You answered the question yourself. It would be extremely politically fraught and I don't think they're going to want to bring anything other than a complete slam dunk and not just on some lame sounding charge like obstruction of an official proceeding. If they're going to charge Trump, it's going to be with something that sounds serious to a layperson, and as you've noted that'll be harder to prove. Hell, even if they do have a slam dunk, a prosecution would still be a complete fucking mess. I don't think they'll have what they consider a slam dunk on something like seditious conspiracy, so I don't think they're going to charge him with anything.

Well, I do agree about the part about "lame sounding."  But there are variations on obstruction of justice that vary in their lameness.

When the goal of the obstruction is to overturn the results of an election, then it's not very lame.  It's a 20 year felony just like seditious conspiracy.

As pointed out here or on the other thread, we don't have a lot of crimes on the books that address this kind of thing.  Which is amazing, given Congress' propensity for criminal laws.  But these aren't politically expedient crimes like the drug war, or sex offender registries (Adam Walsh!) , or gun enhancements or the Armed Career Criminal Act or the Violence Against Women Act.  And we don't have a lot of precedent for this kind of criminal activity.

I must say, I am pretty impressed with the thoroughness of the Committee.

They haven't started what will no doubt be the grandstanding phase, but their commitment to actual investigation seems laudable.

And, the information that seems will be revealed during the grandstanding phase is going to make it worthwhile, I think.

I agree, HOWEVER, I fear that the people who need to know the "reveal" stopped paying attention long ago.  This may as well have happened a lifetime ago in their minds.

The Wards, both of whom are doctors, also said the records subpoena should be blocked because they use the phone numbers to communicate with patients, and that releasing phone data would compromise protected medical information.

Is that how it works? I send a few texts to my lawyer and then BOOM...I have a privileged Batphone to conduct whatever business I wish and is beyond the reach of law enforcement and civil discovery?

Are they represented by Saul Goodman?

I get your opposition to grandstanding, but I think it'd actually be much better if they grandstanded the entire time. When the GOP takes the House and opens an investigation into Hunter Biden, you can bet your ass they'll never shut the fuck up about it and it will be politically effective. They showed the fucking blueprint with their eight Benghazi investigations. There's no good political reason an actually legitimate investigation into the opposition party planning a coup should be kept so fucking quiet.

Agreed.  Just hope they keep the look at me to a minimum in favor of look at this shit.

The Wards say the committee was not properly constituted and that the subpoena violates their First and Fourth Amendment rights.

Two of the other Arizona electors, Nancy Cottle and Loraine Pellegrino, were subpoenaed as the panel homed in on those chosen to lead the elector delegations. The two, who are also being represented by Kolodin, said in a statement through their attorney they were targeted for “exercising their fundamental rights as Americans".

The not properly constituted argument is standard and is being shot down everywhere it's raised.  And I believe the same is true of the 1st and 4th Amendment arguments.  Definitely true in the Eastman case, and I don't think his is particularly unique.

This is totes fine, totes normal.

Also, that fucker should lose his law license as quickly as the DC Bar's due process will allow.

I hope we kept the gallows the terrorists brought.  Would be fun to watch them hang by their own device, though it probably has the durability of an aggy engineered football stadium in the DFW area.

Lol, they aren't even real doctors, and it shouldn't be hard to redact the list of calls to patients. Even if one made it through, is anyone going to give a shit that Bob Smith booked an hour for a back adjustment? It's not like they are outing people with terminal illnesses. Just more red tape to gum up the works hoping for the orange knight to ride in and pardon everyone in 3 years.

As a general proposition, I don't think these subpoenas are for actual text messages.  Just times and dates.  A sort of "pen register" for a cell phone.

How can any respectable person vote for the republican party anymore? If you want to be a rational conservative, start you're own damn party. The existing one is no longer legitimate.

Osteopaths are a lot closer to real docs than chiros.  Most hold a regular medical license just like an MD.

G.O.P. Declares Jan. 6 Attack ‘Legitimate Political Discourse’

The Republican National Committee voted to censure Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for participating in the inquiry into the deadly riot at the Capitol.

If the Dems can’t politically exploit this self sabotage, they don’t deserve to win:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/04/us/politics/republicans-jan-6-cheney-censure.html

The Republican Party on Friday officially declared the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and events that led to it “legitimate political discourse,” and rebuked two lawmakers in the party who have been most outspoken in condemning the deadly riot and the role of Donald J. Trump in spreading the election lies that fueled it.

The Republican National Committee’s voice vote to censure Representatives Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois at its winter meeting in Salt Lake City culminated more than a year of vacillation, which started with party leaders condemning the Capitol attack and Mr. Trump’s conduct, then shifted to downplaying and denying it.

omg, I'm not sure I have paid attention until now at the actual construction of that gallows. what was this, a hanging for ants? anyone larger than a little person would have been able to touch the ground. also, that cross member does not look to be attached well. I'm sure the first amount of significant weight would have caused it to dismantle. dumb shit traitors

Seriously. "Legitimate political discourse" are just three words which they have absolutely no idea what any of them mean individually, much less in conjunction with each other. That's like Mitch "Blood Green" giving a lecture on particle physics.
