With the two host nations having troubles at the moment:

1) Colombia mired in social unrest (and already relinquished their games for the tournament)

2) Argentina going back into full lockdown due to a massive COVID spike right as their winter is about to start (June/July/August = Dec/Jan/Feb in The USA)

Copa America could be switched to the USA, as fears continue over the current coronavirus situation in South America.

[ MORE: How to watch PL in the USA ]

After being delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the tournament is due to kick off on June 12 in Argentina, but South America’s governing body CONMEBOL are desperately trying to find an alternative solution for the event as Argentina is currently in lockdown and all soccer game have been called off.

After Colombia and Argentina were originally scheduled to co-host the tournament, games will no longer be held in Colombia due to ongoing protests against the government.

All games will be played in Argentina, as things stand, although Chile, Ecuador and Venezuela have all offered to co-host the tournament. This situation is very fluid.

A report from Telemundo’s Diego Montalvan states that plans to host the entire tournament in the USA are gathering momentum, as Blu Radio in Colombia had the initial story.

Per Motalvan’s report, games would not be played in stadiums and cities hosting the 2021 Gold Cup games as CONCACAF would not want the two tournaments to clash at all.

Is moving the Copa America to the USA feasible?

With regards to the Gold Cup the dates overlap a little, but not much.

The Gold Cup is due to take place mostly in Texas, plus Orlando, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Phoenix from July 10 to August 1, while the Copa America is scheduled to take place from June 13 to July 10.

Of course, if the Copa America tournament is moved from Argentina at such short notice, and out of South America altogether, it would mean that a lot of logistical plans would have to be changed.

That would take extra time, and that could mean the tournament being pushed back a few weeks. On the face of it this makes sense.

Fans can attend games in pretty large numbers if the tournament is held in the USA, plus the Copa America Centenario was a huge success when it was held across the United States of America in the summer of 2016.

At least some fans would be able to attend, plus revenue could be generated through ticket sales and this temporary solution could suit the players and staff as the U.S. is in a much better situation in terms of vaccination rates than most of the world.

If they play these games in Texas, I am so buying tickets.  I already hit up my Brazilian and Columbian coworkers and all of them are going to go if any of these games end up in Texas or anywhere in the US.

I wish COPA and Gold Cup would just get dumped for a combined tournament every 4 years.   UEFA has 55 members and has the EUROS every 4.   CONMOBEL & CONCACAF have 45 members combined.    A 16 team tourney in the States is a no-brainier.  FIFA loves nothing more than money, and this a cash cow.   Actually, you could still have the Gold Cup or Copa on the year after the WC every 4 years.

ex:

2022 WC, 2023 GC & Copa, 2024 Gold Copa (or whatever they wanna call the combined CONCACAF/CONMOBEL tourney), 2025 WC Qualifying/Friendlies, 2026 WC (IN THE USA!), 2027 Gold Cup & Copa, 2028 Gold Copa, 2029 WC Qualifying, 2030 World Cup (Hopefully in Europe).....

conmebol have it really good.  with venezuela actually stepping up this century, there's no more dead weight.

concacaf carries all the trash in the western hemisphere and conmebol likes it that way.

mexico makes hay because they get 1/3rd of the spoils by carrying all the trash. and a combined confederation obliterates their aqqy-world-view of themselves.

the US is too stupid to put itself before anyone else in football.

the US could easily force the 2 confederations together, but the exhibition would have to align to the world calendar.

moebius loop wrapped in both tacos.....

CONMEBOL doesn't (normally) need CONCACAF or the US.

They have no desire to water their competition down for the US, especially when Mexico normally is one of the two guest nations.

CONMEBOL sells rights to the Copa America all over the world. Again, they don't need the US.

Two things:

1 - this doesn’t have anything to do with FIFA. It’s the American confederations.

2 - the biggest problem is that one tournament between 2 confederations means they split the money. And no way half that pot of that is worth it to CONMEBOL.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea, but the economics for those involved just isn’t there.

Uh, Western Sahara still can't get its national shit together and field a decent team?

Isreal stays with Europe because they murder fewer of their fans?

