Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

I'm of the belief that the main reason we are moving to the SEC is because our recruiting has slipped since aggy opened a pipeline to the SEC. We're gonna start to put together some incredible classes once the move is formalized. I think we'll be in the SEC in 2022 or 2023, but even if we have to wait until 2025 to play our first SEC game its not the worst outcome. This upcoming 2022 signing class, for example, would know that at the very latest, they'll play in the SEC their senior year.

The main reason we would  even be considered moving to SEC involves ESPN v Fox money battles.  Don’t doubt it, but good for Longhorns.  Hook’em!!

Danny Kanell said that both OU and TEX are prepared to pay the 76 million exit fee to start in the SEC next season. The only person to report that we are gonna wait until 2025 is Chip Brown.

Yeah we say that because we have to, now. In a few weeks the Big 12 will consist of about four teams and it won't matter.

No way this isn’t our last year in the BIG 12. If they had any intentions of staying through 2025, they would have been on that conference call.  The minute these other schools find a home, this conference is going to blow up.

From a recruiting standpoint, you have to leave now.  No recruit is going the sign up to play in a conference the next 4 years that isn’t going to exist.  This move just basically reinforced the pitch that the SEC is a better conference.   We can’t now go and pitch to them that conference doesn’t matter when we ourselves are making the move to the SEC.  We need to settle this buyout and start pitching to recruits that Texas is going to be playing in the SEC as a big dog next year.

On a side note, take a dive on the aggy thread.  It’s so funny watching those idiots build their entire sales pitch on the SEC.  Now that Texas and ou are in the conference, they have nothing to pitch.  Texas is about to fucking clean up on the recruiting trail if we can make this move happen quickly.

This week was a great reminder of why you should never get too high or too low when you follow your favorite team this closely. People who watch the stock ticker every day don’t vary between taking a nosedive out of the 30th story and popping bottles in celebration. You need to stay even-ish.

Well, maybe you should get a little higher this week than normal. Take that advice however you please, board potheads.

Whether or not you like the move to the SEC, you have to love the guile, aggressiveness, and forward thinking of the Texas decision makers. How long has it been since you’ve seen UT truly swing its might around? Fret not, indeed.

NIL

In the middle of Wednesday’s hysteria it was mentioned everything in the ‘Fret not’ piece is already in the works. That is, some ambitious alums are working to build a sophisticated network to enrich Texas players.

We’re going to keep details on the apparatus quiet but it’s being run by the sorts of competent and motivated people you’d want running it.

SEC and recruiting

Earlier in the week IT was on the phone with a source in Austin regarding some priority recruitments. In an attempt to feel out the source on the SEC (before news went public) the source was asked if he’d heard anything regarding realignment. He stated he hadn’t, and while sounding somewhat in disbelief after he was told about the SEC, he mentioned that would be huge and make the coaches’ job much more easier.

The SEC sell is the most difficult external factor for the staff to overcome, especially from Texas A&M.

Timing of the move

As IT has mentioned, the final steps have not yet been taken to close the deal out but there’s an extremely high level of confidence this will all go through. While UT is tied to the conference until 2025, we believe a break will happen much earlier with 2022 most likely, and 2023 at the latest. IT does not believe the final decision on that is set in stone — clearly there are some legal entanglements to navigate — but 2022 is more likely than 2023.

That ties into recruiting as well. A second lame duck year in the Big 12 doesn’t sound all that appealing, does it?

The genesis of the move

Preliminary discussions began before NIL legislation became law but greatly intensified once it was known the law would pass. As you’ve read, there would be no point in Texas joining the SEC without tools to mitigate time honored SEC recruiting practices.

When IT first heard rumbles of those preliminary discussions it was assumed Alabama (IT heard Bama was at the forefront) and UT were leading the charge for four conferences of 16 teams, or maybe five conferences of 12 teams. After showing spine and playing through Covid, the Big 12 looked at least somewhat safe to make it to the new landscape.

That assumption was so terrifically incorrect.

LHN

We’re not saying it’s set in stone but it’s been discussed the LHN will be folded into the SEC Network. The SEC Network could become two channels, with LHN perhaps covering the West and the current SEC Network covering the East. Of course the SEC may break down into pods so who really knows, but the takeaway is they’ll try to be clever with what they do with the LHN rather than just scrapping it altogether.

RECRUITING

WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX) - 2022: The state’s top receiver was more than moved when he heard Texas and the SEC could be happening.

