Nobody Cares

You should thank me for helping you avoid sounding like a blithering idiot on at least one topic the next next time you're in the office blathering on about something for which you clearly don't have the requisite expertise.

You're welcome. And I hope you have a pleasant evening.

Slade Nagle will not join Willie Fritz at Houston after all

Fritz's offensive coordinator has opted not to follow him to the Big 12.

ZACH BARNETT     2 HOURS AGO

Slade Nagle, Willie Fritz's offensive coordinator this season at Tulane, will not join him at Houston after all. Multiple outlets reported Tuesday that Nagle has decided to pursue other options after previously agreeing to do so.

A Lake Charles, La., native, Nagle is close to a Louisiana lifer. He signed with Clemson out of high school but finished his collegiate career at McNeese in 2001.

Nagle entered coaching at Northwestern State in 2002 and coached there again in 2006 as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. He spent 2009 at LSU working with special teams, and 2012-15 at McNeese coaching running backs and special teams.

Nagle was Fritz's tight ends coach for his first seven seasons at Tulane but rose to associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also coached previously at Dodge City Community College, Central Arkansas and Texas State.

Another Tulane assistant not joining Willie Fritz at Houston

Gerald Chatman is returning to Tulane as defensive line coach, per a report.

ZACH BARNETT        27 MINUTES AGO

After it was previously reported that he would join Willie Fritz at Tulane, defensive line coach Gerald Chatman will instead remain at Tulane as part of Jon Sumrall's new staff, according to a report Thursday from 247Sports.

Chatman is the second assistant previously reported to be following Fritz to Houston to ultimately make a proverbial U-turn at the Texas-Louisiana border. Offensive coordinator Slade Nagle did the same earlier this week, though not to return to Tulane.

Chatman helped Tulane D-linemen Darius Hodges and Patrick Jenkins both earn First Team All-AAC honors this fall.

The former Wisconsin-Oshkosh defensive linemen has coached previously at LSU, Colorado, the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee State, and Butler, and as a GA at Texas A&M and Ball State.

New Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall pledged to bring a national championship to New Orleans.

"I'm telling you right now, I'm speaking it into existence, we are going to make the College Football Playoffs, and we are going to win it," Sumrall said.

Hmmm...

Houston reportedly expected to hire former SEC play caller as new offensive coordinator

DOUG SAMUELS    19 HOURS AGO

After Tulane offensive coordinator Slade Nagel decided to explore his options instead of joining Willie Fritz in Houston, Fritz was left with a big opening for his offensive play caller.

That search has reportedly led him to a veteran play caller who spent last season in the SEC.

Kevin Barbay, who spent last season calling the offense for Zach Arnett at Mississippi State, is expected to join the Houston staff as offensive coordinator, the 247 staff report.

Before attempting to make Air Raid personnel fit his offense in Starkville, Barbay spent time as the offensive coordinator at Appalachian State and Central Michigan.

He'll be asked to do something very similar in Houston, as Holgorsen was also an Air Raid guy. This time around though, he will likely have some additional input on what the offense should look like under Fritz, who has been known for his creativity on offense at nearly every stop.

At App State his offenses led to a big upset over Texas A&M in 2022, and at Central Michigan he mentored the nation's leading rusher in 2021.

I appreciate the fact that Tilman’s 2 hires have been absolute failures. They had a pretty good and growing alumni base when Pezman showed up and tore that down in a Patterson-esque way. Apparently the final nail in the coffin was a scandal with the softball team involving (among other things) a player pulling a gun and putting it to another player’s head.

Slade Nagle is leaving LSU to call plays for Willie Fritz at Houston, sources tell FootballScoop.

Zach Barnett          2 hours ago

LSU special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Slade Nagle will be the next offensive coordinator at Houston, sources tell FootballScoop.

Nagle worked under Willie Fritz for the entirety of his 8-year run at Tulane, beginning as tight ends coach and ending as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Green Wave went 11-3 and reached the American Championship in 2023, a run that earned Fritz the Houston job.

Fritz opted to hire Mississippi State's Kevin Barbay as his offensive coordinator at Houston, an arrangement that lasted 11 games.

Nagle has two other offensive coordinator stints on his resume, having served in the role at Dodge City Community College and Northwestern State from 2004-09.

Fritz is replacing both coordinators following his debut at Houston. Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood took the same role at Texas Tech on Tuesday.
