Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

How reliable is Fong?

He usually only puts a CB in if he hears pretty strong information that a kid is going to commit.

It can be wrong (Anderson was pretty much dead set on aggy when he decommitted from LSU, but changed his mind. Wilson tried to commit to Texas but the staff didn't want him), but it means he's heard something fairly serious.

I have yet to see film or anything on Burton in like a year. Has he been hurt?

With that WR ranking you would think locally we would see Garrett Wilson like headlines. Hell Evan Stewart has been a household name for about a year or so.

Odd he hasn't dropped at all.

What I'd really like is for a way to get Roach to attend the Surly Sprint Off and Fair on Sept. 4th, specifically so that weeble-wobble of a man can take part in a hula-hooping contest. I don't care if his competition is Air as long as I'm there to witness it and have it entered into surly record.

BTW I'm laughing at that quoted tweet from Harold Perkins with the Hookem emoji..  it was about 3 weeks ago where he gave the super excited tweet of "Texas re-offered"..  Calculator.

Since it was erased from time, what confidence level was fong’s hullaby to Texas cb?  Trying to parse this as a differentiator between when he knows something and when he assumes something- specifically about Anderson currently but also going forward.  Probably helps that aggy is involved with Anderson more-so than hullaby?

Anderson mentioned in an interview that Joseph had said something to that effect. I think he'll land at Safety but we'll see.

This is an example of what we've all been wanting from our coaches for years; to wit, tell them/let them think what they want and let the play determine their best position.  Thankfully we finally seem to have that staff.

Nick Harris: Where Texas stands with multiple prospects in new Top247 rankings update

Quote

On Wednesday, 247Sports released a major rankings update for the class of 2022, its first since early December of 2020, as the approaching senior class enters their final high school offseason. The new update saw some major shake-ups with in-state prospects and Texas targets as multiple recruits entered the rankings for the first time while others saw big jumps. In all, 19 prospects found their way into the Top247 ranking after coming up short in the most recent rankings update.

The rankings update saw multiple Texas targets and commits fall in the Top247 as the Texas recruiting board continues to show promise with highly-rated prospects across the country that have shown legitimate early interest in the Longhorns. 26 prospects that have either committed to Texas or are a mid-to-high level priority for the Longhorns made it into the ranking, as the new Texas staff continues to add to that number with expanding relationships with prospects across the country.

In honor of rankings day, let's take a small dive into each of those recruitments to see where the Longhorns stand with the highest ranked prospects in the country while also taking a look at where the Texas commits also sit in the rankings update.

Omari Abor, Strong-Side Defensive End, Duncanville

One of the more gifted defensive linemen to come through the state of Texas, Omari Abor saw a small jump near the top of the rankings from No. 19 to No. 12 overall. Abor kept a 95 rating. In his recruitment, Abor remains relatively open with Ohio State and Oklahoma holding the top positioning. At best, Texas sits as a distant third in this recruitment.

Kevin Coleman, Wide Receiver, St. Louis (Mo.) St. Mary's

With the hiring of Steve Sarkisian and his staff, Coleman quickly became a high priority target of the Longhorns in recent months. In the rankings, he saw a small jump from No. 18 to No. 16 overall while keeping a 95 rating. This recruitment will continue to be crowded with some of the biggest programs in the country going after Coleman, but expect Texas to continue be in the race as time goes on. Working in the Longhorns' favor is Coleman's growing relationships with Texas commits Jaydon Blue and Jaylon Guilbeau as they have all played alongside each other this spring for FAST Houston.

Harold Perkins, Outside Linebacker, Cypress Park

Perkins remains one of the top prizes not only Texas, but the entire country as he jumps from No. 30 overall to No. 18 while keeping his 95 rating. Perkins is in no rush to close his recruitment as he plans to wait until after the early signing period to make his decision, but Texas is in the mix along with Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Oregon, TCU, USC, LSU and others. There is no clear frontrunner at this point, but the Aggies do hold one Crystal Ball Prediction.

Denver Harris, Cornerback, North Shore

Harris remains one of the best cornerback prospects in the country as he jumps from No. 24 to No. 20 overall. The North Shore product recently released a top four of Texas, Texas A&M, LSU and Alabama as his recruitment begins to pick up steam ahead of a busy spring. The Longhorns stand in a good position, but either of his top four options could realistically walk away with a commitment before it's over with.