Stewart's family members are big fans of the Southeastern Conference, and he’s supposed to see Florida again on July 30th.

This is a recruitment that Texas can win, even before the SEC news broke. Now, I think the Horns are set up nicely. Stewart is open to returning to Austin for a game this fall.

LB Harold Perkins, Cy-Park (Cypress, TX) - 2022: The state’s top linebacker is feeling the Texas vibe. The hybrid LB/S position the staff has discussed with the five-star athlete is beginning to resonate. IT spoke with a source close to Perkins on Wednesday, and this person believes Texas is currently ahead of Texas A&M among the in-state schools due to Texas' scheme and a liking for the city of Austin. As we have maintained, this is a recruitment that remains scheduled to last until the first week of January. Fall OV’s to Florida and Oregon are scheduled, and Alabama could also receive one. There will be unofficials to Texas, Texas A&M and LSU in the fall. Perkins remains scheduled to be in Austin on July 30, and the source was unsure if he would be at Texas A&M the following day due to a potential scheduling conflict.

EDGE Derrick Brown, Texas High (Texarkana, TX) - 2022: One recruitment where Texas is looking outstanding is with the 6-foot-4, 210-pound four-star from the edge of East Texas. Brown has a top two of Texas and Baylor and is set to see Austin again on July 30, one day before he announces his decision.

This dude liked UT before the SEC discussion. Now, calculator.

LB Jeremy Patton, Tenaha (Tenaha, TX): After catching up with the 6-foot-2, 210-pound three-star, IT believes Texas remains in a great spot for the athletic inside linebacker. He’s down to UT, Baylor, and Michigan, with a visit to Austin scheduled for July 30. He wants to announce the next day. With his mother joining him for this ATX trip, it could be the final blessing he’s looking for.

About the impending move to the SEC?

“That would really be something,” said Patton.

LB Sebastian Cheeks, Township (Evanston, IL) - 2022: One of the top inside linebackers for this cycle is close to a decision.

Texas, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Oregon fill out his final five, but IT hears UNC holds the cards today.

Cheeks hasn’t told any staffers of his intentions yet, but a source close to Cheeks says Mack Brown and the Tar Heels have some confidence going into Cheeks' announcement on July 28.

LB Lander Barton, Brighton (Salt Lake City, UT) - 2022: The 6-foot-4, 215-pound four-star linebacker has set September 24 as his Texas official visit date. With 15 offers including LSU, Notre Dame, and Oregon, Barton stays close to the UT staff, particularly Jeff Choate.

Utah is viewed as the leader here, and with Cheeks unlikely for Texas or Michigan right now, Barton becomes the focus for Jim Harbaugh. If Texas takes Patton, numbers will probably start to matter at the position moving forward in the 2022 class.

CB Denver Harris, Galena Park North Shore (Houston, TX) - 2022: IT spoke with multiple people close to Harris at North Shore early in the week, and every one of them believes Alabama holds the lead for the five-star cornerback. Does that mean they will be correct? If Harris makes a decision based on football only, IT believes Alabama is the heavy favorite. The recruiting of the mom, dad and older brother are all very important for Texas. With a late September decision likely, the Longhorns have time to show a product on the field, and the potential news of a move to the SEC could make a major impact.

DB Bryce Anderson, West Brook (Beaumont, TX) - 2022: The news of the potential move to the SEC is not lost on Anderson. Texas continues to be the slight favorite over Texas A&M headed into the July 30 and 31 unofficial visits to Austin and College Station. The decommitment of Jaylon Guilbeau is not a deal breaker for Texas and Anderson.

DB Jaylon Guilbeau, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX) - 2022: Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had a Zoom call with Guilbeau and family the night the 6-foot, 180-pound defender decommitted. Word from a source is Sarkisian didn’t put the hard sell on Guilbeau. IT believes Texas was fine if Guilbeau wanted to be part of the class, but wasn’t considered a prospect that was must-keep. TCU head coach Gary Patterson is a quality evaluator of defensive backs, so we shall see if that was the right call in the coming years. Texas A&M is also in the mix, but Guilbeau has the best relationships with the TCU staff.

HOOPS

There was an accurate report put out this week about four-star big man and Texas target Yohan Traore (Prolific Prep, CA) being offered a multi-year deal for $1 million by the Overtime Elite league. IT can say this - Traore is not taking the deal.

