Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

(Mike Roach) The Stampede: How to pitch offensive prospects on Texas board

Spoiler

Everything matters in recruiting.

Relationships matter, facilities matter, winning matters and the sales pitch very much matters. Like anything sales-related, the presentation can play a big role in winning or losing.

Inspired by a Horns247 subscriber's suggestion, I decided to look into what pitches could resonate with certain recruits. While one player may need to be pitched on playing time, another may need to be sold on fit.

I combed through the Texas offer list and found 10 prospects to start with. After checking in with sources near those recruits, I gathered enough information to craft a pitch for each one.

In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, I give my opinion on which pitches could work for certain recruits and why.

Tavorus Jones, RB, El Paso Burges

The Player: A versatile runner with speed and a frame to carry more weight. Jones ran for 1,824 yards during his career including a brief stint in 2018 and a COVID-shortened season in 2020. Jones holds 25 offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Penn State, Michigan, TCU, Texas A&M and USC. At 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, Jones is ranked as the No. 15 running back in the nation and No. 31 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Any back Texas is bringing in will have to be ok with being part of a two-back class with the number one runner in the nation in Jaydon Blue.

For Jones, that shouldn’t be a problem as he’s been recruited with this knowledge for a long time. The shift in philosophy for running backs over the years is to the point where saving wear and tear by forming a “by-committee” backfield that can take the pressure off of one guy and avoid running one back into the ground. The pitch for Jones should start there and accentuate his qualities as a runner and how they could work hand-in-hand with Blue. Aside from that, Texas could also pitch turning Jones into a state hero while also focusing on representing his hometown of El Paso. Add in the fact that the Longhorns were the first school to offer with Stan Drayton’s record of development and you have enough to wrap push this recruitment over the top.

Evan Stewart, WR, Frisco Liberty

The Player: The former Texas commit is one of the most explosive wide receivers in the country. A 247Sports Composite five-star prospect, Stewart holds 37 offers from the likes of Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, Alabama, USC and many others. At 6-feet, 175 pounds, Stewart is ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver in the country and No. 9 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Stewart is one of the more independent prospects in the country and he has a few different layers to consider when making his decision process.

The first is a passing offense conducive to his playmaking skill that can prepare him for the next level. Part of that pitch will have to be showing how Stewart can be used in a role that features him as a central piece of the offense. The second consideration for Stewart will be his personal brand. As has been mentioned before, Stewart is a star on social media. As such, an environment and setting where he can create content will be a part of the decision. That goes hand in hand with the possibilities that surround the name, image and likeness rulings changes happening across college football. While we are still in the infancy of that policy, Stewart will likely be looking for a big brand that can help him maximize his earning potential at the next level. Stewart will likely also run track in college, so Texas will need the track program invested in this one.

Brenen Thompson, WR, Spearman

The Player: One of the fastest prospects in the country, Thompson turned in a great performance at the state track and field championships last week. The four-star prospect holds 36 offers from programs such as Oklahoma State, Alabama, Clemson, Texas, Texas A&M and many more. At 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Thompson is ranked as the No. 11 wide receiver in the nation and No. 17 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: For a small-town kid like Thompson, sometimes a big city like Austin can be intimidating.

We haven’t heard any of that when it comes to Thompson himself, but making him feel like Austin is home will be priority number one. From there, showing Thompson how he could fit into the offense and used in a unique way that fits his skillset. He’s probably not like Stewart in needing to know that the offense is tailored for him, but he will need to see some examples of how he will be used. Thompson was raised by a single mother who wants to be able to see him play as often as possible, so proximity should help the Longhorns strike a blow against Clemson. Track and field will also be a big part of the future for Thompson, so Texas will need to have the track program heavily involved and invested in this recruitment as well.

C.J. Williams, WR, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

The Player: One of the top prospects on the west coast, Williams has some of the best polish of any receiver out there. The four-star prospect holds nearly 50 offers with programs such as Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama, Arizona State, Florida, LSU, Michigan and Oregon. At 6-foot-2, 193 pounds, Williams is ranked as the No. 9 wide receiver in the nation and No. 7 overall prospect in California, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Texas isn’t currently in the lead here, but the Longhorns have everything Williams is looking for.

Williams is looking for a good business school, a good offensive system to play in, and a good relationship with his coaches. Texas can offer all of those things in a city that will offer a culture close to that of southern California. Texas still has a lot of proving it to do, especially when it comes to his other suitors like Notre Dame, Alabama and Ohio State. The opportunity for early playing time will be there as Steve Sarkisian looks to build an offense around this class of recruits. The Longhorns can pitch academics on a level with Notre Dame in a place with better weather.