Devon Campbell, Offensive Guard, Arlington Bowie

Campbell didn't see any movement in the latest rankings update, which can sometimes be a pretty good thing, especially when you're ranked as high as Campbell is (No. 22 overall). Campbell is another prospect that will take his time with the recruiting process, but Texas has held a lead here for the majority of his recruitment. As he closes in on his top schools, we will begin to see which schools will pose the biggest threat to the Longhorns landing a commitment from one of the more elite offensive linemen in the country. Expect LSU and Alabama to give strong pushes.

Kelvin Banks, Offensive Guard, Humble Summer Creek

Another elite offensive lineman within the state borders, Kelvin Banks has emerged as one of the top targets on the Texas board regardless of position. Banks made a small jump in the rankings update from No. 26 to No. 24 overall while keeping a 95 rating. As big name programs continue to fly into his recruitment, Texas remains in the race as his relationship with the coaching staff continues to drive his interest in the Longhorns. Texas A&M remains the biggest threat with LSU, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma in the mix.

Jaydon Blue, Running Back, Klein Cain

Texas fans can certainly rejoice at the fact that Longhorns commit Jaydon Blue is now the No. 1 running back in the country after jumping in the rankings from No. 70 to No. 32. Blue had one of the strongest junior seasons in the country at the running back position and it has now been awarded with the top spot in his position group in the nation. He also saw his rating jump from a 93 to a 95. If the ranking holds through the end of the cycle, Blue would be the second top running back to sign with Texas in three years after the Longhorns signed Bijan Robinson in 2020.

Evan Stewart, Wide Receiver, Frisco Liberty

Despite falling one spot from No. 36 to No. 37 overall, newest Texas commit Evan Stewart saw his rating jump from 93 to 95 as he remains one of the most electric pass catchers in the country. As the 7-on-7 season has swung into full gear, Stewart has continued to show his big play ability with elite speed that can get over the top of just about any defense at the high school level.

Kamari Wilson, Safety, IMG Academy (Fla.)

Despite dropping two spots from No. 39 to No. 41 in the rankings, Wilson saw his rating bump from a 94 to a 95 as he continues to remain among the best defensive backs in the nation. Miami has made a strong push in his recruitment, but with Texas recruiting the safety position harder than usual in the 2022 cycle, expect the Longhorns to be in this race until the end. Alabama and Florida also stand as legitimate contenders for one of the Sunshine State's best.

C.J. Williams, Wide Receiver, Mater Dei (Calif.)

Texas has come from the back of the pack to near the top with California receiver C.J. Williams because of a strong push from Steve Sarkisian and his relationship with Texas commit Maalik Murphy. Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame join Texas at the top as it continues to be a crowded race. With ample time left in the recruitment, the Longhorns could certainly pull off a commitment, but I don't see them as the leader at this point.

Bryce Anderson, Safety, Beaumont West Brook

Anderson saw one of the biggest rises in the state of Texas in the latest rankings update as he jumped from No. 85 to No. 57 overall after a bump in his rating from 93 to 94. Texas has soared into the lead in this recruitment after Texas A&M has seemed to capture the early momentum following his decommitment from LSU. With a commitment expected in the next couple of months, the Longhorns continue to trend in the right direction for one of the state's best at the position.

Bryan Allen Jr., Safety, Aledo

Another safety prospect that recently decommitted from LSU, Allen saw a small slide from No. 54 to No. 58 overall while keeping a 94 rating. With a second commitment expected soon, Texas continues to hold strong positioning with Oklahoma and Alabama providing the biggest threats. With potential at the cornerback position, Allen remains one of the more versatile defensive backs in the country.

Maalik Murphy, Quarterback, Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra

After missing out on a high school football season during the fall in the state of California, positives can certainly be drawn from Maalik Murphy remaining at the No. 63 position overall in the country in the latest rankings update. After a strong performance this past weekend at Pylon Bullhead City, Murphy showed once again that he has a skillset that matches the star-power of just about every other signal caller in the country.