Here is where the Overtime Elite league is different than the NBA affiliated G-League; the Overtime Elite league isn’t giving a guaranteed contract. They are asking high school kids to leave high school and head to their league for player development. But they can release the player at any point without further financial obligation. That is why it’s crucial for these kids to have great people around them to navigate this new business world these athletes are about to enter into.

As far as Traore’s recruitment, Texas is pushing. Tennessee is right there according to a source. UCLA, USC, Oregon, Kansas and others are in the mix.

On to five-star SG Keyonte George (iSchool Academy). IT reported earlier in the week that the 6-foot-4 guard is very likely to announce a decision in late August or early September. George continues to maintain he intends to play college basketball for a year before heading off to the NBA. George sees how Cade Cunningham built his brand in college for a year, and there is feeling from George and his circle that the NIL money he will make in college for a year could come close to matching a G-League deal. Texas continues to be the favorite over Baylor with Kansas and Oklahoma State on the outside looking in.

Wow on that Perkins news. Doesn't sound great on Denver Harris though

Four-star DL Quency Wiggins plans to visit Texas next week

Spoiler

Four-star DL Quency Wiggins plans to visit Texas next week

Mike Roach

The biggest losers in Texas and Oklahoma's move to the SEC

Texas will begin hosting players on campus once again tomorrow.

The dead period lifts for a short timeframe, and schools want to maximize those visits before they head into fall camp. Texas has an event planned July 30 with some big names, and another big one intends to swing through Austin this week.

Four-star Baton Rouge (LA.) Madison Prep Academy defensive end Quency Wiggins notified Horns247 that he would make a trip to Texas sometime this week. While he didn't have an exact date in mind, Wiggins said he will be on campus. The Longhorns have been pushing to get into the race for the mammoth edge rusher, and they will be hosting him for an unofficial visit before he returns in the fall officially.

Alabama and LSU seem to have the most momentum in this recruitment, but Texas will try to make a statement once they have the opportunity to host him. Wiggins has been one of the fastest risers in the rankings over the spring making his debut in the Top247 last week coming in at No. 99 overall.

Wiggins originally planned to make several trips during the summer but ended up holding his official visits for the fall with a late decision in mind.

At 6-foot-6, 274 pounds, Wiggins is ranked as the No. 18 defensive lineman in the country and No. 7 overall prospect in Louisiana, according to 247Sports Composite.

Four-star WR Brenen Thompson to take official visit to Texas in fall

Nick Harris

Spoiler

Four-star WR Brenen Thompson to take official visit to Texas in fall

Nick Harris

With the season on the horizon, Texas looks to be targeting a game weekend to bring in one of its top targets.

Spearman (Texas) four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson will take his official visit the weekend of Sept. 18 when Texas will host Rice in the second home game of the 2021-22 season, he told Horns247 this evening. Thompson initially planned to use his two remaining officials to Clemson and Alabama, but now the two perennial playoff contenders will compete for the final one. In June, the 3A 200-meter state champion took official visits to Oklahoma State, Oregon and Texas A&M.

This will be Thompson's second visit to Texas after his unofficial trip in June for the big 2022 weekend. On his trip to Texas, Thompson was able to meet with most of the commit class and interact with the coaches one-on-one.

"It was great, I loved my time in Austin," Thompson said. "Great coaching staff, it was a good visit. We talked about the offense and I got to sit down and talk to Coach Sark. They want to use me like they did with (Jaylen) Waddle so that's definitely something they've been talking to me about. My favorite part was being around the coaching staff and seeing the coaching staff interact with each other and the players. It was a huge thing."

Thompson is one of Texas' top remaining targets as he sits high up on the Longhorns' receiver board. Texas has just one commit at receiver in the 2022 class with Lewisville (Texas) four-star Armani Winfield.

At 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Thompson is the No. 81 ranked player in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 9 wide receiver in the country and the No. 16 recruit from the state of Texas.

The problem is most of these schools are dead on arrival without Texas and ou. They could drag their feet finding a landing spot
Not by choice...any Big12 school AD sitting on their hands waiting to see how things shake out need to be fired yesterday. Everyone is furiously exploring options as we speak, at least 2 other schools will find spots for 2022, which means smooth sailing for us.

Dear Sark,
If this is indeed the last year in the Big 12, please beat the shit out of and score as much as possible on Fatterson and the frogs.  Is that to much to ask?
You need to copy the Big12 officiating crew on this, see if they intend to just irritate us a bit or go full '15 Okie lite and decide W/L this year...and also ask if they plan to do the same to blowU.

We will not play in the Big12 in 2022, any thoughts of that will be erased by the hosing we'll receive from Big12 zebras this season.

