Damn, Sydney. I’m all for the hate, but wishing the whiskey dick version of needle dick on family members just seems cruel. Those family members already have to live with the ignominy of being related to these dipshits. Isn’t that enough punishment for them?

I'm not convinced you know what "equate" means.

Mike Roach:  Thoughts on Texas targets from weekend DFW training session (2022 recruits)

Spoiler

Thoughts on Texas targets from weekend DFW training session

MikeRoach

— Horns247 was on the scene for a DB/WR camp in Plano today put on by Margin Hooks and Flight Skillz. The two well-known DFW trainers put on a skill sharpening camp one week before the Under Armour camp comes to Dallas. Several Texas commits and offers were on the field and several targets are emerging as names to know.

— The work Evan Stewart has been putting in since committing to Texas is on another level. He's been killing it on the track as usual and absolutely obliterating the 7v7 scene. He's gaining noticeable size up top and playing with a lot more aggression and confidence as a receiver. In my opinion, he's starting to emerge as a serious candidate to be ranked as the top wide receiver in the nation. Personally, he'd be the top guy in the state for me because he seems to check all of the boxes. He shows elite speed, incredible leaping ability and insane body control. I truly feel Texas landed one of the best weapons in the entire country when he committed.

— Armani Winfield doesn't quite have the flash of Stewart, but he does so many things well from a route running perspective. His ability to separate at the top of the route and create some space is what sets him apart from others. Winfield's big frame and long arms also provide him with a tremendous catch radius. Winfield has been a known commodity for so long that he sometimes is forgotten when talking about the best receivers in the state, but he has a skillset that could contribute early when he gets to college.

(CJ Vogel) Sunday Notebook | Flight/Hooks Training Session

Spoiler

I was up in Plano this afternoon for a workout session between Coach Flight’s DB’s and WR coach Margin Hooks’ wide receivers. The joint workout allowed for a very impressive one-on-one session from which I have some notes to share.

*** Texas commit Evan Stewart was in attendance and pulled off one of the crazier catches of the day.

Stewart told me afterwards the he was at about 35% after a busy week of workouts, track and training. So if that is 35%….

*** Texas had another commit in the fold with Lewisville’s Armani Winfield. I really like Winfield’s game. He was dominant once again despite six 7-on-7 games in the past two days.

Gaining noticeable size up top?  I thought that only had one connotation.

Ive missed a lot of the conversation about Duncanville but I will say that any insinuation that Texas is "shut out" of that school is pretty much bullshit. Chris Gilbert is a South Dallas guy and Coach Samples is The Godfather of South Dallas us having Gilbert in such a prominent role means that we will get those types of kids. Samples is like a father to Coach G, so yeah that narrative is garbage just sounds like they are tryna slander Herman more, but take the idea that Texas is down at Duncanville with a Mount Everest sized grain of salt.

Horns 247 / Mike Roach / The Stampede: A fresh look at the Texas recruiting board

Spoiler

The Stampede: A fresh look at the Texas recruiting board
MIKE ROACH

It's been a little over two months since Steve Sarkisian was hired at Texas and the Longhorn staff has been hard at work evaluating prospects and making offers.  With those offers come clues to how the board can shape up and what each position could look like from an archetype perspective.

The current class is working through a board that includes offers from the old staff, but it's also becoming more clear which prospects they are prioritizing more at the moment.

So what are the Texas coaches looking for and which prospects are they prioritizing the most in the 2022 class?  In this week's episode of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we take a look at the board to see what the staff is looking for and which players they are prioritizing most.

QUARTERBACK

Offers: 4

Commits: (1) Maalik Murphy

Expected numbers: 1-2

The Position: Sarkisian said on multiple occasions that he favors passers over dual-threat guys. In fact, Sark said during an offensive clinic that he prefers his quarterbacks protect themselves and not run as part of the game plan. That doesn’t mean his guys don’t need to be athletic or have quick feet. The four quarterbacks Texas offered in 2022 show some dual-threat ability, but more importantly, they show the ability to move within the pocket and extend plays.

Targets: With Cade Klubnik off the board, Texas will need to start from the beginning if they choose to go after a second quarterback from this class. The Longhorns have been keeping tabs on players like Nick Evers, but they might be alright just sticking with one player at the position, especially if the recruitment of a second would threaten to chase off Murphy.

