”

Citizen took his first official to Texas, heads to Auburn this weekend and then LSU at the end of the month for an official.

Gerry on Hudson

Spoiler

Spoke with a source close to Hudson ... visiting SMU for sure this weekend (supposed to begin today).

If he doesn't come to Austin, SMU could gain commitment #2 in his recruitment.

Taking on the characteristics of South Florida prospect triple commitment recruitment.

OT Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek
6-5, 300
Inside skinny: Texas still leads Texas A&M and LSU with Oklahoma State and Oregon also having received OV’s. Plays for Lifetime Longhorn Kenny Harrison at Summer Creek.

Think we found out IT'S source on this recruitment.  Anyways, really hope Flood can close this one this weekend with the aggy OV coming up.
