Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

This is the fucking point that needs to resonate, loudly. I am tired of following this shit, year after year, only to watch these motherfucking blatant paymasters win recruits that shouldn't even be in the conversation. Oregon? Get the fuck outta here...West Coast football is a fucking joke. Nobody fucking cares. And what the fuck has Georgia really done since 1980? These programs continue to stockpile elite talent via a coordinated pay-for-play structure, allowing them to win the majority of their games, and wait until the (5) stars align and they eventually get the combination right to make a run at a Title. "This is the Way" in college football today. Meanwhile, the NCAA will continue to pick on teams like Arizona State while ignoring Oregon, Georgia, aggy, Ohio State, Bama, Clemson, etc. We have zero reason at this point not to get in the filth and play the game the way it is being played by the most successful programs. The moral high-ground has gotten us nowhere.

The NCAA didn't decide to pick on Arizona State. There was a full-fledged mutiny at the school. Half the coaching staff - who were aghast at the blatant cheating and the total disregard of pandemic-related precautions -were basically told to go fuck themselves or they'd be fired. So somebody decided to document everything and send it to the NCAA and Yahoo sports as a giant "fuck you".

I think the point about ASU was that the NCAA doesn’t investigate blatant cheating by certain schools (mostly SEC! Nike!), but they will pursue a lesser school when given the case on a silver platter via self-reporting or a whistleblower. “Look at us doing our job!”

Fucking Oregon was a pioneer in using street agents 10-15 years ago. Probably before that, because time flies and shit.

OK - let me make one point.  Do you think teams that win national championships are built upon a bag man approach? In general?

From my coaching experience the super talented kid that has his hand out, is very, very rarely a good team member.  They will not sacrifice for the team, because they only see themselves most of the time.  Sucks because these same kids could be truly, truly great, and better players if they could just somehow look past themselves.

Now the flip side of the coin is that as things shake out regarding profiting from player images, who is in a better place that we are to provide income streams LEGALLY to prospective players.  We are the 800 lb Gorilla when it comes to branding and marketing.

I also disagree with those that discount winning in winning recruiting wars.  Then why has tOSU been eating our lunch for years?  Well maybe, just maybe it's those almost regular BCS appearances?  Not saying that dirty money does not influence some kids, but I think winning is a greater aphrodisiac for most recruits.  Oregon is likely doing some shady shit, but are they gonna win a NC anytime in our lifetimes?  Nope.  Not gonna happen.

I hate losing ANY battle for the big uglies at this point, but it's gonna happen.  IF a kid wants to go the bagman route, it's available, without question.  But I honestly question the ability to build NC level teams with those sorts of kids, because of their lack of team commitment.  IF we are beating OU and just winning the Big 12 with some toe dips into the BCS our recruiting improves dramatically.  We are not sucking at recruiting now, despite the hang wringing of so many between their masturbatory porn viewing.  But I think it folly to think that winning is less important than bag men.  Because is simply isn't.  Flame away future carpel tunnel surgery candidates...

This makes zero sense. Winning is important but during the last decade plus in order to have top tier talent you have to pay up.

A recruit getting $100K-$200K to come play for your school doesn’t mean they are going to be a bad teammate. Most head coaches are making $5MM+ a year. Hell we’ve got an assistant that makes $1MM+. Are they also bad teammates?

The idea that players should come here just to get a free education and be a part of a winning program is extremely outdated. If you want to win, you have to pay.

Last decade of football should have shown you that winning begets getting top talent.  OU, tOSU, Clemson, Alabama... they aren't out paying everyone, they are beating everyone.

Every recent champion has had a roster filled with guys who got paid, it’s laughably naive to think otherwise.

Literally all of those schools minus ou are paying players.  Clemson has a whole fucking church built where they funnel money to recruits.

"Hand wringing and masturbatory porn viewing" (redundant) is this site's motto.

Didn't say they weren't, but other schools I promise were/could/can pay more yet those players still went to those schools. Money isn't the primary factor for most of the elite players.

