Your cat is awesome. Damn straight

We have 2 cats and a dog.  Sometimes had a cat growing up-one super cool Siamese who lived to 20 years old that was a badass and a stone cold kills- but always had dogs for the most part.  Other than a Scottish fold we had when we first got married, these two, Jack and Skylar, are the two most chill, friendly, great cats.  Jack(the orange one) sleeps snuggled up with me pretty much every night.

Curious about people’s thoughts on bathing cats.  Our cats absolutely HATE getting bathed, hence we’ve probably only done it a half dozen times in their 10 year lives.  I think the general consensus is that it’s not really necessary unless it’s for medical reasons or if they get something bad on them…Theey clean themselves, and each other, all the time.  How necessary is it to give cats a bath?

I've considered getting Luna a kitten. I don't think she'd accept a full grown cat in her territory.

Yeah, our cat hasn't been great with the kitten. My wife thought the cat needed a companion, but the kitten kind of terrorizes her so I'm not so sure that companionship thing is working out so great. The cat now wants to be outside away from the kitten most of the time.

Luna is an 80 pound German shepherd. Just typing that makes me think it's a bad idea.

Cats don't really need companions, they're solo.  But, I suspect that once the kitten grows out of being a little terrorist, they'll be friends.

We had a similar dynamic with the youngest and oldest and they're pretty good buds now.  Although the younger one still occasionally terrorizes the old guy.

Your cat is not awesome.  They are little murdering fucks (I can get behind that) that will immediately start to eat you if you die in the house.  Every year those little land-sharks kill between a few billions birds and tens of billions of mammals/reptiles.  In Australia they are such a problem they hunt them like Texans hunt feral hogs.

The problem that I have is that the kitten is awesome and the cat - not so much.

So Jack got out one day for about an hour and ever since Hobbes tries to murder him (literally) if they are in the same room.
We’ve had to keep one of them locked in the bedroom and we switch them once a week. We’ve tried scent sprays, we’ve tried feeding them on opposite sides of the door so they can smell each other, etc. Nothing seems to work. They never had any issues other than some regular cat fights but nothing like this. Hobbes turns into a full blown rage monster and you have to wrap him in a towel to keep him from attacking you when he gets into Jack attack mode.
Any ideas?

We have a functionally identical video of our late cat.  We were advised to get a leash, so when he would go outside, he'd be under control.  We put the leash on, and then dragged him around the house....the laughter on that video is a thing of beauty.  The leash got donated to the shelter later that week.

I don't hate all cats.  Actually had a roommate with a pretty cool indoor/outdoor cat that always brought dead shit to the house.

So I had some side-piece over one night and she wouldn't leave.  We're upstairs, Madden NCAA is staring at me from across the room, and she mentions that she is allergic to cats so we have to kind of stay upstairs.  I "have to go to the bathroom".......grab my little furry wingman, rub that shedding little shit all over my shirt.....she's gone in less than 10 minutes!

Poor little dude wound up a ball of fur when they moved to Frisco and lived next to a greenbelt.  Probably a coyote.

Coyotes plural, usually. A decent sized house cat is usually a match for a solo coyote, a big mean one more than a match.

But coyotes like most dogs are pack hunters.

True.  They roam up here feasting off the billions of fat rabbits living off manicured lawns.  Sirens set them off and you get a sense for how many there are.  Saw one the other day strolling down the middle of the street during elementary school kid drop-off.  Zero fucks given.

Chapter 6 of the Houston Municipal Code is the Section that covers animals.  Here are a few quotes from there:

Domestic animal means any beast or bird in common use that has been bred or trained to need and accept the care of humans and to live in a tame condition, including, but not limited to, livestock, goat, swine, dog, cat, fowl, or other beast or bird.

Sec. 6-4. - Running at large of domestic animals or fowl prohibited.
(a)The running at large of domestic animals or domestic fowl is hereby declared to be a nuisance. It is unlawful for an owner to permit any animal or fowl to run at large.

(b)It shall be a defense to prosecution under subsection

     (a) above that the animal was:

(1)A dog in an off-leash site established under section 32-11 of this Code; or

(2)A feral cat that is a part of a trap, neuter, and return program.

So if you live in Houston, and your pet cat Fluffy is not a feral cat that was trapped, neutered, and released, then you are a criminal if you don't keep it on a leash outside.

Lets not forget Dude that keeping wildlife, um... an amphibious rodent, for... um, ya know domestic... within the city... that ain't legal either.