OFC shouldn't fucking exist, it's an annoying rounding error.

Suriname has more in common with the Netherlands than it does with South America.  Guyana has more in common with the Caribbean than it does with South America.  And French Guiana, has...well you get it.

Copa America left without hosts after tournament pulled from Argentina following surge in Covid cases

7b119900-33ff-11eb-bfdb-7285d8d09984

Argentina has been stripped of its Copa America fixtures, leaving the tournament without a host less than two weeks before the opening match.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) said the decision has been made “in view of the present circumstances”, amid a surge of Covid-19 cases in the country.

Argentina were originally set to co-host the tournament with Colombia, but the latter country was removed as hosts earlier this month due to anti-government protests...

Copa America has no host: Argentina dropped by CONMEBOL due to COVID-19 outbreak

SAO PAULO (AP) — Copa America is without a host country only two weeks before kickoff after South American soccer body CONMEBOL ruled out Argentina amid an increase in COVID-19 cases in the country.

The announcement Sunday night casts doubt on a tournament which has faced major hurdles since the start of the pandemic in March of last year.

CONMEBOL said on Twitter — and it was later confirmed by an official — that it was analyzing “the offer of other nations who showed interest in hosting the continental tournament,” without naming them. It also said a new host will be announced “soon.”...

Copa America in Argentina suspended over coronavirus surge

e31acf60-80f5-11eb-9fff-18c6b7043df9

Argentina's hosting of the Copa America football tournament has been suspended "in view of the current circumstances," CONMEBOL said on Sunday, as the country endures a record coronavirus surge.

The South American football body, which last week stripped Colombia of co-hosting duties over deadly unrest, said it was considering other offers to hold the tournament.

"CONMEBOL informs that in view of the current circumstances it has decided to suspend the organization of the Copa America in Argentina," the governing body tweeted.

"CONMEBOL is evaluating the offer of other countries that showed interest in hosting the continental tournament."

The Copa America was originally due to take place last year, but was postponed for 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials are expected to meet on Monday to decide on the next move for hosting the tournament.

An Argentine poll published on Friday found that most respondents were against holding the tournament as the country experiences its worst phase of the pandemic so far...

I also think that the USA was NOT chosen because it is too late to get visa clearance for all of the players and coaches, especially with COVID raging in the countries that they are coming from.

Brazil’s winter won’t drive as many players indoors to mix with the locals as Argentina’s will, but it is still a scary proposition.

I wonder how many European based players withdraw simply because it’s not worth it with World Cup qualifying on the horizon.

Quilmes beer, the Budweiser of Argentina, always has great commercials before major Cups. The one for the 2010 World Cup (in Spanish) was a classic. It featured Argentines talking up how great other countries were in Europe and how evolved they were from where Argentina is. Then halfway through, it switches to various groups of people in different countries in Europe where one person is telling the others about how seriously Argentines take soccer.

For this Copa America, Quilmes has a commercial that basically shows Columbia vs Argentina, the two countries that were supposed to host the event before shit hit the fan for Social Unrest in Colombia and COVID in Argentina and they moved the competition to Brazil, a country with Social Unrest AND COVID issues. (The opposing team could be Brazil, because they basically have the same uniform as Colombia. No identifying RED or GREEN is seen on the opponents jersey.)

The song is Ástor Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino", the tango that he wrote upon receiving news that his father had passed away back in Argentina while Ástor was working in New York.

A YouTube version of "Adios Nonino" is also what I posted on my FB page when my father passed away. No words, no photos, just that song.

Quilmes is tipping its fedora to EL D10S, up in heaven.

"Es la primera copa con dios en el cielo." / It is the first cup with God in heaven.

"Si hizo lo que hizo en la cancha, imaginate desde el cielo." / If he did what he did on the field, imagine [what he can do] from heaven.

Off to a great start

Indeed, on Saturday it was confirmed 12 Venezuela players and members of staff had tested positive for coronavirus, highlighting those worries.

It also prompted a swift rewriting of the competition rules, with teams now allowed unlimited substitutions during matches and being able to replace any of their 28-man squad throughout the tournament.
