Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

No Harris or Stewart. Winfield would be meh. Ewers shouldn't be on the list because he would be a transfer.

I hope we hit some home runs in the transfer portal, bigger hit rate potential than recruits and could have more immediate impact. Worthy had an unbelievable season, but we can’t expect that from most freshmen. The fact the he came in as late as he did (not an early enrollee), grasped the playbook so quickly, and obviously excelled, is pretty fucking amazing.

Saying Winfield is meh, is retarded. Yeah he's not Evan Stewart but not many are.

We need more guys like Stewart or the LSU guy to compete with Bama. We will get our asses kicked with a class full of the second tier guys.

What LSU guy? There are only 1-2 Evan Stewart types a year.

“we need the best guys to compete with Bama”

no fucking shit but when you don’t get them you get a guy like Winfield. He isn’t meh at all and you’re being retarded.

This class would give us 28 commits (not counting Ewers, who is a transfer) and a 292.32

Good enough for a top 5 class most years.

2 can count back to 2021 class right since we only took 23?

So 28-2= 26
26 + 7  transfers for 33?

We are currently at 21 commits.

Bama? We’ve got three recruiting classes on campus that have never beaten Iowa State, two that have never beaten Kansas. You’re setting yourself up for disappointment if your expectation for the Bama game is to be competitive. Focus on the tailgate.

This post from @Shonen says we only have 1 counter left for 2021 - but we already have enough space for 33.

Quote

The 33 new additions is because we had 1 unused initial counter from prior cycle which allows us to backcount on of this year's early enrollees +25 normal initial counters allowed +up to 7 additional initial counters on a 1:1 basis for attrition lost this cycle through 12/15 - we're well over the 7 to allow 7extra initial counters:

Jake Smith, Keithron Lee, Joshua Moore, Al'Vontae Woodard

Rafiti Ghirmai, Tyler Johnson

Terrence Cooks

Tyler Owens, Marques Caldwell

In-state programs making final pitches to five-star CB Denver Harris

In-state programs making final pitches to five-star CB Denver Harris
STEVE WILTFONG

Houston (Texas) North Shore five-star cornerback Denver Harris will host Steve Sarkisian for an in-home visit on Friday, Theadis Reagins tells 247Sports.

Reagins says the Longhorns are still in the thick of it to land the blue-chip prospect.

“I think the opportunity for him to go in with Josh Thompson leaving and some secondary guys leaving, having the opportunity to play early,” Reagins said.

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher and several staff members were in last weekend.

“It was a good meeting,” Reagins said. “I think Denver wanted to meet with them for the simple fact he didn’t take an official visit and hadn’t visited them much.”

The Aggies have made a move in this recruitment.

“A&M is intriguing for the simple fact it’s close to home in Texas, Denver has a very big family that’s important to him and the opportunity to see him play would b huge.

“He has a good relationship with Coach Rushing. Rushing has come in and done a great job recruiting him the last three or four weeks. He likes Jimbo’s resume as a head football coach.”

LSU was considered a major factor in this recruitment but lead recruiter and ace cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond was hired by Florida earlier this week.

“I know it changed the dynamics of that LSU deal,” Reagins said.

Reagins added that he thought Alabama was still very much in the mix for Harris and talked about what he is looking for in a school.

“I think it’s more the opportunity and development as a football player with Denver and he wants to win,” Reagins explained. “That will be huge for him.”

It just means that Hamilton was told (possibly by the player) that he'd informed the school he's transferring. The Friday or Saturday part is because the school has 2 days to enter him into the database by rule, right?

Yeah I believe once the player informs the school of his intentions it takes 24-48 hours for them to show up in the database.

From the 247 transfer portal page:

Quote

Under the college transfer policy, when a student-athlete informs a school that he wishes to transfer, that institution has two business days to enter that athlete's name into a national transfer portal. Once the student-athlete's name is in the database, other coaches from any school can contact that individual

Seems like a pretty significant absence ... the aggy 247 board is - interestingly = pretty quiet on the Elko stuff.

Seems like most fans don't think he'd leave for a job like Duke - that he'd wait for a better job - but the guy has interviewed for HC jobs every year and it sure looks like he's interested in this one.

He skipped the Harris in-home for a second round of interviews in Vegas.

I get him wanting to play early, but I don't think he's played all year after his ACL injury from last year. He's a freak athlete, but going to take a lot for him to be on the field in 2022 no matter where he goes.

From what I can tell the only reason Duke hasn’t hired him yet is Tony Elliott’s Hamlet performance with UVA and staying at Clemson. Seems like Elliott is probably Duke’s first choice. I don’t think the Jason Garrett stuff is going anywhere.

Everyone else may be in the know, but I had no idea who “Theadis Reagins” was, so I googled. He was Harris’ sophomore and Junior year DB coach at North Shore before taking the head coaches job at Royal. (I’m an old, when did they stop calling it Brookshire Royal?)

