The last remaining reasons to fly SWA are dropping like flies.

It's pretty much gotten down to "choose SWA if the fare and schedule are better than the other options," which is pretty much the complete list of reasons you have to choose any other airline.

I fly intra-Texas for work with some regularity.  That put me in a "frequent SWA flyer" category.  As 1) the ability to handle more things remotely (appear in court via Zoom) has increased, and 2) SWA's schedule and attractiveness has decreased, my loyalty to their system has gone off the cliff.  I'll still book some flights on SWA (they have a decent schedule to and from El Paso, for example), but not like I used to.

And the charging for bags thing pisses me off.  We usually fly SWA each year to and from California for vacation.  I check a big cooler bag full of frozen brisket, ribs, fajitas and such to serve to family over the week.  I guess I'll still get that checked free because of my SW Visa (which I guess I'll keep), but sheesh.

This is pretty much where I'm at these days.

Another big problem for Southwest is a rapidly aging fleet of 737-700s that can’t be replaced by anything Boeing currently manufactures. The Max 7 is still delayed with no concrete timeline for it being certified. At this point, Southwest hasn’t taken delivery of a new 143 seat aircraft in five years.

Agree. They're also putting in lounges at airports for cardholders. The one inside the Phoenix Airport was really nice! 10 minute wait by text and they assigned us a table for free food and drinks.

Need one in IAH bad. Kinda expect it once the new terminals are done but no announcement yet.

I don’t think I’ve checked a bag since 2006.

I never did either but the last two times we've gone to London, my wife buys so much shit for friends and family (and herself) that I wind up buying a cheap suitcase and putting all the extra shit in there and checking the bag. Or I'll put all the dirty clothes in the new bag and check that one.

We're going back in August and I'll be damned if I'm buying another fucking suitcase. I've got a room full of the fucking things.

Southwest was already more expensive on most routes than their competitors so those checked bags weren’t really free.

This. United’s rates are pretty much even with SWA, and most people have free checked bags via their credit cards.

I don’t see a good path forward for SWA. I hope they stick around flights for “cheap” flights to West Texas.

At least I can still put my 14 year-old boy on a SWA flight alone without paying a $300 fee on top of the ticket.  Pisses me off.

For now

I assume you use a Kari Lake filter?

I've heard good things about Jet Blue.

An airline that flies to a single destination (BOS) from a grand total of three airports in Texas probably isn’t going to have a lot of utility for most posters on this board.

Is that how much most of them charge? I think we paid $50 each way for ours on Alaskan but that was a couple years back.

Checked today.  Delta had the cheapest flight, but they charge $150 each way.  For an 8 year-old who needs a babysitter, sure.  But this kid has flown dozens of times.  Hell, I trust him to fly alone more than I trust my dad to, and he's flown hundreds.

Not much experience with then other than 6 or so times flying in/out of Boston and Philly I think but I never had an issue with Jet Blue

I’ve never had issues with jet blue other than the limited destinations. Newer cleaner planes in my experience

I rarely use southwest unless they have a cheaper direct flight than the othersbut that is rare for them these days. Didn’t realize their fleet was aging that badly. They may be in for a world of hurt in the near future

SWA invested heavily in the 737 Max which we all know has been a cluster fuck.  Boeing is way behind on orders.

Of course SWA would never pivot to alternative like Airbus.

I fly a lot for work but it’s split between so many airlines I don’t have much status on any one carrier. I go to a lot of random places across the country and usually don’t have a ton of options.

However, I almost always went with SWA when going to a conference and needed to check two bags. Guess it doesn’t matter now.

Don’t really care about a free Diet Coke but noticed the last 4 flights I had been on they cancelled drink service for “turbulence”. Pretty sure the PE guys figured out another way to save money.

PE douche bags landed some seats on the SWA board and pushed this through

When they stopped being a budget airline, but kept the bullshit cattle call boarding, I dropped them like a motherfucker.
Why deal with the hassle?

Lots of people prefer being able to pick seats without paying extra for the privilege. Every time I fly non SWA all the doltmuppets stand up and clog everything anyway. And I could GAF less about being in an early boarding group when there are assigned seats just so I can hurry up and be on the plane for 30 min while every dumb rube tries to find 12B so who cares?

It's pretty helpful when you want to fly 150 lbs of scuba gear and other crap to Mexico for free.

Or ski/snowboard gear.  This is all sorts of fucked up.  My incentive to fly SWA just went out the window.

If it's for work, I'm likely checking bags.

I worked for a bit with a guy who was a bag checker. Whenever we traveled together I made sure the rental car was in my name. I told him upfront that I don’t wait for people to claim bags. It took me one time of leaving his ass behind at the airport to turn him into a carry-on guy.

"Let's turn our airline into a facsimile of United/Delta/AA, except without international routes, business class, or a global alliance membership". What a big brain move. Pure genius.

Honestly - and no offense to anyone present - the more time goes by, the more I think that business school must be easy as fuck. Pay us $150k, color in this coloring book for two years, and you too can run Southwest Airlines some day!

I'll Uber.

Actually I do try to help the company save money.  I'll even sneak on an extra carryon for my displays which annoys the crap out of the attendants.