Jaylon Guilbeau, Cornerback, Port Arthur Memorial

The longest-standing Texas commit in the 2022 class, Jaylon Guilbeau looked around after the firing of Tom Herman and his staff, but Guilbeau has since locked it back in with the Longhorns and is looking forward to building one of the top classes in the nation. In the rankings, Guilbeau saw a small slide from No. 62 to No. 66 while keeping a 94 rating.

Larry Turner-Gooden, Athlete, Playa Del Rey (Calif.) St. Bernard

Turner-Gooden has made some noise on the west coast as one of the more versatile prospects in the country, but his ceiling is probably highest at safety. In the rankings, he slid from No. 68 to No. 70 but saw his rating jump from 93 to 94. Texas remains in a solid position with USC and Arizona State. The Longhorns are a legitimate contender in this race and will push behind a strong effort from multiple coaches on staff.

Niuafe Tuihalamaka, Inside Linebacker, Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany

With a top five coming soon from one of the top defenders in the state of California, Texas has put themselves in a solid position to be in that final grouping. After decommitting from USC in January, Tuihalamaka has garnered interest from a good number of big name programs, but the Longhorns along with Stanford and Notre Dame have made their way to the top. He saw a small slide from No. 79 to No. 83 in the rankings but saw his rating jump from 93 to 94.

Cade Klubnik, Quarterback, Austin Westlake

Since the major rankings update for the class of 2022 last March, Klubnik has consistently been placed among the state's best at the quarterback position, but his latest jump has him among the nation's best. Klubnik jumped from No. 220 to No. 99 overall after a ratings jump from a 90 to a 93. When Texas took the commitment of Maalik Murphy, their position in Klubnik's recruitment certainly took a hit but the Longhorns have remained in contact and are looking to add him to a two quarterback class. Auburn, North Carolina and Florida remain heavy contenders as he begins to look around nationally.

Chace Biddle, Safety, Garland

While Texas came into the calendar year with a lead in Biddle's recruitment, things have since shifted towards Oklahoma as Texas focuses on other safety targets. With Landon Hullaby committed to Oregon, it'll be notable to see if the Longhorns re-engage with Biddle down the line. In the rankings, Biddle slid from No. 102 to No. 106 while keeping a 93 rating.

Chris Marshall, Wide Receiver, Fort Bend Marshall

After just one season of playing high school football, Chris Marshall had the furthest jump into the rankings out of any prospect in Texas as he debuts at No. 118 overall. Marshall possesses a big frame and a high catch radius that has caught the eye of schools and evaluators alike. At best, Texas sits at third in this recruitment behind Texas A&M and USC, but with a commitment not expected any time soon and a strong push already from wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, Marshall remains a prospect to watch on the board.

Armani Winfield, Wide Receiver, Lewisville

Consistently one of the best receivers in the state of Texas, Armani Winfield has had a strong start to the 7-on-7 season playing with various teams across the country, including the west coast-based Premium squad headlined by Maalik Murphy. In the rankings, Winfield slid from No. 115 to No. 127 while holding onto a 92 rating.

Jamarion Miller, Running Back, Tyler Legacy

After a huge junior season that saw Miller put up some eye-boggling stat lines, he has now seen his ranking jump from No. 137 to No. 131 while his rating jumped from 91 to 92. Texas remains in a good spot for one of the top running backs in the country but as time goes on, more schools begin to make their pitches and enter themselves into the equation. If Oklahoma offers, this one could become a Red River battle with Baylor and Florida also contending.

Austin Jordan, Safety, Denton Ryan

Now categorized as a safety by 247Sports, Austin Jordan slid from No. 86 to No. 152 in the rankings while seeing his rating drop from 93 to 92. Texas hasn't put their foot on the gas in this recruitment and it seems to be a smart decision with Jordan looking out-of-state. Ohio State has the best chance at landing a commitment if they push with Oklahoma also entering the mix as a contender.

Tavorus Jones, Running Back, El Paso Burges

Texas has kept a solid relationship with Tavorus Jones since they became the first school to offer him last spring. Since then, he has seen his ranking jump to No. 154 overall with the latest update also bumping his rating from a 91 to a 92. Schools out west serve as the stiffest competition with programs like Utah and USC, but if Oregon were to offer, this recruitment would definitely have a clear front-runner. Penn State also remains in the mix.

