How big was the rivalry with them back in the day? I was born in the 90s and don't remember the SWC days. How did they get their nickname "Coogar High"? How did they choose the name Shasta for their cougar? Would they ever make it into the Big 12?

Sorry for all the questions. Just wanting to know a few things about them since I don't know much.

They regularly kicked the shit out of us in the 80s, but we beat them in 1990 in Austin that's usually referenced in the shag/surly "big game" threads.

This was part of our "Shock the Nation" season.  Subsequently, Miami kicked the shit out of us in the Cotton Bowl, usually referenced in the shag/surly "seppuku" threads

I was there briefly during the Case Keenum era. 2010 he tore his ACL and our backup broke his collarbone in the same game. Had to go with a true freshman and ended 5-7 that season. 2011 was amazing! Case set all those records. UH could have played in and possibly won the sugar bowl if it they hadn’t completely shit the bed in the C-USA championship game.

P.S.  that was one of the worst football games I’d ever gone to.

Case redeemed himself and won the TicketCity Bowl, finishing a 13-1 season.

UH punched our shit in for a little while when we sucked.  I believe Cougar High got started when UH had to move some classes to area high schools during
campus renovations. We don't play them because they build their bleachers with duct tape. I think that about covers it?

When I was a kid in the 80s, they played their home games at the Astrodome. Their Jack Pardee years and that sleazy looking dude that followed him were pretty fun with Andre Ware and Klingler. (Little did I know back then that Ware would become an insufferable SEC/aggy honk.) Actually I liked that short squatty RB they had, Chuck Witherspoon. Unfortuantely they used to kick Texas' ass until the '90 game.

The Phi Slamma Jamma era was awesome - I was about 7-8 during those years and those guys were the Fab 5 before the Fab 5.

Anyway, they were the last school to enter the SWC. As a kid growing up in Houston, it was cool to have them as conference mates with Texas and the others, although I went to way more Rice games than UH games.

8 million people within 100 miles of campus, but can't get 40K to a football game.  More UT, Tech, and aggie T-shirts on campus than UofH shirts. Can't average 3.5K to watch a top 25 basketball team.  No fans = no value to a P5 conference

It's a school you attend when you go off to college and then screw up your grades or knock up some chick / get knocked up.  And then you have to come back home to ma and pa and commute and finish your degree as best  you can while working as an assistant manager at the local Applebee's.

They ain't go no fans

I went to one of their basketball games this year and it was damn near sold out.

Their official website says the best home crowd was 5,708.  They played all of their home games in Texas Southern's home arena as the old Hofheinz is getting a major, major renovation. Texas Southern's place holds 8,100.  I have no idea if they counted correctly, considering it isn't their regular home court.  But I would assume that they want as high of a count as they can get for appearance.  Only four of fifteen crowds were listed over 4,000 and they were against Wichita State, Cincinnati, Arkansas, and Connecticut

But my point is that their athletic programs, despite having a huge local population, cannot generate enough interest to average even 5,000 fans to basketball games, even when they are really good, and even as counted by their own athletic program.

And Kelvin Samson on top of it all

As a kid growing up in Houston I loved Jack Pardee and the run and shoot offense.

I always thought the name “cougar high” came from the fact that it is a commuter school and frankly didn’t have high educational standards. So we always called it that as an insult for it simply being an extension of your high school experience.

"Hey Hey Jack!" His offense was fun to watch.

Jack Pardee is the only Aggy I have respect for. Unfortunately for him, all that time spent as a Junction Boy might have led him to develop melanoma and then other metastastic cancers later in his life.

I didn't know that UH had to house some of their classes in area high schools. I too thought it got the title because it was a commuter school.

