Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Its almost as if kids are fucking stupid and will believe anything anyone tells them. Texas has a bad record the past 10 years! In the past 10 years Texas has gone 74-52 while Aggy has gone 84-43 besides their magical season of losing to Alabama their best record was 9 years ago at 11-2 with a Heisman trophy winner and then followed it up with 8 years of  averaging 8.25 wins. They've won 3 bowl games in a row we've won 4. We won 10 games 3 years ago they won 10 games 9 years ago. We do nothing with highly ranked players they do nothing with highly ranked players. They had 4 players drafter we had 5 players drafted. Aggy has sucked just as much as we have yet no one cares because no one cares about Aggy and all their recruiting pitch amounts to is come play in the SEC.

And of aggy’s 10 win lead over that decade, more than 10 came against FCS schools while we played 0. They’ve accomplished nothing. We’ve accomplished nothing.

Really, the hill has never been more downhill for a Texas coach. Texas is in one of the largest college cities in the country that has zero professional presence. They have arguably the most valuable and recognized brand. They have one of the wealthiest alumni bases with an intense personal, emotional investment in the success of the football team. The NCAA no longer exists as an effective enforcement organization. There's almost no limit on transfers. There's no real limit on paying athletes. They're about to get out of the albatross of a conference they've been in (which was in large part of their own making).

I feel like this is being overlooked way too much on this board. If we win games and get NIL going, do people really think we won't be able to fill in gaps through the transfer portal? Imagine being an All American at a place like WVU, knowing you can transfer to somewhere like UT and instantly make 6 figures (see Tykee Smith to UGA). Free agency is upon us, and every player's contract is up every single year. As a neutral college football fan, it kinda sucks. As a UT fan, it's great for winning.

Good point.  If we get our shit together we’re good.  And with the portal, we can get really good, really fast

I agree, but feel like the "if" in "if we win games and get NIL going" looms large here.

I'm more bullish on the first with this staff, but I think we're going to need to make big strides in both in a short period of time to really raid the portal.

Announcing a date on the sec move should help, too.

Latest on 2022 Texas target Justice Finkley
Justin Wells

Justice Finkley, the 6-foot-2, 255-pound On3 four-star and Texas offer has had a busy summer.

With 30 offers in hand including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, and USC, the rising EDGE prospect from Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) hit the road in June to see the college sights.

He took an official (6/5) and unofficial visit (7/31) to Alabama, then hit Colorado on June 11th, Michigan on June 18th, and Texas on June 25th for official trips.

After those visits, he dropped a top 3 of Texas, Alabama, and Colorado. Finkley told IT he doesn’t have a commitment day yet, but his social media vibes indicate he might be getting closer.

Texas has done a masterful job of selling the university, academics, and the chance to build something special. With the impending move to the Southeastern Conference, Finkley is even more excited.

“I think Texas is a massive program so it would definitely change the dynamics of the SEC,” said Finkley. “(Academics) comes into my decision a good bit.”

Finkley has been instrumental for Hewitt-Trussville’s success with 146 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries over the last two seasons. He remains in contact with UT’s Bijan Robinson and Ray Thornton, and wants to hang out again if/when he returns to the Forty Acres.

Don’t look at mom for any answers here either. She’s waiting on the Under Armour All-American, just like us.

Finkley is the 190th ranked player in On3’s 2022 Football Player Rankings with a grade of 91.

SIAP - TFB, on Miller's trip to OU. (From someone on 247.)

Spoiler

"Obviously, Tyler Legacy RB Jamarion Miller has been the talk of the board over the last couple of days. Following his surprise visit to Norman to see the Sooners, the question about his commitment status rose significantly.

There was a lot to unpack during my trip to Tyler yesterday morning. First, I connected with a source close to Jamarion who said that while Texas had always been a big school in the eyes of Jamarion and his family, he always had a soft spot for Oklahoma and their RB production. Obviously, Jamarion’s brother, Damion, was previously committed to Texas yet was unable to make it to campus.

Miller told me this morning he wanted to check out the OU campus. He mentioned only having seen a couple of schools during his recruitment and wanted to essentially get a feel for the school. In my opinion, he was doing his due diligence as a recruit.

The notion of Miller potentially flipping to the Sooners was also shut down by Miller himself during my visit. He reiterated the visit was him doing his exhausting all possible avenues as a recruit. I was told Miller had been in contact with the Texas staff prior to the visit north as well.

Miller said he received an Oklahoma offer earlier in the year, though that has not been reported on the network sites, nor has Miller tweeted it. The pursuit was on from Demarco Murray and the Sooners.