RUNNING BACK
Offers: 12

Commits: (1) Jaydon Blue

Expected numbers: 1-2

The Position: Going forward, expect pass-catching ability to rank high on the checklist of needs. Sarkisian mentioned in an offensive clinic that the running back is the player on the field covered least by opposing defenses, and he used the backs quite a bit while at Alabama. Like every offensive skill position on this offense, quickness and speed will be placed at a premium. But, each time they take more than one back, the staff will look for compatibility between both pieces to make sure they are maximizing fit.

Targets: It seems like Texas slowed the process after getting its top priority in Blue, and the focus is on finding the right fit to go with him. In state, that probably comes down to Tavorus Jones or Jamarion Miller, but out of state targets like Terrance Gibbs, TreVonte Citizen, Jovantae Barnes and Kaytron Allen are also in consideration. The in-state targets are most likely to get the second spot, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Texas just stuck with Blue.

WIDE RECEIVER

Offers: 22

Commits: (2) Evan Stewart, Armani Winfield

Expected numbers: 4-5

The Position: While the previous staff loved overwhelming size, the current staff is prioritizing short-area quickness and speed to make plays after the catch. Armani Winfield is thought of as one of the best deep threats in the state while Evan Stewart is arguably the best athlete in the country. While at Alabama, the Crimson Tide certainly had a type at the position, and speed is the biggest question being asked of potential recruits. In fact, Texas recently held back on sending some offers at the position while waiting for more verified speed times.

Targets: Texas will likely take two more or expand to three if that player has positional versatility. Kevin Coleman, Tetairoa McMillan, Brenen Thompson, C.J. Williams, Shazz Preston, Jordan Hudson and Chris Marshall appear to be the biggest priorities at the moment. Of that group, I could see Texas landing Coleman and one of Hudson or Marshall. That said, I’ve heard recently that Texas seems to be slowing down at that position as they figure out how they want to finish this group in the 2022 class.

TIGHT END
Offers: 6

Commits: (0)

Expected numbers: 1-2

The Position: Jeff Banks took runs at a couple of in-state options, but he’s been focused on taking shots at some out-of-state national prospects. Blocking will be necessary but an emphasis will be placed on pass-catching and exploiting mismatches. Sarkisian’s offense probes for weakness on defense and seeks to put defenders in conflict, and finding versatile threats at the tight end position can certainly do that.

Targets: Texas is trying to stay in it for players like Holden Staes and Jaleel Skinner, but it’s likely they will need to look elsewhere. Jeff Banks has been circling back to in-state prospects with some promise like Carrollton Creekview’s Sean Sallis. It’s likely that this is one position where more targets will emerge during the spring or the summer camp season if it’s allowed to happen. I can’t see Texas taking a second at this position if they don’t’ find someone they want, but they could if they can locate the right fit.

OFFENSIVE LINE

OL Devon Campbell (Photo: Collin Kennedy, 247Sports)
Offers: 21

Commits: (0)

Expected numbers: 4-5

The Position: It seems like the previous staff never found a real identity up front so it was tough to pin down what exactly they were looking for. It isn’t quite clear what Texas is looking for up front right now, but Kyle Flood is far more comfortable recruiting bigger bodies at the position rather than growing them. Tackles will need to be athletic enough to stop speed rushers in the Big 12 while the interior players are asked to be maulers. This is one of the positions where we are still learning about when it comes to the archetype of player the staff wants to recruit.

Targets: The in-state group of players are all high on the priority list, but an overwhelming number of guard bodies could force Texas to look outside of the state borders for tackle bodies. Kelvin Banks was thought of as a tackle, but there is some concern he would be forced to play guard at the next level. On the flipside, Cole Hutson is still growing and might eventually work his way into a tackle frame. The Longhorns could conceivably win over Banks, Kam Dewberry, Devon Campbell, Connor Robertson, Cole Hutson or Neto Umeozulu, and they’re in the race for out of state targets like Malik Agbo, Earnest Greene and Jacob Sexton.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Offers: 29

Commits: (0)

Expected numbers: 5-6

The Position: From the early offers we’ve seen from this staff, the Longhorns are looking for a mix of big interior bodies who can provide a push in the pass rushing departments while finding defensive end bodies who can set the edge and rush the passer. Versatility is key as these players might be asked to move inside or spin outside depending on the situation. While tackles will look more traditional, ends will need to have some special skills that could play as a 4i, wide 9 or stand up rusher.