I have no ties to UH but I pull for them since they rep H-town. I believe the Cougar High cutdown was referring to the fact they started as a junior college created by HISD. Commuter school that was looked down upon by the other SWC schools. The school has really improved over the years and is shedding its commuter school rep as they have built lots of on campus beds. UH basketball was great and Phi Slama Jama was awesome. Should have won at least one Final Four. Hall of Fame coach Guy Lewis helped bring about integration of college athletics in the South by recruiting black players. They should be in a Power 5 conference. Would love to see Major kick ass and coach there for a long time.

They apparently don't mind selling their souls for wins, as seen by Major's hire of baby Briles.

What the fuck was Major smoking?! I’m no longer a fan after I found out he hired Rape Enabler Jr.

The problem with UH is that every game is mainly the students attending since home games for every sport are free. All students have to do is present their student ID and the athletics department swipes them through.  Don’t get me wrong, when I was a student there briefly, I enjoyed not having to pay for the games. However, if UH ever wants to get in the Big 12 or any P5 conference they’re going to have to start to find a way to put asses in seats.

About them not having fans is somewhat true since there aren’t very many ticket holders. Also, most of their “fanbase,” especially in the student section, isn’t loyal. Like I said earlier, 2010 UH went 5-7 and a lot of people I had classes with would say “I’m not going to the game. We suck.” But then the next season when UH started winning they started showing up to games. UH sadly is known for having bandwagon fans and a bandwagon student section. They only show up when UH is winning.

UH started SWC play in 1976, and the conference broke up in 1996, and during those 20 years they won 7 times, so no they weren't a true rival.  But they did win the SWC in their first year. Their best success was using the run and shoot, which was new, novel, and people didn't know how to defend it.

Also about that time, the had a big cheating scandal.  They hired a law firm to investigate what was really going on prove they were honest. They fired that firm announcing nothing had been found.  A few weeks later, the NCAA put them on probation.  They blamed Texas for turning them in (as opposed to admitting they cheated).

After the SWC broke up, their program had terrible facilities and support.  They wanted to bring Football back to campus and want to play Texas in their old tinker toy stadium.  Dodd$ wanted to play it at Reliant Stadium, but they insisted and built some bleachers to add capacity.  Couple days before the game, and inspector condemned those bleachers .  They refused to refund those tickets, rather allowed those ticket holders to watch a closed circuit broadcast.

Now they have hired a rape accessory for their football staff, and want to swing their dicks like they are big boys.  Well....fuck them.

It was much better in the mid-70's to early 80's in both football and basketball(don't recall baseball).  They were a tough out.  And forget it with phi slamma jamma.  How that team didn't win three national championships in a row is beyond my comprehension.

John Jenkins was a bottle blond bastard. But that sonofabitch had some great offenses.

45-24 in 1990 was glorious and one of the best games at DKR during my time on the 40.

I had a few friends go off to UH for college. However, they were all Hotel/Restaurant Management majors so it was good fit.

I would argue that the veer offense in the Yeoman days was a much better offense when compared to the run and poot.  The run and poot worked against bad defensive  schemes  with inferior defenders such as our Horns in that time frame.

Wasn't Bill Yeoman a dirty aggy that was personally handing out cash payments to his players? And the Cougs also blamed UT for turning him into the NCAA when they were put on probation in the late 80s?

What does the athletics package cost UT students these days?  Still have to "draw" tickets?

Moral cogency is not exactly high on Major's list of "things to accomplish today". If this surprises you, you haven't been paying attention.

25% of their student body is white. 28% of it is asian, etc

I believe they are one of the most diverse large-scale universities in north america.

thats arguably the biggest reason they dont have much of an attendence.

its the same problem we have at Texas

What I don't get is that ever since the Keenum years the fanbase has seem to have grown a lot, or at least become more visible.  On gamedays you'll see tons of people around Houston in UH gear and watching at bars and shit.  Yet they have a really nice stadium that's easy to access with super cheap tickets (or free in some cases) and people don't go.  Is it the game day experience down there that sucks?  Or is it just that no one cares about the competition they play against so why bother?

People will go to the games only if it’s going to be on ESPN or ESPN 2 most of the time.
