Wiltfong: Texas off an running in 2022, Jaylon Guilbeau the latest commit

Spoiler

New Texas commit Jaylon Guilbeau keeps the Longhorns rolling in the 2022 cycle as the nation’s No. 8 cornerback in the Top247 joins the No. 1 overall prospect in Quinn Ewers and four-star receiver Phaizon Wilson as early pledges for Tom Herman and his staff.

All three look like instant impact contributors when they arrive in Austin a couple years down the road, particularly the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Guilbeau, who plays his high school ball at Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial and his 7-on-7 with powerhouse Fast Houston.

“A guy that can play immediately,” Fast Houston founder Ro Simon said. “He’ll be able to come in and make an impact right away at nickel. He’s aggressive. He can play outside, he has the speed, has great footwork, has great mechanics.

“I think the guy has a high ceiling as a defensive back.”

The Top247 tabs Guilbeau as the nation’s No. 57 prospect overall.

“His work ethic, it’s his junior year of high school and he looks like a junior in college,” Simon said. “With that being said, he spends a lot of time in the weight room. I give him an A plus in that category.”

Simon also gives Texas cornerbacks coach Jay Valai an A plus in his efforts of recruiting Guillbeau who's offer list also included Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M and USC.

“He comes from a background where he was a trainer in Dallas a couple years ago,” Simon said. “He has the energy. They did a great job recruiting Jaylon the past eight months.”

The Longhorns have recruited at a high level under Tom Herman including three-straight Top10 classes from 2018 to 2020. They currently sit No. 15 in 2021 and are now at No. 4 in 2022.

“They’re going to be a National Championship contender over the next season or two with those guys Herman is bringing in and the new coaches he hired,” Simon said. “I think there is a new energy there and with the talent they’ve had the last few classes they’re going to compete with the Alabamas and the Clemsons. They have the talent.”

Who else could Texas land from Fast Houston? Simon says the Longhorns are doing well with the country’s No. 4 running back in 2022 in Jaydon Blue.

Stan Drayton is doing a good job in trying to secure him,” Simon said.

Guilbeau and Ewers have already been invited to cap their high school careers in the All-American Bowl.

Yea we’ve had a real issue in our secondary recruiting lately

Sure, we landed some very good players under Jason Washington, but Valai's energy is at another level and he looks to be a better coach.  Guys like Jackson, Harris, Thompson, Driver, Kerr, Biddle and Hullaby all have genuine interest.

Lol Valai is one game into his coaching career. Let's pump the breaks a bit

Yeah Washington literally landed the highest-ranking DB class in recruiting history in 2018, lets not crown Valai quite yet.

Forget it. Lemon turd’s rolling.
