Dunk on that thinking all you want. But, the same people that are going to dunk on this are the ones who, for 10 years, assumed "the staff has it under control" while the cfb world passed by. Maybe it's fair not to assume. Especially when you have an understanding of how elite programs evaluate and recruit and you look around and think, this ain't it. Dunk away, but it was a fair criticism in context.

Exactly.   And the “he didn’t get enough help narrative” is bullshit regardless.  Our administration was downright desperate for him to succeed for a variety of reasons, culminating with the infamous Driveway Summit where our school president made a house call to beg Tulsa’s pissant offensive coordinator to join the staff.

Anyone who attended a booster event when Charlie was first hired and toured around the state could see this wasn’t going to work.   That guy was an idiot.

Are the stories that Strong wanted to hire Chad Morris as OC but was turned down by Patterson due to money not accurate? Strong might've lasted longer if he'd made better assistant hires initially but it would've only delayed the inevitable. He was not ever going to win big at Texas.

You’re a good poster, but the Strong part is just wrong. That guy was a fucking dumbass and in over his head from day one. He failed on every front and more help wasn’t going to solve it. Like any bad management hire, simply surrounding him with more resources and people would have only created a costlier mistake.

fair enough, the last part of CTJs comment is absolutely the truth.

The increased recruiting volume is a welcome improvement as long as it doesn’t become an impersonal, numbers based task. The personal connections with recruits are what wins the deal. It sounds like they are using extra people to help facilitate those personalized interactions which is good. Just don’t make it fake. Kids spot fake a mile away.

I agree. They should definitely use the recruits names, remember what sport they play, and not just refer to them as numbers.

Strong was always going to go with Watson. He just needed a reason why he couldn’t get a better OC like Morris.

i think Strong could have been ok but was set up to fail from the start with Steve fucking Patterson hiring the guy and then not setting up the support structure around him.

"making the job a lot more difficult than it ever needed to be is Tom Herman's middle name.

Steve Patterson is an epic fuck up but Strong wasn't ready for this type of job.  the support structure wasn't the issue.  he wasn't going to be OK.  OK is what Tom Herman was.

yeah Morris was not attainable as an OC, he knew he'd be a HC the next year. It was just a pie in the sky name thrown out there to get rejected so he could have his real choice.

Jesus Christ. The people still attempting to explain away Charlie Strong AFTER he inherited a great situation at South Florida and buttfucked it straight back into irrelevance is something to behold. Yes, it was always going to be Watson.  I'm amazed you people forgot that not only did Morris never get real consideration, but Strong ALSO showed no consideration for Lincoln Riley, and Tom Herman allegedly told Strong No, laughing while he did so. So it's even worse than you people seem to remember. All of those were actual names that were available at the time and were presented to Strong.

"Oh, listen, Charlie was bad, but his support structure was bad." WHO GIVES A FUCK. Strong was fucking horrible. Statistically the worst coach in Texas history, if I'm not mistaken. Just a fucking dud wrapped in stupidity, and he proceeded to move onto his next position and set that on fire while simultaneously trying to extinguish it solely with his own rancid diarrhea. Just bent over and shitting into the flames he kindled. Fuck him. Stop even wasting time trying to fucking equivocate or explain away any aspect of his monumental and complete failure as a HC by whatever metric you may choose to use. Fucking fuck.

Spring Game visitors list:

Devon Campbell, Arlington Bowie
BJ Allen, Aledo (TEXAS)
Maalik Murphy, Junipero Serra (CA) (TEXAS)
Trevell Johnson, Arlington Martin (TEXAS)
Armani Winfield, Lewisville (TEXAS) (maybe)

We anticipate this list could grow over the next few days, and there are a few names we're still confirming. We might also see some players just wait until the dead period is lifted in June.

Patterson was a bad hire who, not shockingly, made bad hires.  If Strong knew what the hell he was doing he would have demanded certain requirements before taking the job.