The NCAA doesn't have subpoena powers. Unless they're hard delivered evidence it's pretty hard for them to prove violations.

Season ticket holder for over 30 years and I let them go this year because it’s now obvious that the illegal paying of players has gotten so out of hand that schools are left with no choice but to cheat or die.

Anyone who knows anything about college football saw what happened at Georgia and A&M and realized it’s all just buying wins now. The sport is losing its appeal to me because of it.

I bought two more because fuck Herman  and my concerns on the above will disappear when we start winning.

I speak from experience, you speak from?

Comparing an assistant coaches salary to $100-200K illegal payment is simply a huge stretch. And by definition, a coach is NOT a teammate.  I'm just saying the most greedy kids may have talent.  But, more often than not, they are not good team leaders, and not the best teammates.  Also when you start down the bag man route you then have to compete within your own recruiting pool when the kids talk about who got what.  Johnny Manziel made shit tons of money while in college, but was he ever a good teammate?

I safely stand by my original statement.

His teammates loved him and they arguably were the most successful they’ve been in the last 25 years. Your original statement is stupid. You’re standing safely by the bus stop with farmer aggy.

jalen waddle seems like a perfectly fine teammate. Jameis Winston was quite popular. Do you have to take into account additional character risks? Sure. But that’s it. LSU won a National title with a team full of dirty recruits. But if you want to jerk off to the idea of moral upright brotherhood in the locker room while we continue to get our asses handed to us, well, all I can say is you’ll fit right in with our stupid fucking alumni. Just go ahead and trot out the “i only want good kids who want to go to Texas” and “I’d rather stop playing football than cheat” and be done with it.

Regarding IT and any of the other pay sites- their fault or not what they sell is access and inside information about the program. Between the coaching search updates and now the start of this recruiting cycle, IT clearly does not possess the information that they claim and market. Reading some of these coaching search updates after the fact knowing now how it went down from one of the individuals who part of the process, it’s hard to reconcile their information from any random person making shit up from the coaching search thread.  I rationalized this by just saying well maybe it was the goal of the university and alumni to intentionally mislead. And when you mix that in with agents spreading misinformation, it was a bad mix. But then there was Bobby Burton claiming to talk to the key decision makers yet he didn’t know fuck all either or was helping in the intentional spreading of misinformation.

And now we are here getting random commitments out of the blue while people we thought we lead for really did not even have us in their final two. It’s hard to reconcile with people on that site like Gerry, Bobby and Scipio that I genuinely respect. Nahlin and Wells are just like any other 9.95’er in my opinion.

Roach "resets the board" and by that he means literally say nothing of substance and don't mention anything on Banks

Spoiler

We are at the midpoint of the recruiting season, and the Longhorns have had their share of ups and downs on the recruiting trail.  With some key players off the board for the moment and others still up for grabs, Texas will need to be on its A game to put together the type of class they want to in 2022.

How is each position shaping up and what options are in front of the staff as they head into the second half of this cycle?  In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we reset the board and look at a position-by-position overview of the class and where these positions currently stand.

QUARTERBACKS

Texas is done at the quarterback position with Maalik Murphy on the train. It’s unlikely the Longhorns will pursue a second quarterback option in this class unless something changes with the current group on campus. Murphy recently finished competing at the Elite 11 Finals where he was ranked within the prestigious group. Murphy has major tools for Steve Sarkisian and AJ Milwee to develop, and the Longhorns have the right quarterback room for Murphy to sit and learn.

RUNNING BACKS
Stan Drayton’s job is pretty much done in 2022. After winning over the nation’s top running back in Jaydon Blue, Texas scored another huge win landing four-star Tyler Legacy back Jamarion Miller. Miller and Blue are the two top backs in the state of Texas and two of the best in the entire country. With Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson and Jonathon Brooks on campus, adding Blue and Miller to the mix will give Texas one of the best rooms in college football. Now that Drayton is done in 2022, he can move on to 2023 and work on winning back Rueben Owens and other top targets in the class.

