23. Match Time Limit

Best of five matches shall be limited to one hour from the time the match is called. Best of three matches shall be limited to 35 minutes from the time the match is called.  23.1 If the specified time limit expires before the match has been completed, an official will announce to the players that a ten minute overtime period will begin at that time. If the overtime period ends before the match has been completed, the winner of the match shall be the player or team which has won the most games, or if the teams have an equal number of games, it shall be the team that has scored the most points in the game in progress, after the ball in play at the time that the overtime period expires has been scored. If the teams have won an equal number of games and scored an equal number of points after this ball has been scored, one more ball shall be played to determine the winner of the match.  23.2 Time outs called within the regular time limit of a match shall be counted against the total amount of time left to play. However, time outs do not count against the ten minutes in the overtime period (a time out would then stop the clock).  23.3 Official time outs do count against the total amount of time left to play.  23.4 Enforcement of this rule is the responsibility of the Tournament Director.

People always complained about the NFL coin flip rule, that it wasn't fair who got the ball first.  Now it's automatic.  Do you hand the ball to the other team?  Forced to score?  Have to use your timeouts on offense?  Changes the entire fucking dynamic of the last 2 mins....No more squatting on the ball, playing for overtime.

So if a team scores with :01 left are they the last to have the ball or the team that receives the kick?

edit: and in this scenario, what if both teams refuse to pick up the ball on the kickoff because they don't want to start OT on defense? The game could continue indefinitely

Since this is the terrible idea thread, I'm pro-chaos and pro-spectacle. I'm not all that interested in fairness or the sanctity of the game.

1. Have each team send out both offense and defense.

2. Play starts simultaneously on both 30s.

3. No field goals.

4. Whoever scores first wins.

5. If you turn it over (on downs or otherwise), the opposing team gets the ball at the same 30 going the same direction. This means that one team could have both possessions at the same time.

6. If a fumble recovery or interception return crosses the 50, all 44 on-field players are eligible to participate (if they aren't otherwise occupied with their own play).

6a. If a play crosses the 50 into an active play, both plays will continue. If both plays score, whichever play scores first wins.

6b. If a play crosses the 50 into a dead ball, all on-field players can participate. The offense is free to snap the ball to start a play as well.

7. Players can switch ends of the field as they please between plays, but not during plays (except for cases where the ball crosses the 50). One side can't start with 10 players and sneak an unknown player from the other side. If you have both possessions, you can either use a backup QB or one QB on both ends as long as you don't get any delay of game penalties.

8. 50 yard line exception: if the offense has possession while the ball crosses the 50 (say the QB is scrambling), players must maintain the integrity of their side unless a turnover occurs. This means that teams with both possessions couldn't intentionally take a big loss to run extra offensive players against an undermanned defense.

That's actually one I hadn't thought of, and what if the score is the last play of the game. hmmm, back to smoking pot again.

Your idea is too easily exploitable. Teams would intentionally turn the ball over so they get to start on offense in OT.

Aside from that, I don't get it.  It seems very arbitrary.  An aggy overtime makes more sense to me: just add extra time and extend the game as if it's just another quarter.

Well, I believe in Vishnu... the clit...man-scaped junk... the arch of a woman's foot...passes behind the line of scrimmage... low fiber... cheap bourbon... that the novels of Bret Easton Ellis are sublime... That could actually make for some interesting late-game stategery. Team A has the ball on their own 35 with 1 second left, tie ball game. They hike it and the QB lays the ball on the ground. A defender wouldn't pick up the ball unless they knew they had a good chance of scoring on the play. So all offensive players step away from the ball daring the defender to pick it up. How far back should the offensive players stand?

Isn't defense chosen by the coin flip winner something like 95% of the time (unless Charlie Strong tries to defer)?  Seems to me it would cause teams to sit on the ball instead of taking a chance

I assumed college football overtime...didn't think about NFL

I don't understand why this has to be so complicated.  If the score is tied at the end of regulation, there is a coin flip to determine who gets first possession in OT.  No dillydallying over whether you want the ball, or play defense, or defer, etc.  You win the coin flip, you get the ball.  Kickoff and play as you would at the beginning of any other new quarter of play.  Each team gets at least one offensive possession.  If, after each team has had one offensive possession, the game is still tied, it becomes sudden death.  It's really not that difficult.

Now this is what I'm talking about.  Offense deep in their own territory.  Throw a bomb right? If you score great, if it gets picked, who cares.....UNLESS the other coach put in the kick6 team from Auburn and returns that fucker for a score.  I tried ta told ya it changes everything!!!!

And are you really gonna just lay the ball down? Really? REALLY? Ok, maybe you do.

What's the problem with the current college system?  Games can go too long?

it's artificial-- the purest way to decide who wins the game is to keep playing the game until somebody wins, but because of player safety concern, that's not really an option.

But, that would be my preferred method. Fifteen minutes of sudden death.

That's just the NFL rule, without the "td on first possession wins" piece. But in that case, the coil flip winner would want to play defense first to know if they need a td or field goal to win. I guess a coin flip is 50-50 so the refs could just assign home team heads away team tails and the teams would hope they lose the flip.

All of the current systems provide some advantage based on the coin flip. In college, you want to play defense first to know if you need a td or field goal. I still prefer a 2pt conversion shootout. No advantage in going first or second. Each time you're out there you need to convert the 2pt conversion. Should go faster too.

If I'm on offense, I definitely put the ball on the ground after I put all 11 players between the ball and the goalline. The question then becomes does the defense pick it up? If I'm the defense I don't pick it up unless at least three offensive players are behind me.

I say keep playing the game as if it was the end of the third quarter, first team that scores wins. If they really, really insist on playing an artificial overtime, do what they do now except do it quickly and eliminate extra points (and maybe even field goals). Very few OTs will go beyond 2 possessions.

This is my thought exactly.  No 72-74, no disadvantage due to the coin flip, no innings.

Score

Kickoff

Force turnover

Profit