The Athletic: National recruiting big board: The 10 most impactful uncommitted 2022 prospects — and predictions where they will end up

relevant:

Quote

2. CB Denver Harris

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Houston North Shore
Ranking: No. 17 overall, No. 3 cornerback
Considering: LSU, Texas A&M, Texas and Alabama

The buzz: For a while, this appeared to be a good, old-fashioned Texas vs. Texas A&M battle. But Alabama got involved. So did LSU. That’s what you can expect with any top-tier prospect from the Houston area. The Aggies, however, have done a tremendous job in Houston behind Jimbo Fisher and now seem primed to win the 2022 recruiting crown. Winning this battle would be a huge step in actually doing it. Coming into the week, it seemed like Harris was down to LSU and Texas A&M, but on Wednesday, LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond left to take a job on Billy Napier’s staff at Florida. Now, Texas A&M looks to be in the driver’s seat with one of the most talented prospects in the 2022 class.

Prediction: Texas A&M

5. OL Devon Campbell

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Arlington (Texas) Bowie
Ranking: No. 10 overall, No. 1 interior offensive lineman
Considering: Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, USC and LSU

The buzz: Texas fans have noticed the tear Texas A&M has been on in recent months. How do you think it makes the Longhorns feel? Steve Sarkisian was supposed to bring Texas back, but all that’s happened so far is a 5-7 season that featured a loss to Kansas and less-than-desirable recruiting results. Campbell is a crucial target for Texas. The Longhorns’ 2022 class currently has 21 commitments and ranks No. 7 nationally, but it has only one top-100 prospect and no five-stars. Landing Campbell won’t lessen the pain of getting smoked by the Aggies in this cycle, but it would still be a good sign for Texas fans.

Prediction: Texas

6. SAF Jacoby Mathews

The particulars: Four-star prospect of Ponchatoula (La.) High
Ranking: No. 36 overall, No. 4 safety
Considering: Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, USC and LSU

The buzz: LSU already has commitments from the top two players in Louisiana and is in position to potentially land eight of the top 10 in its own state. Mathews was once part of the Tigers’ 2022 class, but he decommitted in the summer. Texas A&M has gained a lot of traction, but things the Tigers are still in the mix after the Brian Kelly hire. Mathews isn’t announcing until Jan. 2 at the Under Armour All-America Game, so this will be a nice little case study for Kelly to see what recruiting Louisiana is all about. Kids like Mathews are usually Tigers. Can Kelly keep that trend going, or will Texas A&M continue its tear?

Prediction: Texas A&M

and

7. OT Kelvin Banks

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Humble (Texas) Summer Creek
Ranking: No. 15 overall, No. 2 offensive tackle
Considering: Texas and Texas A&M

The buzz: Banks committed to Oregon in July but backed off that pledge after Mario Cristobal departed for Miami. Given that happened so late in the process, it seems reasonable to expect that Banks will stay close to home. And that means another Texas A&M vs. Texas battle. Watching this play out will be fun, especially this late in the process.

Prediction: Texas

9. DL Omari Abor

The particulars: Four-star prospect of Duncanville (Texas) High
Ranking: No. 38 overall, No. 4 edge rusher
Considering: Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M

The buzz: In the early portions of this recruiting cycle, Ohio State seemed well-positioned to win the recruiting crown. But the Buckeyes saw five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers reclassify to the 2021 class and enroll early (only to transfer after the season). And they also suffered a decommitment from five-star Jaheim Singletary of Jacksonville (Fla.) Riverside, who is now committed to Georgia. Things have been slow for Ohio State, which finally got some good news last Wednesday when five-star safety Sonny Styles of Pickerington (Ohio) Central reclassified to the 2022 class. Ohio State, which has the No. 4 class in the country, now has 18 commitments, eight of whom are top-100 players. The Buckeyes, though, could use a recruiting win, and Abor seems like a likely addition — at the moment — to their class. That would be a huge get for Larry Johnson and Ohio State’s defensive line, which has made a habit of featuring a dominant edge rusher for much of the past decade.

Prediction: Ohio State

4. QB Nick Evers

The particulars: Four-star prospect of Flower Mound (Texas) High
Ranking: No. 156 overall, No. 10 quarterback
Considering: Oklahoma, Ole Miss and others

The buzz: Evers was a longtime Florida commitment who was once one of the leaders of the Gators’ 2022 class. Though he remained in the class after Florida fired head coach Dan Mullen, it seemed like only a matter of time before Evers got back out on the open market. That time came Tuesday, eight days before the early signing period. Now Evers is the highest-rated uncommitted quarterback prospect in this cycle. Shortly after he broke ties with Florida, Evers landed offers from Oklahoma and Ole Miss. It’ll be very entertaining to watch Evers’ recruitment play out over the next week, especially given his previous plan was to enroll early. Will it be Ole Miss or Oklahoma? Or will another school jump in out of nowhere and sign this talented quarterback?