Kelvin Banks, OL, Humble Summer Creek

The Player: One of the top-ranked offensive line prospects in the country, Banks is pivotal for Kyle Flood when it comes to building this offensive line class. A 247Sports Composite five-star prospect, Banks holds 24 offers from programs such as LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama and many others. At 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, Banks is ranked as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the nation and No. 6 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Banks is more of a soft-spoken kid, but Kyle Flood’s approach resonated with Banks and his family from the time he arrived in Austin. There aren’t as many specific buttons to push with Banks as there with others, but he still has a few boxes he wants to check. Development will be key for him and Flood has a history of NFL production. The other key will be selling Austin itself to Banks and his family. While recently, Banks said he likes everything the state capital has to offer, he previously said he was looking for a smaller environment that was more like a college town. More than anything, Flood has to sell Banks on a vision. While the Longhorns have been down on the offensive line and haven’t had many NFL draftees, Banks could be part of the class that turns things around and builds for the future.

Cole Hutson, OL, Frisco

The Player: Hutson is one of the more versatile offensive line prospects in the country and he has some of the top programs in the region hot on his trail. Hutson holds 14 offers from programs such as Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama, Arizona State, Penn State, TCU and West Virginia. At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Hutson is ranked as the No. 11 offensive guard in the country and No. 50 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Hutson’s pitch is actually pretty straight forward, and it’s a winnable recruitment for the Longhorns.

Hutson wants to find the right mix of football and academics, and his preference for a top-notch business school should have the Longhorns at the top. While most recruits offer lip-service to academics, Hutson has been doing a wealth of research into the academic programs he’s considering. He’s had several conversations with professors at McCombs and is also interested in how a football player can also handle the class load. Putting together the best academic pitch possible and involving players who are students in the business program could answer all the questions he needs answered. The push from Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkisian on the football side has been superb, and I don’t believe they should change anything up in that approach. Sell Hutson on the same view as Banks from a football perspective and let the academic pitch do the heavy lifting.

Devon Campbell, OL, Arlington Bowie

The Player: One of the elite prospects in the entire country, Campbell is undoubtedly one of the most important recruits on the Texas board. A five-star prospect, Campbell holds nearly 30 offers from programs such as Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon and Auburn. At 6-foot-3, 310 pounds, Campbell is ranked as the No. 1 offensive guard in the country and No. 3 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Pitch: Texas has to keep hitting it out of the park at every opportunity with Campbell. The five-star prospect is pivotal to success in this recruiting cycle and could be a major feather in the cap of Flood in year one. Campbell stays pretty tight-lipped when it comes to what he’s looking for, but development is going to be used against Texas by every school he’s considering. Flood has to neutralize that and sell Campbell on the vision of being a ringleader in the class and a prospect who can change the perception at Texas. While this is the same vision Flood will try to sell several offensive linemen on, getting Campbell to buy in and commit during the summer could make for a huge explosion in their class. Campbell has been to Texas more than any other school, and there are several favorable voices in his ear. If they stay the course they should be able to close.

Yeah, because there is something in the water in Austin that has caused UT to have so few OL drafted lately.

Yeah... maybe something like a few former administrations that didn't give a damn about Texas Football being dominant and some harrowing coaching hires.

IT

Spoiler

CB Denver Harris, North Shore - 2022: June is going to be huge for the recruitment of the five-star corner. He’ll take official visits to his top four schools in successive weeks: June 4th to A&M; June 11th to LSU; June 18th to Texas; and June 25th to Alabama. Despite four teams being in it, Inside Texas has felt this is a two team race between UT and Alabama, with UT holding the edge as of now. Obviously with Alabama getting the last visit, that’s going to give Harris a lot to think about. IT expects a decision from Harris before his senior season.

CB Terrance Brooks, John Paul II - 2022: Another recruitment that should be decided by June visits for a priority corner. You’ll notice UT hasn’t moved off its top targets at corner, to include Bryce Anderson. Our intel has A&M sliding out of the picture and Clemson making a move, however, like with Harris, this should boil down to official visits in successive weeks to Texas and Alabama. Brooks and Harris will be in Austin and Tuscaloosa in back to back weekends together. IT still likes Texas, but again, Nick Saban is working Brooks hard and Brooks likes the idea of playing for Saban. This is going to be a tight race. As @Fuddy has pointed out, maybe Alabama can flip five-star corner Travis Hunter from Florida State.

DB Bryce Anderson, Beaumont West Brook and DB Jaylon Guilbeau, Port Arthur Memorial - 2022: After narrowly missing qualifying for state in the 100 meters, Anderson decided to make the trip to Austin anyway with his friend and Texas commit, Jaylon Guilbeau. The duo spent a couple of nights in Austin. The state track meet in Austin is always a good time to make the rounds and hang out with athletes. If you go, you’re very likely to bump into football players.