On the Texas front, Miller told me he talks with Sarkisian, Drayton and Brandon Harris “very often.” Miller has not yet connected with Jaydon Blue just yet. He added he hopes to meet him soon."

SIAP...    (this guy is involved with recruits)

Texas adding Venric Mark to analyst role

ByMIKE ROACH Aug 6, 9:06 AM

Quote

An announcement was made this morning by the Texas staff that Venric Mark will be moving into a coaching role with the program.  Mark has been a recruiting assistant working in the personnel department since 2019, but his resume as a player is impressive.

A former running back and wide receiver at St. Pius X High School in Houston, Mark signed with Northwestern in 2010 where he saw playing time right off the bat. Mark was also a gifted returner and earned First Team All-American honors as a punt returner in 2012. A Doak Walker Award Semi-Finalist in 2012, Mark set several Northwestern records.

Mark decided to pursue his fifth year of eligibility back in the state at West Texas A&M before moving onto the professional leagues. After a stint in the CFL playing for the Ottawa RedBlacks, Mark played for the Cedar Rapids Titans of the Indoor Football League.

Once his on-field career ended, Mark returned to Northwestern from 2016-2018 working as a recruiting assistant and a strength and conditioning assistant.  Mark found his way to Texas in an off-field role in 2019. His connections in Houston along with some exposure in the Midwest from his college days have made him a valued member of the staff.

Sources indicate that Mark will be working as an assistant coach on the defensive side of the ball while also retaining his role helping to recruit prospects to Texas.

Mark's duties have included hosting recruits while on campus and assisting coaches in communication with those prospects.  Mark was seen escorting Harold Perkins and his family while on campus, and he's also been involved with Shazz Preston and Denver Harris.

In the past, Mark also worked with Jerrin Thompson, Kelvontay Dixon, Ishmael Ibraheem and many others.

Mark is a holdover from Tom Herman's staff, but like several others, he stuck around under Steve Sarkisian and Director of Player Personnel Billy Glasscock.  As Sarkisian has said in the past, he's working to build a personnel department that matches what the NFL does in its scouting office, and assistants like Mark are a vital piece of that puzzle.

Mark will be working with defensive backs and assisting coaches Blake Gideon and Terry Joseph.

I'd argue it was steeper in 1957 when OU had Bud Wilkinson, A&M had Bear Bryant. And while we didn't realize it at the time, Arkansas was about to hire Frank Broyles.

I'd for sure say it was steeper in 1998. Texas had had some limited success, but football had successfully been deemphasized (by the way, some of the same forces are still at work within the athletic department to this day). People who weren't around prior to Mack Brown have no real concept of how apathetic the powers that be were about football, including the athletic department itself. I do not consider myself a huge Mack Brown fan, but almost as important as that 2005 season (and nothing will ever top that for me) was him making it apparent almost immediately after being hired how valuable having football front and center was to UT as a whole.

What's going on with NIL currently (or not going on) is criminal towards UT's ability to compete in football in the future. But at least the head of the BOR, the president, and the athletic director consider winning in football important enough that they fired a 7-3 coach coming off a blowout win in the Alamo Bowl mostly because his recruiting had fallen off a cliff. And through some impressive maneuvering, they have us on the brink of getting out of the Big 12, which absolutely had to happen.

I have no doubt that at some point NIL will be delivering impressive results for Texas athletes, because the competitive pressures are too immense. But the longer that takes to get going, the farther behind Texas is going to be. If the NIL part can be answered, even if it's done outside the athletic department, it makes the head coach job at Texas a lot more competitive, regardless of who it is.

Really, the hill has never been more downhill for a Texas coach. Texas is in one of the largest college cities in the country that has zero professional presence. They have arguably the most valuable and recognized brand. They have one of the wealthiest alumni bases with an intense personal, emotional investment in the success of the football team. They're about to get out of the albatross of a conference they've been in (which was in large part of their own making).

There's no excuses left. Either you want to compete among a select few programs who can afford the uncapped payroll for fielding an elite football or men's basketball team or you want to drop out and play in the Championship League instead. There's truly no other program in the country better situated for the new wild wild west of college sports. I am not sympathetic to any kind of bullshit about what other programs can offer. I've been as righteous about the white hat approach that I feel like UT has embodied in many ways as anyone. But the white hat approach no longer exists.