WIDE RECEIVERS

The Longhorns hold what could be described as a tenuous commitment from Armani Winfield, but there are many options on the board for Andre Coleman. Evan Stewart is the top target as the Longhorns look to reel in their former commit. Stewart is the most dynamic wide receiver in the country, and Texas is in position to capitalize and bring him back. Add in options like Brenen Thompson, Kevin Coleman, Shazz Preston, Jordan Hudson and C.J. Williams, and Texas hopes to be able to sign a strong class of three potential big play stars.

Preston and Williams will both be battles as other schools stand in strong positions for them and Hudson is committed at the moment, but Thompson and Coleman are more wide open. Texas will have to straddle the line of showing enough on offense and at the receiver position while also stressing the need for immediate contributors at the position who can provide the type of dynamic ability on offense Steve Sarkisian and his staff are looking for.

TIGHT END

Texas doesn’t seem to be in any sort of a hurry here as the Longhorns look for the right fit at the position. Recently, the Longhorns hosted the nation’s top tight end in Jaleel Skinner, and Texas has been able to move into the race for him. Arlis Boardingham is another option, but I feel Jeff Banks wants to hold out on the chance of cashing in big with Skinner. This position is still developing early and we won’t know what the picture looks like until Skinner is completely off the board.

OFFENSIVE LINE
The Longhorns are off to a good start with Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson already in the class. Devon Campbell is the top target, but the Longhorns need tackle bodies. Robertson could play it in a pinch, but it’s likely he’s an interior player along with Hutson and potentially Campbell. Texas is hanging in with Kam Dewberry, but they have some ground to make up on schools like Ohio State. Right now, their best hope might lie with Washington prospects Josh Conerly and Malik Agbo.

Northwest sources were bullish on Texas and LSU in the race for Agbo back in the spring. Conerly is a different story. There’s some confidence the Longhorns will get the five-star prospect on campus for an official visit, but they will have to score big in order to win him over. Most people I speak with feel Conerly will likely end up staying out west, but Texas might have the right mix of opportunity to win him over. Earnest Greene, Neto Umeozulu and Mark Nabou are other players the Longhorns are currently engaged with, but all are looked at as strictly interior prospects at the moment.

DEFENSIVE LINE
The Longhorns have been able to get a good start here adding Zac Swanson, Kristopher Ross and Anthony Jones who can all be factors up front. At this point, Texas is operating patiently to try to fill their spots moving forward. Bo Davis will look to players like Bear Alexander, Hero Kanu, and Jaray Bledsoe to join Ross at the defensive tackle position, but the chances of landing Bledsoe are far greater than the other two. Jadon Scarlett and Aaron Bryant are two other interior line prospects to keep an eye on, and Bryant’s race could come down to Texas and Texas A&M. On the outside, Texas is in heavy pursuit of four-star defensive lineman Justice Finkley. After a strong visit last week, the Longhorns are in the final three along with schools like Alabama and Colorado for him. Texas High edge rusher Derrick Brown will make a decision between Texas and Baylor, and the Longhorns will continue to push for DJ Wesolak to end up on campus. Texas will need to continue to work to close Finkley, but they took an important step with him last week. Lander Barton is another rplayer who could factor in as an edge prospect at the next level. It’s likely the Longhorns will take 2-3 more players up front, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a few more offers go out.

LINEBACKER

The Longhorns hold an early commitment from Trevell Johnson, and they’d like to add Jeremy Patton who they hosted during the first week of June. A class of Patton, Johnson and Sebastian Cheeks would be a strong one, though Cheeks has gone radio silent since completing his visits. The major prize is Harold Perkins who the Longhorns see as more of a versatile player that could go between linebacker and defensive back. Texas also has an in with Reno linebacker Robby Snelling, but a future in professional baseball looks very likely for him. Should Jeff Choate miss on those primary players, there are a few others that camped at Texas and could be on the radar. Ethan Wesloski of McKinney Boyd and Kvon Sherman of Pearland both had strong summers on the camp circuit and could be fall evals.