My son wants a cat.  I've read a lot about the benefits of cats for autistic kids and want to make it happen.   I've been allergic to them (cats, not autistic kids) all my life, although some breeds, e.g. Maine Coon, don't seem to bother me.  We actually had a Maine Coon for fifteen years before he passed.  He was awesome, but was a kitten rescue and grew into an unexpected monster.  Anyone have experience with a breed of cat that is good for allergies, but isn't the size of a school bus?  Any thoughts on males v. females, especially if we really want the cat to bond with my son rather than his sister or my wife or me?

Thanks to anyone with any thoughts on the matter.

Longhaired cats tend to be more hypoallergenic than short-haired, as your experience with the Maine coon exemplifies.

I don't think sex matters, but socialization does. If you get a kitten as opposed to a more mature cat they're more likely to bond closely with their humans.

There is a kind of food you can feed cats that neutralize the allergens that are produced. Or something like that

That’s awesome. I hope y’all can make it happen. A good vet can very likely point you in the right direction for breeds/things to do etc as others have mentioned. Best of luck and I can see how they can benefit. 🤘🏻

Another thing, they have recently discovered or shown or however they do it that cats have much better long-term memories than previously believed, especially when it comes to self-preservation issues.

I think most cat people have observed that someone who doesn't know how to approach or handle a cat often gets the cold shoulder in comparison with those who do.  So, during the cat's socialization, it's probably important to keep your young? son from mishandling him or her and involve him in feeding and care.  Not sure I'd go so far as to say that cats will only love you if you are the one that feeds them, but they do make that positive association.

The first cat pictured was a fully grown feral cat that showed up in my backyard.  It took a full month before he would let me pet him.  It was another month before he would come in the house.  I named him Skittles (mash up of skittish and skedaddle).  He never required a litter box as he would go to the door anytime that he needed poop or pee.  I would let him outside while I was at work and whenever he wanted to roam.  As there are other feral cats in the area he was constantly getting into major fights.  He was a very affectionate cat and would sleep at the foot of the bed each night.  After about 2-1/2 years he decided that he preferred to be outside all of the time and would just roam the area only coming back to eat. Being that he had a tag other eople in the area new that he was "my" cat.  Come to find out some of the other neighbors were putting food outside as well for Skittles and other cats and racoons in the area.  Eventually he quit coming back at all.  I found that quite difficult at the time because he originally showed up soon after my divorce was final.  He basically kept me company.  He eventually got into a bad cat fight and the other neighbors took him to the vet to get him patched up as he was well known by many and was looked after.  The vet determined that he had feline aids as well.  The neighbors called me to let me know and we elected to put him down so that he would not infect others.  It was a sad day.

image.thumb.jpeg.e76113ce41272e6378aff210eba6be9e.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.f85a790858b999489b23377a9d67353e.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.8b64c76d6791fe18dfdf4c934f4eff9d.jpeg

The second cat shown is my current cat.  He was a stray kitten that showed up in my backyard shortly after Skittles quit showing up.  He immediately came up to me and was not afraid at all.  I have had him about 3 years now and his name is Scratch.  He is also an inside/outside cat but is never outside while I am away.   He requires a litter box.  He will be outside and will come to the door to be let in to only go use the litter box and then want outside all over again.  He is a straight up hunter and is always bringing me gifts (snakes, lizards, mice, etc.).  Scratch is a very affectionate cat and is always wanting to be petted or held.  He keeps all of his toys in either his food bowl or water bowl.  It is funny watching him carry things around in his mouth like a dog does.

I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum.  If you love cats, that's great.  I just find it fascinating that there is a 6-yr-old thread (dating back to the great migration from the Shag) about the awesomeness of dogs with 187 pages, and there is a 3-yr-old thread about the awesomeness of cats that has - checks notes- two whole pages.

Thanks!  He's a 7th grader, so he's plenty old enough to handle everything, and he is good with animals.  We have a dog that was initially intended to be a de facto service animal for him, but the dog latched on to his sister, and it completely backfired.  Dog sleeps with her every night.  The plan with a cat is that it will be 100% his responsibility (I know), with food and water in his bedroom along with anything else for the cat, like a scratch post/tower or whatever.  We'll probably cut him a bit of slack and not put the litter box in his bedroom, but then again . . . :)

Look... we all know that this thread is and will always remain undefeated.  I was just making a general observation about the contrast between the dog and cat factions on the board.  My interpretation is this... Dog people (of which I am one) are more in-your-face and attention seeking, and cat folks are cool to just hang around in their own space while not bothering anyone and not being bothered.