Brenen Thompson, Athlete, Spearman

Hailing from the Texas Panhandle, Brenen Thompson saw a small slide from No. 150 to No. 166 while his rating jumped from a 91 to a 92. Steve Sarkisian and Andre Coleman have both made a big push for one of the state's fastest prospects as the Longhorns are in a top grouping with Clemson, Alabama and Texas A&M. Oklahoma had early momentum in this recruitment, but with the Sooners receiver numbers in 2022 all but capped, Thompson has been led into other directions.

Kam Dewberry, Offensive Tackle, Humble Atascocita

Going back to the time he was offered by the previous Texas staff, Dewberry has remained an option in 2022 for Texas, but since Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood have taken over this recruitment, the Longhorns have since put themselves in legitimate contention. The Longhorns sit among the top of a group that includes Texas A&M, Alabama, Oklahoma and LSU. In the rankings, he saw a small slide from No. 209 to No. 216 while holding onto a 90 rating.

Cristian Driver, Safety, Argyle Liberty Christian

With the safety recruiting board expanding after Landon Hullaby's commitment to Oregon, Cristian Driver has cemented his spot at the table as an option for Texas at the safety position after being recruited by the Longhorns as a wide receiver for most of his recruitment. It's a crowded race, but Texas is near the top and within striking range if the staff pushes. In the rankings, he slid from No. 235 to No. 240 overall while holding onto a 90 rating.

The key to that approach is that we need to recruit like the worst case scenario plays out (Allen is not a cornerback). They need to land Harris and find another guy who cleanly projects to corner.

Blue should see a 5 star by the time this is all done.

LJ would have been nice to get but Blue is just as or more dynamic. Drayton continues to slay dragons.

Nice to see someone say something good about Drayton. He only brought in the best RB we've had since Jamall and turned a backup QB into one of the top five. "But Ingram is inconsistent, so he sucks and he's lazy." Ok.

7, I would imagine he and almost all of the 9.95ers consider Hullaby's recruitment an anomaly though and they aren't thinking "WOW, WE WERE WRONG ON THIS, NOW WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR WHOLE PROCESS"

Yeah but it may make me change how concretely i view a fong cb. Especially if he gets to erase it instead of taking the hit to his percentage.

Good lord, texi. I was reading through and thought you'd seen something substantive somewhere and hadn't posted it. FWIW, Harris signs with Texas if NSD is today. They lead by more than what people are willing to say, for whatever reason. It's odd and worth keeping an eye on.

9.95ers are completely in the dark with Hullaby. Nobody knows what happened.

They know what happened. He chose Oregon. They weren't expecting it, nor was anyone else. He basically woke up and decided, fuck it, I want to play somewhere else. Allegedly there was nothing nefarious or complex with it.

Beyond Harris and Hullaby, the theme of the last few pages seems to be: "DB - who and how many and where will they play?"

Allen and Anderson may be fast enough to play CB but they're safeties at the next level. They'll fit into the safety spots on the depth chart by the end of camp in their first year unless one of them just fucking shocks a staff.

Harris, Guilbeau, Anderson, Allen, ?? & Hyphen would be a pretty fucking stout haul of 6. There are some pure safety takes that are all pretty similar, so I'm assuming at some point, when they're comfortable with their grip on overall numbers with the roster and this class, they'll decide whether they're taking 5 or 6. If they take 6, they either have to decide that they need another CB or they may just push 1 of the 3 or 4 safeties they like besides the guys I just named, and the first one to make the commitment comes on board.

Hyphen works not only in name but 3 DB position flexibility, potentially. Harris and Guilbeau are true CBs. Guibeau isn't a guy for an island, but everyone thinks he's a take. Anderson and Allen are both pretty fucking flexible, but you want those guys at S.

Brooks is a weird one. You'd think a Bama priority target would get serious consideration. But they put Weigman above Simpson so who knows anymore.

Where is the information coming from that Allen wants to play corner? To my knowledge he has never played corner.  Played QB in middle school, some WR in 7 on 7, and safety in high school.

Best I can tell, Anderson made mention of it in an interview, and the board has consistently confused him with Allen to create a new narrative.

cypress has usually been a pipeline to A&M in past recruitments though