Targets: For the interior, Kristopher Ross seems to be the main target and is leaning toward the Longhorns for his upcoming commitment. Bremond’s Jaray Bledsoe and out of state prospects like Kaleb Artis, Domonique Orange, and Anthony Lucas. Edge prospects include Ernest Cooper, Zac Swanson, Omari Abor, Derrick Brown and DJ Wesolak. The state isn’t as deep at the defensive line position as usual, so Texas will have to find some wins out of state.

LINEBACKER

2022 LB Trevell Johnson (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)
Offers: 10

Commits: (1) Trevell Johnson

Expected numbers: 3-4

The Position: Interior linebackers will need to be able to plug run lanes while also playing sideline to sideline. In the Big 12, defenders who can play in space are a must to be three-down players. For example, Trevell Johnson has the size and speed to be a run and hit defender who can drop into coverage if needed. On the outside, players will have to play in coverage and match up against a variety of positions while also showing some edge rushing blitz ability.

Targets: Texas already has one in Trevell Johnson and is working hard on California thumper Niuafe Tuihalamaka. On the outside, Harold Perkins is one of the top prizes on the defensive side of the ball. Other targets include Chicago linebacker Sebastian Cheeks and in-state prospects Ish Harris, Kip Lewis and Martrell Harris.

CORNERBACK
Offers: 14

Commits: (1) Jaylon Guilbeau

Expected numbers: 2-3

The Position: There haven’t been enough new offers at this position to get an idea of what Terry Joseph is looking for at the cornerback position. The best clues say that there isn’t much that will change from Valai to Joseph. Guilbeau represents the first in that group and could play corner or nickel, but cornerback is where the board has seen the least amount of turnover.

Targets: Denver Harris is the priority as he is for just about every program in the country. Terrance Brooks represents the other target in-state, but the Longhorns are going to have to find more as 2022 is low on the cornerback position in Texas. Look for this position to evolve through the spring and summer, especially if on campus camps resume in the summer.

SAFETY

2022 S Bryce Anderson (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)
Offers: 12

Commits: (1) Bryan Allen

Expected numbers: 3

The Position: There isn’t much that will change from Chris Ash’s philosophy to Blake Gideon. Gone are the days of oversized safeties who can’t play in space and matchup against the jitterbugs of the Big 12. Allen’s commitment gives Texas a physical box safety who can cover and support against the run. Look for the Longhorns to find a centerfield defender who can run and cover and a slot player or hybrid defender.

Targets: Bryce Anderson could play the role of centerfield defender or slot coverage specialist. Jarred Kerr has the versatility to play a number of positions as well while Kamari Wilson could play anywhere in the secondary and Jacoby Mathews would be the perfect fit as a hybrid defender capable of playing in coverage or as a big linebacker in a nickel or dime package. With a four-star already in the class and the Longhorns in a strong position for Anderson, Blake Gideon can be patient and choosy with his approach.

Don't judge him on the 3 star current ranking, he's going to be a P5 QB1 in someone's class and a solid 4* by the end of this cycle. Florida is not fucking around in their interest level in him. Iowa is going harder after him as well since Fleck landed Knuth and Cumbie and TCU aren't going to go quietly.

Scaring him off is 9.95er nonsense, but he's not a QB2 type guy and not everyone wants to be in a class with another QB1 type talent

It seems pretty clear what Flood wants if you look at Bama’s recruting the last couple years. He’s looking for power guys first and he’s fine with taking guys who are already big in HS, which is almost the exact opposite of Herman/Hand who wanted length and good feet first and foremost because they used an almost exclusively zone running scheme. Flood/Sark run a lot more power concepts so they value guys who can displace their man much more.

Huh? This is the first I’ve seen anyone say this, and it certainly doesn’t seem to show on his tape. Unless things have changed with him lately, I think he might be the most likely guy to stick at Tackle of all of our main OL targets.

One of the 247 evaluators/rankers told Roach that they have concerns that Banks is a guard

I have no concerns there. He and Neto are both tackles who have enough anchor to also play guard if that's needed to get them on the field early

If we already have one and are only taking 2-3, I guess what the author is saying is that we aren't going to land Harris or Brooks. I don't believe him.