CORNERBACK
Terry Joseph must work to hold on to Jaylon Guilbeau who is getting a strong push from TCU, and the Longhorns would like to add a few others. Denver Harris is the top prospect on the board, and the Longhorns are all in on the North Shore five-star prospect. Texas also feels there’s some versatility in Bryce Anderson to play both corner and safety. If more offers go out in state, Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Adari Haulcy is one to watch. Colorado commit Keyshon Mills is another player with legitimate size and speed who performed well at a Texas camp over the summer.

SAFETY

2022 DB Bryce Anderson (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)

Texas has one piece on board with Bryan Allen Jr, and they’d like to add another in Bryce Anderson who could play cornerback or safety. Blake Gideon would also like to reel in four-star California safety Larry Turner-Gooden who made an unofficial visit to Texas during the last week of June and plans to return to Austin for an official trip in the fall. If Texas needs to look elsewhere, it’s likely that will happen during the fall as Texas scours the state for other players who could fit what Gideon is looking for out of the position.

IT Scoop (open at your own risk)

Spoiler

With Texas seemingly struggling on the recruiting trail, it’s time to reevaluate where IT believes the staff is with the current crop of priority targets.

We are still working to learn what happened in the Kelvin Banks recruitment. We feel strongly that it turned in the last week and our predictions/intel lagged too far behind.

WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX): The top WR on the board who is also the most NIL focused. Oregon was a threat even before they proved to be a real threat for Texas athletes in this cycle.

Gerry: 33%
Eric: 40%
Justin: 40%

WR Brenen Thompson, Spearman (Spearman, TX): 1b for Texas at the position. UT is in a good position with Thompson and his mother, just like with Kelvin Banks a week ago. He still has two official visits left as Alabama, Clemson, and Texas are vying for those dates. His visits to Austin and Eugene exceeded expectations, fwiw.

Gerry: 33%
Eric: 40%
Justin: 35%

WR CJ Williams, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA): Has been viewed as a Notre Dame lean for a long time.

Gerry: 33%
Eric: 20%
Justin: 20%

TE Arlis Boardingham, Birmingham (Van Nuys, CA): We’re just not sure the staff is going to push hard.

Gerry: 10%
Eric: 20%
Justin: 15%

TE Jaleel Skinner, Greer (Greer, SC): Texas and Jeff Banks really like the four-star tight end, and Skinner seems to be willing to listen. Still a long shot today.

Gerry: 15%
Eric: 10%
Justin: 18%

OL Devon Campbell, Bowie (Arlington, TX): One of the biggest needs in the class. Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood will have to outwork Lincoln Riley and Bill Bedenbaugh.

Gerry: 51%
Eric: 55%
Justin: 53%

OL Kam Dewberry, Atascocita (Humble, TX): If Dewberry plays the long game this could become interesting but there’s a lot of work left to be done.

Gerry: 15%
Eric: 15%
Justin: 15%

OL Neto Umeozulu, Allen (Allen, TX): Don’t be surprised if Texas makes another run at the Allen product. If he listens remains to be seen.

Gerry: 10%
Eric: 15%
Justin: 20%

DL Jaray Bledsoe, Marlin (Marlin, TX): With a good jump on the recruitment, Bo Davis might be savvy enough to pull this one off.

Gerry: 40%
Eric: 40%
Justin: 35%

DL Aaron Bryant, Southaven (Southaven, MS): An underrated player in SEC country, Texas is in good position now but can he really be pulled out of the region?

Gerry: 40%
Eric: 50%
Justin: 45%

DE Justice Finkley, Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, AL): Finkley just announced a top-three of Alabama, Colorado, and Texas. That sets up well for Texas, we think, if Alabama doesn’t push for him. If Alabama does push, welp.

Gerry: 33%
Eric: 40%
Justin: 40%

EDGE Derrick Brown, Texas High (Texarkana, TX): The east Texas edge-backer really likes Sark, PK, and the gang. Just have to hold off… Baylor.