Prediction: Oklahoma

National recruiting big board: The 10 most impactful uncommitted 2022 prospects — and predictions where they will end up

The early signing period begins next Wednesday. Many of the top high school prospects have already selected their destination, but some of the most highly ranked recruits have yet to make a decision.

This is a list of prospects we consider the most “impactful” uncommitted prospects, in order of importance. “Impactful” can mean a lot of things, from importance to a specific school, a big regional recruit, a trend-setter or just plain having an interesting recruitment.

It’s almost time to fire up the fax machines!

1. CB Domani Jackson

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
Ranking: No. 7 overall and No. 2 cornerback in the 247Sports Composite
Considering: Alabama and USC

The buzz: Jackson was once a longtime USC commit but backed off his pledge after coach Clay Helton was dismissed. At that point, it seemed as though another talented California prospect was going to leave the Pac-12 footprint. That could still happen. But with Lincoln Riley now in town, USC is back in the picture. Shortly after Riley got hired, Jackson eliminated Michigan and announced that he’d be focusing solely on USC and Alabama. This is exactly where Riley has to step in and make USC the West Coast power again. Obviously, Alabama and Nick Saban are going to get who they want most of the time, but can Riley, who has earned three five-star commitments (two from 2023 prospects) since he took the USC job, add another elite prospect? USC’s 2022 class currently has four commitments and ranks No. 101 nationally. It may be too close to the early signing period for Riley to salvage this class, but convincing Jackson to come back into the fold would be quite the get. Every five-star California prospect is important for the Trojans’ rebuild.

Prediction: Alabama

2. CB Denver Harris

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Houston North Shore
Ranking: No. 17 overall, No. 3 cornerback
Considering: LSU, Texas A&M, Texas and Alabama

The buzz: For a while, this appeared to be a good, old-fashioned Texas vs. Texas A&M battle. But Alabama got involved. So did LSU. That’s what you can expect with any top-tier prospect from the Houston area. Now, Texas A&M looks to be in the driver’s seat with one of the most talented prospects in the 2022 class.

Prediction: Texas A&M

3. OT Josh Conerly Jr.

The particulars: Five-star prospect of Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach
Ranking: No. 23 overall, No. 3 offensive tackle
Considering: Michigan, Washington, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, USC and Oregon

The buzz: In the 2021 cycle, there were three top-10 players nationally in the Seattle area, and Washington landed only one — five-star quarterback Sam Huard. The other two — receiver Emeka Egbuka and defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau — went to Ohio State. Jimmy Lake, the Washington head coach who missed on the golden opportunity to add a trio of local talents to the roster, is no longer leading the Huskies. New head coach Kalen DeBoer has a chance to do something Lake didn’t do, and he made a savvy move earlier this week when he hired Michigan recruiting staffer Courtney Morgan away from the Wolverines to be his director of player personnel. That could play a factor in the Conerly recruitment, especially considering that many of the schools he’s considering (USC, Oregon and Oklahoma) also have new coaches in charge. Can DeBoer get off on the right foot by keeping Conerly home?

Prediction: Washington

Prediction: Texas A&M

8. SAF Zion Branch

The particulars: Four-star prospect of Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman
Ranking: No. 47 overall, No. 6 safety
Considering: USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Oregon

The buzz: Three of the four schools in this chase have had coaching changes in the last month. Ohio State is the one that hasn’t, and the Buckeyes have been considered the team to beat for much of this recruitment. But that has changed recently, with USC emerging as the likely landing spot. Branch’s commitment is influential not only because he’s a top-50 player nationally, but also because his younger brother, Zachariah Branch, is a five-star receiver in the 2023 class. Riley’s quest is to make USC the “it” place for West Coast prospects. Beating the Buckeyes out for Branch seems imminent, and it would make quite the statement.

Prediction: USC

That would be a huge get for Larry Johnson and Ohio State’s defensive line, which has made a habit of featuring a dominant edge rusher for much of the past decade.

Prediction: Ohio State

10. WR Kevin Coleman

The particulars: Four-star prospect of St. Louis St. Mary’s
Ranking: No. 44 overall, No. 4 receiver
Considering: Florida State, Oregon, USC, Alabama, Texas and Arizona State

The buzz: Florida State’s 2022 class already has commitments from two five-star prospects in cornerback Travis Hunter of Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill and safety Sam McCall of Lakeland (Fla.) Lake Gibson. Though there has been constant speculation that Hunter could flip to Georgia, the Seminoles are less than a week away from getting the nation’s No. 1 player into their program. But Florida State needs to keep adding top-tier talent if it hopes to return to national prominence, and Coleman seems to be a major Seminoles lean at the moment. Head coach Mike Norvell, who had a recent in-home visit with Coleman, needs to close on this out-of-state prospect.

Prediction: Florida State
