The UK may soon ban boiling lobsters alive in a landmark bill that acknowledges that crustaceans and mollusks, too, are sentient beings

  • The UK may soon ban boiling lobsters alive under a new animal welfare bill.

  • The law, if passed, will consider invertebrates like lobsters and crabs sentient and capable of feeling pain.

  • The animal welfare regulation will also mandate that invertebrates be dispatched humanely.

If you live in the UK, dropping a live lobster straight into the pot may soon mean that you're running afoul of the law.

A landmark piece of animal welfare legislation is making its way through the UK parliamentary system, per a report by the London Evening Standard. Under new amendments to the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, mollusks like lobsters, crab, octopuses, and squid will be recognized as sentient beings that can feel pain.

The bill previously only covered vertebrates. But amendments to it will mandate that chefs and fishmongers alike dispatch mollusks quickly and humanely by stunning them, instead of dipping them straight into boiling water.

In addition, the Evening Standard noted that encasing a live shellfish in shrink-wrap or sending crustaceans via post will likely be banned.

The new regulations to give mollusks more rights are now being considered in the House of Lords.

According to British news site The Independent, the regulations were introduced after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson undertook that his government consider creatures' feelings and welfare when drafting new policies.

However, the idea that lobsters might be put through more suffering than necessary while being cooked is not new. A report released by the Humane Society of the United States acknowledged in 2008 that crustaceans, too, are "sentient animals with the capacity to suffer." The report also noted that the crustaceans do not immediately die from common methods of slaughtering them like a knife through the head because they do not have a centralized nervous system.

British daily newspaper The Times spoke to animal welfare activist Maisie Tomlinson, the director of UK charity Crustacean Compassion, who said that the best way to humanely kill a lobster is by electrically stunning it.

"Crabs, lobster, shrimp, and crayfish should be electrically stunned, rendering (them) unconscious within a second," Tomlinson told The Times. "You then need to make sure its nervous system is destroyed within minutes."

Boiling crustaceans alive is currently illegal in a few countries, including Switzerland and New Zealand.

I don’t know. I remember on the old site when people got all up in arms because they thought the U.S. gov’t was going to ban cheese. Plus there’s that inconvenient word “may” in the headline

But if you think it’s more humane to kill what is essentially a giant cockroach by stabbing a knife through its head instead of throwing it alive into a pot of boiling water, have at it.

On the list of offenses, I’d think how you killed something before you ate it is pretty low on the totem pole.  Now if you fucked it first, that might be offensive.

Also, I refuse to accept rules on boiling anything from a country that boils everything before eating it.

That effort would change the whole flavor profile of crawfish boils in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas.

They'd be adding lawmaker sausage instead of andouille to the boils and the taste wouldn't quite be the same.

Sister got a whole bunch flown in from Maine.  At the time her kids were 5 & 3.  Within 2 minutes of opening the coolers the lobsters all had names.  The look of sheer horror on the oldest’s face when she figured out what was going to happen was great.  “No daddy, not Elsa!  Please daddy, no.”  I got to run to Chick-Fil-A and grab some nuggets and fries because they were not going to touch the lobster.

Only tried lobster once as a child and hated it, broke a record for mad dash to bathroom to spit it out.  Since living in NY, love the stuff, steamed, fried, rolls-hot or cold, ravioli, mac n cheese, I'll eat just about any iteration of Lobster.

Before the latter half of the 19th century, lobster were common prison food.  So criminals been eatin it for a while now.

Yeah, the food of poverty often turns out to be pretty good, then the word gets out, demand increases, and prices skyrocket. When I was in school, Buffalo wings at bw-3 were just 10¢ each on Tuesdays. A dozen wings for $1.20 was a good meal for a poor college student. (The wings and sauce were also really good back then.) I’m sure we could come up with lots of examples of what were traditionally cheaper cuts of meat. Didn’t brisket used to be one of those?

Yep. Catch it on sale for dirt cheap and fill up the freezer.

Just put a bullet into each crawfish before boiling.
With the current price of ammunition, I'll have to calculate a .22 LR per bug × something, something... shit's expensive now, yo.

Does it really matter when you can split its head in half about 2 seconds before throwing it in the water?

If you read the article they're saying that's not good enough, as lobsters don't have central nervous systems so technically they are able to "feel" even after a knife through the brain. They say a lobster would need to be electrocuted first. Which is actually more badass. But I still don't understand the "not dead even after knife through the brain" thing works.

Lobster Boy used to make appearances on all the talk shows. He was one of the most popular disfigured people on TV.  But then we all found out that Lobster Boy wasn't a real freak at all. He was just an actual lobster.  One night all us freaks got together, and we... boiled him alive  Now Lobster Boy is no more.
