I have a genuine question...how did we get Bill Maher?  I mean, Bill Burr was a successful stand-up comedian, but I don't recall what Bill Maher did to land in the public eye.

He was a stand up and then got Politically Incorrect in the 90s.

Thanks.

That's interesting, I was pretty big into stand-up in the 80's but don't remember him at all.  Maybe he's just never been my cup of tea.

He was never a good stand up comic, quite frankly, and still isn't.  I forget how he got Politically Incorrect but it was solid and he got cancelled.  He later reappeared on HBO.  He used to be more libertarian but now he's an old white guy who thinks everything is woke.

The self-described idiot/asshole understands nuance way more than the self-professed intellectual.

He was in tv shows and movies too. Kind of a poor man's Jeremy Piven, IIRC.

Yeah he was from an era where audiences couldn't distinguish smarmy from witty

This was so brutal I couldn't even finish the clip.

I can't decide where I stand on Burr.  I feel like I've heard him say some stuff back in the day that I would consider maga-adjacent at least, but now he's on the side of the kids in the protests?  Maybe I just haven't heard him enough.

He's actually very liberal, but he does often defend the generations before him that were just working with what the times gave them. Very practical.

I don't think Burr is political. He is really good about pointing out the absurdity when it comes to controversial topics. He tends to tee off on things people take too seriously like Maher thinking of himself as a legitimate intellectual.

The man has overcome being a fully grown human being from Boston. The fact that he's as based as he is is a god damn miracle.

Here is quintessential Burr

I like Burr, it's a good joke, but I'm pretty sure he'd lose his shit if some right wing nutter tried to cite him on this to support abortion bans, because it's not a logical or serious argument, it's a joke. Which is why my perception of him is positive, I like that he can make serious stuff like this funny and sometimes unexpected.

I saw a post the other day that said that "People grow more conservative as they get older" applied to prior generations when most people advanced in their careers and were able to improve their financial status over time, and that's not happening anymore, so it doesn't really apply. There's going to need to be a massive shift in this country in the next decade or so, this model isn't sustainable.

Politically Incorrect was fantastic when it came on Comedy Central right after The Daily Show (with Craig Kilborn).

But, Maher was a pompous windbag even then.  I don't think he's changed, so much as he's just gotten older, richer, and more in awe of himself.

I swear there was a switch thrown right after the 2020 election. He didn't used to spend 90% of his show talking about how shitty democrats are.

He’s pissed because he’s lost much of his longtime base audience and revels in giving us the finger every chance he gets.

Never watched Politically Incorrect because, frankly, I just didn't like the guy.

I used to see him out from time to time in LA and he just came off like a prick.  I always felt bad for the hookers he had with him... I hope they charged him extra...plus, let's be honest, he's in the Hall of Fame of punchable faces.

Saw him outside of marmont one night and I was shocked how tiny he was.  Just a wittle cunty guy.

I saw it live when the GOP convention was in San Diego in '96.  It was super funny.  Chris Rock was on it.

And holy shit...I flew into SAN the day before the convention started...returning from a business trip.  There was a shitload of whores in the airport, flying into town to service the pious, moral GOP.

I saw a live show of PI in probably 1998. Steven Wright was on the show. After it was over we were in the parking lot and Steven walked up and got in the car parked next to ours. Some very beat up piece of shit, that looked like he might have been living in. It was very odd.

This is my not shocked face. He always looked homeless.  Loved his standup though.

Watched a few minutes last night. Turned it off when Maher told Kaitlan "Both Sides" Collins that Kamala Harris not speaking to the press enough is worse than Trump calling them "the enemy of the people".

Oh and he also hit Collins for CNN not being more republican friendly. This dude has lost his mind.

That’s to keep the Texags posters tuning in hoping that he will say something negative about liberals

I was flipping channels late last night and ran across the last 15-20 mins with Carville and Dan Crenshaw. I thought Crenshaw was slightly less psycho than the MAGAts but he was a complete shithead on Maher this week.

That's called fear. Trying to pivot from "he's so old" to "we're the moderate party" but then burying your head in your hands every time Trump goes on TV.

I think Crenshaw initially presented himself as a moderate "let's just all get along" republican who could appeal to everyone. That lasted about five minutes and now he's basically J.D. Vance.

Politicians are under no obligation to talk to the press at all.

I watched a few minutes last night because it was the last show before the election. I changed the channel right after Maher said that Biden's garbage comment was 10 times worse than Hillary's deplorables remark. He then went on to ponder why the language in politics (from both sides!) is so divisive these days.

Former republican Tim Miller looked at him a few times like WTF are you doing?

Biden was misquoted and came out immediately and clarified and apologized. And somehow that is really bad to Maher? What does he want? Sack cloth and ashes?

There are lots of times I cannot stand him, but for some reason I still watch. I thought Meygan Kelly ate his lunch the week before. He acts arrogant most of the time.

Not to mention that Trump (you know, the guy actually running for President) has spent the last decade coming up with new derogatory terms for all of his enemies. Biden momentarily misspeaks and then corrects himself (I honestly don't know what he was trying to say, which of course has been a recurring problem and why he's not running) and Maher turns his show into "omg the language coming from both sides is so terrible!".

Feigning outrage to fill airtime. Nobody actually cares.

He didn’t even misspeak. “The only garbage I see is Trump’s supporter’s (garbage).”

Every time this thread pops up, about once every couple of months, my immediate internal monologue is, "That fuckstick still has a show?  Why?"

Tim Miller was worth the watch. He befuddled Maher by flat out rejecting his stupid false equivalency.  Maher is just not funny anymore. His New Rules last night was the best thing he’s done in a while.
Israel broke him somehow. He can’t accept that just because they were attacked and fully have the right to defend themselves, some people just don’t believe that they should slaughter the whole civilian population of Gaza to do it.

I understand he’s dragging Democrats and their woke agenda in the aftermath of the election. What does Maher want, other than to recover his lost audience?

Hookers and blow, I’d guess. Just a guess. He has no value, or principle, that abides.

The Israel issue has always been a blind spot for him. He has always been a complete dumbass about it. What really broke him was the pandemic, and all this “woke left” stuff is really just a side effect of that.

One of the guests he’s had over recent years is Bari Weiss and he just fawns over her. Bari Weiss is a stupid person’s idea of what a smart person is, and she’s an illiterate person’s idea of what a journalist is. On some other show, she couldn’t help herself in explaining that the reason the democrats lost big in the election was because all they could talk about was all this fringe social issue crap, especially the transgender issue.

Harris never even mentioned those issues on the campaign trail. Yeah there was a media blitz by the far right intimating that, especially when it came to those disgraceful ads that Cruz was running about Allred and that one clip where Harris did make comments about it five fucking years ago, but that’s exactly who was talking about that shit: Republicans.

Bari Weiss and her chickenshit ilk fell for it hook, line and sinker. So did those who still watch and take Bill Maher and people like him seriously. They couldn’t wait to clap really hard drooling over how smart they think these clowns are. They’re as clueless as Peggy Noonan was when she penned that ridiculous op-ed that said under the headline “America, after its long journey through the 2010s and ’20s, is becoming more conservative again.” It’s just more of the same self-serving bullshit from the elite “intellectual” class that comes up with these on-the-fly comments that they think are just loaded with intelligence…when all it really does is tell the story of how truly fucking stupid they are.
