What Are Your Top Rivalries In College Football That are No More?

Vic Mackey

Found this on Twitter. His criteria is rivalries that no longer happen. If they are playing next year, they are not on this list (don't agree with this). So OU/Nebraska is not listed. I think they play this coming season. First time in a decade. But the annual rivalry is dead.

If we weren't playing them next year easily the most glaring omission would be us vs the pigs. You young 'uns just don't know....just as much hate as OU and their fans are even worse.

It must be the aforementioned stupid rule that teams playing this year don’t count regardless of how much the rivalry is otherwise dead.

I had the entire states of Arkansas and Oklahoma as part of my territory for work many moons ago. I learned to never step foot in Arkansas in October, but I never hesitated going to Oklahoma.

I can assure everyone that noone in Arkisaw gave a special shit about Tech.

I’ll take this as a complement.

Hate for Arky was greater than hate for OU when I was growing up

That list is stupid. I’d say my top 5 would be:

1 Oklahoma vs Nebraska

2 Texas vs Texas A&M

3 Pittsburgh vs West Virginia

4 Miami vs Florida

5 Kansas vs Missouri

Honorable Mention:

Texas vs Arkansas

Yeah, if it wasn't for the ludicrous playing in 2021 stipulation, following would be top five:

  • Okie/Neb
  • Texas/Arkie

Top 10 should have:

  • Penn St/Pitt

Was Ark/Tech even a rivalry?  Should be Tech/aggy.

That's a good list (but nobody cares about KU/Mizzu

I'd add MSU v. Notre Dame
(they played every year from 1948 - 2013, and that in 1954 ND supported MSU going into the B1G which seems weird by today's standards as the Irish weren't even a member school)

Honorable mention???  I'm guessing you're not old enough to remember the SWC days.  The Texas/Arkansas rivalry was every bit as heated and hate-filled as the OU rivalry, but with the added spice of conference championship (and occasional national championship) ramifications.  Add to that the home-field atmosphere, and the fact that the game was traditionally played the week after the OU game, and you've got a college rivalry game that really takes a back seat to nobody.  And fuck aggy.  They never were anything more than annoying fucks who were fun to abuse on an annual basis.

so i am hoping the proper interpretation of the list in the op which the op didn't quite understand is...

just putting a bunch of random games that no one really gives a shit about besides may be texas-tamu to make a joke about uncompetitive the michigan-ohio state and alabama-tennessee games have become?

if so, meh.  would have been funnier if they would have buried them a bit.

Georgia southern wouldn’t even be in the top 20 for my UGA guesses

Also ndsu UM isn’t a rival after ndsu beat their ass the last 2 games. Last win was 10 years ago. All gopher fans do with this rivalry is talk about how much they can’t stand ndsu fans, say they don’t care at all about ndsu or JV(fcs) football, boast when ndsu loses a game and then whine why ndsu gets high draft picks from recruits UM missed on.

And we still have a commanding lead in that series. Add that Texas A&M generally was always played on Thanksgiving and the house divided on Turkey day it makes it more.

I get it you old fucks like Arkansas but that shit hasn't been a thing in 30 years so yeah fuck it. Honorable mention.

That 2004 win on the road was one of my favorite games from that era. Such a hard fought win that night. VY was still young and coming into his own.

I'm gonna go with Texas - Arkansas, particularly in the Sixties when it was Saint Darrell on our side and Frank Broyles on theirn. Absolutely nothing I've seen since then really approaches, much less exceeds, that rivalry. Certainly not 0U or aTm. Lemme tell you how chickenshit it got: Arky went so far as to sell their band seating in (trying to recall...) '62 or '64, and we were stupid enough to let them put their fucking band actually on the field surface from the southwest corner along the sidelines, up to behind our benches. The '62 game we won by taking the ball away from them near our goalline, with about eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, trailing 3-0. We then spent almost the entire remaining time driving the length of the field, 19 or 20 plays, without a single pass, and converting two or three fourth downs along the way. Tommy Ford, AKA T-bird, scored from the 3-yard line with under a minute to play. 7-3, Texas.

I think the ambulance came into the stadium from the north end, drove around the track, and stretchered a heart attack off to Brack three times.

That, my friend... that is a by God rivalry.

[Aside: That ('62 - I think '64 was the first full sub rules) was still in the days of limited substitution rules, which prevented a player from leaving the field and coming back onto the field in the same quarter - you kicked with one of the guys on the field, then you stayed on and played D, basically no specialists at all, other than what you played on O and what you played on D. Some teams would have one guy who could kick FG and XP reliably, and might sub in for that, very late in the game or close to the end of a quarter, but mostly, when possession changed, you stayed out there and played both ways.]

[Aside: Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson were players on that Razorback squad. Yes, that Jerry and that Jimmy.]

What I like about the list is that While A&M was always our second biggest rivalry to Oklahoma.  OF course we were A&M's biggest rival, but the A&M/ Baylor rivalry was something the Aggies always wanted to pretend didn't exist.  There it is... right at #8. 😉

Why is TN v Bama on the list?  They play every year, including next year.

The joke is that it and Michigan vs Ohio State are so one sided it is no longer a rivalry.

Anyway I know I feel pathos every year knowing the fierce Tulane/LSU game will not be played.

Yup.  The entire list was created for the sole purpose of dunking on Michigan and UTenn.

Probably because it was a conference game.  The ou game was purely bragging rights.  That said, fuck ou.

Agree with all of those except 4 should be Catholics-Convicts.  It's not often a rivalry takes on the dueling characters of the entire nation.

I do miss marking the year by remembering how the Sparty game went.

OU vs Nebraska.  Those were great games when I was growing up.  Lotsa blizzards/ shitty weather, wishbone out the ass, and almost always something bigger on the line.

As far as Tech vs aggy, it was great.  Fuck em though.  It's just fine if we never play again.