Justin: 60%

LB Harold Perkins, Cy-Fair (Cypress, TX)

Gerry: 30%

Gerry: 33%
Eric: 40%
Justin: 40%

LB Jeremy Patton, Tenaha (Tenaha, TX): As long as the Horns stay the course, this one trends Texas. Early September decision too.

Gerry: 50%
Eric: 60%
Justin: 60%

CB Denver Harris, North Shore (Galena Park, TX): UT continues to push the right buttons here with an decision timeline likely in September.

Gerry: 40%
Eric: 60%
Justin: 59%

DB Bryce Anderson, West Brook (Beaumont, TX): Anderson’s timeline is infinite. He could announce at anytime.

HOOPS

Keyonte George, SG, iSchool Academy (TX)
Texas continues to be in a good position for the 6-foot-4 guard. With official visits to Texas, Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State in the June rearview mirror, the question now is if Kentucky receives a fifth and final official visit. A November decision is likely.

IT percentage: 75%

Arterio Morris, PG, iSchool Academy (TX)
The 6-foot-3 guard is yet to schedule official visits to Kansas, Georgia or Florida. Baylor is trying to make a run with the Bears facing uncertainty in the Cason Wallace recruitment. No firm decision timeline is set.

IT percentage: 75%

Cason Wallace, CG, Richardson High (TX)
Texas head coach Chris Beard was very impressed with the in-person evaluation of Wallace two weeks ago. Now, Texas is trying to make a more concerted run at the versatile 6-foot-3 guard that is the best defender of the talented crop of in state guards. Problem for Texas right now, the SEC programs are ahead with Tennessee having a strong connection to Wallace and family.

IT percentage: 30%

Anthony Black, CG, Coppell High (TX)
Black likes Texas. Issue here is fit if Arterio Morris were to pick the Longhorns. Black sees himself as a point guard, and while he is not a point guard, the schools that can show him that he is the primary in the class have the best shot to win out currently. Duke offer was huge, and Gonzaga is hanging around.

IT percentage: 30%

Kijani Wright, Windward School (CA)
Texas is very much in the hunt here, but the question remains if the Longhorns can win out for one of the top prospects in Los Angeles when the in-state schools are enjoying success. USC is considered the primary competition, but Stanford is also a factor and is expected to receive an official visit.

IT percentage: 50%

Kel’el Ware, North Little Rock (AR)
The 6-foot-11 big man was Chris Beard’s first out-of-state offer after after being hired at Texas. Ware was originally scheduled to make an official visit to Texas in June, but that has been rescheduled for September 4th weekend. Arkansas, Memphis, USC, Ole Miss, Oregon and Kentucky are among the programs receiving the most mention in recent weeks.

IT percentage: 35%

Keyonte George, SG, iSchool Academy (TX)
Texas continues to be in a good position for the 6-foot-4 guard. With official visits to Texas, Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State in the June rearview mirror, the question now is if Kentucky receives a fifth and final official visit. A November decision is likely.

Last decade of football should have shown you that winning begets getting top talent.  OU, tOSU, Clemson, Alabama... they aren't out paying everyone, they are beating everyone.

Lol you think those teams aren’t paying players at all?

I already admitted that winning is important. But so is paying players especially when you aren’t winning and need to generate momentum.

Let’s say the schools you mentioned are squeaky clean. Do you think 2021 Texas is on their level? I don’t think so. If we pay some star players then 2023 Texas might be.

The low percentages is just the more subtle aspect of them pushing the narrative that Sark can’t close and the staff is the problem, not their reporting.

That was the most pussy shit I’ve read outside of the sugar baby thread. They had bad intel, were extremely wrong and instead of fucking owning it they just pull a 180 and go from sunshine pumping to doom and gloom. “It’s not our problem the staff can’t close”. Basically everyone they listed as 30% is a 50% and all their 50% or better are like 75% but they can’t say that in case they are wrong again. Idk guys, maybe instead don’t triple down on wrong info. Pussy shit, and if you believe anything in that article you’re a pussy too. All gas no brakes mother fuckers

They made their intel up.  Only reason they were that wrong.
