Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

The recruiting efforts of the Texas Longhorns in football and basketball are ongoing with the football staff due to hit the road starting today.

Inside Texas provides some early morning nuggets in both sports.

The latest on 5-star Denver Harris
By Eric Nahlin

On3 five-star cornerback Denver Harris (Houston North Shore) took in the wild LSU v. Florida game on Saturday. Normally a win over the Gators would dominate the LSU news cycle, but in recent days it’s become known head coach Ed Orgeron will not return next season. That offers tumult among recruits who are seriously considering the Tigers.

Inside Texas has mentioned LSU as a player for Harris, but more on the periphery behind Texas and Alabama. LSU does indeed have a good ‘in’ here but the coaching change benefits both Texas and Alabama.

There’s a good chance LSU corners coach Corey Raymond will be retained so we’re not entirely ruling out LSU at this time, however we still feel this is a Texas / Bama affair.

The Texas losses haven’t helped but to this point they aren’t crippling. Texas might still be the most likely destination if the staff can turn big leads into wins.

Denver, like many recruits, is paying close attention to both Texas and what happens in Baton Rouge.

While we don’t believe in packaged deals for the most part, there is a small group of elite Houston area prospects staying in close contact to gauge each others‘ temperature. Great players want to play with great players.

Not all the schools overlap, but Texas does, at least for now.

Texas continues pursuit of Ohio State commit
The Texas Longhorns staff continues its pursuit of On3 5-star cornerback and Ohio State verbal Terrance Brooks (Little Elm, Texas). The 6-foot, 185-pounder with an 80-inch wingspan attended the Red River Showdown with his girlfriend, and the communication has only increased since that time.

Brooks is also still in communication with Alabama and Oregon. If the DFW defensive back was to flip down the line, Texas would currently get the nod over Alabama. The Crimson Tide received a commit from cornerback and Miami flip Trequon Fegans (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) October 18. Alabama is also considered the favorite for 4-star Earl Little jr. (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage), and is in the hunt for Harris.

Texas still recruiting TreVonte’ Citizen
Since the firing of Ed Orgeron, the Texas staff has been in contact with On300 running back and LSU verbal TreVonte’ Citizen (Lake Charles, La.Lake Charles College Prep). Brandon Harris was the first to reach out to the 4-star running back. Citizen was a favorite of Stan Drayton dating back to early in Citizens junior season.

Should Texas and Jaydon Blue (Klein, Texas/Cain) mutually part ways, this communication makes plenty of sense.

Citizen told On3 Tuesday night that he will be patient with the LSU coaching search. With that said, his phone is constantly ringing. Texas A&M has also been calling quite a bit. Other SEC schools have reached out as well.

Blue is going to end up like Zach Evans. He will go from having power 5 offers from all the big boys to signing with TCU or some shit. Hope that kid figures shit out soon.

Obviously there's the not playing his senior season bullshit, but has more come up since then?  I haven't seen it if it has

@Getafix What does Ears to the Streets have on the latest with big name prospects. My guess is the group Gerry is referring to is Perkins, Harris, Dewberry, Banks and Anderson are keeping tabs.

Makes me so angry we couldn't get 1 W the past 2 weeks.

Unless those prospects think they are the missing piece to those 2 wins

He did, but the question was do you want to meet South Austin's mom? He's really pulled all the stops out on this recruitment.

Five flip targets from the 2022 newly-updated Top247

Mike Roach

The Longhorns are looking to close the No. 4 class in the nation strong. They still have several uncommitted prospects to pursue along with a few who are committed elsewhere they are hoping to flip. With the new Top247 update live, here are five flip targets on the list for the Longhorns.

Kelvin Banks, OL, Humble Summer Creek (Committed to Oregon)

Prev Rank: 34

New Rank: 22

Texas is working every last angle to flip the Houston offensive tackle, but it won’t be easy. Banks and his family are tight with Oregon and the Ducks’ coaching staff. Texas is working to get Banks back on campus to turn the heat up on him in the event he decides to look around anymore.

Bryce Anderson, S, Beaumont West Brook (Committed to Texas A&M)

Prev Rank: 64

New Rank: 51

The Longhorns lost Anderson after a back-and-forth battle with Texas A&M throughout the spring and summer. Texas hasn’t stopped working on the four-star defensive back since that time and are trying to pry him away from College Station. Texas will continue to push through the wire in hopes of landing the speedy Golden Triangle defender.

