Mike Roach:  Five prospects Texas should evaluate this spring

Five prospects Texas should evaluate this spring

Mike Roach

Spring football starts soon in Texas.

Though coaches won’t be able to get out and evaluate because of the COVID dead period, there will be plenty of spring film to watch. Many players have been making a big name for themselves on the 7v7 and camp circuit this spring and performances in track and field are also opening eyes.

Here are five players without a Texas offer that the Longhorns should take a long look at this spring.

Julian Humphrey, CB, Clear Lake

Humphrey has been one of the most impressive prospects I’ve seen this spring. In January I watched him dominate during Pylon 7v7 in Dallas winning MVP honors and that continued throughout the circuit. Away from the 7-on-7 field, Humphrey has been lighting it up on the track putting down blistering times in the 100m including a 10.55 in the past week. Humphrey has the size and physicality to play outside at corner with the versatility to line up in several different parts of the secondary. Penn State, Arizona State, USC, LSU and Texas A&M are all in the lead position now, but Texas could get into the race if they move now.

Miller McCrumby, TE, Mount Pleasant

A big receiver who plays with dominant physical ability, McCrumby is the perfect prospect to mold into a tight end. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, McCrumby has the length and room to add weight necessary to be a flex tight end prospect. A big play machine who has been taking over at 7-on-7 tournaments this spring, McCrumby shows sharp route-running skills and an excellent release off the line of scrimmage. While blocking would have to be developed, he’s the type of prospect who could be used as a mismatch in an imaginative offense.

DJ Allen, WR, Gladewater

If Texas is still looking for wide receiver prospects with quickness and explosive ability, look no further than east Texas wide receiver prospect DJ Allen. Allen shows elite quickness and tremendous short area burst to turn quick passes into long scores. He can play both outside as a vertical threat and in the slot as a walking mismatch for defenses. Allen is a four-sport athlete who competes in football, baseball, basketball and track and field. In 2019, Allen ran a 10.87 100 meter time as a freshman and he shows dynamite ability on film.

Justin Medlock, LB, Manvel

Coleman Hutzler had Texas all in on Medlock, but he never heard from the new staff when they took over. Perhaps it’s too late to move on him, but Medlock is a dynamic linebacker prospect with great instincts and production at a high level of Texas high school football. The Longhorns are dialed in on a few different linebacker prospects right now, but it wouldn’t hurt to be in on one of the best in the state while they can still get in.

Quincy Wright, DT, Duncanville

If you’re looking for talented defensive tackle with a college-ready body, Wright is that guy. For some reason he hasn’t been able to pick up the attention a player like him normally would in state, but he had a strong performance as a junior despite dealing with some injuries last year. Texas already holds a commitment from Kristopher Ross and could be close on a few other DL targets, but Wright should be a guy to watch this spring and fall.

Does anyone take ESPN ratings seriously?

I do when I'm comparing them to, say, Rivals.

i suppose that's fair.  In general, I think ESPN's ratings are trash.  Rivals is ok outside of the West Coast, which they largely ignore.  247 is by far the best IMO

have there been any reports lately on Bledsoe’s recruitment? It seems like we’re running third behind OU and A&M.

Rivals ranking from unranked to 106 in the country out front shoulda told ya.

Yeah, that's the most logical reason. Infuriating, but logical.

Given our many lines of communication into the Martin defense at this point, you have to think he's told all his friends he's going to Stanford.

I miss the good ol' days pre-Harbaugh when they loaded up on 2 stars. Or they could, ya know, reach into another fucking state and take their linemen once in a while.

Unless it was Texas preferring one over the other, tree can fuck right off. Getting tired of that bullshit.

Oh? You just now got tired of it? Connor Robertson was the straw that broke the camel’s back, was it?

Fuck Stanford. Fuck Solomon Thomas. And fuck your patience, sir.

Rest assured, sir, the gravamen of my complaint is not just this most recent recruit, but rather the duration and frequency with which that wannabe Harvard of the west has been stealing our ‘croots.

Texas mods think it's Texas, LSU mod thinks it's LSU.

Unless he decides to commit soon, none of this matters until visits happen.

And one or both groups will be writing a story about how things looked great, independent corroborating sources, and then it all changed overnight.

Composite has been updated.  Team went from .9408 to .9405 Murphy with the big drop from 5* to .9684, looks like Winfield dropped a bit.  Ross now 4* at .9037 and Johnson moved up a bit as well.

Also, the state now has 9 composite 5*'s (Ewers, Harris, Campbell, Perkins, Banks, Abor, Weigman, Stewart, and Burton) plus Bear and Anderson are .98+ on composite.

State also has 20 of the top 100 national recruits in the composite.

Derrick Brown is also now a composite 4*.

Offers to prospects in Nevada, Colorado and Utah in the last few days.

i for one am not complaining about sprinkling offers out there beyond Texas and doing some (more) big game hunting nation wide.

Seems like the best case scenario for getting 5*'s is Harris, Campbell, Banks, and Stewart with a shot at Perkins.  The rest aren't even worth thinking about, even if Abor takes an OV.

Jacoby Mathews seems at least worth thinking about, unless I missed something. Is Coleman a Bama lock?

It going to be a long time until June so my thoughts on numbers (ordered by need):

RB 2 - This might be our most talented position for the foreseeable future, but it's also the thinnest.  This is a year where we must take 2, imo.

