2022 Transfer Thread - It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

I didn’t realize this was such a controversial position. OU has a hard time getting premier DB’s for the same reasons.

Until this year, OU'd had almost a decade of subpar (at best) DB play under two different regimes. The CB coach was a converted LB coach who would randomly insert players into the lineup.

Similarly, UT had about a decade of forgettable WR (seriously, I remember being worried about no UT WR since 2008 - 09) under multiple head coaches.

Now OU's got a defensive coach who's led several outstanding defenses. Assuming some defensive improvement in 2022, OU should start getting looks from top DBs recruits and Valai and Hall better close on them.

Similarly, UT's new coach in 2021 was the OC of a team that had a WR win a Heisman, and then Worthy happened. The Horns should be getting top WR recruits, and they correctly fired their WR coach when he struck out on almost all of them.

422 qualified LB's per PFF.  Ranking/Ratings:

  • #168 - Lorenzo McCaskill, ULL (63.0)
  • #384 - DeMarvion Overshown, UT (44.3)
  • #421 - Luke Brockermeyer, UT (29.7)

Moody didn't have enough snaps to 'qualify' but graded out at 60.0 over 94 snaps which would have had him ranked around 220.

JAGs sound pretty awesome.

lol at thinking PFF knows anything.

Yeah - why the fuck would we want that?

Not that simple. He’s already on Alabama’s count, so it changes nothing for them to keep a specialist around. As much as I’m told to not worry about the numbers, I doubt we’re taking a second LB after Moody and can’t afford for him to just be great on special teams.

Okay, silly me.  You must know something then.  What better barometers for individual player performance do you recommend?

PFF's grading for NFL is pretty uniform and good. Outside of the basics of snap count and targets for WR, there metrics for college are wildly inconsistent and therefore unreliable. Apparently, they know this and are working on it, but it's hard because a lot of it requires significant trained human power.

This might be the sunshine pumper in me talking, but with the number of blowout games Bama has had the last 4 years you would think he would have more than 44 career tackles or whatever if he highly thought of as a defensive player.

You might need to recalibrate your 44 tackles. If he does and has played many plays on special teams, then those defensive tackles come down. Or he just never makes special teams tackles.

If he’s valuable as a special teamer, Saban would want him another year whether he’d think he can contribute much at LB or not.

Where did you come across they are aware and working on it?

A couple examples that cause to question their college stuff: Think Casey graded 80+ vs. Baylor. Umm nope. Will Anderson was barely top 20 as a pass rusher.

But when you think about it, there are way too many teams/games to be very consistent. You’d need a smaller number of graders/reviewers to be consistent. I can’t imagine there is time for that.

I think we have a grader amongst us too on this here website.

I hope we find someone better.

FWIW, the comments on Bama 247 - from subscribers and mods - were almost entirely positive, and voiced the expectation that he would at least content for a starting spot.  Here are a couple of mod responses to the skeptics =

So given

- our situation

- Bama's seeming willingness to at least take him back

- and NIck Saban's ruthlessness w/ jettisioning deadweight

it's hard to see this as a positive.

FYI, they say he could put his name back in after Spring, so that could still happen.

I think that is likely to happen if he gets passed up again.

If true, their ratings really must be dogshit.

Just double checked. I was wrong on Anderson. He did not grade in the Top 50 for pass rushers at Edge. I suppose it could be arguable that he was a benefactor of those around him. He did grade very well overall.

But good news for Christian Jones. He faced 4 Edge rushers who graded out higher than Anderson.

Casey was our highest graded offensive guy vs Baylor at 82.2. He must have been perfect outside of the missed TD to Worthy, the missed 4th down conversion with green pastures in front of him and the last series in which all 4 plays he chose a less successful option than a much easier but productive choice.

I’ve touted Kerstetters pass blocking several times. He does grade very well based on their metrics, whatever those are.

Regarding McCaskill, he's going to take his visits in the Spring.  Told the Vols 247 guy he's taking his Texas visit on April 1st.

Sucks for us. At least for the Spring Game we will see wide open running and passing lanes - It should create a lot of optimism for our offense.

But Brockermeyer won’t be available for the spring game and I was told without him we should be looking like the ‘85 Chicago Bears.

PFF leadership has been on podcasts and indicated they're aware of the variability of their college football player and unit rankings weakness.

Good evaluation systems are a significant blindspot for college athletics. I few years ago, I approached the vox/SBNation people about an idea to address this, but they weren't interested. Certainly the major leagues (NFL, NBA, etc), rival sports teams, and fans would be interested in standardized player evaluations. As Had Enough said, standardized is the key word.

There are/were technology solutions for some of this (think 2nd spectrum for football), but a lot would still be manual. mgoblog's FFF and UFR are examples of how laborious it is to actually do this, but there are economies of scale to be had.

Burton would be a good get. Daniels is better than playing a freshman 🤷‍♂️?

I guess Dart is BYU bound?

I'm skeptical that they're a package deal, given that Bama mods appear to think that they're landing Burton

That is a crazy turn of events on Neyor.
I'd say congratulations, but I'm bummed Neyor decided to leave Laramie. Can't blame him as Wyoming is run first and he was way underutilized. But damn, best receiver we've had in a long time. I'll be interesting to see him in 2023 when the Pokes visit Austin.

The attached image is a post from Dec 30.

OU - Caleb Williams have been done for more than 2 weeks. Everything else is for clicks.

Also shown is the anticipated "outreach" to Gabriel. The rest of the post has my hand wringing about Mario Williams, Mike Woods, and the rest of the WR room. I also project the issues on the DL (where OU's since taken 2 portal guys and lost out on a 3rd) and the portaling out of yound DBs (McCutchin so far).

Predictions that haven't panned out (yet) have been portal outs of OL and more DBs. I anticipate they'll happened in the next couple of weeks or so or post spring practice. Receipts.