It's either independent or SEC in '22, my gut tells me SEC.

I would guess a lot of recruits in the Top 300 or so have all stopped announcing new officials or dropping dates for a commitment announcement all is a sudden.

I would go as far as to say I would not be shocked to see a much slower recruiting news cycle for the next 3 weeks or so until this gets sorted out.

Spoiler

The Texas Longhorns are headed to the SEC. With that out of the way, there is one massive question that will impact recruiting.

When will the move happen?

This question will need to be answered relatively quickly with many top targets in the 2022 class waiting to hear the outcome.

Enjoy this little recruiting beignet with your Sunday morning coffee.

1. QB Arch Manning, Isidore Newman (New Orleans, LA) - 2023:
One of the big questions surrounding Arch’s recruitment is will he really play in a conference other than the SEC? Now, Texas’ pitch is even more impactful. SEC, Steve Sarkisian QB development, Manning family business opportunities in Austin/Texas. Endless.

2. WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX) - 2022:
Stewart has given quotes, and been active on social media with the move of Texas to the SEC. A move in the 2022-23 season could well wrap up the five-star for Steve Sarkisian.

3. LB Harold Perkins (Cy Park) - 2022:
Perkins is a five-star prospect that doesn’t hesitate when asked which conference he would prefer to play in. With Texas ascending due to scheme pitch and his liking for Austin, a move in 2022-23 would make it tough on the competition.

4. DB Bryce Anderson (Beaumont West Brook) - 2022:
Much more than half of the recruiting pitch by Texas A&M vs. Texas is playing in the SEC vs the Big 12. The Aggies sell it to the prospect and parents throughout the process. Anderson is already a slight lean to Texas, and a quick move would help in a final push by Steve Sarkisian.

5. CB Denver Harris (North Shore) - 2022:
Back in late February, Harris was likely headed to the SEC. Since that time Texas has made up ground. The best way to beat out favorite Alabama is the move in 2022-23. With a late September decision likely, there is time here.

6. DT Bear Alexander (Fort Worth Brewer) - 2022:
This recruitment is all about the SEC. The former Georgia verbal is considered a heavy lean to Texas A&M over Alabama currently.

7. OL Kam Dewberry (Atascocita) - 2022:
While Dewberry certainly is fond of Ohio State, the chances of staying closer to home is higher. Texas A&M is making that same SEC pitch vs. Texas and Oklahoma. As is LSU.

8. DL Jaray Bledsoe (Marlin) - 2022:
Bledsoe likes the idea of playing in the SEC. It’s been sold hard by Texas A&M, Alabama and LSU during the process. The move would benefit Texas, and Oklahoma.

9. DT Aaron Bryant (Southaven, MS) - 2022:
This is a recruitment that is Texas vs. Texas A&M with Ole Miss back in the fight. If Bryant really is beginning to lean to Texas, a move to the SEC in 2022-23 could be the difference.

10. EDGE/DL Justice Finkley (Hewitt-Trussville, AL) - 2022:
Finkley has a final three of Alabama, Texas and Colorado. While academics are an important part of the recruiting equation for Finkley, a quick move to the SEC would certainly help the Longhorns.

Also impactful:

EDGE Derrick Brown (Texas High) and LB Jeremy Patton (Tenaha)
The competition is Baylor.

WR Shazz Preston (Saint James, LA) - 2022:
Texas is battling LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi State in this recruitment. So yes, the move would matter in the battle.

TE Jaleel Skinner (Greer, SC) - 2022:
This is a recruitment headed to the ACC if Alabama doesn’t beat out Clemson, Florida State and Miami. A Texas move to the SEC in 2022-23 would certainly help Jeff Banks’ pitch.

WR Brenen Thompson (Spearman) - 2022:
While Thompson’s recruitment is like the others with Texas battling only the SEC, it would certainly help the Longhorns pitch vs. Texas A&M down the stretch.

WR Jordan Hudson (Garland, TX) (SMU) - 2022:
Texas continues to pursue the SMU verbal. While Hudson is willing to be different, a Texas pitch of playing in the SEC wouldn’t hurt.

Hahaha, I don't know how I hadn't even considered this until now. Fuck every school, but especially aggy, who has used this as their primary negative recruiting tactic against us. It will be beautiful for that strategy to bite them in the ass with current recruits.

Some notes from the comments:

* They don't think the move happens any later than 2023

* Javien Toviano is a big fan of the move as well