DB 4 - This might as well be the standard DB class in modern football.  We need safeties more than CBs.  I am confident we will be closing out this position with names already discussed in thread.

OL 4 - We are actually over-bodied at OL currently (even after expected transfers), but we only have 2+2 true/RS freshman, so we need a heavier class this year to keep pace, and the state has enough talent this year.  This is my area of most concern seeing how things are shaking out so far.

Edge 2 + DT 2 - Changing defenses and changing personnel needs and leaves us light along the front.  With the exception of top-caliber pass rushers, the DL always seems to leave its best players to be found later in the recruiting cycle.  I'm not paricularly worried about these positions at this point.

There aren't immediate roster needs at other positions, but we have some extra scholarships to play with:

WR 2+

ILB 2+

QB 1+

TE 1+

Spoiler

RECRUITING

There’s going to be a nine-day window in June that will see many of the more important prospects in 2022 and 2023 visit Austin.

June 11th-13th weekend:

Official visitors — 2022

WR Evan Stewart, Frisco Liberty: The state’s top-rated receiver and track star will also see Florida on June 4-6, and Texas A&M on June 24-26. Sarkisian gives UT a real chance and he needs to spark a genuine connection with Stewart.

OL Cole Hutson. Frisco High: The big o-lineman will see Texas A&M and OU after his Austin trip. This is a three-way race that could go either north or south of Frisco at the end of the day. Texas is well liked by a family member.

LB Robby Snelling, McQueen - Reno: This will be a football as well as baseball visit for the lefty who dials it up to 94mph.

June 18th-20th weekend

Official visitors (except where noted):

QB Maalik Murphy, Junipero Serra, CA (TEXAS): Murphy will get the chance to forge relationships with the coaches and use his charisma on potential Horns.

RB Jaydon Blue, Klein Cain (TEXAS): Blue 22 is still being pursued by an OOS school, though it shouldn’t affect Texas.

RB Tavorus Jones, El Paso Burges: This matchup makes too much sense. Orange house.

WR Armani Winfield, Lewisville (TEXAS): He’s been waiting for this weekend. Finally an opportunity to help recruit for the class. At the same time, Winfield likes the idea of taking official visits, and USC is a school he’s expressed interest in visiting.

WR Shazz Preston, Saint James, LA: The LSU and Alabama priority target is giving Texas a serious look. His brother plays at Mississippi State, so there will be trips to Starkville as well.

WR CJ Williams, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA): Texas feels like it has a good shot here. It’s a quiet confidence. He’ll see Notre Dame in June as well.

OT Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek: Official visits to LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M are set for June with a decision likely during the summer. Texas is the favorite over LSU and Texas A&M.

DT Kristopher Ross, North Shore (TEXAS): USC, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss pushing hard for official visits, and Ross will very likely some. He threw a 61’ shot put in case you missed it. That will only raise his stock.

LB Niuafe Tuihalamaka, Bishop Alemany, CA: Notre Dame gets an official visit prior to Texas, and that is where the decision will very likely come from barring a major change with USC.

LB Trevell Johnson, Arlington Martin (TEXAS): There were whispers he’ll take a few visits beside Texas. Regardless, he’s still going to UT.

LB Harold Perkins (Cy Park): This will be an unofficial visit, as Perkins wants to save his Texas official for during the season. That’s a big win for the staff. Perkins will be at Texas A&M June 4-6 for the Aggies’ big weekend. While Jeff Banks is huge in this recruitment for Texas, Perkins is talking a lot with head coaches at this point. USC, Alabama, LSU and Florida are also in it.

S Jacoby Mathews Ponchatoula, LA: UT continues to have a quiet confidence here. Florida will get an official visit June 4-6, which will be a huge visit weekend in Gainesville. Mathews likes being recruited, so the Texas staff has to stay on it.

S Bryan Allen Jr., Aledo (TEXAS): Locked into Texas.

DB Bryce Anderson, Beaumont West Brook: Anderson’s is an unofficial visit too, as Anderson will use his UT official later in the year. He will also make officials to Miami, Texas A&M, USC, and possibly Alabama in June. Alabama is not considered a serious contender in this one.

DB Terrance Brooks, Plano John Paul II: His Alabama visit will likely the the 25th-27th. Notre Dame is also expected to receive an OV. Texas A&M is a good bet to receive an OV, and is likely to have Terrance and family in attendance for the spring game. Nick Saban is all in on this recruitment.

CB Denver Harris, North Shore: Texas-Alabama battle, with A&M hovering below the rim. Nick Saban is all in on this recruitment as well, now having had at least three zoom calls with Harris and mom. Texas and Alabama will battle on this one with Texas A&M also scheduled to receive an OV.

*Note on DL recruiting:

Texas has taken an interest in 2022 DL Quency Wiggins (Madison Prep/Baton Rouge). The 6-foot-7, 275-pounder has offers from Auburn, Ole Miss, Baylor, Michigan, and LSU, among others. An offer from Texas in the coming weeks would not surprise IT. This is the same high school Malcolm Roach attended.

Tigerdroppings seems to think it'd be absurd if Matthews ends up at Texas.

Two likely fake insiders on that thread - 1 saying it's UT/UF, one saying Texas had (past tense) momentum but he's heard bad stuff about Sark, whatever that means. Probably bs but given what we've seen/heard with some other recruitments it seems like our rivals are negative recruiting Sark's personal issues hard. Hope there's nothing behind the scenes still happening there.