Narrator....Strong did not know what he’s was doing.

Mike at Night: Notes on spring game visitors

Mike at Night: Notes on spring game visitors

Mike Roach

— Five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell confirmed with me tonight that he would attend the Texas spring game this weekend. This is obviously great news coming just two weeks after Campbell and his uncle took a self-guided trip to Austin. As I reported a few weeks ago, Campbell plans to make several unofficial visits to Texas throughout the year in addition to an official trip in either the summer or fall. Texas remains in an excellent spot for the elite guard prospect, and getting him back to Austin this weekend is an incredibly positive sign.

— I spoke with Maalik Murphy tonight who is booked for a return to Austin this weekend along with his quarterback trainer Danny Hernandez. Murphy is coming off of a shortened junior spring season where he got some valuable game reps. Now that he's headed into his senior year, Murphy has all eyes forward to make sure he can make the most of it before enrolling in school. Murphy said he plans to do some recruiting with the other prospects on campus this weekend and he's recently been texting with guys like Campbell to try and build the 2022 class.

— 2023 DeSoto WR Johntay Cook is a maybe for the game. He'd like to make it but he has a track meet that might interfere with the ability to visit. The same can be said for Rueben Owens. The lone commit in the 2023 class has a track meet that will interfere with his visit as well. There's a report that 2023 quarterback Arch Manning will also be in attendance. We have not confirmed if that's the case or not but we are checking on that. We thought that if he was visiting, Owens would be along with him. The two have been growing a bond as Owens has been trying to get him to Austin and Owens recently spent the day with Manning after traveling to New Orleans for a 7v7 tournament.

Spoiler

I was over at Lewisville this afternoon to catch up with Texas commit Armani Winfield and top 2023 target Jordan Renaud.

*** Unfortunately, I was told when I arrived that Winfield would not be practicing this afternoon. Winfield recently underwent a medical procedure which had been holding him out of practice for the week.

I was able to dig up that Winfield did make a trip down to Austin a couple of weeks ago which is more than a good sign for his commitment status. I think it goes without saying, but Winfield is unlikely to make it back to Austin this weekend.

Teammate and Texas commit Kristopher Ross is unable to attend due to a regional track meet.

OL Devon Campbell, Arlington Bowie
S BJ Allen, Aledo (TEXAS)

LB Trevell Johnson, Arlington Martin (TEXAS)

The top in-state corner will see Austin this weekend, and the latest on 2022 defensive line targets. Enjoy the evening news.

CB Denver Harris, North Shore (2022):

DL David Oke, Alief Hastings (Houston, TX)
CB Denver Harris, North Shore
DL Jordan Renaud, Lewisville (2023)

DL Quency Wiggins, Madison Prep (Baton Rouge, LA) (2022):

UT went into Louisiana looking for an interior defensive lineman recently. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound composite four-star holds 24 offers including LSU, Auburn, Florida, Arizona State, and USC.

“It’s been really great and slow," said Wiggins, about the recruiting process. "I don't have any top schools yet."

The dual-sport dude also plays basketball for Madison Prep, hears a lot from Michigan and Florida State, and isn't ready to make any type of decision. However, he has an idea what he's looking for.

"I’m just looking to play and a place that feels like home," Wiggins said.

He seemed a little indifferent when discussing the Longhorns, so we'll see how much they pursue moving forward.

DT Bear Alexander, Fort Worth Brewer (2022) (GEORGIA):

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound composite five-star continues to hear from the Texas staff. The Georgia pledge also stays close to Alabama and Texas A&M, and will likely make June official visits to destinations other than Athens.

The Max Preps second-team junior All American has relocated to Brewer HS in Fort Worth, following stops in Terrell, Dallas Skyline, and Denton Ryan, where he helped the Raiders win the 5A D1 state championship. Texas DL coach Bo Davis still stays close to Alexander, and is trying to get him on campus in June.
