Big K.R.I.T. is such a talented producer.

He's from Mississippi but is always paying homage to H-Town (as everyone should).

Whatchu know about lighters on dressers?

Music video is NSFW.

Big K.R.I.T. had the best verse on what I consider a modern-day best cyper (1 Train) and a cut I listen to all the time still to this day:

bwahahhaha okay this is funny @ztejas (comments are sending me).

My favorite track on a hugely underrated album.

I need OutKast to come out with new music - preferably album quality.

I lived in Memphis when this song was released. Real depressing shit - don't listen if you're not in a good headspace. But oh that outro by J. Cole, how it got me shook!

52 yr old white guy here from smaller town TX and grew up listening to all the good rap.

I have zero tolerance for the rappers of this era but I will say I really like Saint Jhn’s music and beats. Not going to pretend that I know what the fuck he is saying but his music has a nice flow to it.

Saint JHN is fucking dope, dude. Glad that you appreciate him. While the world was burning is an all-time album for me. This track especially.

Came here to post this and say that I think that what Memphis was doing in the 1990s is the peak of hip-hop.

They unconsciously influenced the 2000s and 2010s and basically invented trap. Houston and Atlanta played a part but Memphis put it together and figured it out before anyone. They also gave a voice to female rappers over dark/murder beats before anyone else was willing to do so.

Tracks like this are an example.

You can talk East coast/West coast, Houston/Atlanta whatever but what Memphis did in the 90s, for me, basically set the tone for hip-hop for decades to come. And it feels like they set a delayed fuse.

It's the origin of so much of what has dominated airwaves since 2015ish. Migos may be the cutoff point.

For better or worse. I wouldn't argue either.

Danny Brown verse clears.

The girl I was seeing at the time really loved that track - probably the Jamie Foxx effect. There are so many good songs on that album. It's hard to say which one is the best, but I would pick this one because it's a solo track by Big Boi.

Somewhat underground stuff. I always die laughing to those freestyle rhymes.

I'm fucking with this.

Who is y'all's GOAT spitter? I'm gonna drop three songs here - these guys probably constitute my top 3 (Andre 3k's verse what I'm highlighting on the first one). Nas, Biggie, Pac round out my top 6.

Em clears for me.

It's funny because I used to not feel that way - I had Kendrick as my #1 all-time for awhile - but then I got sucked back in to some Em shit. Ultimately I think he's just untouchable.

Em vs. Kendrick is so tough for me. I think DNA is the greatest hip-hop song ever.

But Em has banger after banger. Kendrick could have never recorded this.

There's shit Kendrick did that Em could have never done, likewise.

A belated post. Should have posted it on June 27th.

RIP DJ Screw, Big Moe, and Big Pokey. And yes I make it a point to listen to the full freestyle at least once a year.

I love rap and its many subgenres, but there is nothing like a screwed up freestyle especially on a Sunday night!

This song is seminal to Houston rap: https://www.texasmonthly.com/culture/dj-screw-june-27-anniversary/

I just discovered this dude from Minneapolis a year or two ago. He owns his own independent label, Stophouse Records. He released a new album 6/26 and was running in 2nd place behind T.I.'s new album all last week on the billboard charts. He sold over 30k physical copies, plus all of the streaming. As the week closed out, he found out that he'd been "disqualified" from the billboards because he was selling CDs in a bundle (I bought a 3-pack for $25 with different album covers). He claims that this is a rule that was changed after he released the album; I have no idea how valid that statement is. Anyway, he makes some good music, imo.

Honestly couldn’t name a Lil Durk song but I have a morbid curiosity with that whole Chicago drill serial killer genre and this is I guess the thread for this - Lil Durk ruled innocent in the murder-for-hire charge (that he’s definitely guilty of). This was the revenge attempt for the killing of King Von which resulted in one death (although not of the target, Quando Rondo).

Durk has put out some exceptional music. That wasn't what I came here to post but I'll throw a Durk track in here real quick:

Yeah he probably killed some people but all of our politicians are pedophiles and rapists. Let that man make music.

I came here to post this one, and I guess I feel like this song doesn't deserve nearly enough credit. It's fucking genius hip-hop. Houston doesn't get enough credit in general, all the Atlanta shit is just lifted from the Houston 90s scene.

This album is fucking phenomenal. East Texas cat. I think he's the best rapper in Texas right now and really close to breaking through and making an all-time record. His stuff reminds me of Kendrick before he blew up.
