How do you think this evacuation would be going if Donald Trump were in charge?

Be honest.

This might take a while.  MN will need to scour his twitter feed and the OANN website.

I have no idea at this point. we can’t tell Isis from the taliban. Anyone who didn’t get across the taliban ransom security check point before it was too late is essentially fucked.

Troops should’ve been back on the ground once the takeover was not being handled. Really think the taliban wants more american troops back on the ground? We’re the last ones they want ton fight. Can’t believe that has to be spelled out

So...a troop surge.  Got it.

You dumb motherfucker, Trump cut the Afghan government out of the negotiations with the Taliban. That, more than anything else, is what caused this.

They don’t deserve any seat at the negotiating table after how they dropped their weapons and the president fled the country.

No. This war is over. No more troops. We're done.

That happened. That's why we were able to get ~100,000 people out safely.

So your solution is to put more troops in harms way? Shit why don’t we just stay another 20 years

i thought we could all agree on the fact we completely misjudged the speed with which the country collapsed?

We all agree that the admin. listened to those sources who stated that it wouldn't fall quickly. The fall isn't the admins fault  I was surprised that it fell so quickly, but was likewise hearing folks say it wouldn't fall quickly. Lots of this falls on the Trump administration.

I'll wager a large sum that there were those in the intel, and military who said otherwise who weren't being listened to by this admin. I'm sure it's not because it's filled with people who just don't love our military.

And yes, Americans were told to get out, and they didn't, and this may have caught them by surprise, which does potentially bolster the case that most everyone thought the gov't. would hold out longer.

and when those troops were killed in action...who would you blame?

By these metrics, it’ll be 20 years before the GOP, who cheered Trump’s withdrawal plan, would have us leave. For reals this time. 2041. We swear!

You're not really good at understanding the linearity of time, huh?

This.  When you game out all of these suggestions, they amount to "the only way to get out is to go back in."

Nope.  While there are surely multiple bad judgments connected with our withdrawal, two things are a certainty: some bad actors were going to take advantage of our retreat (when we are at our most vulnerable), and 2) any attempt to "solve" that problem by adding to our troop presence voids the very thing we are supposed to be doing -- withdraw.

We are withdrawing from hostile territory.  Even with the BEST of planning, we were going to take military and civilian casualties/losses (not able to get everyone out, etc.).

The test of leadership here will be whether we stay the course, knowing the cost.  10 or more American troops dead today.  Maybe more tomorrow.  Versus a path that leads to dozens more American troops dead.  There is no good path.  Only the best one available.

We had 20 years to help them build a stable gov't... not sure that worked out so well.

How would you do that ?  You're going to have to go out in the city to get those folks, 'cause the Taliban isn't going to let them thru checkpoints, and roadblocks. That means death to more American service men, and civilians.

I’m not that old. I can still remember reading the paper and seeing the updates on US soldiers recently killed in Iraq & Afghanistan. Tiny blurb on the 5th page. Nobody cared. Probably 10-20 got killed today & it’s a gigantic story. It should’ve always been this way.

And there it is.

This is just about politics for you. The only reason you're mad is because Joe Biden is a Democrat.

You are the very symbol for everything is politics.  You dishonesty acknowledging that this admin. has handled this very poorly , and lied to the American public (We've thought thru every problem, and have a contingency plan for everything) while doing it badly is also the very definition of this is just politics to you.

It's hard for the right to accept the fact that the mighty USA lost another forever war.

This will be their new Benghazi and we'll be talking about it until the next Republican gets us involved in an unwinnable quagmire.

Fun!

You asked what the negotiator of the deal did about this. He’s a citizen at this point.

Could this have been handled better? Yes. Is it going as poorly as reported? No.

We're about to airlift 100,000 people out of Afghanistan by August 31. That's quite an accomplishment.

Cmon man what ?  How do you maintain a military presence without putting them in harms way, AND get out all the Afghanis who want to leave ?  'Cause if you have that plan you should get on the bat phone, and call DC post haste.

The answer is nothing. He did nothing while he had the power to do so. Why? Because he didn't want to be blamed for losing the war.

But he'll be blamed anyway. Donald Trump will have a long list of failures attached to his resume as worst president in American history.

You have a child's brain.

How many American troops do you want to put back on the ground in Afghanistan to get ~1,000 NGOs out?

How about you not pull the fucking military out in the first place before abandoning the civilians.  Seems a good place to start.  As for the shit show now, do you honestly think there are not thousands of operators frothing at the mouth to locate and rescue stranded people?  This is beyond stupid to argue the point that we fucked up, but the horse is out of the barn now and fuck it, they are on their own.  The military brought many in, then when they left, forgot about them and gave them no instructions on what to do, but it's their (NGOs) fault that they can't leave?  Brilliant.

The military is still there and will be until August 31.

As I don't twitter or tweet, and have read shit that people posted as bizarre as that, I had no way of knowing whether it was or was not serious.

Isolated at the airport - which is exactly where the stranded NGOs are not.

It's not hard at all. I've been witnessing it since 1972.

You mean the stranded NGOs who have known about August 31 for months? Those stranded NGOs?

The ones that were assured by their admin that everything was fine and the ANA would help facilitate a calm and organized withdrawal.  Yes, those NGOs that were lied to as we know Biden was briefed multiple times that the ANA was all but useless and yet did nothing to help those that thought they were safe as the Taliban bulldozed through the country and the admin did jack shit about it except abandon the one airfield that was already fortified and move to a location that is a fucking fishbowl and surrounded on all side by mountains that we don't control.  Those guys.