S BJ Allen, Aledo (2022) - Texas: IT caught up with four-star Bryan Allen Jr who continues to help build UT’s 2022 class.

“We just had a state championship celebration last week,” said Allen. “Now, I’m just prepping to lead my defense in my last season. And getting bigger and faster and making sure Jaden (2024 little brother) is ready to take over when I leave.”

The Texas coaches talk to Allen often and the message is clear.

“(UT coaches) are just excited to get me on the Forty Acres,” said Allen. “I talk to most of the 2022 guys. We have a chance to do something big at Texas, we just have to be ready to get to work.”

After Evan Stewart convinced him to commit to Texas, now it’s Allen’s turn. He’s working on the five-star receiver from Frisco Liberty.

Until then, it’s one final off-season for Allen and one last last chance at another state title.

Williams and Cosmi have changed that. But Texas should see this as a yearly trend.

June visit plans for Top247 WR Shazz Preston
STEVE WILTFONG

Spoiler

June visit plans for Top247 WR Shazz Preston
STEVE WILTFONG

Saint James (La.) High Top247 2022 receiver Shazz Preston has a couple official visits locked in and a few more unofficials for June.

The blue-chipper will head to USC the first weekend of the month and Texas the weekend of June 18 for officials.

Unofficials are set for Georgia on June 8-9, LSU on June 19 and Alabama June 22-23.

Preston’s father Shawn talked about each of those programs.

Regarding the Trojans: “It’s Hollywood. With the Name, Image, Likeness laws changing, you have to do your due diligence and what they have to provide. They are rich in tradition in receivers and quarterback play.”

Regarding the Longhorns: “Coach Sark, he showed the type of mastermind he is with the use of Devonta Smith throughout his career at Alabama and he showcased it in the National Championship game when it came down to individuals trying to double team him and stuff like that. Coach Sarkisian really brought Texas up on the list.”

Regarding the Bulldogs: “Coach Hankton does an awesome job at Georgia of recruiting Louisiana kids, him being a Louisiana native. Georgia is less than an hour away from Atlanta which is a hub in our country with a lot of opportunity outside of football. Coach Monken the offensive coordinator has a lot of experience when it comes down to throwing the football. He was able to show us and breakdown Shazz’s skill set and the roles he can play in his offense.”

Regarding the Crimson Tide: “Alabama they’re Alabama. Coach (Nick) Saban consistently puts kids in the league and of course that’s one of Shazz’s goals. It’s a football factory, especially for receivers the last couple years. Coach Pete Golding he’s from Louisiana and he does a good job recruiting Louisiana kids. Once again athletes coming out of Alabama they’re definitely NFL ready.”

Regarding the Tigers: “That’s the hometown. I don’t slight them at all. They do a marvelous job of recruiting Shazz. They’re in constant communication. Coach O did something real special. He actually talked to us from the draft. The ole saying, go where you’re appreciated and not tolerated. They definitely showed their appreciation and want for him. They had to let go Joe Brady go and they went out and found the next best thing and went out and got some students he tutored in the game. The guys they brought in they’re trying to get back to the offense Coach Brady did a couple years ago so that’s really intriguing and it’s 45 minutes from home.”

A decision for Preston could come before the season starts. He is tabbed by the 247Sports Composite as the nation’s No. 8 receiver and No. 67 prospect overall.

It has been said that in a successive interview format, you want to be first or last. This is because the interviewer will remember the most about these candidates; so, if you present yourself favorably, you get a built-in bonus. Saban makes a living off of securing the final OV spot, and the method makes complete sense: he gets the final impression, and he can curtail the narrative off any conversations and arguments that were given to a recruit beforehand.

However, here's what I hope happens. Notice that both Brooks and Harris will be visiting Texas the weekend before they visit Alabama. Sark, Milwee, Flood, and Banks all come from Bama and possess intimate knowledge regarding how the recruiting machine and overall presentation operates. I'm hopeful that they take proactive steps and reveal much of the pitch before it happens, while driving home their own narrative surrounding UT. Nevertheless, this is Saban they're competing against, and you can't take the shine off of all of those rings, trophies, and draft picks. However, I'll be damned if Sark and company don't have a similar strategy to what I wrote already in the works. I'd rather have the final visit for both, but this won't be a battle built on "We're Texas" and arrogance like we saw the last couple of years in high-profile recruiting battles.

