Meanwhile in Wise County

Drove past this last night and there were at least 2 dozen cop cars there. I thought it was an overzealous traffic control for the NASCAR race at TMS. Turns out, Boy was I wrong.

A Rhome police officer was shot while trying to apprehend a home invasion robbery suspect Sunday near New Fairview, prompting a massive manhunt for the shooter who remains at large early Monday morning.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office identified Royce Wood as the shooting suspect. Wood is approximately 6-feet tall and 200 pounds. Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said Wood is from the Azle area.

Wood, a suspect in a Saturday home invasion robbery, was spotted riding a motorcycle around a neighborhood near Farm Road 407 in New Fairview Sunday evening, and police were tipped off to his location, Akin said. A Rhome PD unit was the first to locate Wood, who was traveling on a motorcycle with a female passenger at around 8 p.m.

After the officers attempted to pull the motorcycle over, Akin said Wood stopped, then fled on foot and fired several rounds at the Rhome police officers.

“He turned and fired some rounds and hit one of the Rhome officers in the lower leg,” Akin said. “…A Rhome officer returned fire, but there’s no indication that he was struck.”

Wood’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Akin said the officer was shot in the lower leg. He expects the officer to be OK. A Rhome officer fastened a tourniquet on the gunshot wound as the suspect fled on foot. The officer was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

“We think the officer is going to be just fine,” Akin said. “…He’s in good spirits and alert.”

As of 1 a.m. Monday, the multi-departmental search continues, with K-9 units, multiple helicopters and a massive police presence forming a perimeter that illuminated roadways in south Wise County between U.S. 81/287 and FM 407 with flashing blue and red lights.

Akin said Wood is still believed to be armed, and cautioned nearby residents to make sure their doors are locked until the suspect is apprehended.

A police perimeter was set up in the area of FM 407 and FM 2264. Akin said the perimeter has been expanded as the search continues. Police have used technology, such as heat sensors, and attempted to track Wood’s cell phone during the search.

“It’s difficult when you commence a manhunt in the darkness,” Akin said. “Luckily, the areas we’re searching, there aren’t a lot of hazards. We’re trying to, hopefully, keep him contained so we can pick him up.”

“We’re just trying to find this guy before the night is over,” Akin said.

(Narrator: They didn't. He's still at large.)

Update: He's still loose.

The search for the man suspected of shooting a Rhome police officer Sunday night in New Fairview entered a new phase Monday.

Sunday night, dozens of police vehicles formed a massive perimeter around Farm Road 407, Farm Road 2264 and U.S. Highway 81/287. By 8 a.m. Monday, the search effort transitioned into a more broad fugitive investigation, Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said.

“We have changed tactics. We had a perimeter, probably within a five-mile radius, throughout the night, and wrapped up the close proximity manhunt around 8 a.m.,” Akin said. “Right now, we’re looking at phase two, a full blown fugitive operation to try to locate and arrest the fugitive. We have expanded our area. It’s turned into an investigation.”

Texas Department of Public Safety Rangers and the Wise County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation into the shooting, Rhome Police Chief Eric Debus said Monday afternoon in a press release.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) posted a $5,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of Royce Edwards Wood, 43, Monday afternoon. Wood is considered armed and dangerous, Akin said.

This is not Wood’s first time fleeing police on foot, according to a 2013 report from KCBD 11, a TV news station in Lubbock.

In 2013, Wood, then 35, was arrested for burglary of a habitation and evading arrest, KCBD reported. Police said in the 2013 report that Wood forced entry into a home, ransacked the residence, assaulted a disabled female and fled the area on foot before he was found on the roof of a residence and taken into custody.

When asked if Wood’s reported history would make him more difficult to locate, Akin disagreed.

“It makes it easier for us,” Akin said. “We do know he has the potential to be a dangerous man. That concerns us. We want to make sure the citizenry in general take caution, don’t approach the guy, call 9-1-1. He is experienced in the criminal misbehavior world. He also has a significant criminal history that I can’t divulge right now.”

Sounds like the shithead in Austin that killed those folks in Northwest Hills and then walked his ass home 20 miles away overnight.  But don't worry.  They had a perimeter!

tell me more about this. did he walk 20 miles there and back? was that a targeted hit? if yes to all that, then i admire that man's conviction.

Not worthy of your admiration, he crashed his car to trap his ex-wife and family in the driveway and opened fire.  Then fled, and was found in Manor the next day.  I believe the suspicion was he walked home overnight.

And he is accused of sexually assaulting the step-daughter he killed IIRC.  As well as being a former sheriff's deputy.  He's just an all around great guy.

Lawyer in Decatur who has a daily blog is keeping up with it.

Glad there's another Liberally Lean reader here. Barry is the former DA back when there was a shred of common sense in the 90's. His blog has more readers than the local paper and he's a genuinely good guy. Grew up with him in Bridgeport. (I know where the bodies are buried)

Police arrested one suspect just south of Decatur Monday night while another remains at large following a vehicle pursuit initiated by the Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD). The pursuit was tied to report of an aggravated robbery in Fort Worth and ended on U.S. 81/287 near NRS (National Roper's Supply).

The driver of the suspect vehicle, Erian Mitchell, 18, was arrested on scene, said FWPD Public Information Officer Brad Perez.  The other suspect involved in the chase was able to get away from police, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5-foot-7 with a neck tattoo, wearing a blue shirt and shorts.

The chase started after the Fort Worth PD East units responded to a shooting call at 5701 Shelton St. in Fort Worth around 7:30 p.m. Monday.

“This appears to be the result of an aggravated robbery that occurred in the parking lot at this location,” Perez said.

Officers met with the victim who was located at an area hospital with a non-life threatening injury to the hand, according to FWPD. Perez said the actors were later spotted in a vehicle pursuit that ended in Wise County.

The vehicle was disabled by spike strips, ending the pursuit at U.S. 81/287 and County Road 4227 more than two hours after the initial call. Police helicopters searched the area for the man who fled. It’s the second time in 24 hours that a suspect has fled from officers in Wise County, leading to lengthy manhunts.

Man arrested in suspected double homicide

A man was arrested Tuesday and charged with the murders of his wife and daughter, according to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert A. Morairity, 45, has been charged with capital murder, murder and tampering with a corpse, according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin.

The investigation began Monday morning when the sheriff’s office received a call from the brother-in-law of Kimberly Kellam, 42, saying she and her 11-year-old daughter had not been seen for several months, according to a news release from the WCSO. The caller said his sister-in-law was living off County Road 4371 south of Decatur with her husband, who he identified as Morairity.

Deputies went to the location and found the residence abandoned after knocking at the door with no response and walking the property without locating anyone.

Morairity was located in Dallas around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the news release states. A WCSO investigator, Texas Rangers and Dallas Police Department officers met with Morairity, who had two children — ages 10 and 3 — with him.

“Morairity, at first, claimed he had not seen his wife or oldest daughter in six months.  Eventually, he admitted his wife and 11-year-old daughter were deceased, and their remains were inside the garage at the CR 4371 address,” the news release states.

The two children were released to Child Protective Services (CPS), and Morairity voluntarily returned to Wise County with a WCSO investigator and a Texas Ranger.

“After arriving on the crime scene, Morairity pointed out the locations of the bodies,” the news release states.

Akin said the remains of the two bodies have been sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner for autopsies.

The cause of death and motive are still under investigation.

“We do have a statement from him. As a result we recovered two knives at the scene. But we are awaiting the autopsy results,” the sheriff said.

He explained the capital murder charge is due to the daughter’s age.

Morairity’s bond has been set at $800,000 according to online jail records.