Terrance Brooks, CB, Little Elm (Committed to Ohio State)

Prev Rank: 65

New Rank: 65

Brooks is another committed defensive back Terry Joseph is working to flip in this class. Brooks attended the Texas-OU game and remains in contact with the Texas coaching staff. He maintains a strong commitment to the Buckeyes, but Texas continues to work on him down the stretch.

Devin Brown, QB, Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon (Committed to USC)

Prev Rank: 179

New Rank: 66

A new target on the board for Texas, Brown is now in the sights of AJ Milwee and Steve Sarkisian. The USC commit has been looking elsewhere following the firing of Clay Helton. Texas will host Brown next month for an official visit as they look to close on a second quarterback in this class.

Jaleel Skinner, TE, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy (Committed to Alabama)

Prev Rank: 77

New Rank: 80

Texas hosted Skinner over the weekend, and while it seems that the highly-rated tight end is still firm in his pledge to Alabama, Texas will continue to shoot its shot for the lanky pass-catcher. Something big would likely have to happen in this recruitment for Skinner to flip, but Texas won’t give in.

Where Texas stands with uncommitted targets in the newly-updated Top247

Mike Roach

Spoiler

Where Texas stands with uncommitted targets in the newly-updated Top247

Mike Roach

Evan Stewart, WR, Frisco Liberty

Prev Rank: No. 8

New Rank: No. 4

The Longhorns hosted Stewart over the weekend, and though his recruitment has been full of ebbs and flows, Texas has been one of the constants for the five-star prospect. Florida and Alabama have also been factors while LSU and Texas A&M sit on the periphery.

Harold Perkins, LB, Cy-Park

Prev Rank: No. 16

New Rank: No. 5

Texas has been trying to make a push with Perkins who seems to be down to Texas, Texas A&M and LSU at the moment. While a few other schools are coming in and out, those three have been the programs he’s focused on. Texas has been able to generate a lot of momentum this fall, and landing Perkins would provide Pete Kwiatkowski with an elite defender.

Devon Campbell, OL, Arlington Bowie

Prev Rank: No. 24

New Rank: No. 23

One of the most important prospects remaining on the board, Campbell is a potential instant impact up front. Texas has been near the front of the pack since the beginning of this recruitment and though programs like Oklahoma, USC and Alabama continue to push, sources near him still feel that the Longhorns hold strong footing.

Denver Harris, CB, North Shore

Prev Rank: No. 22

New Rank: No. 33

The Longhorns are zeroed in on the Houston cornerback to add to their secondary class. Texas and Alabama have been the top two for a while though a recent visit to LSU could invigorate the Tigers depending on who they hire to replace Ed Orgeron. Harris sees opportunity for immediate playing time at Texas which makes the Longhorns a good candidate.

Omari Abor, EDGE, Duncanville

Prev Rank: No. 12

New Rank: No. 36

Texas seemed to be gaining some steam with Abor when they hosted him in the summer, but they haven’t been able to get the elite pass rusher back on campus. Ohio State and Alabama remain the most dangerous programs in the mix for him, but Chris Gilbert is keeping Texas alive in the background.

Earnest Greene, OL, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco

Prev Rank: No. 67

New Rank: No. 41

Greene is coming off of his Texas official visit where he raved about the experience and time with the coaching staff. Georgia and Ohio State are the two biggest obstacles for Texas with a heavy amount of Crystal Balls on the Bulldogs. Texas made a huge impact this weekend and would love to close the deal on the highly-ranked offensive lineman.

Kevin Coleman, WR, Saint Louis (MO.) Saint Mary’s

Prev Rank: No. 19

New Rank: No. 52

The recruitment of Coleman has run hot and cold with Texas. If the Longhorns get him on campus, they could become a bigger player for him, but he’s yet to make it to Austin since visits became available. Florida State holds the Crystal Ball lead, and this one appears to be fading for Texas.

Jacoby Mathews, S, Ponchatoula (LA.)

Prev Rank: No. 54

New Rank: No. 62

Mathews took his official visit to Austin over the weekend and Texas did a strong job. There have been times through the recruitment where it felt Texas could be close to landing the elite defender, but he’s going to stretch this recruitment out as far as he can. Texas will have to outlast several other elite programs to sign him.

Quency Wiggins, DL, Baton Rouge (LA.) Madison Prep

Prev Rank: No. 98

New Rank: No. 97

The Longhorns keep hanging around for the long edge rusher and hosted him over the weekend for an official visit. Alabama, LSU and Florida are the other big players in the recruitment, but Texas is certainly in the race for him.