So no. The hill being steeper is a load of crap. That's not on you, WinningIsHard, because you make good points. It's simply not the correct mindset. It's focusing on how other programs have performed vis a vis Texas, which is fair to a degree. But what it's really about is the incredible incompetence surrounding the football program since 2009 (really before, when Mack Brown decided he had college football all figured out and didn't have to work so hard any more), and how much we've handcuffed ourselves in the name of trying to do it cleanly. Well, there is no dirty, and there is no clean any more. There's only paying players what you're willing to as a collective, managing to get a head coach who can win at the highest levels, and then keeping that coach.

How does Texas have people on staff that deemphasize football in a state where football is religion?

Simple actually.  In the end of the Royal era Coach Royal didn't project the image the university wanted.  Akers was hired in part because he looked like he stepped out of a Neiman Marcus catalog compared to Royal.

When the Akers era ended Royal tabbed McWilliams and that blew up in our face and not only did football not perform, it embarrassed the University with abysmal graduation rates and drug/crime scandals.

The powers that be that consider UT to be pursuing ivy league status were terrified we were going to become a football factory. So football was deemphasized by hiring Mackovic, Royal was ostracized/exiled/put out to pasture, telling high school coaches they weren't welcome, refusing to host high school playoff games, and promoting football as a place to be seen rather than the outcome of the game.  And the donations kept coming in so no one cared.....

Chris Plonsky believes in equality for female athletes. I assume she hates that football is king at Texas and has successfully damaged our efforts. She's a bitch.

I'm for equality as well. just as soon as any womens sport approaches the $$ football (or basketball) brings in (beach VB anyone? ) they should get the best of everything..including venue to play in.

Nope, she doesnt want equality, she wants equity. Very different thing.

I don't know if I buy this if only because the timeline doesn't match up. Look at the 3 coaches post-DKR. Akers, McWilliams and Mackovic. The moment the program slid beyond their capability, they were fired. We fired Fred Akers after his first losing season, we fired McWilliams the season after the "Shock the World" tour and we fired Mackovic the season after "Roll Left." Does that should like a lethargic/complacent athletic department that didn't care or one that just couldn't get it right?

I think the explanation is that we simply hired 3 bad coaches in a row and Jackie Sherrill made us pay for it. We've been dog shit since 2010, doesn't mean that we don't care, but the Mack Brown era ended with a thud, Charlie was a glorified DC and TH was more asshole than Mensa. If you hire the right coaches, you will get the right results. If you don't, it makes it very hard, even at a place like Texas.

The jury is out on Sark, but he should be given every opportunity to succeed/fail and if he does fail, then we just throw him the gutter and go find another.

Mackovic never should have been hired. A 6-5 coach at Illinois is not a good candidate for Texas Football.

And aggy, we all know Jackie Sherrill cheated his ass off, which is why he was a “winner.” One of the oldest aggy turditions. Fuck yourself.

And absolutely Sherrill cheated, so? Everybody cheats, we just didn't do as good a job of it. We're about to enter a conference whose acronym is "See Everybody Cheats," so now is not the time to find religion on cheating. We need to do whatever it takes, just like everybody else, and leave the ethics for the classroom.

How is this piece of shit still posting with -115 rep?

Do you have anything intelligent to say or not? Do you really think we weren't cheating in the 80s? Or 90s? Or at any point in our history? We had aggressively mediocre to poor coaching from 5 of our last 7 head coaches (pre-Sark) and that, more than anything else, is why we've had mediocre to poor results.

Look at Ohio State as a counter example. Beginning with Woody Hayes through Ryan Day, they've made only one mediocre hire - Earl Bruce. That's an absolutely amazing run of great hires and it's exactly why they are a dominant program in college football. Hopefully, Sark will be our Ryan Day and we can win big moving forward. I hate to say it's just that simple but it kinda is just that simple.

McWilliams was fired to save him from dying on the sideline. The man was so stressed and overwhelmed that he was turning himself into a pretzel during the game. Everyone could see it.

I thought he was fired by DeLoss when he refused to make staff changes after the 5-6 1991 season.

Always a good call.  Just don’t say the same thing about Ewers…..that strikes a nerve with some folks.

Lol you’re such a pussy. Don’t compare the Brock’s to Ewers just because you want the kid to fail for picking the guaranteed option. In reality which one of us stupid fucks would pick Herman/hand over Saban/flood???? There’s only one Brock who is an asshole and I hope he regrets being a piece of shit.

Complaining about cheating is very dumb. We should also cheat and cheat better, if by “cheat” you mean remunerate the benefits of the kids labor (or potential labor) to them in exchange for them playing for Texas. We won’t win shit until we stop being high and mighty about this bullshit.
