2021 NBA Offseason Thread: Business as Usual? -- Trades/Free Agency/Retirements/Etc.

The nets already have harden and KD to stop the ball. They don’t need kyrie to do the same and Simmons won’t shoot if he’s wide open. A pass first point guard that defends 3-4 positions might be better for them than a scoring point that is only going to play 41 games at most this year and miss just under half the playoffs (the entire finals if against a CA team not named the kings).

If kyrie end up in Philly he only misses 6 games during the season against the conference and then a few games out west. I’m not saying Simmons and kyrie are equal players from a basketball standpoint but the trade off from a talent, need, and availability standpoint makes more sense to me than getting a CJ or maybe even the rumored brogden/lavert trade option.

I would think the nets would jump at something like this and maybe the sixers would be reluctant because of not having an all star player against  conference foes for every playoff game. But if they can find a good backup it might be worth it as the sixers could win enough to possibly have home court against the nets should they meet in the playoffs. Then it’s about taking care of business at home.

How would the logistics of Kyrie playing even work? He just shows up in Milwaukee for a Tuesday night game? Then shows up in San Antonio on Friday night?

cmon man. That shit ain’t happening. He won’t play a game this year.

Kyrie “hey boys, how you been doing?”

Harden “the Bucks are always tough at home”

KD “we need this, we just lost 2 in a row at home to the Raps and Wiz”

Kyrie “ah, I didn’t see. I was busy doing some research and flat earthing. Let’s hoop!”

I honestly can't believe we haven't seen something of a rumor between Kyrie and Simmons being swapped.  That makes both teams better an theoretically could be done with very little draft pick compensation though the sixers might want a pick or two because of Kyrie only having 2 years on his contract while simmons has 4 and Kyrie would miss approximately 6 divisional games depending on how rules shake out.

I know I'm an idiot but can someone tell me why this isn't talked about at all? The nets would never face Kyrie in the regular season at home nor in the playoffs.  I just think it's a home run if the nets are worried about his status at all.

Because Simmons sucks dick and Kyrie is a top 20 player in the league.

Does that answer your question?

Simmons doesn’t suck. He is an elite defender (top 5 in league), has great vision and doesn’t really turn the ball over. On a team with Harden and KD he would be perfect with driving to the free throw line then finding Harris, KD or Harden for an open 3.

But - you know what - my initial quip wasn't fair to you. Let me flesh it out.

Simmons is a locker room cancer and on top of that a distraction. A perennial top 10 player in the league has been hinted at voicing plenty of times his distaste for playing with the man.

He doesn't work on his game. He can't make a free throw. He doesn't threaten the defense from more than negative feet out considering his established habit of passing up open dunks in the playoffs.

He doesn't seem to particularly give a fuck about winning or losing. Nor does he seem to give a fuck about making his teammates better or establishing any sort of intensity in do or die games.

So yeah - Kyrie is head and shoulders above him as a player even if he only plays half the season.

They're both headcases but one of them is an established champion and offensive assassin and I'm not sure the other even enjoys attempting to compete in the playoffs.

So no - the Nets aren't trading Kyrie for Simmons.

I agree they aren’t trading for him. I wouldn’t want either on my team.

That said - this entire thing has me disillusioned with the NBA. Once LeBron and Durant retire I think I'm going to be hard pressed to give a fuck.

Really? I think the NBA, especially the western conference, becomes more enticing once lebron retires

Because LeBron has been dominating the West in his time with the Lakers with his zero playoff series wins outside of the bubble?

SAS has actually been pushing this for quite some time.    He's just an asshat so most people are ignoring it

Sorry if it’s already been covered, but can Kyrie Ask for a religious exception? I believe he’s a “practicing” Muslim.

He identifies as Native American so maybe there is a tribal exemption out there for him with the ability to sell tax-free cigarettes and run a casino. He could make some good historical arguments for not trusting the government.

Yep. I will say there are plenty of jack wagons who don't really care about winning in the NBA but not many on a MAX long term deal.