Shazz Preston, WR, St. James (LA.)

Prev Rank: No. 100

New Rank: No. 106

LSU’s coaching woes have thrown this recruitment into confusion while Georgia and Alabama also remain big possibilities. Texas would love to see Preston back on campus to feel better about its chances, but they are hanging on thanks to his relationship with Steve Sarkisian.

Lander Barton, LB, Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton

Prev Rank: No. 187

New Rank: No. 134

Texas took a big shot at Barton in September hosting him for an official visit, and if he ultimately chooses to leave Utah, Texas could be the possible destination. Texas coaches will be in Utah this week to see him and they are pushing hard to close the deal on the rangy linebacker.

Kam Dewberry, OL, Humble Atascocita

Prev Rank: No. 225

New Rank: No. 135

Dewberry is a big target for Kyle Flood and the Longhorns are working on landing the last official visit for the big offensive lineman. Texas A&M, Oklahoma, LSU and Ohio State have been able to take their shots for him, but Texas has immediate playing time to offer.

Neto Umeozulu, OL, Allen

Prev Rank: No. 220

New Rank: No. 209

Umeozulu is yet another player in the picture for Texas on the offensive line. The four-star offensive lineman hasn’t taken many official visits, and while USC held an early lead, most near him think he will stay close to home. Alabama could be a factor depending on how they push down the stretch.

Mike at Night: Scattershooting on Texas recruiting

Mike Roach

— I spoke to a source near 2024 Burleson quarterback Dylan Raiola this evening. The 2024 passer just got back from Athens where Georgia impressed him on the trip. Raiola has been to Athens four times as summer baseball took him to the Atlanta area for several tournaments and they wanted to get back during the season. Raiola received a 247Sports Crystal Ball in favor of the Dawgs today, and while I think a decision is still far off, Georgia is going to be a strong contender for his services. The Bulldogs offered early, they've recruited him hard, and an endorsement from family friend Matt Stafford didn't hurt. That said, Texas still stands tall in this one. The Longhorns did well when he visited for the Texas Tech game and he's expected to return for another game in November. The Raiola's were in Austin last Thursday night to see Dylan's sister who plays volleyball at TCU and they were able to talk with some of the football coaches at the volleyball game. Early on, this looks like a showdown between Sarkisian and Kirby Smart.

— I spoke to a source near four-star Atascocita offensive lineman Kam Dewberryrecently. He's circling in on a final official visit, and that will either go to Alabama or Texas. At this point, I feel he's leaning toward visiting Austin with it, but that has yet to be announced officially. On the recruiting front, Texas is still pushing hard for Dewberry who would fill a big need upfront. I was told he's a fan of Kyle Flood and feels he could be developed under this coaching staff. Texas could make a late push with a strong visit if they are able to get him to campus.

— Coming into this year, AJ Milwee was a total unknown as a recruiter. Through this point, I'd say he's developing a good reputation. Milwee handles the day-to-day recruitments of all the quarterbacks on the board, and he's drawn strong reviews from those close to Arch Manning, Maalik Murphy, Julian Sayin and Dylan Raiola. Milwee has also made a name for himself recruiting the Austin area and parts of west Texas. Folks I've spoken with say he comes off as genuine and honest while showing a warm personality and a serious knowledge about the game.

I don’t think you should be surprised. Sark and Milwee know how much of a project Murphy is, and Brown has been just as good in camps and better on the field.

Surprised in the fact that its a big ask in my opinion, especially with how quickly the locked up Murphy.

Devin Brown is seriously interested in Texas and Texas won't let Murphy's commitment stop them from taking him. They also feel really good about the Arch recruitment, so you have to believe they simply do not feel very good about their outlook for what is currently on campus.

I'm tired of fighting.

I'm still going with the Seven Win Steve thread title being bad juju.

I know there is a lot that is not right with the program but I think recruiting is actually one area where Sark is at least meeting expectations and could be cut the littlest bit of slack.

But don't get me started on the obvious fail of not playing Alfred Collins more earlier in the year.

The title of this thread will get unceremoniously worse if you continue to pin Sarkisian's personal failures on the naming of this thread. I enjoy chaos and lighting things on fire.

Also, Sarkisian and crew aren't meeting expectations in recruiting right now. They're trending towards whiffing on major OL targets that could be building blocks. We have no idea how they're going to close overall, but there is a ton of risk on it right now. The current recruiting rankings mean precisely dick.