Mike at Night: Recruiting notes to start the week

Spoiler

— I spoke with Boonville (Mo.) edge rusher DJ Wesolak this evening. While it's been quiet on that front when it comes to Texas, it sounds like the Longhorns remain in the mix for him. Wesolak told me he speaks often with Steve Sarkisian and Pete Kwiatkowski, and he's also been talking with Xavier Worthy who reached out to do some recruiting. Wesolak told me he has family in Austin so he plans to make an unofficial visit sometime during the summer where he can stay with them and see the town. As of now, he has official visits to USC and Miami, but he said he plans on using official trips on places that are harder to get to instead of using them as an indicator of which schools are standing out. The Crystal Ball is all over the place for now, but it appears that Texas is still hanging around in the race.

— I stopped by Aledo this morning to see Texas commit Bryan Allen Jr. this morning. The four-star safety looks to be in great shape heading into his senior season as he chases a third state championship ring. Allen said the bond he has with Blake Gideon is really strong and growing even stronger by the day. so far, Texas is the only school he has scheduled for a visit this summer. While he isn't ruling out the possibility of other visits, he doesn't seem to be itching to see a bunch of other schools.

When did LA and Miami become hard to get too?  However they are good choices for a free trip.

I think he's politely saying that he won't have to pay for a place to stay if he takes an unofficial to Texas like he would if he took an unoffical to the other two. It's also quite a bit easier to drive to Austin from Missouri than it is to drive to LA or Miami. Essentially Austin isn't cost prohibitive for an unofficial like the others listed.

Based on the visit list, this will be the best recruiting class we have had in a long time. The strength of the class will probably be RBs, OL, and DBs if things pan out how I expect. QB and WR will be strengths also but that will depend on our season.

DL will be missing some elite cache and we will probably need one or two LBs from out of state. And personally I would have loved to have seen some of the West Coast OL in this class even if it ends up being elite without them. It is interesting that we don't have too many receivers scheduled for official visits. Make no mistake though, we are rocking.

(CJ Vogel) Texas Firmly in the Mix for 2022 Frisco OL Cole Hutson

Spoiler

Last week I stopped by Frisco to catch up with 2022 Frisco OL Cole Hutson.

Hutson has been a busy man over the last couple of weeks with unofficial visits and self guided tours to Oklahoma for their Spring game, Texas A&M and Texas. With June coming in quick, I wanted to get a sense of where things were with Hutson leading up to his three scheduled official visits for the month.

Hutson told me he has three official visits locked in – Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M:

June 11-13 – Texas
June 18-20 – Oklahoma
June 25-27 – Texas A&M
“I am really excited to get out there and see campuses,” Hutson said. “Especially to see coaches face to face. That’s really my big thing, to see them and feel like it is home.”

Visits are going to be a big part of this recruitment. Luckily, Texas has already received an unofficial from about a month ago when Hutson made the trip south to see Austin and the campus.

As I noted last week, Hutson is friends with Jake Majors and has been in communication with him about the new staff’s coaching style and what the overall life is like in Austin. Both topics received pretty high praises from the Frisco High team captain.

“It is really cool to see the direction of the program and where it is going to go,” Hutson said. “I really like what Coach Sark and Coach Flood are going to be bringing to the table, especially since they came from such a high-powered school that won the National Championship. They’ve done everything at such a high level, it’s astonishing to see.”

I get the sense Coach Flood is really after Hutson here. The communication levels are very high as well.

“I talk to Coach Flood on the daily,” Hutson said. “I really like him and I really like his staff that he has built up. I think he is going in the right direction with that. Especially with his game plan, I really like the way he coaches as well.”

Towards the end of the month, I would expect to see Hutson narrow down his list to about four or five schools. I have no reason to believe the three schools that already have OV’s locked in won't make the cut.

Seeing and meeting coaches in person is going to go a long way in this recruitment. Hutson is a very personable guy and easy to get along with. Whichever staff is able to connect with him the most will have the edge in my opinion.

With that said, I wouldn’t expect a decision until around August or a few weeks into the season.

There are some factors that are pulling in Texas’ favor here. The relationship with several players on the team is a plus, as well as the education side of things. Hutson told me he hopes to study business finance and has been doing his home work on the business schools of his prospective colleges. Said he is very impressed with McCombs.

Regardless, this one will likely last until the season if I had to make a guess.

I know several of these might be doing unofficials to UT but I don't see some notables:

WR: E.Stewart, K.Coleman, B.Thompson, J.Hudson

OL: K.Dewberry, D.Campbell, N.Umeozulu, E.Greene

I think Stewart was planning on coming on the 18th. And Campbell wants to use his OV during the season

Looks like Abor has 3 OV's already set up in LSU, Bama', and tOSU.  Wouldn't be surprised if OU and aggy get the last two.

He's been recruiting his ass off for OU for 2 years now, the rest seems like a dog-and-pony show.