Lack of passion, being one of the worst free throw shooters in the NBA, and on a MAX long term deal is an ugly combo. He would be perfect in an Orlando or insert other bad basketball city but Ben says he wants to go to California. Fuck that guy.

They all want to play in California. Apparently they need ten more teams. NBA should get on that.

Sixers are just as good without him. They should let him sit and save the money. One team will have to have the balls at some point.  Allowing forced trades with 3-4 years remaining on the contract makes the contract worthless. If you are an owner you should push for NFL rules. Every contract is essentially for one year.

So when do the Nets tell Kyrie he will not suit up for them at all this year? There is no way he should be allowed around the team or organization as a whole.

Today.

Shocked that the nets are taking a hard line with Kyrie. I agree with the stance just didn't think they'd do it.

Agreed.   I like it.

Good for the Nets. Wasn't interested in watching that clownshow potentially ruining yet another KD season.

Of course - his absence isn't optimal but at least they can focus on playing without him.

Welp, let's see if his reddit-guided convictions are worth $35,328,700.

He won't lose his entire salary.   They will pay him for the games that he would be eligible to play.

I don’t think he’s doing anything no matter if they’re in NY/NJ, SF or Oklahoma City

Right, but in OKC, it's technically the team choosing not to let him play, so they'd still have to pay him that game check.

Good for kyrie for putting his money where his mouth is, regardless if anyone agrees. And damn good for the nets for doing the same with their franchise values. Kyrie is going to come out better than the nets it would seem though. He can sit out. Then opt out next year if he can find another big contract with a team willing to deal with his issues.

Ive also read this is the exact reason the nets got harden. They wanted a super team regardless of kyries antics. Good planning on their part.

With Simmons just randomly showing up in philly without anyone knowing is there any question this is the best off-season in sports?

Just another genius take from you.... we should celebrate an ignorant man doubling down his ignorance and further propagate misinformation about something that would save lives.  Good for him, indeed, for proving without a doubt that he is the biggest fucking idiot in the NBA. I was a bit on the fence when he said that the earth was flat, but he's leaving no doubt now. You want to celebrate this dumbfuck? For what? Having conviction in his beliefs? There are a lot of people who have conviction in their beliefs, that doesn't make them any less ignorant or dangerous.

Having conviction in his beliefs is a lot more admirable than going against his beliefs for money. Not everyone can be bought. It is also comical that there are 60million or more people in this country that aren’t vaccinated and you choose to spout off about this single person. Let him retire. At least he can do it knowing his own conscious is clear and maybe he’ll be able to sleep easy at night. There are a ton of people (vaccinated or not) in this country that can’t do the same because they are a whore for the dollar bill.

I never said good for society. I said good for kyrie. It’s ok to be wrong and it’s ok to disagree with someone’s beliefs. Kyrie is going to sleep in the bed he made for himself and that is respectable. Far more respectable than trying to divert criticism or wiggle out of his beliefs once the hammer is dropped on him.

Until Kyrie comes out and says it's his belief, I don't think it is.  Feels like damage control from his team.

You can have this belief and still have gotten the vaccine 7-8-9-10 months ago when anyone rich and famous was able to get it and before the mandates and stuff.

Posted (edited)

He said he doesn’t believe people should be losing their jobs over the mandates so he is standing in solidarity with them. So I guess that kind of is stating his belief? He said he isn’t anti-vax.

Stupid take is stupid. Kyrie didn’t retire, he put the team and his teammates in a shit position. I would have way more respect for him if he actually put his beliefs first and walked away from the game like someone with real convictions. Instead, the Nets still probably have to pay him for about half the games while he sits or let him play and have a fucking circus around him playing every other night and the disruption that causes within the team with him in and out of the lineup. This is a bitch move by the ultimate bitch of the NBA. Just nut up and retire.

Standing in solidarity by still being on the payroll while not having to do anything for his paycheck? Between his payroll and the luxury tax around it, the Nets are getting bent over for someone standing with the collection of idiots in this country. It shouldn’t be allowed and they shouldn’t have to pay him 1 dollar if he makes a decision that costs him the ability to play. Really take a stand instead of some phony B.S.
